I love hearing all of these stories from your time at Valve, it's such a fascinating company. The bit about asking the engineers to try a versus match together was brilliant lol.
Wow it's incredible to hear that someone who is leading the project cares about what every team member thinks about the project. Our project directors couldn't care less about what team members think. They just rule that's it. Even if you are right and you have to redo the work multiple times, you would still not get heard. It's politics.
It's easy to look back at these anecdotes about integral parts of what made L4D interesting and think "Wow, they were so wrong. What were they thinking?!" But it must have been such a new risky territory to walk in. Multiplayer games usually have to be looked at like theme park queues with foam padding and curved edges on absolutely everything.
This is my favourite video of yours so far. Answers a lot of questions that I had in the back of my mind. I'm so glad Left 4 Dead turned out as amazingly as it did. A question I had is when does music come into projects usually?

Thank you so much for the landscape orientation.

Good stuff Chet. I always assumed it was like the High School culture people said it was, so good to hear the alternative.

How much veto power does Game Newell have?
Lol amazing typo, not correcting that one 😂
All the power I'd imagine lol
