Cape York | Crossing the Jardine | Absolute Beach Front Camping | Alau Beach
In this episode, we pack up from our cozy free camp at Fruit Bat Falls and head towards the Jardine River Crossing, the iconic gateway to the tip! After crossing the Jardine River, we had an extra night before our booking at Punsand Bay, so we decided to check out Alau Campgrounds. What a great idea that was! Alau Campgrounds is an epic little spot, and being so early in the season, we had the place mostly to ourselves. It offers absolute beachfront camping with tropical island views to die for. In hindsight, we would have stayed longer, but we packed up the next day and made the final journey out to Punsand Bay Campground.

Your videos continue to be a fantastic take on doing The Cape - much more our laid back style of doing things. The Alau Beach Campground looks absolutely stunning, and based on your comments I think somewhere we'd want to spend a few days. The contrast between rainforest and the open sea is definitely marked! Given the investment in a 'trip to the tip' I don't think too many would complain about the ferry cost when considered against the total. The more we see of your take on things the more I think we need to add it to our trip list. Watched the tight tracks last week with interest as our little truck would struggle to fit through some of those spots without tree pruning (or a caravan to clear a branch or two🙂). Given your current truck (bus) build and our other comments I realised this might be of interest. We helped out an auto journo friend with a video a while back - ours is the 'baby' of the two Canters. Wifey took some drone footage too. ua-cam.com/video/xWRfPuCgxhg/v-deo.html Looking forward to the next instalment. Hope all is going well!

@contributor7219 what an awesome little truck! The new bus has front, rear, and centre lockers, so hopefully, this gives optimum flexibility, especially with 24 gear ratios! I'll give that video a bit more of a watch tomorrow. it looks very interesting. The Cape is well worth the trip. You don't have to do any crazy stuff to get to the tip. Pundsand Bay is also amazing, we will show that next week. Safe travels. 👍🍻

Glad you enjoy the videos, this campsite was one of our favourite of all time! The place we stayed here is in wiki camps as "George River Remote Bush Camp" - that's the 'area' as there are a few different camps around the wiki marker. The area also changes from season to season due to flooding so it may not be the same as when we were there which was a few years ago now! I must warn you though, the track in was VERY tight and rocky, there was bits of caravan everywhere so probably a good idea to park the van at the lookout, unhitch and go in for a bit of a reconnaissance trip first as it might not be accessible to large setups. If you do manage to get into the site, it really is one of the best in Australia, so enjoy! 😀😀🍻👍

For some bizarre reason the idea of doing The Cape when it's wet appeals to me. Not sure why. Doubtless cleaning the first couple of inches of red mud off everything would soon rid me of that compulsion! I didn't realise the PDR had so much black top though. We'd be inclined to relax and take our time too and just see what the place has to offer. It must have been so tempting to try to break the speed record, your vehicle/van, and/or the record for the highest towing bill by belting through that water crossing - how on earth did you resist? 🙄 Love the 'hamster cupboard' (of course) and we are frequent users of the term: 'to hamster away' in our own pantry. With any luck the weather did 'break' once you crossed the ranges on the PDR. It's one thing to have a dry and cosy space to escape the rain, quite another when you have to spend most of your time doing so. Definitely one of those 'that wasn't in the brochure!' times on the trip to 'warmer' places. It still looks very pretty though, despite the rain, and it's great to see someone doing this as a touring journey. That was impressive shopping tetrising, especially carrying a fast-growing little one! 😳 Hopefully all is going as expected and everyone is as happy and well as possible while you are on the road. I'm sure the early nappy trauma will pass as quickly as it comes on 🙂 Rocky Creek will be on our list I think. When I was still studying we had a training sergeant who had served in the Cavalry in Vietnam, but never spoke about his experiences. One Saturday afternoon three of us had our heads down in books in our common room and he came and sat with us. For reasons we never discovered he opened up to us just that once and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. I can't visit a memorial without thinking of him and the friends he lost, or that afternoon, despite the passage of more than 40 years. Thank-you for taking the time out to remember, and to share that moment with us all 🙏🏻

@@VetinaVan Records like that, especially those which give us insight into what it was like to be so young and face such terrible ordeals, are priceless reminders of the very human (and indeed animal) cost that is paid in all wars. May we never forget, and if only we could relegate such conflicts purely to historical footnotes. It's great to hear all are doing well. Safe travels.

How good is the rain. Makes everything nice and green but not ideal when we have been trying to show some WA friends our beautiful tropical part of the world. We’ve never had any luck with Sapphires either but loved the lava tubes. A place above Mount Surprise called Obriens creek is great to swim in when the creek is flowing and we did find some sapphire stones there. Safe travels.

@hapninemptynesters the Queensland outback was looking more like New Zealand dairy country when we came through, everything was so green! Out gem fossiking thus far for our entire trip has fallen short of our expectations, but there is always more time to turn that around! Safe travels. 👍👍🍻😀

Gee, nice to see the weather cooperating and making the 'outdoors lifestyle' such a joy! Queensland is really bunging on the welcome there 🙄 The lava tubes look amazing though and being able to see the path of the lava flows by the colour of the foliage is something that never even occurred to me until you mentioned it. We might have to venture to that part of the world if we ever decide to do The Cape as wifey loves her fossicking too. Was that a Bettong early in the video? It was very cute whatever it was. Hope all is going well with the new family addition and with the truck (bus) build as well. Looking forward to the next episode as always.

@contributor7219 it could have been a bettong, we did not get a long look at it. If all goes well, we should get the bus in October, hopefully sooner as once the baby comes, we don't have transport until the bus is finished!! Tania is doing well, very pregnant now! 👍😀
