Potential Fiat Ducato Injector Rust Problems
It’s worth checking the seal against the windscreen and the water drain tubes to make sure water isn’t leaking into the engine bay. There is a black plastic cover to protect the top of the engine where the injectors are but beware as water could get in there and if left unchecked could potentially rust your injectors making them vey difficult to remove should they need replacing. This is particularly important with Motorhomes and camper vans that are often parked up for long periods of time.

So having fitted Sumo springs to the rear of my Fiat Ducato, video linked here: ua-cam.com/video/CW6tsStf8Ck/v-deo.html I’ve decided to upgrade to double rear leaf springs so this will allow more suspension travel and in my opinion this will work well in combination with the Sumo Springs. There is a clip at the end of the video that shows them working well together. The double leaf springs has ...
Fitting the Thule Elite Van XT Bike Rack to a Fiat Ducato Van

A short video of fitting the Thule Elite Van XT Black 2 bike carrier. I also had to remove the dealer decals as they were in the way preventing me from fixing the bottom bar. At the end of the video is a short demonstration of how the bikes load. All in all a good bike rack and the black colour matches the van.

So over 2 years on which ones sre you still using and are they any good?
Hi thanks for the comments. So I’ve used most things apart from the LED light and the fire extinguisher thankfully. The Ridge Monkey is really good and gets used often.
Great advice, i would suggest using ACF50 or muckoff HbC1 as they are designed to protect engines from corrosion
Thanks for the comments and good advice 👍
Useful reminder, thanks. It can be awkward to remove debris from these pipes but you can get a drain unblocked which connects to a Karcher (it has three back jets to push through to the blockage and a forward jet to break up the blockage.) It has never failed. I use pot scrubber as a filter. Let’s water through but catches bigger debris.
Thanks for the useful info. The pot scrubber idea sounds good 👌
Thank you! You didn't show how to make the most difficult purchase. How to attach the bars to the car. The final installation is easy.
Yes sorry I didn’t film that part and realised after that I hadn’t
@@nickharper6436 Thanks anyway. Your video was helpful. I found a German video where the installation of the strips was explained. I know English better. Happy summer and greetings from Finland.
Totally skipped the glue step wow
Yes I could have kicked myself for missing that bit and realised once Id stick it down but no going back at that point 🙈
Do you know where the middle drain pipe runs out. Mine is blocked and I can't clear it. I've seen a spare on ebay and the problem is the stupid design at the end of the pipe it's not open it's shaped and has a really narrow flat exit, which is clearly blocked on mine. But I can't find a workshop drawing that shows me where it comes out. I'm assuming it somewhere around the driver's side wheel arch.
Hi Andy it’s in the drivers side wheel arch behind the wheel towards the top of that makes sense. I squeezed mine by reaching down inside the engine bay. Squash the pipe vigorously as I did mine and it eventually cleared. Hope this helps.
@@nickharper6436 that’s great, thanks Nick.
Thank you 👍
No worries and glad you found it useful.
Hi nick what wind Defactors have you got on your motorhome pls They look wider than the ones I've seen
Hi they are the HEKO ones which I got of eBay
Greetings from Finland and thanks for this video. I just changed my motorhome to a Sunlight T67 which is built on a Ducato about the same age. I got some tips on removing the covers etc. from you.
Many thanks for your comments and glad you found the video useful 👍
Hi nick, have you changed anything at the front?
Hi I fitted Sumo springs to the front as well. Link here to the video: ua-cam.com/video/Dcx2SLjAu9c/v-deo.htmlsi=CoBZsLOCRPBETxIu
I thought those springs are not supposed to be touching unless you are driving over a bump.
Ideally that would be the case. I’ve added double leaf springs so they are just clear now. Thanks for your comments.
Where did you buy Sumo Springs. Their website says no dealers in Europe. Do they have to be imported from the US?
Hi thanks for watching the video. I got mine off Amazon and they did come from the US. Rhodes vans also used to sell them but not sure if they still do.
Hi good video, to stop any tree debris etc, blocking the drain pipes try some pound shop stainless steel pot scrubbers at the water entry point to work as filters. Ed,
Fantastic idea, thanks Edward
Thanks for the video. I’ve got a 2022 Ducato and had all of the covers and pipes off for cleaning today. There was a lot of debris in the drain channels and tubes and some corrosion on the injectors already. I’ve put a bead of clear silicone between the scuttle panel and windscreen as this looked like a poor fit. The top of the engine under the plastic cover is a perfect trap for water. I’ve removed any surface rust and treated it temporarily with some WD-40 for now but I think AC-50 is a much better option over winter. I think the camper ideally needs to be under some shelter next winter. Not sure if an engine cover would help long term or just trap moisture in.
Thanks for the comments Gary. I think regular use is the best preventative measure but as you say undercover otherwise. Some of the external screens cover the drain holes and would prevent water getting in the engine bay possibly.
If you’ve not spotted them, there’s two smaller drain holes in addition to the main three. They’re behind the bigger side drains. Keep these cleared too
Thanks I hadn’t noticed these. I’ll have a look 👀
We’re so I get?
We’re do I get them gas bottles?

