Absolutely correct about the lines in headlights. They are for directing the light in incandescent lights. In fact, the old round and rectangular lights were different between countries that drive on the left or right side of the road.

Hello Deon, what a great informative chat, lets see if I can share a few ideas on your projects on the spring I think you could use white vinegar, ( there is a white cleaning vinegar but not much variation), citric a citric acid like lemon juice or soda drink like Coca Cola, ( Coke), I've even made an electrolysis process from a telephone charger but that's a lot of work for a spring. For paint striping that is always tricky because of type of paint, acrylic or enamel, Hope long its been on etc.Brake Fluid is the most available I've used a British product called Dettol the US version is Lysol 99.9% concentrate Majic Black tire cleaner. There is very good product from VMS, but they are in Poland and pricey, I use them in special or critical projects. Glad you found the bust character Churchill. It sounds like he may have been in the British Army Parachute Regiment at Market Garden, WW2 The RAF actually dropped what the soldiers thought was an ammunition pod, several soldiers were wounded trying to retrieve it, but it turn out to be full of Berets. The Regiment wore a red/maroon shade and the people in supply thought there were a lot of Berets lost in the jump and gliders On the lights a long story short. Most lens covers today are smooth because of LED lights which can be arranged to focus are brighter and use less power. In the old days it was all bulb technology. The patterns on the lens covers were used to retract the light as a focusing mechanism. Ironically in all my recent eye troubles , they have you look through a simple eye cover with holes. The holes help focus the light to improve your vision so they can compare the normal versus enhanced. For your IPA we have two solutions over the counter 70% and 91%. I'm still experimenting with dilution and materials to get a good viscosity GOR airbrushing. Tamiya is a good paint but for me seems to needs a lot of extra formulation.. Now to your outstanding B1 kit. Called the Lancet. Ironically it is not a nuclear bomber. It was originally but cancelled by President Carter, but brought back by President Reagan. The new B1 was designed to carry guided bomb ordinances ant would have been to expensive to modify the bomb bay, plus dropping nuclear bombast low level requires an entirely different strategy. The kit you have is in a 1980's camoflage, from that time period it has evolved through the green NATO schemes, to a gray free livery like the old British camo and today is just the standard gray livery you see on virtually all USAF aircraft. I'm tempted to see if I can find one, it would make a great build, but my stash is so big and Black Friday was amazing, still it would be difficult to resist . Apologize for such a long comment you have so much going on I'm envious of your variety of projects. A new subject, what does Santa Clause where for Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere ? It's going to be cold and rainy journey for him in the Pacific Northwest. Hope I helped a little, I always enjoy your multiple projects especially painting Cheers till the next chat, Bob

Thanks for the Tamiya motorcycle kit plastic hose tip Deon, I've just got through de-taping all 18 of my stash kits. All including brand new stock from Japan had the glue on the tape messing up the hose. The Tape with the white glue being the worst. I had forgotten that joy! Those lines and angles on the clear headlight parts are as you guess the prisms for directing the headlight beam on older bikes. Newer bikes had a more complex silver reflector and plain glass and now it's gone to LED lights. Batteries on the older bikes were generally clear or semi opaque white as I recall straight from Japan. The battery colour on the RS1000 Box looks like an artists smudge instead of painting the internal plates in detail.

Watch out for the front lights on the Tamiya Jagermeister Porsche, for some reason Tamiya have molded the lens with surround, now it's ok if you want to chrome that area but if you want to do the box livery some very careful masking is required.

Hello Deon, First for something different - I think I discovered Wheelie Yellow's brother - they seem to have the same interest in extreme speed, Hope this link works: ua-cam.com/users/shortscvYdTyPvdig?si=I7TX72rs3agjClyT Apologies for a late response. It seems I have encountered an unexpected "modeling injury". We always have some kind of pollen in the air year round. . A week ago my left eye was very irritated - like flying in your Harvard with flying goggles with one lens. I waited four days before going to the eye doctor. It was not pollen related but several scratches on my cornea. They are treating it for a week with special eye drops and I will go back at the end of this week for a progress report. So I haven't watched a lot of videos and can't build models because of the blurry vision from the drops. However, I really enjoyed this "chat" It reminded me I need to add a Canberra to my collection. It was a very effective medium bomber for the US in Vietnam, the primary caveat at that time was the "shotgun shell" starting technique. It created a lot of black smoke and the airfields were always being observed. I'll be following your figure painting progress as I have some 1/16 scale and a bust of Churchill in my stash. The bust you have looks familiar, before my eye I was investigating some kit possibilities. It could be an Australian team member that worked jointly with American LRRP units, , I thought maybe SAS but they don't use backpacks. I had even thought of the French Foreign Legion. Hopefully I will be healed and can restart my research. I looked at a model figure kit maker called Mitches Military Models in the UK - they have a few close to your bust. I am also getting more interested in your bike models especially those you shared in this video and the way you paint them. So a combination of cold rainy weather, a chaotic political transition period until Jan 20, my check engine light in my van came on and my eye - Modeling has been difficult to work in. It has let me think about a better build cycle and organize my stash priorities. I do hope all is better in your hemisphere. Happy Modelling and Cheers, Bob

