Did you bail on the Zoom F6?
Thanks for sharing. I would have liked real exemples of what you filmed with these.
did you use autofocus or a focus puller? I sometimes have issues using autofocus at 1.4 or 1.8
Nice video, different from the usual but way better than most of the people reviewing gear that clearly havent used the stuff they show
Hi there, Joel: Thanks for the video. BTW, are you using a Tascam DR-10L to record the audio for this video? Your lav mic looks familiar.
Great looking background and lighting! Now, I have to buy the Mini Snoot and the CX100. I might even pick up a few of the straps you recommended. Thank you!
Nice Joel!! how much did you charge for that job?
Joel. I see the Flex Stack Pack system in your garage. Would the larger drawer/container units fit your 600/1200 Aputure Units and control modules? Seems like with a divider between it would do the trick. Would love to make this investment as they look highly functional and mobile.
Fan noise from smallrig 220b pro is loud. I can hear it already here in Video. When you’re standing under the light. You will get problems later in the post with the sound.
Was about to comment about safety chain! Glad you mentioned it should be used. A 4.5” grip head bites the menace arm ear a lot better than a 2.5” btw. I’ve done a 1200d menace arm before, but most menace arms should be a 2 person job. Hope you get an assistant or something on this shoot. For solo work, I use an Avenger junior boom arm on a combo. 20lbs counterweight bolted on and can ratchet strap down to the stand if needed. Might be something to look into having on the van. Comes in clutch a lot. Great vid!
Thanks for the tip on the grip head. I definitely need to pick one up! I’ll check out the Avenger Boom Arm. That sounds awesome!
I'm always on the fence with making a rate card. Sometimes they have more money than your rate. I also share and markup passthrough rentals and contract labor as they may want me to produce the job as well. I just have 3 pricepoints in my head and usually quote the bottom or top range and figure it out after they make a commitment.
Do you have a link to the Matthew's kid?
Sure thing!! This is the kit I’m using. have you a reference fort the big light stand ? thank you❤

@ sorry, I meant the reference of the telescopic arm that carries the lamp? thank you very much ❤️
@@JulienVerly Sure thing!! This is the kit I’m using. I have to do the mockup shoot like that. Both with the aputure 90 lantern and Godox F600Bi with a lantern. Planning it for long time already, but my living room is occupied 99% of the time :D. And if someone has deep eye sockets you need to lit him/her anyway with additional light in the front. This might be challenging with 5 people :D.
Yeah I know what you mean!!! Luckily I filmed the video while my kids were at school. That’s always a challenge. I’ll definitely have to add some fill light for sure!! Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for the video. Booming overhead is one thing that scares me... a lot!!!
Yeah, it's definitely a challenge! I usually like having someone help me with the setup. Thanks for watching!
Round table overhead lighting can be tough! Great solution you have there! Now we need an even bigger dome to hit the market!
Yeah, it definitely gets the job done but a bigger dome would be awesome! Thanks for watching the video bro!!!
It's good practice to practice set ups before the shoot!
Yeah absolutely! I always like to do it for bigger shoots just to think through things a little bit more. Thanks for watching!
Have you ever used some kind of crossbar setup for this? Seems like a safe way to hang multiple lights if needed. I know it works for stage lighting, but it’s a bigger scale.
Yes for sure!! I have done a goal post for bigger shoots and it worked out great. My only hesitation for this project is the size of the room. I would usually like a pre light day to do a goal post setup but that’s not in the budget for this one. Thanks for watching!!!
@ that makes a lot of sense. I really love the look of this. I’m shooting a couple round table podcasts this week so this was helpful. Had no idea it was called a goal post, but I like it.
In one of my earlier vlogs, I boomed a 200x over talent with a lightweight impact boom stand. Now I look at it and can’t believe I did something so dangerous! Awesome insight. Thanks for sharing this.
I hear ya! I lost track of how many stands have fallen over when I was first starting out. Luckily no one was ever hurt lol it’s all part of the learning process.
