Here in the U.K. I grow Japanese overwintering onions outside.....they are fine and produce great crops of big onions.......but they must be the right onions and, it depends of course on your climate ....we have a very mild climate in this south east part of U.K. Re the carrots, one way of starting them and transplanting without disturbing the root is to sow them in compost in a length of plastic guttering.....then, did a trench when ready to be transplanted.....slide the whole lot out of the guttering and into the trench then water in and gently firm down. I’ve done it with peas but it does work woith carrots I understand!

Guess what I was doing this morning when I came back from school? I was looking for cabbage moth caterpillars . found three yesterday found three today killed three yesterday killed three today!
