I am attempting to build alongside you and when placing the beams I am trying the method you use of "/3" to evenly space the beams but it never works. Could anyone possibly clarify this for me, it sometimes does nothing or sometimes deletes the move copy beam, but never works as shown
When you have your copied component, you have to first drop it down where you want it (either by clicking, or typing a measurement and hitting 'enter'). after that, you can type '/3' + enter and it will divide the space. The key is that the component has to already be set in its place before the '/3' works - if your component is still attached to your cursor and you type anything, the program is looking for a linear measurement to see how far to move the component, not a multiplier or divisor. '/3' translates to 0/3" (zero thirds of an inch, or zero inches) which drops the component exactly in its original spot. You can see this if you move your component afterwards - they'll be stacked on top of each other! Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions.
This seems like a real stretch. Sure you can do it in Sketch Up, but is it really the "best" tool for the job? Much easier to use something like Chief Architect. That does so much of the hard work for you.
If you have that software already, then it makes sense to use it. But given the scope of the project, I think it would probably be overkill to invest the time and money in such a professional grade architecture program just to design a DIY tool shed.
You're probably correct. I'm not a tradesman myself - more a DIY-er. I figure it probably isn't terribly critical for stability for something as small as a shed, but for a larger structure I can see how that would be important for strength and stability. Good spot!
Help! We’re stuck at minute 6:11. We can’t get the “divide 3” function to work to create two more equally spaced beams. We have the first two beams at the edges. What are we doing wrong?
So I'm guessing that you may have "clicked off" after you dropped down the second beam. The "divide" or "multiply" function only works if you do it as the immediate next thing after you place the second beam after the move-copy. You can't select any other tool or click on any other component before you do the divide thing. So try placing the second beam after the move-copy, take your hand completely off the mouse, and type "/3" and press 'enter'. If that doesn't work then let me know
I'm trying to follow along with you as well. I'm stumped at the 8:20 mark when you select all the floor joists and then move/copy them over to the next beam bay. It won't let me select more than one component for some reason. Any advice? Thanks, great video btw!!!
If I recall, I think I am holding 'Ctrl' while clicking on each component. Generally doing 'control-click' is how you select multiple individual files, like in Windows, and the shortcut works here too. If you're on Mac, I'm not sure what the equivalent is, but it should be similar. LMK if that helps.

The outside component is called a band. In this build the added 2x4 is one band. The 4x4 is a band, also.

Shouldn’t the sub floor be staggered? I’m relatively new to carpentry and thought the seams should never line up.
