A Return Hike to the Mysterious Chi-Rho of Big South Fork on Sunset Overlook .

- Matt Choate had expressed a strong interest in seeing the Chi-Rho carving in Big South Fork for himself. We chose a day to hike to its location on the breathtaking Sunset Overlook. So Matt, and son Micah arrived for the hike at the parking area out East Rim Overlook Road right on time. We had never met in person, so after our introductions and sharing some of our experiences we headed out the very well kept 1.2 mile trail.
No one seems to know who carved the combination of two ancient Greek symbols into the stone, when it was done or why. To me, it’s one of Big South Forks biggest mysteries!

Wow, very interesting carving indeed!! Thx Papaw, this area never seems to amaze me.
It’s an odd place for an ancient Greek symbol, later used by the Romans to be… and no one seems to know why it’s there.
I know of other carvings in BSF but they’re eroded away to the point where it’s hard to tell what they’re about. One has actually been semi destroyed by someone with an axe or something. There’s a cross carved right above the destroyed area. Strange…
I’m going to go back to the other one and make an attempt to decipher it, hopefully with some success.

Good seeing ya out and about Papaw! BSF is looking pretty this year.
I’m trying to get going again. I’m having a few side effects from the medications I’m on. Been going back and forth to the doctor and have another appointment coming up next week.
Except for the storm damage from almost 3 weeks ago, BSF is looking good. There are still areas closed off to the public. I’m anxious to get back over there and see how much damage was done. I got caught out Divide Road when the storm hit and was stranded for hours. There was extensive damage to say the least! I almost had to spend the night over there!
