3D printed Pitts biplane first hop! Then bad things happened.
Time to fly the tiny Pitts 3D printed RC plane. I should have stopped while I was ahead! This was the first model I ever designed for 3D printing, and I have had it go through numerous iterations. Looks like I may be making a couple more around the wing root to make it a bit more crashworthy. Next time, of course, I'll stop while I'm ahead. Stoked to see it fly though!

Well it's a Pitts aeobatic biplane. Dihedral would help in one orientation..... hurt on the other. Unfortunately good aerobatic planes kinda sit on the edge of stability..............

You need to make the initial structure and then make the opening separately and then join the two together after. Each need to be their own component and put together like an assembly.. 90% of the time in the real world you wont find the engine shroud made in one piece.. But this is an excellent way to by pass a situation where you just need to make it one piece for a model..

I have made my own tires by cutting existing tires and gluing them together to make the size I needed. If you still need tires for your Porsche, let me know the width, OD and ID and I can probably recommend a donor tire to be modified :)

Ive tried to learn Fusion and Onshape. Thwure great programs but thw complexity of doing even basic actions just doesnt stick or feel intuitive. After a basic plasticity walk through of 20 min, I recreated a part originally designed in 3d builder in 1/4 the time. Plasricity just works better in terms of intutive design AND acrually running on your system. It launches fast and runs at locked 160 fps on my pc.

is there a way to export the curves you created in Fusion to Plasticity and then model in Plasticity using those Nurbs curves? I tried doing this and Fusion would not let me export the created curves as STEP files. @@redbaronrc Happy to hear :D Curious to see how you made the mechanism for the flaps and what type of servos you used there. Is it going to feature slats as well? Asking as I've never seen slats on any RC plane except for on some of the really big and expensive models, is there a reason for this beyond the added complexity and weight or does it just not make a whole lot of difference in how the plane handles?

  • @Quimber100

There is a basic rule in real life: The minimum internal radius of a sheet cannot be less than the thickness of that sheet. If the sheet is 3 mm, the external radius will always be at least 3+3=6. In reality, this is limited by the sheet metal forming tools and must be taken into account. In modeling, we can have more tolerance and we can make small external radii as long as the internal radius does not reach less than zero, because that is where we will have problems. There are programs that solve this problem by converting values less than 0 into edges or with a very small radius of, for example, 0.1 mm. In fact, I thought that Plasticity did it by converting conflicting internal radii into 0, that is, edges, but it is true that there can be a conflict with the continuity of the adjacent radii or joints. If you keep in mind not to reach internal radii of 0 mm, everything will be fine.

I had a L shaped surface with a 2mm radius corner, then I offset the surface 3mm and it ignored that it couldn't make a -1mm ( or negative ) inside rad, producing a solid body with an internal sharp corner - doesn't Plasticity or Fusion do that?
