Carving a Spoon with a Knife
Переглядів 2512 роки тому
Sitting around in silence with a knife and a piece of wood is one of the great pleasures in life for a woodworker like me. Carving a spoon from a piece of poplar is simple and satisfying - the even grain and softness of the poplar make it an ideal wood for carving. To soften the grain further, I soaked some blanks in water for ~48 hours. I wasn't sure it would work, but it turned out great! Thi...

I thought it would be a great opportunity to try out my new Morakniv sloyd knife and whittle a quick magic wand with absolutely zero talking. Looking into getting the same dust rite from Rockler. Out of curiosity, when it's running can you hear any vibration noise to ON THE OUTSIDE of wall that is mounted on when it's running? My old one is mounted to an interior wall and you can hear the vibration very loud from the other side of wall... thanks

    • @MrLower
      @MrLower 5 днів тому

      Not gonna lie, yes. It's not unbearable during normal day activity, but if someone was trying to take a nap in the other room it might be bothersome. I have wondered if putting some foam and rubber washers on the mount and screws might dampen the noise and vibrations but I haven't tried it yet.

      @MrLower thank you, that shouldn't be that much of a problem then. My house is a split level so the interior garage wall is shared with the kids play room but the collector I have now can be heard from the kitchen because the vibration is so loud and it's new.. I hate it lol

    Isn’t simply carving a stick into another type of stick so satisfying!! 😁 I’m a newbie wand maker using just hand tools and it was nice to find proof of others making wands without using a lathe or belt sander! If you’re interested I’d love to hear your thoughts on my first wand carving attempts, video just released on my channel

      Honestly, my personal experience is that it is often way easier to do it by hand with just a knife compared to using powertools where everything can be ruined in just a matter of seconds, as well as causing realy nasty injuries, if used correctly, like shown here a sharp knife is a lot more safe, a common misstake is to think a dull knife is safer, but the problem is that one need to use a lot more force, the risk of slipping will also increase, and with that comes a risk of much worse injuries compared to a sharp knife where one need to use very little force, that is the reason i gave sharp carving knifes to my sister kids. I am not consider my self a good woodcarver, but it is a realy fun hobby to learn on mu opinion! I whish You good luck with Your new hobby! Woodcarving is realy a hobby that fit all ages, both little kids and elderly people and anyone in beween!

    Hi Mr. Lower! We are making great progress but have gotten stuck at the step of cutting out the birds mouth, also the cutting off the edge of the rafter to make it perpendicular to the ground. We use the pen tool to draw a line, but then can’t seem to highlight the small triangle or use the push-pull tool to cut it out. Any tips for us?

    A bit late, but I moved and I need to finally get the dust collection hose attached and to stay attached. Did you have trouble with it? I couldn't get it to stay on the short pipe on the shroud. If you had trouble and figured out something clever I'd love to know about it. Or, if you didn't I'd like to know that too. 😊

    We’re having trouble creating the 2x4 studs. Every time we use the rectangle tool to create the shape of the 2x4 and then use push-pull to pull it up, it connects the 2x4 to the base plate so that they’re all one piece. Any tips for us?

    • @MrLower
      @MrLower 9 місяців тому

      I heard once upon a time there were some plugins for the paid version that could generate a parts list based on your components, but I haven't looked into it. I tend to do it the old fashioned way - counting parts and putting them into a spreadsheet. Sorry I can't be more helpful

    Great video ... I have learned a lot that I did not already know! Question: at 19:20 you are cutting vertical ends on the rafters ... I do exactly what you've done and when I try to push/pull I get the 'ole circle with the slash 🚫 ... thoughts? Just tried an experiment ... created another rafter and was able to cut the end with the push/pull but only before making it a component. That's my workaround but just curious why it worked for you as a component ... unless its something new over the past two years to the free version.

    • @MrLower
      @MrLower 9 місяців тому

      Just off the top of my head, it sounds like you might be trying to push/pull a component. You can't edit components directly - if you want to get in to edit them, you have to double-click (or mac equiv), which will "open up" the component for editing. It puts a big wireframe box around the object and darkens everything else. When you're at a level where the push/pull tool hovering over a side causes it to shade, then you're at the correct level to edit. If I misunderstood your situation please let me know.

    This seems like a real stretch. Sure you can do it in Sketch Up, but is it really the "best" tool for the job? Much easier to use something like Chief Architect. That does so much of the hard work for you.

    • @MrLower

      If you have that software already, then it makes sense to use it. But given the scope of the project, I think it would probably be overkill to invest the time and money in such a professional grade architecture program just to design a DIY tool shed.
