Dan’s Story
I started my furniture restoration business thinking I would be a small shop and hoped to keep the lights on. We focused on a quality product and accepting the challenges that each piece had. My son Arthur came to help with the work and added skills and talent we needed.
“It will never leave my shop until it is good enough to brag about”(and I like to brag).
Every time we repair something it keeps it out of the landfill and keeps another tree from being cut down to replace it.
The more we share our knowledge the more times this happens.
We work on all types of pieces, from brand new pieces damaged in shipping to antiques that are hundreds of years old.
We will try and post weekly depending on the work we have.
If you can subscribe, like, comment, share(any or all) you will help us with this project.

I have my customers to thank for this success and the way we show our appreciation is by giving you back the best we have in us.

Pulling Finish Nails with Custom Drill Tool
Hi Dan! What should I use on the wood after the aceton? My coffeetable needs some protection?
Once it is stripped you should sand it with 150-220 grit sand paper, stain and clear coat it. There are a variety of clear coats you can use read the labels to make sure the stain and clear coat are compatible.
@danthefurniturerepairman9411 Oke got it. Now I can finish my old oak living room furniture! Thanks chief🫡 My house will become a Home because of you!
Superb video, exactly how it should be done! made all the mistakes you mentioned so now will go back and do it right!
Hi would it be possible to have the link please. I’m in uk and struggling to find one here.
Hi would it be possible to have the link please. I’m in uk and struggling to find one here.
I love the way you explain things like why you need WAX-free shellac! These vids are super informative. Keep em coming! Greetings from Brussels!
Glad they are helpful. thanks for watching!
Another suggestion - To glue pieces of wood together I recommend liquid nails. It’s commonly used to glue floor boards down in the house
I have used liquid nails for attaching cabinets, mirrors and flooring. For repairs I wouldn't use it because it's shear strength max is 240 psi Carpenter glue shear strength is over 2,000 psi depending on the glue and material. The reason being, carpenter glue soaks into the wood much better knitting the 2 pieces together. Hope that helps
Very good. I suggest using GRK truss head screws. They are used to mount cabinets and are better than dry wall screws.
So glad I found this channel! Im learning real woodskills from a real expert!
Glad we are able to help. Let us know if there are any videos you would like to see. Maybe we can make one.
Excellent job.
Thank you so much!
I own a CurerK replica. It is 2 years old. The right shock mount failed last week. They are sending a new bottom shell under warranty. I would recommend this company. I am surprised that these mounting points were engineered this way. My chair mounts appear as strong, if not more substantial, than the Eames, but they broke. I don't think that these mounts should have been engineered like they are. This is a high stress area. I understand this was for aesthetics, but If it was a through bolt mount, there would never be a problem. It could be done with two high strength bolts with a head that looks appropriate for the application. Maybe a black flat or round head. Just my two cents.
It is a good point. The problem with a through bolt is the plywood arm becomes at risk and will break in half if out under too much stress. We have replaced many of the lower backrest shells because the wood failed. When this happens we have to purchase a new backrest piece, try and get one with similar grain and color, then color adjust it to match the other pieces. I agree there should be a design change but I don't think it will happen any time soon. if given the choi
Hey dan just found your channel. Great stuff. Could you do a video on how to achieve a certain opacity when touching up? O have some chairs that I havent been able to finish because the original stain shows very little grain. Its not fully opaque like a paint though. Its confusing.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try and put a video together explaining the touch up process and how to achieve different results.
@danthefurniturerepairman9411 thanks!
Once again a great video!
Thanks for watching!
Thank You!
I always learn from you. Thanks again, Dan!

What is the difference between varnish, lacquer, and shellac?
Shellac is an alcohol based product it can be sprayed, brushed or wiped on. French Polish is a way of building shellac with a pad. Varnish sometimes refer to an oil based top coat to seal and protect the wood which sometimes comes with color in it. It is also a generic term for the top clear coat over the sealer. I use the term varnish in this way. Lacquer is a nitro cellulose base product that melts the layer it is being applied to and joins with it chemically. Because of this lacquer can't be brushed on and has to be sprayed. Sanding sealer sometimes is made from the same material and the 1st coat can be brushed on. Hope this helps If you want to donate to support our channel our PayPal is paypal.me/furniturerepairman
Hi Dan, Thanks for sharing this video! I own a 300 years old wooden house in the Netherlands, over the years it has been painted many times in many colors. Based on your experience, would you suggest a laser machine could be a suitable instrument to strip away several layers of paint from antique doors, beams or even larger panels? I'm not looking for a paint stripping tool that is necessarily faster than the traditional methods, more thorough and non damaging the wood is important. I'd be grateful for your thoughts on this!
Good question I hope Dan replies.
Hello, I'm not sure it will work on the old lead base paint. If I were going to purchase one for that purpose I would get a very high watt machine. We found it will strip off the top layer of paint on furniture but struggles with the primer. Sometimes we are able to remove the primer with multiple passes and sometimes it loosens the primer enough that it can be easily removed with a scraper. I would think the 300 watt machine or above would be able to handle the work. The 200 watt machine may be able to do it but we have never used one(ours is a 100 watt machine) You have to use a putty knife to shield any glass you are working close to. Hope this helps. @danthefurniturerepairman9411 I spoke to a manufacturer and they said 1000w machines will take 1.5mm of paint - didnt mention anything about lead though. I wonder if lighter woods are more difficult to strip clear coats off of. I read that white paint takes longer to strip as it reflect laser light more.
Great video Dan. I just bought a sectional corner piece blew out hope to use some of your tips thanks.
You can fix that, I know you can!
How big is that little block of wood you’re using to mold & sand that piece of furniture?
Its 1 inch by 3/4 in by 4 in
Great video!
Thanks! Glad it was helpful.
Thanks so much - I had this exact thing happen to one of my favorite chairs and was worried I was going to have to completely strip it down to get a solid base for the springs. This was super helpful! Thanks!
Glad we could help! Best of luck with your chair.
I have a small area of acetone damage to my brand new nightstand that is a beautiful matte color gray/silver. I am covering it up with a coaster right now. The acetone bottle had acetone on the bottom and I sat it on the nightstand without knowing it. When I realized it was there and tried to wipe it off it took the finish off. How can I fix this spot without causing more damage.
That is a very difficult repair. We have touched up a few of them and it takes a few tries to get it right. You can make a cut out in a piece of paper and lay it over the repair area. Don't tape it down because the tape may pull off some of the color when you remove it. Then working with a few spray cans mist in a color that is close. Practice first on a piece of paper to see the colors and spray pattern. With a few tries and a little luck you may be able to blend it in. Car part places sometimes have lacquer spray cans with colors and silvers etc if not you can purchase from a mohawk supplier. Beautiful work! I came to learn about how to apply toners to match some flooring in my house. Thanks for the video.
You’re welcome, hope it helps you match your flooring!
Thank you for restoring it without changing it, it does my heart good to see someone do that!
I’m glad you appreciated that!
That was incredible
Thanks so much!
Would you still apply a stripper product before using the scotch brite type pad?

