Don't Try to be a Faster Rider - "You're slow because of fear!"
Today I’m going to talk about why you shouldn’t try to be a faster dirt bike rider, and what you should do instead! Anybody can twist the throttle on a dirt bike and go as fast as it will take you.
I’ll admit it… that IS extremely easy and that takes very little skill to do.
But if you ride with people who are actually fast dirt bike riders, you’ll quickly see that there’s much more to it than just going physically fast on the dirt bike. Truly fast (and good) dirt bike riders make obstacles look effortless. It seems as though they’re just gliding over the terrain like they’re levitating. But really, they’re hauling some serious a**.
I’m not even anywhere close to the ability of the top dirt bike racers at your local harescramble, enduro or motocross race. I have had the opportunity to ride with people like that though, so I’d like to share what I’ve observed…

In this video I’ll be answering all those questions as I give my first impres...

Why I Chose the CRF250F Over the DRZ400SM | My New Honda Trail Bike! [2024]
I'm 6ft and 220 pounds I don't have any trouble at all with my crf250F or any complaints with the suspension or power it does fine over logs,v-ditches,rocks roots, hills and even if I accidentally put it in the wrong gear,I make less mistakes because it doesn't try to get away from me so I'm able to keep a steady pace on mine therefore my lap times are usually pretty good in tight trails
That's all I need to see. I'm getting a 250f. Thank you! Got yourself a new sub.
A good open-minded attitude towards improving your riding is key to having fun and getting better at what you want to achieve. Whiskey throttle riders learn the hard way.
5,9 14 year old beginner rider, would probably just ride it on some trails near my home, wondering if it would be a good first bike for me.
Forget the haters and the critics. Make your one way. I absolutely love the dirt motorcycle community. There is really something special there. Howevwr like any big group, there are some clowns. Your content is aolid, keep it up!

All good points. I ride to have fun and ride with faster riders than me, but they never put me down for being slower than they are.
That's exactly how it should be! Glad to hear you have a group of good people like that to ride with
Great video! Also, just trying to always go fast takes the fun out of it sometimes. Do what you want to do and have fun, don't worry about the stop watch
So true! glad you liked the video!
I know the problem to well,I've got a 1990 xr200r I've been restoring on and off for the last 3 years ,when I got it all together I found out it had the kickstarter gear stripped out and I've got to pull the motor and split the lower cases to fix it and still not looking forward to that job
i'd love to get an old xr like that. such awesome bikes! best of luck with yours
Your initial story about how you were so excited for your new YZ125 just to get shit on by the other kid is like.... What's so wrong with almost EVERY hobby. You have the people that instead of wanting to share the experience of enjoying the hobby with you, they would rather gloat about how much better they are than you at said hobby. Then eventually no one wants to part-take in the hobby anymore as the elitist snobs make you feel like an idiot for either not knowing something, or not OWNING a specific something. I feel dirtbikes have fallen way far from where they were in the past because of brand loyalists like KTM. Which is funny because most Husky owners are super chill and down to earth, it's just primarily the KTM crowd that just HAVE to shove their shit into your face about how their bike is .7 seconds faster than yours around a track. Also yes I know each brand has their own snobs like Honda fans bragging about how their bikes may not be the fastest but will 'never break down', or how Kawasaki fans gloat about how Kawasaki is the only brand making strides for the average person to be able to afford a quality bike, Yamaha is a mix of reliability while also 'out performing Honda', and Suzuki brags about..... Uh... Nothing, they've pretty much given up on dirtbikes hahaha. Also the UNIVERSAL HATE towards Chinese brands PISSES ME OFF to no end, I love how the majority of people don't realize HALF THEIR BIKE IS MADE IN CHINA.... Brakes, Piston, Wheels/Tires, Spokes, Fork/Shock components, ect.. Even KTM HEAVILY relies on Chinese parts. So when a Chinese brand tries to break into the market which IN THEORY would shake up the market and get the sleeping 3 to stop sitting on their hands, EVERYONE SHITS ON THEM.. Kove bikes look AMAZING for the value proposition they provide, yeah their a little heavier and a little slower, but their 1/3rd cheaper. People need to grow up and get over themselves, politics aside.. A fully Chinese bike shows just how cheap a QUALITY bike CAN be made, showing how the Japanese producers and dealers in the US have been RIPPING consumers for the last 10 years, updating graphics and saying it's a 'new' bike.... Also the complete abandonment of 2-stroke bikes is so depressing, could you imagine how the motorcross scene would be if smokers never died off? 2 strokes are easier to work on, cheaper parts though need replacing more often, have nearly 1.7x the hp and power of a similar displacement 4 stroke, sound AMAZING, and are TYPICALLY cheaper than a 4 stroke of the same displacement. That is one thing I will give Husky/KTM/GasGas is that they REFUSE to give up on developing the 2-stroke platform, Yamaha is just rehashing their 2 strokes from 2012 with new plastics, same thing with Kawasaki but at least they offer a factory BBK on the KX85 in the form of the KX112. My dream bike would be a mid-sized bike like the KX112 with a 150-250cc 2 stroke motor in it but to get that would require thousands of dollars in modifications on an already 5,600 dollar bike, no thanks :/ A bike from Chine that has come on my radar recently is the XPro Storm 150, I'm REALLY interested in it, but the ONLY issue I have is the suspension, there is NO aftermarket for it so I'd have to swap the forks and the shock completely from another bike, maybe a TC85 or something. But with that mid-range bike size, the engine platform can take a "Daytona V4 190" race motor that can be BBKed to a 212, and is street legal if you ask for a motorcycle title instead of a MCO from the seller XPro. Really interesting stuff coming out of China, it's like an offroad modded Grom but a bit bigger and a TON cheaper.
