Big South Fork- Laurel Fork Creek, Station Camp Creek, Historic Homesite, Late Summer Wildflowers
After some health issues and the oppressive summer temperatures taking me off the trail for any strenuous hikes, I finally decided to see exactly what I can handle. The steep hill at the end of Duncan Hollow Road in Big South Fork provided me with just the challenge I needed to prove to myself that I could still do the climbs it takes to hike into the backcountry here. I hiked down the hill to the gorgeous Laurel Fork and Station Camp Creeks, visited the old homesite of Ike King, enjoyed a plethora of late summer wildflowers as many butterflies danced from flower to flower. I was in my own wonderful little world for a few hours.
The hill on the way back out is nothing to take for granted, almost 700 ft. elevation gain in .9 tenths of a mile. That’s steep in anyone’s book. I completed the climb without much difficulty, except for being a bit out of shape. Catching my breath was suddenly more important than stopping because of an overworked heart. I’m sure happy with how my hike went.
Now, all my winter hiking plans are going to happen and I can’t wait!

Big South Fork’s Indian Rockhouse, Late Summer/Early Fall Wildflowers, Storm Damage From Late May

On a day of driving around in Big South Fork looking at the damage from the severe storm on May 26th, I worked a short hike in too. From Sawmill Trailhead I walked out the road a bit to hike the trail to the massive and impressive Indian Rockhouse. Lots of downed trees along the trail but the National Park Service has done a great job of cutting them out of the trail. Indian Rockhouse was, undo...

I set out solo on a search for the historic homesite of William Riley Hatfield. I found absolutely no evidence of any homesite where I went. Recent evidence of a mature male bear was everywhere I went it seemed. I came within a step and a half of being in striking range of a mid sized copperhead. Whether you like them or not, they’re a beautiful creature and belong exactly where I found it. I a...

Good job climbing that hill, Randy, it is a steep one! Glad you’re feeling better. My mother grew up at that first ruin you visited, back in the late 1940’s-50’s. Kirby and Lina King were her Uncle and Aunt. Ike King was her school teacher at the Station Camp School.

I seen you out Saturday as I was wrapping up my run on Fork Ridge. Big thing with the wood is it’s by permit only through big south fork. Rangers will check that if they see people getting any. Sawmill to slave falls is clear, definitely a lot of trees down in the area. Couple trees went down again from Needle Arch to Jakes place. Twin Arches loop had several more trees go down lately. The things caught up in other trees are slowly falling. Definitely a lot of history to be told from the area. My great grandparents homestead at Charit, great uncles lived off of fork ridge before the park service took it over. Slowly I’m catching more stories of the area from the last.

I thought that cemetery name was odd as well. I read it was also called Thompson at one time. There was a church by it but burned and never rebuilt. Thought about walking to bluff line behind it but never did. Maybe a rockhouse behind it?

Yes, John Smith Road down to the river and up Bill Branch to Calista Falls. It’s well worth the climb back out of there to the trailhead. I need to get back there when there’s some better water flow. I’m just awaiting the wetter, cooler winter months for places like this. I have identified a few other places with good possibilities of locating some undocumented waterfalls. BSF still has places like that! Take care TrailHunters, be safe and stay healthy.

They repopulated the bears here about 25 years ago. They are more of an inconvenience than anything. They sure leave a mess anywhere they go. But they get rid of yellow jacket and other ground nesting stinging critters. I’m plenty happy about that at least. Thanks baneveryhing. I appreciate it. Take care!

Thank you WOY. These old homesites are at least 150 years old. They were originally log cabins so that part of them is long gone. All I can hope to find are stone foundation stones on whe remains of a fallen fireplace/chimney. It’s there somewhere. I’ll be going back when the leaves are gone in the winter to look some more. I have been looking at some old maps and have a new lead. Hopefully that’ll work out. Take care Ladies. I do appreciate it. Hint: search “Charit Creek Lodge” in Big South Fork and see what you think. Hey Angie! I’m still alive kicking! I have to get back up there in the winter. As of this hike, Divide Road/Peters Mountain Road is still shut down in Tennessee from Fork Ridge to Three Forks. That’s why I had to drive through Pickett to Parker’s Mountain, down to Bell Farm, then up to Peter’s Mountain. The NPS won’t allow the crews to clear the debris from the late May storm when the temperatures and humidity is high. Hopefully it’ll be cleared by the time the fall colors arrive. It’s always beautiful then. That copperhead was just doing its thing. It never moved at all. I was within a step and a half from it. It just wanted its camouflage to do the job and let me move on, which I did. It lives there, I’m just passing through… There’s a big, resident male bear up there. He’s all over the place out that ridge. The worst part of the day was the hundreds of seed ticks I picked up in that field. They were awful. Another reason to hike off trail in the winter! Thank you so much Angie. I’m looking forward to October. It’ll be a great time. Please take care, stay healthy and safe!

Snakes, bears and bees are all part of the outdoors, always will be. Having said that, I do believe it’ll be cooler weather, like after a good frost or two, before I venture off trail again. Thanks Kerry. Take care my friend.
