Dan’s Story
I started my furniture restoration business thinking I would be a small shop and hoped to keep the lights on. We focused on a quality product and accepting the challenges that each piece had. My son Arthur came to help with the work and added skills and talented we needed.
“It will never leave my shop until it is good enough to brag about”(and I like to brag).
Every time we repair something it keeps it out of the landfill and keeps another tree from being cut down to replace it.
The more we share our knowledge the more times this happens.
We work on all types of pieces, from brand new pieces damaged in shipping to antiques that are hundreds of years old.
We will try and post weekly depending on the work we have.
If you can subscribe, like, comment, share(any or all) you will help us with this project.

I’m going to be honest, I never envisioned my business developing into where we are today.
We have 2 shops, we have worked for museums, rock stars, actors, athletes and were asked to consult on the Queen Mary.
I have my customers to thank for this success and the way we show our appreciation is by giving you back the best we have in us.
I can’t remember my customer’s name or face but when I ask them about the piece I restored for them I can recall every detail about the project.
We have sifted though personnel looking for the people that are natural craftsmen, artisans or just to stubborn to give up until they Get it Right!
This has created a team and attitude that has tremendous pride in the work they do.
Thanks for your time and attention

    Dry or wet sand?

  • @zer0gravity184

    I might have missed this in the video, but you're using a pulse wave unit, not the continuous wave... yes? If that's the case, this would work on outdoor funiture as well. Materials such as aluminum, wrought iron, marble, concrete, fiberglass, etc could be integrated within your particular cleaning/restoration service. Btw, has this increased your customer base? How were you able to market your new service? Do you charge by the job or by the hour? The reason I asked is because I live in the southeastern part of the US and see a lot of potential in using this type of equipment for residential and commercial use. It's relatively a new market and I would certainly like to capitalize on it if everything falls into place. Unfortunately, there's not enough information out there to support it as a stand alone business.

      We have used it on metal and it works very well. We purchased the 100 watt machine but the 200 watt machine would have been a better choice for thick finishes. We strip about 75% of our projects with the machine and it has held up. We only do refinishing and our shop keeps the machine busy. Here is the link to the machine we purchased www.jnctlaser.com/laser-machine/laser-cleaning-machine/100w-laser-cleaning-machine/

    Good morning! Thanks for the video! One question though. Can you begin the process on raw wood or does it need to be sealed first? Thanks and I look forward to your reply! Dan

    • @danthefurniturerepairman9411
      @danthefurniturerepairman9411 День тому

      You can start with raw wood but it will act like a stain, penetrating the wood fibers which is OK. I always seal the wood first because it lets me see the color of the wood and I can adjust my touch up to that color also if the my first layer is a bad choice it lets me sand it off and go again because it hasn't absorbed into the wood fibers.

      thank you for the reply. I have another question for you though. I do not do any lacquer spraying because I'm not set up for it. Therefore I hand apply polyurethane. But before I apply polyurethane I put down shellac. With this information, what should I be mixing my pigments with and if I need to remove it from the surface, what's the best product to do that? Thanks

      We are very happy with the machine. It has paid for itself. We do use lens covers up quickly, we get about 6 hours out of one. There is a learning curve to it and getting the settings correct is important. We have a 100 watt machine and wish we had purchased the 200 watt machine because there are some paints it struggles with. Holly crap! Did you consider what might happen to passers by if some overshoot from your laser hit them in the eye when you were using that thing outside of the shop? Class 4 lasers are extremely dangerous. Lasers are great but you need to impose some safety rules, including protective barriers around whatever you are working on.

    I just reupholstered my kitchen stools. They have non-threaded inserts in mdf and they all pulled out. After watching this incredible video, I’m thinking I need to purchase threaded inserts and use epoxy. Im thinking that I could repair the hole and then drill in the new inserts. Do you think the repair will hold? Do you have any other suggestions. Im so disappointed as they all pulled out the first time I sat on it and leaned forward to get off 😭

    I like how at the 3:40 mark you have the laser pointed out at the general public walking by. Pretty much the highlight of the video. I used to get annoyed at people who would stop outside my shop and take inventory to share with their burglar friends. This totally solves that!!

    I know little about varnish. Other that it's supposed to protect wood. But does varnish itself not scratch? I have seen scratched varnish plenty of times, but I rarely see scratched wood without varnish?

    • @danthefurniturerepairman9411
      @danthefurniturerepairman9411 2 місяці тому

      Varnish is the clear coat that is used to seal the wood. It scratches. If you scratch deep enough you will scratch through the varnish and scratch the wood. Almost all furniture has some form of varnish or wax on it. Hope this helps.

    • @danthefurniturerepairman9411
      @danthefurniturerepairman9411 2 місяці тому

      No we haven't used it on any flooring. I think the poly on the floors may be too tough for the 100 watt machine. There is a new 300 watt machine that may be the answer to the very durable finishes.

    hi dan, thank you, I sanded through the veneer so deeply. I did not realize it was a veneered bench till after the fact.. learning. can I fill in a semi deep spot with the powder? or should I call it a day? rebecca

    • @danthefurniturerepairman9411
      @danthefurniturerepairman9411 2 місяці тому

      You can fill the deep spot with a putty and sand it to the level of the rest of the piece. Maybe drip some thin instant glue around the veneer edge to keep it in place. Then color it to match. It may take a few tries to get the color correct but look at each failure as a learning experience. In my shop we say 'We succeed by failing' Feel free to email me pics at danthefurniturerepairman@gamil.com and I will see if I can offer any suggestions.

      I would make some paper tracings and use them to transfer the shape. Slowly build up the moldable to make the shape and sand it smooth after it hardens. Not hard to do, if it looks bad just sand back down a little and go again. You can wet your fingers with water and shape the moldable when it soft like clay. I have a video coming out this week showing touch up coloring that might help. Subscribe and hit the notifications bell to see when it comes out. Best of luck!

    Will this work on damage that happened due to chemicals? A scented diffuser was knocked over on a table and I didn’t realize it, so the oil sat overnight and when I wiped it away, it took the finish with it 😢

    • @danthefurniturerepairman9411
      @danthefurniturerepairman9411 2 місяці тому

      Yes it will. You should clen the area well with denatured alcohol then do a few light coats of sealer first to make sure you put some barrier in case there are any chemicals left over that will create reactions. After you have sealed it well then do your color touch ups. Take you time and go with light layers. Best of Luck!
