I am a lifetime fan of Lego and an eternal student of Science and Technology. Lego enabled me at a very young age to learn so much about mechanical and electrical concepts. This hobby... no this lifestyle, has given me so much over the years. It is my goal to share my knowledge and passion with the Lego community as they have done with me. Play Well!
Lego Hopper Wagons! modernized 4536 (free instructions)
I didn't even remember this set from the 9v Lego train era until it was posted in our discord (linked below). Huge thanks to Robomemer26 for reminding me of this set and providing a Studio file to get started with. After a few adjustments I have a design I am happy with and wanted to share.

How did BlueBrixx get started? Questions from our community!
Переглядів 66212 годин тому
I've had a lot of fun with the BlueBrixx sets I've ordered over the last year. I am very glad to see a company making not only brick built trains but accessories like level crossings, train sheds, signal boxes and much more. I had the opportunity to sit down with Ross, who is a Jr. Social Media Manager with BlueBrixx, to ask many questions provided by our community. Be sure to check out the lin...

Well I did warn everyone that I've never worked on a project this large before and I couldn't promise it would be completed. This project was a great mix of Lego Mindstorms, monorail and Aquazone, some of the very things that kept Lego in my mind throughout my li...

There's nothing I love more than custom software / firmware for Lego electronics. Diego really knocked it out of the park with this one. Controlling the DACTA Control Lab with a Raspberry Pi and a mobile phone works so well. You can be up and running before a PC would even be booted into Windows. I'm sure this isn't the last you'll see of this software on the channel so be sure to check back in...

I have multiple bluebrixx sets and they are amezing, you can always contact them and get a replacement part from them. So far I'm 100% for bluebrixx I find it close to lego quality wise🔥
what's the programme you use if you don't mind me asking
You didn't have anything to go behind thd loc? But I must say those 5 hoppers + endwagon look nice. I have build a big hopper on a split level train base ( inspired on the bigger old yellow one). Olso build similar to the old blue one but with other corner color because of price... Grtz, SG from Belgium 🇧🇪
Well most of my other rolling stock was spoken for 😅. I tend to assign cars to specific locos I like the small log cars being pulled by the small My Own Train steam locomotive.
I really enjoy your content, thank you.
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video! It helped me fix a motor with the same issue.
Glad I could help!
hah! I picked up one of these hoppers by chance (and a bunch of other 90's trains!) on fb marketplace the other month.. all cleaned up and listed for sale on my BL store.. as it's not really what I collect... but hoping they'll go to a good home! ;)
A few things: One, the inner child in me says to load up the red mini boxcar with cookie tiles. Two, nice seeing 2150 in the background, I hope to receive my own copy of 2150 for Christmas. And three, coal hoppers or gravel hoppers? Anyways, that’s all, Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
1. I'm trying to watch my weight, a mini boxcar full of cookies may be counterproductive in that regard 😅 2. The 2150 station I built a while back, in my usual style of using more modern parts to save on cost. I made a custom base for it and didn't use the baseplates, used windows that were easier to find etc. I originally planned on making the yellow version (4554) but yellow can be really tough to find matching pieces. 3. Not sure what these will carry, I still have the My Own Train hopper wagons as well so ideally they would carry different loads. If I ever get around to making some industry MOCs or finding sets that would work I'll decide then
@@BatteryPoweredBricks Cool!
box car is the word for the red car
I guess I just think of the term "boxcar" describing American style boxcars and for this one I'd say it more closely resembles an old British goods wagon due to it's size and having two fixed axles
Hey battery powered bricks what is the cheapest way to buy motors?
What kind of motor? For Powered Up motors buying them directly from Lego is the cheapest, as long as they have them in stock. Power Functions and 9v motors it just depends. I've found good deals on Bricklink and I've also found good deals on eBay and Mercari. But finding those deals can take a lot of searching over a long period of time
Ok
Thanks for showing this and sharing the instructions. The styling is great and definitely suits the era of when the 4563 came out. I should build a few of these for my 4563 set. But I would have to use the light grey pieces to match...! :)
Great fun re-engineering the old wagons using new parts
the hardest part was redesigning the ends, those inverted blue corner slopes are pricey
Nice
Note: The original 4536 is having a latch on the bottom side. Originally they're built on that same train base as the 4563 loco (part 4178). So if you're going for a quarry, you might include a track for self unloading those cars.
