Stanton Calibration Standard Comparison The 581EL vs The 981HZS
1965/1981
Stanton’s First vs Stanton’s Last.
Prior to 1965, all Calibration Standard models were under the Pickering brand. The 581EL was the first cartridge from Stanton Magnetics, a separate company from Pickering. 16 years later, Stanton released their last Calibration Standard Model, the 981HZS. The technical specifications of both are very similar, but after 16 years of refinements and innovation, you would expect to hear differences, especially comparing an elliptical with a line-contact stylus. Since the line-contact traces significantly more of the groove wall, there should be more clarity and detail.
The record is an early Mercury stereo with extreme channel separation. Victor Herbert - March of the Toys.

Comparing Empire's first phono cartridge with one of their last.
Переглядів 29721 годину тому
1959/1986. The difference in quality between Empire’s first cartridge and one of their last is night and day. The first cartridge, the model 88 was rudimentary and its execution was poor. The model 88 should have been pulled from the market; the cartridge emitted and loud hum and tracking ability was poor. To Empire’s credit, they persevered and continued making improvements and finally after 9...
Phono Cartridge Comparison Stanton 681EEE vs Empire 2000Z
Переглядів 62821 день тому
1975/1976 Two flag-ship models from Stanton and Empire. Both use the same moving iron design with permanent magnets within the cartridge body. Both feature 2 Humbucker coils per channel, low mass moving stylus assemblies with high tracking ability, low distortion and low tracking forces. The only design difference between the two is that the Empire has laminated pole pieces and the Stanton has ...
Phono Cartridge Comparison Shure vs ADC

Shure V15 Type II Improved vs ADC XLM MK II Improved. 1970/1980 Two Improved versions. The Shure was an improvement to the original Type II, but the ADC’s improved model was not an improvement to the original XLM MK II. ADC had developed a new omni-pivot suspension block that was used in all their current models. The MK II designation was given to a mid-priced model just below the top XLM MK III.

1964/1980 A comparison between ADC’s first induced magnet cartridge, the Point Four/E vs one of their last models, the ZLM Improved. 1969/1971. The 1000ZE vs the 1000ZE/X. Empire’s flag-ship model first released as a moving magnet cartridge and later changed to a moving iron design. The cartridge bodies are physically identical except for the labels. The ZE is slightly heavier by 0.1 gram and the coils of the ZE/X have different inductance and resistance values. The stylus assemblies are also physically identical but the sha...

1978/1981. The top 2 high impedance Samarium Cobalt moving magnet cartridges from Stanton. Samarium Cobalt magnets are 1/10th the mass of standard magnets making the moving mass lighter than moving iron and moving coil cartridges. Phono Cartridge Comparison Empire EDR 9 vs Ortofon 2M Black

1979/2007 Even though the cartridges are 28 years apart, these 2 models have very similar technical specifications. When you normalize the EDR.9’s $200 price to 2007, it comes within $50 of the 2M Black. The EDR.9 was Empire’s first cartridge to have a stylus shape other than a spherical or elliptical. The improvements are incremental and whether there is an audible improvement is left to the listener's ears.

I had a 2M Red for about 6 months. It was the first cart i bought since returning to vinyl. To be honest it almost ended the relationship again because although the basic tonality was good the cart would rapidly fall apart into a distorted, harsh, gritty hash of a sound on any less than perfectly mastered record. Long sided LPs were ruined, the IGD was appalling. A record cut hot would distort so much you could reach out a grab a handful of the stuff. The 2M Blue is the saviour of the range and the sweet spot. It actually sounds clearer and more tonallly correct than the 2M Bronze. Its proven to track better than the 2M Bronze as well. It has the best tonality of the three and yet the simple switch to a nude tip makes a dramatic difference. The harshness and distortions are no longer a problem. As good as a £1k moving coil? No. Low enough to enjoy? YES. There is also the 2M Black and indeed that is the 2M Blue sound with even lower distortion BUT it comes at a cost of much more tricky alignment and even when thats perfect it is presents tics and pops and other extraneous vinyl noise more than any cart ive ever known. At its price point it makes no sense, there are better MC's for less money ..... Ortofon Quintet Blue, AT 33EV and PTGii are three examples!

It's no wonder why the SHURE M3D cornered the market during the late 50's early 60's. That early Empire was trash. I've heard much better sounding ceramic cartridges. Why would Empire even sell such trash?

Fredrick Fennell and the Cleveland Symphonic Winds. A Telarc Recording. Interesting note: This recording was distributed by Audio Technica possilby to showcase their cartridges. Certain cartridges cannot track the bass drum, the stylus will jump out of the groove. The Shures seem to handle it with no problem.

I have the AT150ML and recently purchased an Sa replacement to try out, I wonder why Audio Technica puts its Shibata on top ( more expensive) compared to their microline versions…. Any idea?

    • @vinyltranslators3730
      @vinyltranslators3730 28 днів тому

Manufacturers started using the MicroLine stylus just when vinyl sales were starting the downward trend and completely collapsed in the 90's. Sales of Microlines were disappointing and some manufacturers never used the stylus in their models (Ortofon for example). Plus Microlines are expensive to make and it isn't worth the price considering no one is buying them. Shibata's were first used in the 70's when vinyl sales were at its peak and the user base is well established with strong replacement sales.
