We were Scroll Sawing the Wrong Way the Entire Time
Most scroll saw woodworkers are using templates the wrong way. We’re supposed to put them on the workpiece and cut out the lines…NOPE!
In this video, I explain that there are reasons for not cutting on the lines of a woodworking template. Some scroll saw projects require using an opposite technique of cutting off the line. Next time you’re in the workshop, try this scroll saw trick. It might be just what you need to complete that woodworking project.

You’ve Never Seen Woodworking Like This!

I recreated Deadpool comic book art out of natural wood. No paint. No stain. Just amazingly cool, exotic wood species hand cut to form this picture of Deadpool. Each piece of wood was cut using a scroll saw. It took approximately six months to make due to the complexity of the project and tiny details necessary to craft the image. Scroll saw woodworking doesn’t have to be stuffy or involve maki...
Most Scroll Saw Woodworkers Don’t Know This Exists!

There’s a wood species that most woodworkers don’t know exists and they are missing out! It’s one of the best woods to use for scroll saw projects. That wood is called blue mahoe. Its natural colors and properties make it a dream to use in scroll saw art. I especially like it for adding a touch of highlights to dark areas. The blue provides just enough color contrast. •• About Newton Makes Art•...

There is a different, maybe better way, to use templates in your scroll saw projects. Here’s what I do to get the best looking scroll saw art… Skip the painter’s tape. Skip using packing tape to stick your template to your board. Go with contact paper! Contact paper is the perfect thing for sticking a paper template to wood. It peels off the wood easily. It doesn’t leave a sticky mess. It’s cle...
Scroll Saw Realistic Faces and Skin Tones (No Staining!)
Переглядів 11 тис.8 місяців тому
It’s pretty easy to make scroll saw art using contrasting wood colors, but what if you want a realistic picture? How do you make realistic faces, skin tones, and other artistic effects using wood? The key isn’t using wood species with contrasting colors. It’s about finding just the right variations of the same wood color. In this scroll saw project I wanted to make this insanely cool picture of...

You’ve never seen scroll sawing like this! I need a new Halloween themed scroll saw project. When I saw this picture, I knew it was perfect. It’s four jack-o-lanterns, all with creepy faces. There isn’t a lot of materials needed. I used pretty exotic woods, but it was all tiny offcuts. The pumpkins are osage hedge apple. The interior colors are tigerwood. I used lignum vitae for the pumpkin ste...

“The Winfield collection” makes “scroll saw tape”. It’s clear, 8.5” wide and adhesive on both sides. This may not be the least expensive method but definitely the fastest easiest method. Plus no spray glue… so no gooey messes on anything!

I wished I seen your technique literally a few days ago. I needed to get back to the shop after some time off from the hobby and settled on a simple intarsia. The way you cut the scrap, and saved it to help you line up your pieces, would have helped me on my project. The pattern I used had thick black lines. I will consider this next time.