I mean to mention it in the video but RoboMemer26 didn't include the latch in his version and I didn't either. It was much easier to just build on plates. I wanted to keep costs down and I rarely worry about play features, although I can certainly appreciate them. I just like them to look good for videos 😅.
Yeah. Remember those days when LEGO was selling individual train cars? I'll never understand why that isn't a thing anymore. Specifially, I love the 4536. I got the 4563 as a present. From there it took me three months of saving. And I bought the hopper. One piece. I love this car so much. It's timeless. I'm having a few now. I rebuilt it in different colors - for coal and for grain. I recommend you to try a 4x version. :)
I saw a video recently of someone who had several of them, all in different colors. I do like the idea of having different colors for different loads. What do you mean by a 4x version?
@@BatteryPoweredBricks 4achsle version: You stretch it a bit and have it on two boogies.
For the ends of the hoppers coming off easily, maybe you could use 4 of the corner-tiles (14719 on bricklink) to secure them.
Yeah I mentioned that in the video, it's actually pretty tough to pull those pieces off because the the 2x2 slope piece. Without it the corner tiles would have been necessary
I was planning on using instructions from the set but now I will definitely be using this video to make some hopper cars for My Own Train! They look great and still has that 9v era look. Thanks!
putting batteries in trains was a huge fail by lego imo. i do hope that someone creates a digital system that's powered off the wall like 9V but, since it's digital, can handle several trains on one track etc, just like "normal" model train sets. seems like 12V was the best with the remotely controlled switches and since then it got worse. i love the 9V system and have a few trains of that time (including that grey metro liner one) but i'd love to replace the controllers and motors for digital controllers and motor modules with decoders and controllable outputs for lights etc. could also add roller modules that don't have a motor but take power from the tracks to control a crane or just the lights in a cart
Seems like FXBricks has that in mind. Their train motors have special features that would make them more friendly to adding a DCC system. That could be a ways off before they make them available. They are hoping for some time next year but these products have been in development for years
@@BatteryPoweredBricks yeah, ive already heard years ago that they wanna add motors and stuff but havent seen anything yet beside the tracks, so i have no idea if they even still work on it
They released a blog in June of this year that detailed plans for the electric components. They say the 9v connector is the single toughest component to make and has been retooled several times but is getting close. That has been holding back many of the other electrical items. I'm eagerly awaiting any updates but also not holding my breath it will be anytime soon
@BatteryPoweredBricks oooh, thats awesome. But what is the 9v connector? The pieces that connect to the rails? Or the 2x2 2/3rd brick that was used in the 90s for connecting things electrically?
They are doing both, the part that connects to the tracks has been final for ages now. If you want to see for yourself go to their website and click on blog at the top, It's the second one down. It's quite long and has some really exciting stuff they are working on
Seems like a great alt brick company, based kn what ive seen on your channel. Their products arent really my cup of tea, but i always appreciate the community having more brick options. And i fully recognize that the lego train and castle community is HUGE which BlueBrixx seems to adress nicely. Also some people seem to like StarTrek which is fine, I guess 😂
I've watched some Star Trek in recent years but not near enough to want sets or models 😅. If I had watched it as a kid I'm sure I'd be more into it. Even with Star Wars ships I'm just interested in the old sets from the original trilogy
Old 9 or 12v is best!
Nice one, I recently pieced toghter the hopper wagon that was a part of the 4564
This is a serene L.E.G.O. 3-D speedway. 이 제품은 고요한 레고 3D 스피드웨이입니다.
How about Canada.
Just from a quick test it looks like flat rate shipping to Canada is 40 Euro
Where have they hidden the sets? I've looked around their website before but assumed they only did track. That's all I could see.