Good video man you're one of my favorite youtubers for this type of work 👏👏 I think depending on the table size and color at the actual shoot the bounced light from the table could also help give some lift to them and look a bit less dramatic too 👏
Thanks for watching! I definitely agree, that's a good call. A nice little bounce from the table would be perfect!
Man I love UA-cam. This is awesome content and so valuable!
Glad to hear it! I appreciate it!
Great stuff. Only thing I would do different is use a lollipop instead of the C stand gobo
Absolutely!! I have been meaning to pick one up for the longest time. I always forget until I need a menace arm for a shoot. Thanks for watching!
@ thanks for sharing.
I love your stuff! Thank you for sharing the menace arm! I try to stay away from the menace arm when I go solo. It scares me... lol.
Haha I get it! They can be a bit intimidating! I always prefer having someone help me with the setup. Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for showing this. I have to do a podcast next month and I was wondering about using the large lantern for lighting with a menace arm in a small space. This came in clutch.
It's definitely a good way to light things up in a small space! Let me know how the podcast goes! Thanks for watching!!
Well Ive used this method, but now im naked
very very smart! I own the light bank so I may create something similar.
thanks for sharing the set up! what would you say the difference is between the inkee and and ulanzi 20w??
good job! Thanks for your share.
Rome footage looks great!
An amazing project and inspiring shots 🙌🏻 Would have been great to bump into you, I’m in Cambridge! Do you use your own lut for monitoring?
Oh boy, I remember shoots that started out like this and led to me saying "Never again". A whole week across the UK, of course the airline lost my camera gear bag so I was stuck with just a camera, scratch audio and one lens, we were expected to shoot like 14 hours a day and then spend the night in the cheapest hotel that was literally right above a disco playing techno music until 6 a.m., and while we worked our asses off to make it a halfway usable film, the production guys back home sat in their comfy chairs and denied our request to get expenses paid for dinner, because it wasn't in the budget...
Love this, looks like an amazing project. I worked on international missions trips through my 20's, more in the third world countries than Europe. But our benefactor was very wealthy and we traveled with him, documenting. Everything you're talking about reminded me about those years. Smallest kit you can get away with always. My first trip we went to Egypt with shoulder cams in 2008, never again. Too big, too much attention. Lots of years walking through airports with a heavy backpack full of batteries and 2 cameras, hard drives, etc. Trying not to knock people in the head with it getting in the airplane bins. Air India was one of the only ones I ran into that weighed carry ons, that was frustrating. I got tried of people telling me they were so jealous I got to go on all these trips, not realizing how much work it was and how much it wore me out. Or how you kind of miss some of the magic cause you're seeing it all through the camera. (Still awesome though) Always need a bit of local currency because yeah, if you stay in weathlier places and you can't carry your bag and then you've got to pay someone else to do it... Can't bring large bags into places so you have to strip the kit down even more and you're left wondering why I even bothered bringing the DSLR shoulder rig, etc.
Thanks for sharing! Looks like a great experience to be on a project like that.
Thanks for watching! It was a blast!
At the end I see a massive brick on your desk that you are charging stuff on. What is that? 6 port high power usb charger?
4 hours till flight leaves and still home my german ass is furious (we are always like 4-5 Hours before our flight leaves at the airport)
Dude I’m so stoked for you! Congrats on the long standing relationship that led to this opportunity and for taking the time to vlog this. It’s not easy on these run n gun shoots. Cant wait to here more of how this job develops now that you have a better understanding of what is needed. You sound exhausted 😂
Yeah, this was a fun trip but it definitely took a lot out of me. I'll definitely share more details about the shoot in future videos! Thanks for watching bro!!!
Thanks for sharing this, Do you need to obtain a shooting permission to this locations?
Did you use IBIS for all the hand held , if so just standard ? yeah having to change hotels a lot is really a killer physically and also mentally , so much better when you can set up "home " in one room , and start downloading straight away , and all your stuff set up . Tipping money you should get from production , I had to do this all the time as an AC , also in the US. In NY they wouldn't even let me use the trolly ,just to load up the van when we had to leave on time , they were chained up ! and you had to wait from some one to be available ! very aggressive bell guys ! if a coach came in they would go for the bigger pay off, and leave me stranded .