Hi Bob. Hope your eye heals fast, just build a model anyway - no paint, and call it your blur build. Oh i seem to have resolved my ant problem, the antsand worked but i had to get it right close to the nest in the ceiling which wasnt easy but a stroke of luck - when i was brooming away cobwebs through the hatch, and putting half my body through, i managed to see the line of ants and layed a good bit of the sand. It looks like that did the trick. Weather is getting very hot here now. 30 degrees C. The motorbikes are quite a lot of work - more than most builds.

I have a Fujimi Monkey Bike that's similar in construction to the CB1300, also their Honda cub is the same. Only the racing bikes seem to be Tamiya/Hasegawa like. A note on blued exhausts if you're a perfectionist, the exhausts on the Japanese bikes I had were generally double skinned to avoid blueing, saves a bit of unnecessary detailing.

  • @Sarah-JaneR32
    @Sarah-JaneR32 14 днів тому

I am a race car and race bike builder so can only comment on that genre, but from my experience of Fujimi they are very varied in quality. the Pepsi Suzuki bike I built last year, it's very detailed, maybe too much, as it quickly gets fiddly I found, read the instructions as I noticed some parts weren't clear in their placement, will be interested in hearing your comments when you build it. I have the latest model by Beemax of their first bike model, I'm looking forward as to see how that builds up, I don't do social media stuff so can't send a pic or anything.

Hello Deon, you've definitely got a lot if projects going. Your work on the large scale figures is very helpful, I've got some Das Werk figures on my build list but have never done figures that large so I will be following your progress on those. I finally located a good source of Alclad products and will be able to obtain those soon. One of my distributors was having a moving sale, but while looking for some bargains, I waited to long to check out and what was in my cart had already sold at check out. Frustrating but I do have a big stash waiting for building. I'm always observing your ability to paint with different paints, my supply line is limited to Tamiya and Vallejo at a small RC Hobby shop. Looking foward to the next chat, Cheers Bob

Hey Deon, excellent video to highlight painting can really make a difference. Those motorcycles really offer a challenge and you've got the metal parts especially engine and frame looking very realistic.Looking at the Scout reminded me of building a very large cockpit. That black looks very smooth did you mix that? . I believe it was late 60's that the solid material under the hood, ( bonnet), was discontinued. Over time it had a tendency to gather a lot of dust that couldn't be cleaned and would sometimes drop down onto the engine. They transfered the material to behind the firewall to help with the noise. Of course our cars didn't switch from being like tanks with large amounts of metal until the 90's when the foreign competition introduced smaller vehicles with better gas mileage I must get more proficient on my airbrush. Lately I've been cheating on my small 1/72 fighter kits with rattle cans. The paint does go down nicely but its very limiting on mixing colors. I did get a 1/72 kit of a Vulcan bomber this week and its huge . It will definitely need airbrushing. Next week I've got 2 1/48 kits coming that will also require multi colored surfaces. I'll be anxious to see the motorcycle finished out. The political chaos is still prevalent in many ways and dominates our daily lives. They key is to make the transition which won't take place until 1/20/25. The population is feeling a little better, but our executive branch is in shambles and exacerbating European tension, the trick is going to be keeping Putin at bay until Trump can convince him to " relax", sorry about the digression from modeling. Cheers Bob

The Italeri Lancia is an old Protar kit from early 80's, I built it when it came out, but it didn't have the sink marks, so that might be a change of the plastic used. The Yamaha bikes are superb to build, I've done a few and really enjoy them.

