Not a Green Thumb
Canada
Приєднався 30 кві 2020
Hi! My name is Sarah, I'm a young mom from Ontario, Canada learning to garden and sharing what I learn along the way. I started my first garden in 2017 and quickly became OBSESSED! I started my channel to track my garden progress and hopefully help other new gardeners learn more too. I have dreamt of having a real homestead since I was a little girl, but for now I will putter away at my garden and continue to learn as many skills as I can. Who knows... maybe one day this channel will be a "building our homestead" channel!?! I want to live more sustainably and to one day be as self-sufficient as possible. Follow me on my journey!

They decimated my poor cucumbers.
I found theyre easier to hand kill at night. Theyre usually slower and less aware.
What is the actual full recipe, you mention it briefly but it doesn't sound right to do a 1 to 1 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water? for 1 cup of rubbing alcohol, how many cups or litres of water is needed? thank you :)
I’m 73 she’s 12 Ya follow? 👎
Your cute
I'm dealing with these @ssholes right now. Uggggg. Going back to check them again and I'll be back to watch the rest. Great video! Did you have further problems after this? Darn right, I've have a few spawns of Satan this year.
The only thing that worked for me is spray liquid sevin at dusk when the pollenators are in bed.
They are the spawn of satin. They spread so much disease in my garden last year and I lost so many plants.
Interesting!!! The ants may have killed them!
Hi Sarah, we recently discovered your channel and have been watching your video's. You're so engaging and such a joy to listen to and watch. We notice you haven't posted anything for two years. We do hope you will start posting again.
this was recorded so low on volume i couldn't
You sound like having no energy. So, pls stop doing video like this.
They do lay them in the flowers the eggs. Just to let you know that information. But if you use some diatomaceous earth that will also get onto the eggs and hopefully kill them. But that's why you have to be very vigilant every year and go through the yard or go through your soil every year and make sure you get some thing that can kill any of the Dangerous insects. Diatomaceous earth, Nimoy oil, Murphy's oil that you used, stuff like that. I just wanna make sure that I use some thing that is also not going to harm the beneficial insects like lady beetles, butterflies, dragonflies, bumblebees, honeybees, all of those things
I am starting to sprinkle diatomaceous earth in the flowers and on the leaves. It sucks to do that because the good insects also get injured in there. But not very many. Versus all the cucumber beetles. I also drowned them when I see them, I will have a cup of water or some thing that is like a bug killer or whatever, and I will see them and I will put them in the water to kill them . This year I am finding that they absolutely love my pumpkin flowers. Heck to the no you're stupid insects
You are on the right path, but instead of Murphy's, try some Castillo liquid soap or a natural dish soap mixed with cold pressed Neem Oil. The soap is your leaf glue and the Neem oil renders the infertile and dries them up internally. Spray 2Tbs of Neem and 1tsp soap per gallon in your sprayer. Top and bottom of leaves every 5-7 days til you are happy. This also kills the white flies on the rest of your plants. Do this after the bees have called it a day. It will kill the pollinators if they are subject to wet flowers. You can actually spray the night before harvest. Not a problem, just wash your veggies, since Neem oil comes from a Neem tree....all natural, not manufactured. * It must be cold pressed Neem, not the stuff from the big box store. You can order it on line, or Amazon.
I m a rookie at 62, Lol . Doing research, checking plants. Squash ( zucchini, acorn , butternut, summer) I was a late getting started, got out for the wild turkey in Virginia.April, to knee replacement in early May. Few other family issues, all I can say is through everything alot of chairs. I picked up the seedling from down the street. Couldn't find a few thing then I had saved some 2 years ago for acorn and butternut ,planted seeds an wella. Started of checking plant for pests early, I killed a vine bore bug, 2 of the squash bugs, and roughly 5 of the cucumber beetles. Now I hadn t run across the cucumber beetle I just saw them and the sixth sense said they can t be good. I killed another squash bug today. I know, long story short I barrier all the root systems with dirt, all squash, Mellon cucumbers, etc then put coffee grounds on base of plants on the mound of dirt. I haven t had Any issues with any of the squash., the cucumbers and melons I was a little beside on and did the same to them. Knock on wood. I found a cluster of eggs on one of my cucumbers today. They have coffee grounds on the soon till then have to check them. I can honestly Say I never knew gardening is very involved, I planted it to save money and for my finances mother with be 91 soon, and she's coming home from rehab tomorrow she ll be quite excited. The garden is her thing has been all her life so, have everything primarily caught up , for her welcome home. Sorry for the BOOK, got caught in the moment , doing ,listening, seeing the tricks of the trade. I always thought you plant the seeds , water and fertilize, and control weeds. All I can say is Wow. So many people on the net is endlessly overwhelming. Lol
Video sucks
If you see ants on your plants, check for aphids!!
I always thought aphids were the spawn if satan! I know that if you see ants on your plants you most likely have aphids. They eat their sugary 💩. It's pretty crazy that they use them for a sweet food source, even taking the aphids underground to eat the roots . The ants 🐜 will "milk" the aphids for their 💩.
Remember to get the bottom of the leaves, murphy's is great but it doesn't kill them if it doesn't coat them directly!
