    Awesome presentation and setup. There's lots of valuable info we can get from this video. Someone should develop some compact shades that fit to the tripods and provide a little roof cover for the cameras and lights to keep them cool. Thank you for sharing.

    This was awesome! Would love to see like a more budget oriented (battery powered lights, one camera, not any negative fills or anything yet) style for a similar setup. I’ve been upgrading my gear, but am not at this level, yet! Awesome behind the scenes though man!!

    The footage looks great! The only thing I could think to add to this set up would be some black fabric/duvatine to the ground underneath the talent just to prevent green light bouncing up into the skin tones. Not a huge issue in your shot but that’s what I’d do differently :) awesome vid and i learned a lot otherwise! Thanks!

    Thanks for the video! Nice clean set up and your sample footage proves it. The only difference I would have made would be to have a good lighting tech (Grip) on set to make sure everything stays safe throughout the day. I've seen stuff go over when that unexpected wind gust comes outta nowhere.

  • @djrt8179

    The only thing I would change about this setup is the height and angle of the kicker. Because it looks to be about even in height with the guy's head in the sample footage, you get the little cut of light on his neck from the collar shadow. It's small but a noticeable detail. If you raise the kicker a few feet and angle it down it'll look more like the sun on his back and less of an unnatural source.

    Great tip with the c-stand! I was thinking that maybe if you wanted any further negative fill that you could perhaps have used the solid like a floppy at 90° to give more shadow from overhead on camera side. You would likely have to then clamp down the floppy to avoid it coming into your shot with wind, but this is just overthinking how to do anything at all slightly different. I think the setup and result was very nice, especially for one person crew. Well done and thank you for sharing!

    I really dig big setups like this, but I would have never expected the final frame to look as good as it ended up! Awesome shot, the only thing I'd adjust is the height of the 600d, it creates a somewhat unflattering shadow on the subject's neck because of the high collar. Regarding tips, I agree with Robert about the pop-up tent, can't have the interviewer get a sunburn. 😛Also, using the grip arm as a baby pin is fine for vertical setups like you show here, but don't use the grip arm as a horizontal overhead baby pin as it doesn't have a safety catch and lights might fall off quite easy.

      It's interesting I've always used them that way because it just gives you a bit more flexibility in fine tuning the light position with the ability to boom it out or place the light maybe where a stand can't directly sit under it. But all the other things he mentioned are also great points that I've never explicitly thought about.

    Your setup is awesome. 32-bit float audio is a gimmick. It just so happens that the best converters probably support the new sales gimmick, but trust me, I'm a computer engineer who makes sound cards, it literally does nothing. 24-bit audio can handle up to 140db dynamic range, and you just can't use all that dynamic range for anything that isn't a science experiment. All they are doing with 32-bit float is converting the 24-bit integer to a 32-bit float, and it's literally just a gimmick because your computer can do that instantly.

    • @videopromike
      @videopromike 22 дні тому

      I’ve been hearing that from a lot of audio technicians. Does that hold true for acquisition as well? I know I’ve tried capturing audio with different recorders and once the recording has clipped, that’s it. I find with 32 bit float I’m able to avoid the clipping. That’s the only thing that I’ve been concerned about when considering 32 bit float.

    • @CaleMcCollough
      @CaleMcCollough 22 дні тому

      @@videopromike You notice the dynamic range a lot more on the OUTPUTS than the inputs. Not all 32-bit ESS converters are as good as the best ESS converters. You need to set the gain so that you capture the dynamic range of the audio input, and the ADC needs to be clean enough that when you amplify the digital signal it isn't just noise.. With a good ADC, you don't need to need to capture all of the 120db dynamic range, for an ADC you will not notice the difference between 110db or 120db because you are not recording anything that loud. For the DAC there is a noticeable jump in quality with the new ESS DAC chips but the older MOTU audio interfaces are still very good and you won't tell the difference on the ADC of an 828MK3 Hybrid compared to a MOTU M6.

    • @RandumbTech
      @RandumbTech 22 дні тому

      32-bit float is not a "gimmick". Sure, for the audio professional, it's probably not necessary because part of their job is literally to manage audio levels. But, for the solo content creator, it's amazing because we no longer have to worry about gain staging.

    • @CaleMcCollough
      @CaleMcCollough 22 дні тому

      @@RandumbTech No. 24-bits can capture 140db dynamic range. Are you really trying to tell me that people are playing and recording 140db audio? GIVE ME A BREAK! No one does that. The converters are only converting an integer to float, which is a gimmick, it literally does nothing to help you out. Your PC will convert the int to float in just a few clock cycles, so you can ignore that CPU overhead. The only way this would make sense is if the sound card was doing some audio DSP like reverb where it had 32-bitr float internal process, but then at that time you would want 64-bit internal processing so you would want a 64-bit float converter, which clearly is even more of a gimmick.

    • @RandumbTech
      @RandumbTech 22 дні тому

      @@CaleMcCollough Not looking to pick a fight, so let's agree to disagree. All I know is when I record in 32-bit float, I get amazing results, regardless of whether it's quiet or loud sounds. I can pull the quiet sounds up without increasing the noise floor and can pull the loud sounds down even though they appear to be clipped. When I record in 24-bit, I can only set the gain to accommodate one or the other. Since I can't actively adjust the gain, the 32-bit float is magic. Hope this helps clarify why it works so well for my use case.

    was on the fence about buying this till I saw the video. Orderd the new set of the Pico Mic 3. Only god awful thing I can see is no USB-C port on the receiver but USB C on the trasmitters themselves which is kind of welcome but also weird that they didn't make a new receiver with USB C? Anyways, I'll check back after it comes in.