Yeah, the sock puppet calmly, almost flatly musing about life, the universe and everything and then gunning it down the lane on the edge of control is strangely hilarious. What makes your life easier is that starting from scratch, you can make the body fit the chassis you have, and boxy vans look OK in quite a variety of proportions. That Tamiya chassis you have is what RC-people call a "buggy", i.e. a fast off-road car. This one must have come out in the early 80's, named the Frog, and later came the Subaru Brat and a Lancia Rallye based on the same chassis, both of which I found weird because the body was awkwardly perched on top. When you're thinking about a Ford GT 40 I wonder what kind of material and building technique you have in mind. So far my RC car custom body is an AEC Matador, and my upcoming projects are a Unimog 411 and a Citoren HY, all clearly of the type easily made from plywood. But I wouldn't know where to begin building something more rounded.

Hi. I remember some of these kits from when I was a kid. The one that struck me most was the Britten Norman Islander. I had this aircraft and remember building it. I also remember the box art of most of these kits. I was born in 1965 and started making models in the 1970's. I had lkads of them. I used to have them hanging from my bedroom ceiling. Your videos bring back some good memories. I still make models and it is my major hobby. I make small scale armour kits now and a lot of them are the old Airfix kits. The Matchbox 'Cheverolet ' kit that you showed is the only one that I don't have and I am on the lookout for it. The price of these kits nowadays is very high compared to when I first saw them all those years ago. Like you I don't know what happened to all those old models that I made. But I know that I do have some in a box in my storage. I would like to see what I have and maybe do a rebuild on them. I know that this will involve a large amount of scratchbuilding as like you I do like to superdetail my kits. Thankyou for the memories. Regards.

Hello Deon, Up in the Northern Hemisphere we still have a bit of time left before Sunday rolls in. I actually got some good building time in today which felt good. I hope to finish up some of my 1/72 kits and line up a few 1/48 kits next. I do like Spitfires and Mosquitoes but must admit transfering that grey green and brown green pattern is not easy on 1/72. I hope you got my comment on the ant problem - sometimes my tablet doesn't sync with my work station, (I can resend it not). I haven't seen a Wheelie Yellow in quite a while although subscribed I'll have to check and see if I missed one - I'm sure they take a long time to produce and edit. Over in the UK they had their big annual Telford Model Show - It looks like a large event and every kit you can think of was represented including Formula One and Motorcycles. On your motorcycle engine I do like the the way you finished out the engine with the "smoke" . I'm wondering how that would work on my B-58 chrome when I get that going. There is much learning and experimenting ahead. I have seen a modeler use a pink primer for red paint . Yellow and orange are difficult colors to match as well. With the wrong primer you can really impact the finished color. I haven't tried it yet, but I have seen a modeler use plastic spoons for testing colors. That is where I first saw the "smoke" type of paint. It looks like it saves a lot of paint mules. It's funny that most tools are universal in function but called by different names - like spanner for wrench and torch for flashlight. In the colonies we call that big file a "bastard" file. As a very young lad, I was helping my father in the garage file down some metal and as he asked me to hand him that bastard file out of his reach - my mother walked in and thought we were using bad language 😃 Always enjoy your Sunday chats, I learn a lot however, the best thing I try to do is have more patience and don't rush. Happy Modeling, Cheers Bob

Hello Deon, Still Friday up in the colonies, however we call it TGHF - first on your ant problem , we have an excellent ant killer TERRO Liquid Ant Baits - they are small clear liquid packets the ants love - they go inside the packet drink the liquid and take it back to the queen, in a few days the colony is destroyed. Our apartment is on a slab and in spring and summer the ants are looking for food and water, their nest are deep under the foundation. We get it at the big box store, Home Depot - however, there are many sizes that might work better for you - Amazon has a big listing. I copied the main link - and provided the main ingredient. Chemicals are of course variable internationally. The packets work well at the entry points. In larger containers I'm not sure of how to apply it, however it would be worth a test of a box of packets. The important part of placing the packets is to make sure Chicken can't get access. I hope that helps. Another brand with with the active ingredient , might work as well. www.terro.com/terro-liquid-ant-baits-t300 5.40% Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate (Borax) You certainly do know how to repair a broken part or improve a model , the undercarriage was excellent. I do like the versatility of your builds. Those motorcycles look so real. The first one with just the frame really enhances the model. I especially liked the "chrome" finish. I'm really anxious to get the materials and my build schedule back on track and starting work on the formula you worked up for me. The professional circuit for racing vehicles certainly has a lot of decals, another aera I need to improve in. The adrenaline and "angst" or resistance to our government change has been overwhelming and the transition from one political party to the new one will be taking place well into January when everything becomes official. America was in trouble, I had been worried that our lifestyle stability and future would change drastically. However I can calm down a little bit and get my focus back to modeling. My current challenge is to complete the camouflage scheme on the Spitfires, both the gray/green and brown/ green, The pattern is difficult for me to transfer on to 1 /72 scale. I watch the de Havilland Museum channel - their last video was on modeling by the Docents, there were three and each has a different style - you might enjoy taking a look. I was amazed at one of the chaps who builds 1/32 scale Mosquitos. Another doesn't spray he hand paints his 1/72 models Another informative chat, Have a great weekend - Happy Modeling and Cheers, Bob

