Big South Fork- Laurel Fork Creek, Station Camp Creek, Historic Homesite, Late Summer Wildflowers

  • After some health issues and the oppressive summer temperatures taking me off the trail for any strenuous hikes, I finally decided to see exactly what I can handle. The steep hill at the end of Duncan Hollow Road in Big South Fork provided me with just the challenge I needed to prove to myself that I could still do the climbs it takes to hike into the backcountry here. I hiked down the hill to the gorgeous Laurel Fork and Station Camp Creeks, visited the old homesite of Ike King, enjoyed a plethora of late summer wildflowers as many butterflies danced from flower to flower. I was in my own wonderful little world for a few hours.
The hill on the way back out is nothing to take for granted, almost 700 ft. elevation gain in .9 tenths of a mile. That’s steep in anyone’s book. I completed the climb without much difficulty, except for being a bit out of shape. Catching my breath was suddenly more important than stopping because of an overworked heart. I’m sure happy with how my hike went.
Now, all my winter hiking plans are going to happen and I can’t wait!

I’m thankful that I’m on the comeback trail Tony. I easily could have had the “big one.” I had a 100% blockage, actually 2 blockages, in the main artery in my heart, yet here I am. I plan on making the most of my life from here on.
Thanks for watching my videos. They’re all from my love of the outdoors. That’s where I feel my best.
Take care, be safe and stay healthy.

I appreciate it Greg, especially coming from a great friend from our youths.
I’m so happy to have dodged a more serious health issue and to be at this point in my recovery. I had an even more strenuous hike since this video. 7 1/4 miles with the steep, tough hike out from Charit Creek Lodge at the end. One of our mutual friends and a frequent hiking partner accompanied me. I was in good hands!
Hopefully your recovery is such that you can join us this winter. You’d be very welcome for sure.
Take care my friend, be safe and healthy.

Have you heard of or been to Difficulty Creek In BSF? A friend fished there once years ago and has forgotten where it is:-) BTW Thanks for posting your Vids of Big South Fork. I've been to The Fork many times , but not recently... Wishing you good health!

Thank you for the video. I'm glad that you didn't let the health troubles stop you from getting out in the woods.
I'm surprised to see that much water in the creek. Planning on hiking a loop in this area soon. I was concerned about water sources.

Thanks bikhills. I’m rallying back from my health problems and hopefully will be going strong for the winter off trail season. I’m pumped up for it!
Laurel Fork, Station Camp, Parch Corn and No Business Creeks will all have water. I wouldn’t count on any water sources up near the ridge tops though. You’ll have a great hike I’m sure. BSF is so gorgeous in the fall. It’s very underrated for its fall colors!
Take care and be safe on your hike!

Yep, that hill was my first real test since my heart procedure. I’m very pleased with my progress. You’re absolutely right Mike, staying active is the key. At our age, if we stop now, life would definitely be shortened. I plan on hanging around for a long time!
      Thanks brother, take care!

Well,I'm sure glad you got up that ridge! I never knew there were otter in the BSF and I can't recall if you've ever filmed them? If you have then I totally forgot about it. Awesome job my friend!

Thanks Jim. I was out of breath a couple of times but I had no issues with my heart. I’m on my way back!
The otters come up these streams from the river. They’ll wipe almost every fish out bigger than a minnow. They’re tough on crawfish and bullfrogs too. Then they’ll go back down to the river. They’re just eating machines. I’ve seen a couple but couldn’t get them on video.
I appreciate you my friend. Take care and stay safe.

Good job climbing that hill, Randy, it is a steep one! Glad you’re feeling better. My mother grew up at that first ruin you visited, back in the late 1940’s-50’s. Kirby and Lina King were her Uncle and Aunt. Ike King was her school teacher at the Station Camp School.

I can only imagine how beautiful a place it was back in the day. I wish I could go back in time and see it as it once was.
That hill was my first real test since I had my heart procedure. I passed it! I’ve since hiked almost 7 1/2 miles and came up the hill from Charit Creek. I did fine with that one too. I’m on the comeback trail Chris! It’s going to be a great winter of hiking. I already have a bunch of plans. I’m just happy to know I can still get out and do it some more.
Take care Chris, stay safe and healthy.

@@papawinthewoods my Mom said all the bottom land was cleared farmland. She remembered walking through the fields and seeing arrowheads everywhere.

Good to see you out. Know what you mean about hills, being in middle South Carolina most of the year has gotten me lazy on hills. I'm hoping to get a lot of hiking in this fall. I have hip replacement surgery scheduled Nov 5th, but I'm considering pushing it out to Dec. I've been postponing it since Oct 2019 😅 pray you keep getting your strength back daily. Happy hiking. 🥾🥾

@@papawinthewoods no relatives or connections to BSF, but I hike there quite a bit and many of your videos have been included in my hiking agendas. I live in Bowling Green Ky, but my family is in Tennessee so I have spent time on both sides of BSF. Just a beautiful place!

Isn’t it amazing to see that post deteriorate over the years! What is it w you and equestrian folks😀 hope you left the ticks behind. Ike King was a unique individual.

That post still had a flat top last year. Now it’s sharpened like a pencil.
We need to get back down there this winter. There should be a couple more homesites near Ike Kings. Plus, there’s a Volkswagen Bus I’d like to locate.
      Thanks Kerry.