Hai Nick, where did you buy the cable that ensures that the door cannot open further than 90 degrees?
Hi Janine, this was fitted to the vehicle from new so it was a fitment by Adria. The Ducato van from new does have a system though. Hope this helps
Hey Nick, how tall are you? I'm looking at one of these but it seemed a struggle for yourself and I'm only 5'6!
Same here 5’7 and i want to be able to put a bike cover on. I was wondering about the disadvantages of using the lowest position for the platform on the Thule - I also have an Adria on a Ducato. I note that all of the reviews seem to have gone for the middle position.
I’m 5’10 but you could buy the carriers at the lower level. I sometimes use a small folding step and that helps especially when putting a cover on.
I would think you could use the lower position without any problem. I use a folding plastic step now which makes it easier. Thanks for the comments.
Have had some great sessions here and round at Hunstanton. Not been since mid summers day 2020 as moved another 2 hours further away than the already 3 hour drive I had, but now only 55 mins from the west coast. Must get back there one day.
Thanks for the comments Mark. Yes there are some nice spots around here but sounds like your ok only 55 mins away from the water 👍
Nick, great video, we decided to buy this rack for our Promaster in the states. Wondering what rear door windows you have fitted to your van?
Thanks for the comments. The windows were already fitted to the van and I believe they are made by dometic but not 100% sure.
Hi Nick, Thanks for your very informative video. I have a 2021 Pilote with a Ducato as well and I have the exact same problem. The only way I could unblock it was to fill it with water and squeeze the pipe as you did very low down and hey-presto water gushed out. I've ran a few gallons through it and all is now ok. I've sealed up that useless pipe joint as well and make up some mesh covers for the inlets.
Thanks for the comments. Yes you have to keep an eye on it but especially if parking the MH up over winter for example. Glad you found it useful
can I have the model number of front and rear sumo springs? my ducato is 2021
Hi these are the ones I purchased from Amazon the fronts are: SuperSprings CSS-1195 | Coil SumoSprings for various applications | 1.95 inch inner wall height, Black And the rear are Supersprings SSR-313-54 SumoSprings
Thank you for the video very helpful. Can you tell me if there are any airbag issues when taking the seats off ?
Thanks for the comments. Not for me personally as I left every thing connected and just laid the seat to the rest giving access to the batteries rather than taking to seat completely out of the van.
Hi Nick when fitting your new alloy wheels did you adjust your original suspension set up please thank you in advance
Hi thanks for the comments. Not initially but later fitted SUMO springs front and rear and HD leaf springs on the rear. I’ve lined the videos below which may be of interest to you. ua-cam.com/video/CW6tsStf8Ck/v-deo.htmlsi=258HJbMJ3iriZif2 ua-cam.com/video/Dcx2SLjAu9c/v-deo.htmlsi=2C6D4VF7T3rODpht ua-cam.com/video/Fm3afkwuYpA/v-deo.htmlsi=faWOLZwT9Jh1zWm1