Hey Deon, why don't you use Easy Off turbo gel drain cleaner to remove the chrome? It takes less than an hour usually. Some of the chrome comes off in seconds. You need a bit of NaOH rather than bleach. I've done several kits with it, including the old Airfix Bentley and the MPC Country Charger. The Airfix chrome came off in seconds, but the MPC chrome took a bit longer. Hasegawa chrome comes off in a few minutes. The only Tamiya one that I've built recently was the Morgan 4/4 which had beautiful chrome that I left on it and just touched up the sprue gates with a chrome pen.

@@deonjansen Hi Deon. If it's a drain cleaner it probably does have NaOH in it. Mine has sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in it as well, but more NaOH than hypo. I can definitely recommend the Easy Off stuff. I used to use straight NaOH that I had to mix in some water. It worked well but was a bit messy and the crystals turn into a solid lump eventually. The gel is much easier.

Hello Deon, Still Saturday up here, time is changing Sunday, "Spring forward Fall back" - however, Our biggest mountain - Mt. Rainier, is closed down due to snow as well and it's quite chilly rain - good modeling weather, a bit difficult on painting. I'm trying to finish up some 1/72 spitfires, a P40 and Me 109 so I can move up a little in scale for a bit. I'm trying to finish the Spitfires - one gray and two brown - and the camouflage patterns are a little difficult at that scale - I wish Ii had some Humbrol, they brush paint very well. Your are quite spectacular, I have never built 1/24 - they look quite detailed and the 1/32 do as well. I have some 1/16 German figures, one riding a horse - they are Das Werk kits and they are going to be quite a challenge at that scale. My nemesis scale for figures is 1/72. The Harvard really build out well with its unique aerodynamic features, I can see why you like them. I will be watching closely on your figures to see how you finish them. I really like the patina on a figure that size with oils, but that's a whole new skill set. My Me 109 1/72 is an Airfix, and the only detail in the cockpit is a seat, nothing else, even my P40 has some nice cockpit detail and its an Airfix as well. The Me109 I think is an older kit. Unfortunately, I have been a bit distracted, especially now, as the USA has been very chaotic politically. I've seen many party changes in my life but this "confrontation" of the parties is extremely bad - if one party wins, my life and the state of leadership and economy and global presence will be very bad. The world as alway ready taken advantage of our leadership - but I digress, I usually don't talk politics - but this change might even impact the cost of modeling, ✈🛩🚀. Thanks for another good weekend chat. My build schedule and skill set always benefit from your videos. Who knows, next time we chat I might have to call myself "Comrade", for now Happy Modeling and Cheers Bob

Yes its a huge thing coming up for USA, the biggest or most critical election in US History. I am following it and i know what you mean, everything you said. Lets hope you dont become a comrade, lol. Im busy on the Blackburn Skuas Undercarriage, remaking from brass, drilled holes, glued in, i think its all ok, only took me like 3 years to do the undercarriage on it - lol. Oh and chicken almost chewed through out internet cable, hadnt even noticed. but its still transmitting lol

@@deonjansen It's great to hear back from you, I was thinking of Chicken - it sounds like he has been a bad bird, they do love to to sharpen those beaks, you may have to get him a very large cuttlefish bone to work on, the plastic from and old Airfix kit would not do him well. Wish us luck, I will be voting and knocking on wood at the same time Tuesday..