I'm with you on the whole brand loyalist thing. Anyone who talks like that is usually really misguided. As you stated, each brand has its pros and cons. I feel like as long as you have a bike and you're riding it that's all that counts if you want to participate in the hobby. Bikes will come and go. You can always modify, trade or sell bikes and get a different one down the road. As for the chinese bikes I'm with you. I've gotten the chance to ride the surron light bee x and the ultra bee and I'm really impressed with them. Super exciting to see the new technology coming out and developing. As well as the Kove bikes too! don't have any experience with them but it's certainly a breath of fresh air seeing some different options. As for the KTM two strokes thing, that is super cool as well to see development happening on that front also. My take on the Yamaha thing is that even though they aren't developing the two strokes like KTM is, at least they do offer a much lower price point for those who still want to ride two strokes. Thanks for the comment!
Awesome video!! Just got my first bike a few days ago a old ttr-125, it’s basically a pit bike and all my friends ride 250s, definitely need to work on the “smooth is fast” mentality!!
Nice! The biggest thing on smaller bikes like that is keeping your momentum up. More seat time will get you more comfortable on the bike over many different obstacles and terrains which will allow you to carry more momentum as you progress! Have fun out there!
Another excellent video. Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I refuse to be friends with guys like that. “You drive a Chevy? What are you gay?” type of guys. The everything I like is cool and everything you like is lame kind of guy. These people absolutely have no idea what they are talking about. Never matured past 13
Couldn't have said it better myself man. It's so true though. All ego, absolutely zero critical thinking. Honestly takes all the fun out of hobbies too. I'm sure it's hard for them to even enjoy the sport because they're too busy worrying about what other people think about them (even though they'd never admit it) and just trying to posture that they're more manly or something lol
Covered it well bud and don’t take the BS to heart. Keep doing your thing. My response would have been, “Thanks for you input, it would be great if you could share some content online tips & tricks to assist my progression as a rider”. Thanks Keep having fun. 👍🏻
Appreciate it! that's a solid way to handle the bs comments. I'll have to use that one cheers!
Smooth is fast, that is 100% correct. I like your video's !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
man i need those trails that your riding at! were are they located?
Private trails at my buddy's place! they're kick ass We're in western PA area
@@notsoupmoto that's sick!
@@quinn3722 yeah man he's actually planning to expand them into a 12 mile loop so I'm super excited to get some footage of that!
Lots of macho riders ride dangerously fast, for me riding is about fun, it aint fun to get hurt. 54yrs dirt rider here and still ride hard trail regularly and out running younger riders is fun but not necessary to enjoy my sport! Experience has its benefits!
couldn't agree more! ego gets involved in sports like this far too often and causes people to take unnecessary risks. Props to you for prioritizing enjoyment! cheers!
Smooth is fast. I like that. Been trying to use line choice to help me go "faster". Like when you use a little bump on the edge of the trail to jump over another obstacle and it helps you keep momentum. My big problem was slowing down too much for difficult sections then having to accelerate again.
Exactly! I love little side hits on trails like that. I'm the same way with off camber sections right now. I think as you learn how to tackle the difficult sections and get more experience on them, you'll be able to carry more momentum through them in the future. Thanks for the comment!
It’s a race 😂f that
Yeah just send it man
Let the fast guys by and follow their lead. Its how you learn the fast lines and flow. Aint no point in holding someone up thats not racing you.