I really wanted to see the door brackets fitted....in particular what glue do you use? It's not clear from the instructions and no glue was supplied.
Hi thanks for the comments and sorry the vid didn’t show the fitting of the brackets. I was concentrating on getting it right and forgot the camera 🙈. The glue I used was sikaflex 252 that I got from Amazon. Hope this helps
@@nickharper6436 Hi Nick, this doesn't particularly help, as it sounds as though you're relying entirely on the Sika 252 to hold up the laden rack! From the video it looks like there are clamps of some kind that slot over each side of the door - can you confirm? Thanks!
Yes there is clamps at either end of the brackets that are screwed up snug but not too tight to buckle the door edges.
@@nickharper6436 Thank you for taking the time to reply 😊
Thanks Nick 👍🏻 Have a 2020 Ducato and couldn’t work out how to remove the engine cover, was worried I’d break it when attempting to get it off, after watching this video was able to manage it easy. Thankfully like yours wasn’t much sign of rust but gave it a good spraying of ACF50 which is all I had to hand other than WD40, figured the ACF50 would be the better option but quite like your idea of using copper spray. By the way are you located at Aylsham? I’m not too far away from you if so 👍🏻
Glad you found the video useful and thanks for the comments.
We have2
You’ll save a lot of money on exchangeable bottles for sure 👌
These seem very, very expensive compared to an airbag.
Hi David yes they have gone up in price considerably since I fitted mine in 2022. Just looked on Amazon order history and mine cost me £260. They are now £440 😳. That said they are still really good but not necessarily a cheaper option that airbags but are easier to fit than airbags so could save something on fitting if you did a diy job as opposed to getting a fitter to fit the airbags. Both are good options although I have seen on a forum of some having problems with airbags leaking etc.
Thanks Nick
So you add spacers to increase the ride height?
Yes you can but I haven’t relied on SUMOs totally and also fitted HD leaf springs!
I watch this video to see how the brackets attach to the door and you never filmed it so to me it was worthless video
Yes I forgot to do that and kicked myself after for not filming it 🙈. Thanks for the comments though and sorry it wasn’t much use to you!
@@nickharper6436 Well, I appreciate you getting back to me. Sorry for being so harsh. Had a bad day.
No worries we all have them
You should consider filming the van rather than yourself. We want to actually see the van!!!!!
Hi Peter and thanks for your comments. I’ll think about that in the future although there was a decent amount of inside the van IMO
Really helpful video Nick. It looks like you were able to lay the seat on its back while you were fitting your shunt - were you able to keep seatbelt pretensioner plug connected during the fitting?
Hi thanks for the comments and yes it wasn’t disconnected!
Hi Nick, thinking of getting one of these. Can you close you blind with it stuck to the screen still ?
Yes I can on my van which has the one blind that pulls up from the bottom of the screen. I’m not sure about the ones that pull from the sides though but would have thought there would be enough clearance.
@@nickharper6436 thanks for that. Any more video to come out soon ?
Yes hopefully. I upgraded the headlights so got to edit that one and also some lights on the inside too!
@@nickharper6436 look forward to it 👍🏻
Hi, apparently, those bump stops are actually spring assistors and as such are supposed to be in contact with the top of the spring. ( i did the same job on my citroen camper but fitted triple leaf springs. It was over kill to be honest but it looks like the van is empty ! However i have found that the front needs raising as well now as the rear sits so high ! I also fitted new bump stops and shocks as they came as a kit. £350 from midland springs in case anyone is interested. 👍👍
Thanks for the comments and yes I think they are assisters as you say. I put SUMOs on the front to. It has made a difference to the ride but only a slight increase in height to counteract my double leaf springs
Thanks for that, i think I'm sold!
Yes I’m certainly happy with mine and thanks for the comments
Thank you for posting. 👍
No worries and glad you found it useful
Hi Nick, I have just received my sumo-springs and have attempted to remove the two spacers in order to go down to one. You made it look easy in your video! Did you have problems undoing the bolt on the first one? I’m reluctant to start clamping it in a vice in case I damage it. Any tips?
I didn’t clamp it in a vice and a bit of force with a socket and hand holding the Sumo spring on the floor did it for me.
Ok thanks. I’ll try and source a longer socket wrench handle.
I’m sure that will sort it Robert. Hope it all goes well
Hi Nick, Success! I invested in a strap wrench that allowed me to get enough purchase on the sumo spring in order to undo the bolt. Thanks for the info.
@@robertprice5087 cool glad you got it sorted Robert 👍
Thank you very much for showing, explaining and giving highly appreciated tipps for solutions. Kind regards from Moritz from Hamburg (Ducato built 2019). I will check those wholes and pipes tomorrow. So good to know the importance. Have a peaceful and healthy christmas time 🙏
Many thanks for your positive comments and a peaceful Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family.
Thanks for the great video Where did you buy the sumo springs ?
Thanks for the comments. I bought them of Amazon and they came from the US but had to pay tax but were still cheaper than uk prices at the time!
Do you have a link?
Good video! Did you disconnect battery when you did this??
Thanks for the comments. No I didn’t disconnect the battery as I wanted to trace back to see where the fault was.
Hi Nick. Very useful video on fitting a dashcam, thanks. I've no experience of dash cams, so thought I'd just go with the one you installed. On looking, however, I see there's more than one model. Did yours come with an SD card? What size?
Thanks for the comments Sandie. I put a sandisk 64GB which works well. Mine was the basic model which is ok but you can get them from Road Angel with a higher resolution.
Cheers Nick, just ordered a 7.5 👍🏆
great video! We might look into getting these!
Many thanks for the comments
good job! thank you. by the way what size are the tires?
What does your van weigh in total?
3.5 Tonne
A great saving when you fill yourself but a bit of advice always use a good set of gloves when filling lpg as a cold burn from lpg can be worse than a hot burn..
Thanks Dave, yes I do use gloves all the time now when filling!
17:07 the purpose of using indicators is letting others know what's your intended direction. leaving roundabout with the right indicator until it self cancels is misinforming drivers waiting to enter the roundabout that your intention is to keep going round.
We all make the odd mistake especially when speak to camera! Thanks for pointing it out though.