Are you getting them mixed up with TrixBrix perhaps? I know there are a lot of Brix companies out there 😅
@@BatteryPoweredBricks DOH!!!! Yes. I was getting them mixed up with TrixBrix. Sigh. I bet I'm not the only one though.
TLDR: train bogies with more than 1 plate thick technic hole = illegal build technique. The reason why the train plates don't rotate as freely when the design uses two technic plates stacked up is because the technic pin has no room to expand like it is supposed to. So many people are designing it incorrectly and the technic hole needs to be one plate thick only nothing else. You can see this on Barduck truck designs because the bogies fall out because the pin is under constant compression and not allowed to return to normal size. The real issue is that Lego group should have made the pin long enough to work with two plate thick depths but didn't.
Lego used to make the bogie plate with a 7mm pin instead of the much more common 5mm. I don't have any but I assume the 7mm pin version would work with two plates. If I had to guess I think they went with the 5mm and single plate method so that there is some play for the bogie to pull away a bit like when going up an incline. Just a guess 🤷♂️
This was a very cool chat. Most of my experience with BlueBrixx has been with Star Trek sets. The models haven't been perfect, but I appreciated their depth of knowledge and dedication to the theme. Their German-language videos discussing the Star Trek sets show that they are really passionate about the theme and how they try to make the models look as good as possible, especially the large ones. I've only built 2 of the large models so far and they look great, although the build experience wasn't ideal as I often had to hold the partially built model with one hand while building with the other. The Star Trek Advent calendar is my favorite Advent calendar ever. I think they must have loved making it because it actually has 27 builds; it's like they couldn't bring themselves cut out 3 of the models! They have another Advent calendar that has 24 windows but each day you're just adding to a single model and that was a different experience I really enjoyed. I've recently ordered a bunch of Star Trek sets before they lose the license and a few others I'm going to try to make some videos on. I also ordered a Stargate set for my in-laws (they love the show and have a modest brick collection) and I'm curious to see how they like it.
Well THAT'S not something I expected!!!
I have some 4.5 v track somewhere and a motor and cars but no wires
2 questions: 1) Do you know any good softwares for making MOCs that are weak-device friendly? 2) Any places where I could buy in bulk lego pieces for MOCs? I'm new to making custom Lego builds. edit: for question 2, I meant online.
I've never heard of a mobile digital building app but I imagine if they don't have one they may be working on one. I purchase most of my parts from Bricklink, which is from private sellers around the world. I also buy from the Lego website but not nearly as often.
@@BatteryPoweredBricks Like, not mobile phone, but a software that is a bit more friendly to PCs that are one the less powerfull side. Still, thanks! Subbed.
I don’t know about the off-brand servos, but the Lego technic servos are safe to “stall” because they have some kind of built in safety.
I just don't understand why people get into Lego's so much. They are so spendy. When I was a kid, I had building brix (I don't know what brand just building brix). My friend had Legos which I thought was cooler looking. When I finely had some of my own money, I would look for Legos. But all I found was little individual building pieces. Like race cars, spaceships, from movies, animals like dinosaurs but no building set like they had years ago. plus, their prices were out of this world as far as I was concern. Now that I know of some knockoff companies out there maybe I'll look around some more.
There are certainly more options then ever nowadays. Third party companies are getting better and better while Lego's quality has been slipping, all while raising prices 🙄
Thank you Brian for taking the time to do this awesome video! I really appreciate it. I hope you had fun buying socks while controlling your train 🚂 😂.
I think there is a huge market that Lego themselves kinda neglect. BlueBrixx seems to be eager to fill that gap. For the longest time 3rd party companies didn’t have a very good reputation. It’s probably due to that Lego bricks are/were high quality and 40 year old bricks are almost flawlessly compatible with todays bricks. But, Lego has had more and more quality issues for the past years, and the quality for 3rd party bricks has gotten much better. Also BlueBrixx seems to be small enough where they are in much closer contact with the community. I’ve had my eyes on some sets for a while, but I think I’ll have to pull the trigger soon! Thanks for this interview!
