  • This is the process I use to make scroll saw art regardless of the picture. I get perfectly fitting pieces and artwork that JUMPS out at you by doing these couple of things. It starts with the preparing the picture and setting myself up for success. Not everyone loves comic book art, but everything I show in this video can be used for any type of scroll saw project, especially ones with a lot of complex shapes. If you dig scroll saw art then check out the rest of my channel which is devoted to scroll sawing techniques and projects.
This artwork came from DC Comics Nightwing #66 by Chuck Dixon, pencils by Rick Burchett, and inks by Rob Leigh.

    7 months...
I've definitely had projects that get set aside for long times.
Mine usually isn't because of life getting in the way so much as I'm either distracted by something else (squirrel!) or most often, hit a part that was frustrating me or I was stuck, so started a different project as I always have more than I'll ever be able to finish in my lifetime.
All that being said, I'm working on finishing more, even if I don't think it's 'complete' or the way I wanted it.

I've always hated intarsia scroll saw work. But you made that look fun. But I love to do silhouette type work. That's my happy place!

Oddly, watching this video made me get up and start painting on a portrait I’ve been avoiding all morning (deadline impending) instead of walking over to my woodworking shop.
One thing … not saying you should definitely do this but for some reason I wanted the soles of his feet to be slightly angled topographically to push the illusion. Not sure why. May kinda feel like breaking the fourth wall … I just never know where to go with scroll saw work because it’s 2D…but it’s not… So when do the surface angles start and when do they end?? And then once it’s going that direction it’s relief sculpture which is such a weird in-between as well. So, not sure how far you’d want to push that if you started…could be a black hole. But I think anybody that makes images possibly has that kind of tension going on maybe. (Which makes it wonderfully interesting.)
    Perhaps that’s why I got up and started painting (maybe-mostly-also because I don’t own a scroll saw)…
    So what I’m saying is:
    Wonderful video!
Inspired me to get off my butt.
    Definitely Subscribed.
    And hoping for more.

Just found you today. Awesome work, ive been needing a reason to buy a scroll saw. This is it. What is the genre of art you are searching for? Or maybe the artist? I love the shading/hard outlines. Ive found a few good things, but all of your selections of art are awesome. Thanks for these vids.

    • @NewtonMakesArt

I look for comic book art because it often has heavy black lines. Or I'll find an artist I recognize who uses shadow like Michael Cho. Otherwise, I look for something similar to clipart or even tattoo art. You sort of know it when you see it.

How do you determine which negative lines to keep for placement, and which negative lines it is okay to obliterate?

    • @NewtonMakesArt
      @NewtonMakesArt  9 місяців тому

Good question. I play with the image on the computer to make sure I have the line thickness and negative space how I like it. I can make dark areas thicker or thinner, see what I prefer, then start the project.

Are you sure 7 months was enough time for the glue to set? That’s cutting it close don’t you think? Pun intended.