@@NorthEastDirt exactly
If it's a different class I get it, but if they're block passing you when we ain't even racing each other in the same class nah they can work for it 😅
I mean that’s fine as long as you’re holding your own line and not making it dangerous for them. If they’re not carrying enough speed to get around you then go for it and battle them a bit. I just think it’s kind of stupid to hold someone up who’s way faster than you. It’s just gonna tire you out, make it dangerous for them if you’re swerving around trying to block them, and like someone else said, you can let them by and then follow their lines and you may actually learn something. I get what you’re saying tho Also fyi this video was catered to beginners racing their first race
@notsoupmoto I 100% agree tho. My comment was more click bait lol I actually stay in my own line if they're is some from a different class behind me that's passing. I too always make myself known or tell the person left or right side just so they ain't freaked out lol then I say thank you 🤣
@@EclipseRacingLLC hey thanks because it boosts engagement haha But yeah I'm the same way. Love a good thank you on the way by lol
@@notsoupmoto for sure! Maybe I should go back through my racing videos and make a compilation of thank yous 🤣
@@EclipseRacingLLC that would actually be hilarious lmao
Yeah that’s not racing. Never let anyone try to get around you or pass you- get better and faster and find away around people. If I’m bad at a sport or activity it’s not my job to cater to your needs, your a pro, “a class”, therefor you should be able to go around people safely. Not a good take whatsoever. GO WORK HARDER!
@@DirtBikeDocs u guys are wild😂
@@notsoupmoto hey man I’m just being honest.. it sounds like you’re saying the inexperienced rider should stay inexperienced, and let the experienced riders have all the fun.
@@DirtBikeDocs not really. I’m saying the inexperienced rider shouldn’t cut back and forth across the track with no situational awareness like they often do and make a dangerous situation for faster riders trying to get past. Just saying they should move over so faster riders can get by safely. This is the exact reason they have the blue flag for lappers in motocross
Yeah you never raced in your life buddy
EXC is the KTM's enduro line, I'm not sure what is the difference between XC-W and EXC though - maybe homologation...? (Yes, enduro bikes are raced bikes but as parts of the race may be done on public roads, they are generally asked to be homologated.) Also, many of the more experienced riders I know say it's easier to ride motocross on an enduro bike rather than vice versa. In general, both are race bikes but enduro is tuned (engine, clutch, gearbox, suspension etc.) as a compromise between fast and slow parts, while MX towards the fast parts. Meaning enduro may not handle those big jumps or fast speeds on bumpy track that well, while MX is going to struggle on obstacles or when you need precise control, slip the clutch a lot in low RPMs etc. PS: Most brands that produce two strokes switched to FI (KTM, Husqvarna, Gasgas, Rieju, TM) and Beta has a mixer even though it uses a carb, so with most modern two strokes you actually don't have to mix fuel and oil, just make sure your oil tank is filled regularly.
Thanks for all the info!
I would definitely have to try it before i would buy. I've only raced and ride gas bikes
@@Allthingsfun1221 yeah it’s definitely a big difference but quite fun
B.S. !!!. YOU NEVER LET ANYONE PASS YOU. MAKE THEM WORK FOR IT. THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED RACING. YOU MUST BE ONE OF THEM THAT WANT A PARTICIPATION TROPHY WINNER'S. CARRY A BROOM STICK. IF THEY TRY PASSING . STICK IT IN THE FRONT SPOKE'S. THEN HAVE A FEW SHORT ROPE'S TO TIE ACROSS THE TRAIL IN DIFFERENT PLACE'S. YOU WILL WIN THE RACE.
Right 😂
DAMN RIGHT!! SAID EVERYTHING I WAS GOING TO SAY!! 🤘🤜🤛
Best method! 🤘🏼

I like my 2023 crf250F alot but agreed lights, adjustable suspension and a backup kickstarter would've been nice,I've already put a light kit on mine since I ride around my property alot in the evenings after dark
Which light did you end up putting on?
@notsoupmoto I used the led tusk underfender taillight and a baja designs led d/c squadron sport headlight along with a cheap led light bar kit from eBay and wired them all on the same on/off switch that came with the lightbar kit, plenty of light for riding trails at night and been working great
was the wiring easy? that's something i'm not too familiar with
@@notsoupmoto yeah pretty simple
@@notsoupmoto just wired the switch to the battery then wired the lights to the switch, use low watt led lights and an inline fuse close to the positive post and you won't have any issues, this is not the way to wire it for street legal use but fine if not intending to plate the bike, you can also get by without the light bar but it just makes it brighter plus came with the switch I needed

Im torn. Im looking at the 250rx and the 250f. Im 20 and light lol. (120) Im not new to bikes, ive been on them since i was little. However I have never raced. Only just riding in fields/trail riding with family/friends. ive ridden big bikes and I can handle them, Ive just never owned one. Ive grown up on my dads old bike that ive kept alive, a 1983 xl185s xD even the new 125s blow it out of the water. This coming up summer i am wanting to get into hare scrambles casually, nothing serious, just want to try out racing. I know the 250f would be perfect for trail riding and putting around the yard, but my fear is that it wont be up to hares. on the other hand, i know the rx would do them just fine, but how are they on casual trail rides? PLEASE HELP xD
If you just want to casually try out harescramble racing, you can definitely do it on the crf250f. I raced mine in open C class and got 6th out of 45 riders. Check out that video here: ua-cam.com/video/1QTk-pjD8s4/v-deo.html As far as how the RX does on casual trails, I’m sure it would be fine but I’ve never ridden one. The 250f is going to be better for putting around than the RX but if you can handle the bigger bikes power then I don’t see the RX as a problem. In your case, since you have quite a bit of riding experience, I’d say either one wouldn’t be a bad choice. If you get more serious into harescrambles, the 250rx is going to be better in the long run.