Agreed. If nothing else good competition will keep Lego on their toes and force them to provide better value / quality. Or at least it should, Lego seems to be pretty blind to these issues
At this point id just buy a 3d printer
I get that comment a good bit, I just don't have an interest in learning to 3d print myself. I'm sure it takes a lot of research, time and effort to get good quality parts. I also like to support companies / individuals that are printing parts.
What should the highest output voltage be for a stock regulator? I measured it with no load at 6.8v which seems a little low to me. Shouldn't it be around 9v? The wall transformer is outputting 9v
It should be 9v output. If your input is DC it needs to be at least 11-12 volts because it will lose some through the bridge rectifier / regulator.
Aaaah... thanks! I saw the transformer wasn't Lego and it output 9v. I swapped it for a 12v, 2.5amp supply and my trains suddenly run much better! I'm getting 9.26v on the rails now without load
Great interview Brian, very interesting information. They sound like they are a good company and not just a cheap knock-off company.
Just the fact that they agreed to the interview says a lot to me. They seem to really take their business seriously and are willing to work with the community.
Ok so you convinced me to try it out. Always waffled on getting one of the Star Trek sets and now that the license is gone I think I’ll try them out. The prices are lower once I put them in my cart and switch to US. I guess it removes the VAT? So it makes the 35 euro shipping not that bad. I’ve bought so much stuff from Germany over the years that the 35 euro mark I’m kind of use to anyway
At the end of the day the shipping costs are really pretty reasonable, especially when placing large orders. Even for a single, decent sized set the value can still be good compared to other options.
The Star Trek sets aren't perfect, but I think they're worth the risk. I know Alex Nunes wasn't completely happy with his, and I completely agree with his reasoning because I experienced the same issues while building, but I really like the finished models. I'm still hopeful that another company will get the license, though.
Hi. I just bought my first Powered Up train so I'm just starting my Lego train journey. This was a very informative and fun tutorial to watch! Thank you for putting this together.
Are those new pieces a match for light bluish gray (instead of light gray), or are your Lego tracks just that yellowed?
Many of my official tracks are very yellowed, some aren't as bad. I wouldn't say that Paul's Printing 4DBrix track is a match for any color really. It's kind of between old and new gray?
On youtube search on "Aquazone monorail". There are a few very nice moc's to take inspiration from. Remember this though: - you are an automation guy and takes pride in Lego devices and connecting them: some of them can be featured (instead of hidden) in some central command station. - Aquazone takes place underwater: elevators and other "inside" stuff should be airlocked from the outside. I would think about the following: what activities can take place "outside" (which would be more realistic) like mining/processing and what activities should be inside? (like canteen, sleeping area, research lab, etc) - conveyor belts (with airlock) would be a nice addition since it is in the main set of the theme.
Really smart idea, so simple but so effective! Definitely going to use this!
Is it normal for the stop light to not iluminate when you conect power to it, i dont have a cable yet so i cant test it.
