  • I always get asked what it's like to do distance learning while teaching woodshop. Short answer: it ain't easy! Still, there's plenty to cover from career skills to safety and cleanup to planning and design with SketchUp. Some things don't change from in-person instruction; kids still want to strike up conversations to get out of having to do work (but we don't mind sometimes because it makes the job that much more enjoyable)
Today was the first day I took my class into my garage to show them some of the personal projects I've been working on, and they got to star in their own class UA-cam video along the way.
We talk about careers in the construction industry, and I played Mike Claudio's video, How To Get Started In CONSTRUCTION Without EXPERIENCE [AND BE SUCCESSFUL] (No, I didn't ask for permission. Forgiveness?). One of my kids even does me a favor and name-drops Bobby Duke Arts and William Osman. (Love those kids!)
Nobody said this would be easy, but we make the most of it.

William Osmond is hilarious! Good questions from your students! Well, student. It sounds like one is talking. And good to have a backup teacher in the house ;) Interesting watch!

Thank you! Honestly I wasn't expecting this to be all that interesting - more of a "day in the life of" thing in response to the amused pity I get from people when they find out I'm distance-teaching woodshop. The wall of blank screens is disheartening, but in a sense it is a lot like presenting to a camera lens on UA-cam for an audience who may or may not be listening. Its that one lone voice now and then (like your comment) which reminds me that its worth it :)