Lol - glad you dont have to do another Guy fawkes. you can settle into some nice model building. I will do a video soo. i was doing touch ups on the undercarriage I added on the Blackburn Skua. Next to do the canopy frames on it as well, then paint another prop as the other one got into a small accident. lol

Hello Deon, nice variety of kits for Sunday Chat. I didn't realize the Shackleton was that big an aircraft. The Airfix B-24 was also a nice looking kit with " Davis Wing". Quite the difference compared to the B-17 wing . I remember the early AMT car model days. The kits were quite stout, using screws to put the chassis to the body, nice rolling wheels and good detailing . A small group of friends would get together collect soda bottles on weekends, recycle them to get money for kit and supplies, the kits were reasonably priced and we'd have a weekend build club. We even used thread to wire the big V8 engines. It seems Modeling has always been a part of my life. I've also tried those organizing boxes and usually go back to using the model box and bagging the extra parts. I would cut the sprues in straight pieces and use them for stir rods or stretch them out using heat for antennas . Ironically, display cases are the most expensive part of the hobby. I also rearranged my modeling room and have to get used to being organized, but it doesn't take much time during building to quickly get unorganized . We have what they call a Dollar Store, everything being a Dollar and I found some excellent plastic tubs , that are quite efficient for all paints and tools and even small kits and the stack very well. Thanks again for help on the polished metal application, I'm making a supply list and have included your recommendations Winter is coming soon which is going to help get more building time, painting will be a little more difficult so I'll have to work on a good drying space. Happy Modeling and Cheers Bob.

Deon, you might give the AK Xtreme Metal range a try. I've switched to them and am super happy with the results. The main thing with metallisers, I have discovered, is to give them PLENTY of curing time. I normally don't go anywhere near the paint job for at least three days (72 hrs) and find by then you can mask and decal with impunity.

Hello Deon, thank you so much for the answer to the techniques that will work on my B58, I'm very excited about the methods you recommended and will be ordering the supplies and plan on practicing on my " paint mules" to achieve the affects you shared. I've also wanted to try a passenger aircraft in the future and your American Airlines model was excellent. Both techniques will certainly provide an excellent metal finish on any era metal aircraft., but the Hustler model can really stand out now. Once again Thank You for sharing your knowledge on achieving a realistic metal finish Cheers Bob

Hello Deon, what a great fact filled modeling video.. I definitely liked your blue Buccaneer scheme, I wish more kits today had stands.. The F-11 was a successful aircraft in the late 1950's. It had an odd record of having shooting itself down in a supersonic dive after firing its machine gun. The Winnie Mae is indeed a beautiful aircraft . As you know set many records flown by Wylie Post . Amelia Earhart also had success in gaining experience There was actually a hatch in the top of the canopy to enter and exit to aircraft.. I took a quick look for you on other kits there are three 1/48 and one very interesting 1/72 with four versions of decals for Winnie Mae and Lady Lindy - she flew a solid red version. . 1/48 scale kits include an old Lindberg kit # 533:98, , AMT kit # T642, a Dora models , no kit model, Kit # 4100 ESCI I believe the 1/72 kit is by MPM Ironically I have the same Spirit of St Louis kit. It is actually one of the better kits available because of some good detail in the cockpit. The burnish look around the engine is obtained by using what is called a " perlee " technique, French for Pearl. It had a strengthening affect when blending two metals together, or just a nice finishing touch to the aluminum while showing which parts of an aircraft were metal, going back to WW1. The Spirit had a gold lacquer finish applied to seal the surface . Inside the spinner everyone who built it from Ryan, signed the inside, and ironically there was a Swastica. . The Perlee affect most likely induced some parasitic drag, which didn't seem to impact the energy at his speed. There is a new technique of modeling manufacturing that is quite interesting, at least one I have found. Making full clear plastic wings it fuselage. A kit I just acquired which I think you would really enjoy building is a 1/48 scale Horten 229, by SWS, It has very detailed, intricate interior showing wing spars and engines, and the wings aand parts if the fuselage are clear but with detail panels and rivets. I need to improve my skill set, especially painting to build this one. Back to the Winnie Mae and Spirit if St Louis, you have two historical parts of history the aircraft and the men who flew them. Apologies for the long comment, this video really drew me in many aspects that go along with modeling. Cheers Bob

Dora Wings does make a high quality 1/48 scale kit of the Lockheed Vega. It is quite nice and certainly no more difficult to assemble than other kits despite being produced as a "shorter run" kit. They also offer different versions of the aircraft.
