I find it so interesting how Chet always sells himself so short and says they probably only kept his ideas because they forgot to cut it,. Meanwhile the wikis, articles and fans always talk about how irreplaceable and influential Chet was for early VR development and outreach, how he was the leading figure in Valves VR department, how talented he was as a writer, how much he shaped Valves humor and zing, and when Chet got hired by Valve, even the legendary Marc Laidlaw said: "for years, Chet and Erik were legendary figures of mythic status to me. They still are, except now I can throw things over my shoulder and hit them."
The golden years of Valve. As much as I adore Half-Life 2 and consider it Valve's single greatest gaming achievement, those years between the episodes and Portal 2 were that team at the absolute top of their game.
Chet, we would love you to play Entropy : Zero 2 sometime and let us know what you think of it. You were going to test it at one point! :) And I loved the episodes btw. They did so much for me. So thank you!
Honestly Chet, if you started a podcast and spoke to different members of the industry every week for an hour I bet it would do very well. I love these story videos.
It still bothers me that I've been waiting, well, literally half of my life for Episode 3. But the doc made me realize that reality would have come at the cost of Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, and TF2's many updates. Valve in the late 2000s and early 2010s were putting out hit after hit after hit in fresh and interesting ways. And by the time all of those were done... well, they waited too long to do an episode 3. Still, at least we did get Half-Life Alyx; even though I still need to find a way to borrow a VR headset because with all due respect; I can't justify purchasing one at this time...
I just love to see behind the scenes so I'd have watched that tired development process, but the episode 3 video did scratch that itch. It's crazy, whatever the next half life is will be fundamentally different from what it could have been then, from the engine change to the expectations around it. Thinking about that genuinely promotes alt history levels of speculation lol.
This is more of an old industry thing to my understanding, when games were pressed and physically put into boxes to be shipped to people who purchased them, to stores, etc. it's just stuck
For clarification sake if there is any confusion here Episode 1 is not the first entry to the series. Of course HL1 is the first part of the series, but if you don't want old, the Black Mesa fan game... Though sort of optional... but if you do want to engage with the series, this is the start, it's up to you how much you want to play. Otherwise, Half-Life 2 is the game, HL2 Episode 1 is different and is the sequel to Half-Life 2. Episode 1 is not at all a valid start to the series. HL1/Black Mesa or Half-Life 2 are. Sorry for a ramble, I just know it is a thing where people can be confused if they are not familiar with the names.

(@ 7:09 ) I'm not surprised the Portal 1 battery puzzle had voice lines, but I never really considered that they'd have been anything other than Glados trying to get you to stop escaping the whole time. You wouldn't happen to recall any lines that you wrote for that sequence, would you?
@chetfaliszek Oh shucks, thats unfortunate. I meant no disrespect, I personally was just speaking from experience. Hope it wont be bothersome soon. Keep up these shorts, they're always excellent!

Great people tend to be humble enough to let others talk good about them.

Probably not all of those, but maybe one of those would've been worse or not released.
Wait what documentary is everyone talking about? Did a new one come out??? 😮
@@nyolls Yes, about Half-Life 2. It's on Valve's UA-cam channel.
Thanks for saving Versus :)
GENUINELY. Source Multiplayer has never been the same since
Love the kitty pictures in the background
Thanks for the vid. Appreciate the honest insights of your time with Valve.
lmao, I was just playing Episode 2. And yeah, Alyx did thank me. I love these games
We need L4D3 alot too.

I was wondering: why all Valve developers use the term "ship" instead of "release"?

Borealis reference, obviously. Half life 3 confirmed.
Everyones always going about the episodes but all i want to know is what the hell was going on behind the scenes with the Super 8 tie-in
Thanks for the vid!
Ship Portal 3 lol
Nobody can say 2020s isn’t a Half-Life decade, we just lost our stride(r) on the previous one
3:46 for all they know it *is* the end of the world
Chet Faliszek, Did you work a bit on episode 3 stuff? before it can canceled?
Nope. Was heads down on L4d.
I kind of didnt get the main point of the video - what was the detail you wanted to correct in the doc? Maybe I just didnt listen well enough.
chet, i hate to be that guy, but I've always been a believer that tf2 will get a final update one day. when do you think valve will have time for it?
Can't wait to start the Half-Life series! Just installed Half-Life 2: Episode One and am about to play it!

starting from episode 1 is actually crazy
@@lenship2 For most series, starting with episode one is the least crazy thing to do.

Nah it was first pass to test the idea/area.
Sidenote: You touch your forehead a lot, I think that may be partially causing a bit of a breakout. Only mentioning because of a, "what is that?".