Beetlejuice striped suit
Keep a lot of 🦎lizard they are employees in the garden 😅
If we know that they have already laid eggs in the soil because I only learned from a comment here that they lay their eggs inside the wilted flowers, what do you suggest I do to get rid of the larvae so they don't return next Spring? Thanks.
Perhaps soil solarization?
Gardening in cooler weather but having the soil still warm 🌼🌞
Very nice 👌
I like to take a bowl of soapy water and put it under the blossom and they drop right in when I scare them.
i saw them c bettles having 3some in my cucumber plants. didnt let them finished their business, i killed them with my fingers. ill try the sticky traps and neem oil spray
Please consider the effects on the environment when using chemicals. Cucumber beetles are easy to pick off early in the morning when they are sluggish. They like to hide in flowers and leaf bracts. Use long thin tweezers and grab them and put them in some soapy water. 10 minutes will get you dozens! Spraying with soap is only effective if the animal is directly hit with the soap, and the residue is not good for soil health. Using sticky traps works, but also traps your beneficial insects.
You are gorgeous I love you eyes, thanks for the help
I love the changing of the leaves, the holidays and the times I get to spend with my family and friends
Spawn of Satan is such an accurate description for these pests. Thank you for the very informative video.
Watched this too late. Plants succumbed to bacterial wilt disease in its adult stage. Glad I got one of each variety of cukes before I sadly watch my beautiful vines wither
me too 😞
I've heard if castle soap but not Murphy's oil soap 😲😂🤗👍
Excellent content. I've actually watched a few videos you've got a lot of content. So how did it work for you? Good soaking the ground control the reproduction? Did it help? Because I'm totally being inundated. And I've got a neighbor with Beehives that I absolutely adore. I've been using neem oil after 9 p.m. doesn't seem to be helping much. Interested as to how well it worked for you. Thank you again
I wish I could give you a true update! We unfortunately had to move last winter unexpectedly to a place that I can’t have a garden :( hence the lack of content this year! I did find that the population did get less and less as the year went on, which some things I read said there can be a second wave in the fall. I found the neem was fine but felt the Murphy oil soap was better. I usually mixed them together. Best of luck to you!!
I've actually observed that they lay eggs in the flowers and when the flowers drop off the plants the eggs will hatch and the larvae will eat the rest of the bloom then eat away at the roots and base of your plants. So make sure to pick up the dead blossoms off the ground.
Thank you! I had no idea I have been dropping the Dead flowers on the ground myself😖
So interesting! I never noticed that! Everything I read said they laid them in the ground but now I will be sure to take care of dead flowers!!
@@notagreenthumb4775 I've never read about before either... I figured it out last year when I had a lemon cucumber growing in a large container and it was heavily attacked by them. What made me start to wonder was that I would pick up the dead blossoms and find two adults on top of each other inside of it. I then started to check the flowers and found a few with tiny little white worms (larvae) I also found that I could bate the larvae out of the soil with a under pollinated cucumber and then throw them out. Now I look back and wonder if I could've injected it with BT. Hopefully I'll never have to.
Thank you for this tip!!!
Thank you dear! However, it seems the murphy oil doesnt work very well from your video?
I actually found it worked really well, especially when I was using it regularly :)
I couldn't sleep last night because of these beetles. I will give the Murphy's Oil a try tonight. Also, hand squishing them is satisfying.
Thank you for your video. I first noticed these beetles just a few days ago and of course looked them up on line right away. I’ve been killing approximately a dozen or so a day and will consider putting out yellow bowls of oil soap. I’ve also put out yellow stickums to see what will happen. Good luck with yours and remember you are not alone in this battle. Carol from Quebec
The stickums got too many good bugs so I’m now using my dust buster. Works like a charm. I empty it after each use into a plastic bag and I make sure they are all dead. Every day there are less of these pesty pests!
What is a dust buster ?
Wow thanks so much!! I learned a lot. And now I'm more terrified of these nasty things ewww
I been using a mic of peppermint oil and neem oil . and seems to work until it rains i m gonna use the oil too see if that helps
Hi! I know exactly how you feel. My garden is the same size as yours. Last year my cucumbers were decimated by beetles and something ate every one of my kale plants. Don't get me started on the groundhogs and squirrels. I felt like giving up but figured I'd try again this year. Wishing us both better outcomes this year.
Miss you!! Hope all is ok.
Hey girl!! Yes I’m okay 😂 I know I totally vanished on the internet. It’s been a whirlwind! The original reason was my computer was broken so I was just waiting to get it fixed but it just never happened. Since then I’ve started a new job and moved to a place that I sadly can’t have a garden at 😭😭 I’m hoping I’ll be able to come back to UA-cam eventually because I had so much fun but not this year 😭
LOL you sound like me and my honey bees.. A girl and her cows sent us over to check your channel out. Really enjoyed your video so we subscribed.
Hi Sarah. Just joined your channel to see what you got for gardening (found you from A Girl and Her Cow) and to help you grow your channel. I do a raised planter too but it is winter now, so nothing is growing at the moment. I also follow other Canadians and UK too! Have a great weekend.
Thanks for following me!! Sorry I haven’t posted new content for you to watch in a while. My computer has been messed up and I haven’t been able to get it fixed. But as soon as I’m able I have more coming!

Love that! Sorry I don’t have any new content right now! My computer broke before Christmas and I haven’t been able to fix it yet. As soon as I have working technology again I will be uploading regularly!