What kind of back pack was that? Pretty slick.
It looks like the Pgytech Onemo 2 35L backpack. I have the 25L and the styling and logo are the same, as well as the included small bag.
Correct!
It's a great bag! This is the one I'm using - amzn.to/3ZMbj48
Very interesting. I bet it was nice experience. How many batteries do you have for FX3 for such shoots? And for the tentacle sync. Have you used the timecode also to sync it in post?
Thanks for watching! I had 6 Sony batteries with me. I only ended up using 2-3 per days. They were listing anywhere from 2-3 hrs each battery. I did not run timecode to the FX3 unfortunately! Next time I need to bring a few more tentacle syncs.
This is really cool man! I would love to know more about the audio kit for the Tentacle sync system.
Yeah I'm really loving the Tentacle system! The batteries last forever! My one regret is not syncing timecode with FX3. Originally, they just wanted to have 2 lav mics. I was planning bringing 4. 1 for backup and 1 for timecode for the FX3. As soon as we got there the producer wanted to mic up 4 people so I had to ditch timecode. The tentacle syncs are really great. The App is so easy to use and that's what makes it the best option for me.
How did you manage wrangling data? I know you mentioned that you brought extra SD cards, however, were you backing up data throughout the trip to a server, or just backing data up each night locally, or something different?
Oh never mind, lol, I made it to that part of the video 😂
Pete! Check this thing out. It made it easy to transfer footage on the go. At night I was able to transfer it to a SSD drive. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1790744-REG/clouzen_cl_tn0015_2tb_tainer_portable_all_in_one_backup.html
I’m glad you made a vlog of the trip! I went to Italy this summer for vacation and I know what you mean about security being really tight at all the sights. Even with extra access through a tour guide I would have had so much anxiety at each location if I had been you bringing in gear. Did you find the ibis in the Fx3 to be enough for handholding during those on the spot talking segments?
Absolutely! Thanks so much for watching bro! I definitely had some anxiety. The IBIS on the FX3 works really well. It does crop the image a little bit but I think it's worth it for the steady footage. I was using my bag as a makeshift "Cinesaddle" and that worked really well for the handheld shots.
@ I think a job like this is where that 12,800 ISO shines. I think it’s great you were able to get away with not setting up any lighting
What a job opportunity man 🫨 Its unfortunate that you didn't get to experience it fully beyond work but still a cool experience nonetheless! Btw do you think they'd allow you to use one of those quick-setup monopods instead of a tripod? Maybe the ones even with the small three feet to support, not sure if that would then be considered a tripod as well 🤔 lol I've wondered for these types of on the move shots if a heavy duty quick-setup monopod and a quick release plate could help with stability and being able to quickly move.
I thought about that as well! Some places you might be able to. Some places with security I don't think they would let you. I have a tiny portable tripod that folds up really small. They wouldn't let me through security with it. Thanks so much for watching!!
@@JoelGabrielsen That's a good point, very true. I think a nice shoulder bag type of thing to rest it on like those cine saddles I think that you showed in previous videos could also help out too in a pinch 🎬👏👏
I just picked up the 20-40 and love it. For me its more useful then a 16-35!
Yeah! The zoom range is awesome! I agree!
The first full minute of this video gave me anxiety…$$$$🫠 Great video, though. I never considered the cons of traveling.
Thanks for watching! This is definitely from the perspective of someone who is more introverted. I enjoy traveling with family on vacation but not so much for work!
Hi Joel, my name is Nathan, and I have a video production company in Fortaleza, in the northeast of Brazil. Congratulations on having the courage to share the behind-the-scenes of a project like this, especially the impostor syndrome part. It's something that all of us who work in the audiovisual industry go through, and it's important to talk about it because it's a reality. Good job and keep moving forward!
Hey Joel! What kind of clear zipper pouches are you using in the cases? Great video btw! Thanks!
How did you get started with getting clients. Any advice for anyone starting out?
What are Astras?
