Even though the cartridges are 28 years apart, these 2 models have very similar technical specifications. When you normalize the EDR.9’s $200 price to 2007, it comes within $50 of the 2M Black. The EDR.9 was Empire’s first cartridge to have a stylus shape other than a spherical or elliptical. The Large-Area-Contact stylus was very similar to the 2M Black’s Shibata stylus tracing over 80% more of the groove wall compared to an elliptical stylus. It is the last cartridge manufactured by the original Empire company.
EDR-9 for the win! (not to mention much less surface noice)
I prefere the Empire EDR-9
Prefer Empire
I have an Empire 2000 in my collection. Plus four Empire turntables.
EDR 9 By far for me. One of the most significant cartridges ever made.
2M BLACK esp for playing my Connie Francis collection. i have the 2M blue one.
Empire EDR-9 Best!
I have an EDR.9 with two basically-new stylus assemblies and it sounds dramatically different depending on which one I use. Either age related suspension issues or questionable quality control- but it's hard to really say with a cartridge that's 40 years old. With one of the styluses on it, it's among the better sounding carts I own (and I own many). With the other, it's too edgy/bright.
I'm going for the 2M Black
I think the Black sounds smoother! Shibata stylus?
@@robertjermantowicz-uw3iw yes, it is Shibata
I may be wrong but it sounds like Mantovani playing.
2m black better balance sonics with sweet strings
but empire old school sound
not bad
Definitely the 2M Black. More defined, better highs, clearer bass, quite surprised. I have one and really like it. The EDR 9 is very close, and depending on the system, may sound better. Great video! Both cartridges are outstanding sonically.
