This Will Change the Way You Look at Scroll Sawing

- This is the process I use to make scroll saw art regardless of the picture. I get perfectly fitting pieces and artwork that JUMPS out at you by doing these couple of things. It starts with the preparing the picture and setting myself up for success. Not everyone loves comic book art, but everything I show in this video can be used for any type of scroll saw project, especially ones with a lot of complex shapes. If you dig scroll saw art then check out the rest of my channel which is devoted to scroll sawing techniques and projects.
This artwork came from DC Comics Nightwing #66 by Chuck Dixon, pencils by Rick Burchett, and inks by Rob Leigh.

Ive NEVER had the desire to do scroll saw work.... this may change my mind
7 months...
I've definitely had projects that get set aside for long times.
Mine usually isn't because of life getting in the way so much as I'm either distracted by something else (squirrel!) or most often, hit a part that was frustrating me or I was stuck, so started a different project as I always have more than I'll ever be able to finish in my lifetime.
All that being said, I'm working on finishing more, even if I don't think it's 'complete' or the way I wanted it.
That little detail on the cell number... chef's kiss
That’s pretty amazing!
Great job!
I absolutely love what you did with this piece. Awesome video. 😊Linda
Just, WOW Billy. Looks friggin awesome
I always learn something new from watching you do your projects. Really enjoy them. I need to try this style.
Awesome!
Life happens. It's all good to stop and come back to projects later. Thats a lot of tedious work but it's worth it. It looks great. Keep making and stay awesome.
I've always hated intarsia scroll saw work. But you made that look fun. But I love to do silhouette type work. That's my happy place!
Great project, very nicely done.
Super Duper Cool!!!
Outstanding! Very cool!!! GOD bless your hands.
Awesome work like always! clever deign element with the feet.
This is so cool. I am going to do some scroll saw stuff one of these days. Thank you for inspiring me.
Nice work man looks really cool!
Great use of forced perspective relief ! ❤
Amazing, Billy. It looks great. Mind blown AGAIN.
Bill
It felt so good getting this one done. Ya'll didn't see it sitting on the left side of my bench since February!
This is always mind boggling! I've tried scroll saw projects several times... always get frustrated.
But your videos always make me want to try again. If for no other reason to force myself to learn and be patient.
Another brilliant piece, really love this technique you use
Appreciate it. I already have ideas for the next couple projects.
Wow Billy absolutely amazing that looks so awesome you are a true artist and craftsmen keep up the amazing work.
That is fricking cool man
Stunning looking piece, Billy! FANTASTIC work!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks! I'm glad I finished it.
Really cool and inspiring. Makes me want to start a new hobby
That is amazing! It looks better than half of the laser cut stuff out there. 👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome
Thats impressive
Another great video!
Thanks!
Subscribing for sure...great project
When you were talking about that little bit of difference in thickness, my mind automatically heard that line from the movie Waiting: "the difference between ordinary and extraordinary, is that little bit extra" 😂
Wise words. It's also why I strive to wear more than 15 pieces of flair.
@@NewtonMakesArt "so more then?"
"Sigh... we want you to express yourself. And we reward that."
... further in movie...
"*Throws up the bird* this is me, expressing, myself to you!"
Another great movie!!
Oddly, watching this video made me get up and start painting on a portrait I’ve been avoiding all morning (deadline impending) instead of walking over to my woodworking shop.
One thing … not saying you should definitely do this but for some reason I wanted the soles of his feet to be slightly angled topographically to push the illusion. Not sure why. May kinda feel like breaking the fourth wall … I just never know where to go with scroll saw work because it’s 2D…but it’s not… So when do the surface angles start and when do they end?? And then once it’s going that direction it’s relief sculpture which is such a weird in-between as well. So, not sure how far you’d want to push that if you started…could be a black hole. But I think anybody that makes images possibly has that kind of tension going on maybe. (Which makes it wonderfully interesting.)
Perhaps that’s why I got up and started painting (maybe-mostly-also because I don’t own a scroll saw)…
So what I’m saying is:
Wonderful video!
Inspired me to get off my butt.
Definitely Subscribed.
And hoping for more.
AMAZING! keep doing work like that and you'll be sharing a cell with "The Joker" in Arkham Asylum. JS.
Billy this is phonomonal. Love the detail u get within joker and the offset shadow line's wow!👏👏 would love to try to do this. My only thing a would of changed would of been maybe the frame in purple heart??🤔👍🏴
Totally agree with you on the frame.
Just found you today. Awesome work, ive been needing a reason to buy a scroll saw. This is it. What is the genre of art you are searching for? Or maybe the artist? I love the shading/hard outlines. Ive found a few good things, but all of your selections of art are awesome. Thanks for these vids.
I look for comic book art because it often has heavy black lines. Or I'll find an artist I recognize who uses shadow like Michael Cho. Otherwise, I look for something similar to clipart or even tattoo art. You sort of know it when you see it.
Great video and project. Can you share where the contact paper can be purchased?
I just put a link to the brand I use in the video description. It has worked perfect for me.
How do you determine which negative lines to keep for placement, and which negative lines it is okay to obliterate?
Good question. I play with the image on the computer to make sure I have the line thickness and negative space how I like it. I can make dark areas thicker or thinner, see what I prefer, then start the project.
Lazer has taken over scrolling. 😢
I have both. It feels pretty cool making certain things with the laser. Scroll sawing provides a completely different satisfaction.
Great project🎉, what type of printer you used ?
Thanks, I have a Canon iP8700. It's a great printer.
@@NewtonMakesArt Thanks again bro
"Church it up"
Highly technical term! Don't judge me, Riggins!
How much time is in this piece? Wow!
I'm not sure exactly. Typically my projects take 30-40 hours total.
Are you sure 7 months was enough time for the glue to set? That’s cutting it close don’t you think? Pun intended.