Edit Problem solved i had to swap the polarity of my dc plug, dont know why it would matter with an ac input
Yeah that is really strange, I have no idea how that's possible 🤷♂️
Suggestion for creating these adapters and or similar ones and so on. One option for having the splices and all enclosed and yet Lego compatible and not as messy and or stiff. Might be able to use one of the bricks from the middle of a power functions light or possibly even the powered up lights best would be to get one that's not working or otherwise that could be used as the middle section and have everything encased Within. Will probably be enough room for the width of the powered up cable and also power functions. Also suggestion to make adapters that take two 9-volt connectors I'm going to one powered functions connector to have power for the constant 9-volt power and also control lines. More than likely this was mentioned in another video but I have not watched all of the battery-powered bricks videos as of yet! Also with the right combinations of 9-volt parts and power functions others have also mentioned doing things using dual motors and the fact about reversing one of them. And of course we're usingAnd of course using the power functions train motors. And trying to shoe horn in a polarity switch can get quite awkward. And take up way too much room and make things just harder to need be. If you have the 9 volt components in enough of the power functions extensions give me a lot more compact then power functions polarity switch method You might have a bit of extra wire however probably easier to deal with than the bulk of the other method! I did sort of a redesign of a 4.5 volt sets locomotive can't remember the exact name of the set it was the one with the blue battery box with the door stickers on their. Had the yellow car and red locomotive I believe it was one of the cargo trains but can't remember the exact set the name door number. Built this locomotive to pay homage to it. But use the 9-volt train motor. Combination of power functions and 9- volt parts. Interior illumination all four headlamps illuminated with two sets of power functions LEDs. Note no rear lighting. However. Had a red flashing beacon on the locomotive courtesy of the 9-volt single vertical light brick. Into your cabin illumination provided by the right angle 9 volt lighting brick. Also the locomotive provided power for all the other cars for the lighting. Unfortunately you do not have enough of the shutters anymore for the original design however substituted the Grill profile bricks for this Walmart looking pretty good. Doors and such were from the original set although the stickers long gone as in rubbed away any details if it was still there even. Also one of the more interesting cars I built for the strange what is the Caboose. Again one power functions LED. And use of the Lego 9 volt fiber optic system lights to functions the flashing beacon on the roof of the Capriola on the Caboose and also a blinking light at the rear of the Caboose as well. In addition to lighting a desk lamp in the Caboose Cupid! There are two of the Lego fiber optic system Optical fibers going to to lights at the rear of the Caboose just in red. And also a similarly done sort of outdoor light above the fake rear door. Also to keep the light from shining through the red bricks which are actually the horseshoes for the Lego garage door tracks the one by two. The black capes to mask the light this worked pretty well and still kept things 100% Lego it's a good option to keep things from shining through in my opinion. By the way to rotation for the fiber optics light unit was provided by the Lego 9 volt micro motor. Frankly it's louder than the train motor or at least more noticeable! Needless to say something like this is difficult to do because of all the cables needed it's a bit complex when trying to decide all this into something to sort of Disguise all the electrical and the optical components but I was pretty pleased with the results The locomotive was the hardest part for maintaining the cable routing since shoehorning cables where you can and keeping them from sprawling everywhere hiding them as much as possible This will be for a future Christmas train! By the way there is one thing with sound on the train layout something else of Interest. In terms of sound no it's not at one of the sound breaks or anything Diesel horn being done mechanically geared up power functions motor and using a gear rack upside down and a bit of downward tension with a rubber band and yes beneficial rubber band. This is operated by a Lego build push button on the control box. Being used as a generator to alarm remote control of another power functions motor. And at the other end of this there is a semaphore signal that's illuminated by another Power functions LED. The building next to it where all the magic happens! The second light on the Lego Power functions LED. Illuminates part of the structure that is cordoned off to give the illusion of a hallway. And the outdoor light next to the door is also illuminated courtesy of a Lego fiber optic cable. The little hallway area is only by distilled light from the power functions LED. This building is also where the diesel horn mechanism is! And the what looks like a throttle is actually operating the symbol for motor the motor in the building for December 4 there's a linkage to a 9-volt polarity switch arrange in social media is to be an on-off switch only and is triggered when the symbol for is in the clear position and the light is green. And when going through yellow and to read is off interrupting power to the track note also building also acts as a junction box for everything else talk about complex but very rewarding and unexpected especially the mechanical diesel horn
I like the layout and would be sad to see it leave. Suggestion: take it to a convention, then decide what to do about it. Other suggestion: put THIS layout on a drop-table (like you see in kids’ classrooms), like it’s underneath the sea. Then you can build another layout above it. It’s an idea at least.
I doubt it will ever go to a convention. Brick Fan Expo didn't do very well here in my city and I'm not holding my breath for them to return. There are many other issues stopping me from setting up large displays at conventions but I may bring some modules for the GBC layout if Ethan McCain is there, he agreed to watch over them when I couldn't.
I really like the people-tank you built for the sharks to watch humans feed.
I would love this piece
If u could make it with the servo motor on the bottom it would make it much cleaner then u could hide the servo motor in a tall bush or trees