Need to repair the frame of my sofa termite's destroy part of the sofa where I found you
Best of luck!
Have you any suggestions for fixing a sofa bed frame that has bent and won’t fold into close the sofa anymore?
I cut the metal at the bend, then span the area with L channel and bolt it to both sides. This should make it straight again.
Thank you! I've searched in the past for instruction on how to retie the springs (an electrician used my chair as a step stool) but all I came up with was videos on how to completely reupholster a chair. Can't wait to tackle this project in the cold lonesome month of January.

Absolutely amazing repair! There are SO many Mohawk products it's hard to know which ones to get. Have you ever used their Blendal sticks?
Yes I have, they are very heavy with pigment so we found we had to build slow with them in layers to make sure the clear coat had good adhesion. They are a great tool.

Hi there. Thanks for the great video. I did try and send you an email but it's not going through. Is it possible to share the settings with me? I just got a unit and doing tests and seems like I have not enough power to strip varnish or too much and it burns the wood. I have a sfx 300 watt unit. Thanks again for the awesome video.
Hello You can email me at danthefurniturerepairman@gmail.com I will send you pics of our settings and the lens we use
What is called the laser machine?
Hello You can email me at danthefurniturerepairman@gmail.com I will send you info on the machine
Does Dan answer any questions? I have a veneer situation and I’m wondering if this technique could work for me!? I’m stumped.😊
Yes I can help. You can email me at danthefurniturerepairman@gmail.com if you put a phone number and good contact times I will try and call or answer through email
Great idea. Less chemicals in the landfill.
Yes!
Dry or wet sand?
I dry sanded
I might have missed this in the video, but you're using a pulse wave unit, not the continuous wave... yes? If that's the case, this would work on outdoor funiture as well. Materials such as aluminum, wrought iron, marble, concrete, fiberglass, etc could be integrated within your particular cleaning/restoration service. Btw, has this increased your customer base? How were you able to market your new service? Do you charge by the job or by the hour? The reason I asked is because I live in the southeastern part of the US and see a lot of potential in using this type of equipment for residential and commercial use. It's relatively a new market and I would certainly like to capitalize on it if everything falls into place. Unfortunately, there's not enough information out there to support it as a stand alone business.
We have used it on metal and it works very well. We purchased the 100 watt machine but the 200 watt machine would have been a better choice for thick finishes. We strip about 75% of our projects with the machine and it has held up. We only do refinishing and our shop keeps the machine busy. Here is the link to the machine we purchased www.jnctlaser.com/laser-machine/laser-cleaning-machine/100w-laser-cleaning-machine/
👏🏼👏🏼👌🏼
Thanks so much for watching!
Good morning! Thanks for the video! One question though. Can you begin the process on raw wood or does it need to be sealed first? Thanks and I look forward to your reply! Dan
You can start with raw wood but it will act like a stain, penetrating the wood fibers which is OK. I always seal the wood first because it lets me see the color of the wood and I can adjust my touch up to that color also if the my first layer is a bad choice it lets me sand it off and go again because it hasn't absorbed into the wood fibers.
thank you for the reply. I have another question for you though. I do not do any lacquer spraying because I'm not set up for it. Therefore I hand apply polyurethane. But before I apply polyurethane I put down shellac. With this information, what should I be mixing my pigments with and if I need to remove it from the surface, what's the best product to do that? Thanks
Great tutorial. Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!

Was this a genuine Herman Miller chair?
Yes it's a Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair
Curious as to what happened with the laser? I'm looking to purchase one and you're that only one on UA-cam with a business that shows one in use. Any updates on it at all?
We are very happy with the machine. It has paid for itself. We do use lens covers up quickly, we get about 6 hours out of one. There is a learning curve to it and getting the settings correct is important. We have a 100 watt machine and wish we had purchased the 200 watt machine because there are some paints it struggles with.