I dont race sadly, but maybe one day I'll race vmx on my 87 kx125, as its an indestructible beast
Vintage races are so fun! Have you ever been to vintage motorcycle days at mid Ohio?
I've watched a gangload of great videos about this machine, this one is the best. This is how I want to see a bike tested. I really appreciate that you took it on different terrain, from trails and not so trails to the track. Please continue with this format, you will get a lot of subscribers. Guar-an-teed.
Appreciate that! Thanks for the great feedback
You're not a b class guy. Just enjoy the c class for a bit. The b class guys vould start last and would pass most of those guys in the first 200 yds. The rest of them before the first mile. Just keep practicing and enjoy. Getting a better start helps a ton.
I mean I started 3 rows behind B class and ended up finishing ahead of at least 6 B class guys so idk man
My best friend who was an A level rider finished 16th overall out of 800 at riders on completley stock 1986 Honda XR200r at 100 mile desert race which was insane and 98% the rider!😳👍🏁
That’s awesome! Love those old XR’s
Cool vid. I have a 24 crf250f, love the bike. And I'm 6'9"tall 250lbs. And it lugs me up hills just fine. Upgraded the suspension on it. But super fun trails bike. I'm surprised you said it's heavy tho....?
Yeah it's definitely a heavy bike. For a 3/4 size bike it weighs 265 lbs. compare that to a full sized crf450r at 245 lbs. That being said, the weight isn't an issue while riding necessarily. Mainly when picking it up after dropping it or if you're trying to push it over the top of a hill climb for example. Just certain scenarios where having a lighter bike would be a huge benefit. That's wild though 6'9" on a 3/4 sized bike. Did you upgrade anything other than the suspension? My cousin rode it and is 6'4" and he says its fine but he does feel cramped a bit on it. Super fun trail bike though and very adequate for most situations.
I always wonder WTF are these guys wearing suitcases on their backs also you are passing guys on bikes that cost 4 and 5 k more : )
@@noellumex7555 haha yeah this specific race was called the “pumpkin run” so you could carry a pumpkin around for a lap in a backpack and afterwards you’d get a prize
Starks have come down to 11k OTD now. I follow a ton of e-bike channels and went fully down the rabbit hole on them. Still have not totally felt like pulling the trigger on one yet. They come out with a new e bike e dirtbike so often now it’s crazy. Anyways, would you trade the Crf250f for an ultra bee??
That’s great to hear about the starks. I’d love to try one of those out! And yeah I’m super excited to see where ebike technology progresses. It’s moving so fast already which is awesome. As far as trading the crf for the ultra bee… I’d say at this point, no. Although I think they are pretty interchangeable in the way of being able to tackle similar terrain (the ultra bee, being able to tackle a bit more tbh plus being wayyy lighter) I just think the crf fits more closely what I bought it for and I’ve been having a ton of fun on it so I’m content. If I had the extra money however I would totally get an ultra bee
Love my ultra bee, buying a set of supermotos soon 😊
I heard parts availability is horrible. Any truth to this?.
I’m unsure but I’ll ask around and get back to you
I bought a 2023 crf250F and I love it,it's easy to fling around in trails and the e-start is nice since my right knee is shot, has just enough power to climb hills fine, you ride it it doesn't ride you, getting ready to buy a 2025 model for my son now
Totally agree!
Good review. I'm mixed on electric bikes. Kind of cool but I still like the exhaust note and being able to gas and go.
Yeah it’s definitely super wacky not hearing the engine but I got used to it pretty quick. They’re so cool tho I’m excited to see where technology takes them
very well done!!!
Thank you!
Been tossing around whether I want to get one as a single track ripper or wait another year or two. Once you add in the 18/21 rims and tires, new suspension, and a new battery, it's over $12K. The Electric Motion Escape looks bangin too, but the dealers are limited. The significant lack of maintenance is the main draw for me. A local place has a freeride to rent, may try out that first.
The free ride would be super cool to try out! Honestly the stock battery on the ultra bee can get you a long way so I’d prob just go for the tires to start. Even the suspension is adequate but down the line it’s something you’d wanna upgrade for sure
