    There is some cool information on the ironhorse pipe. Minor video suggestion. The video flow of information would have been smoother if you put the spreadsheet in the video before you reviewed the dyno chart. That way when you mentioned short or long cushion or stinger the numbers would be in the viewers mind. Or they could scroll back and look at the spread chart.

    I’ve been running Husqvarna’s since 19 and 75, ain’t never shut one off with the starter rope pulled out. After your simple explanation why I should makes good sense. On one hand I’m pleased you taught this old dog the right way to shut off his Husqvarna’s but on the other hand I’m not thrilled about writing all this information on my saws because if I don’t my senility ain’t going to let me remember. @olemountainman3996 Ole Mountain Man!!! So glad to hear from you; it's been weighting heavy on my mind and was just hoping your were busy and that your bride was/is doing well; seeing your comment just lightened my shoulders and made my day!! Now, don't go to drawing hieroglyphics on your saws; I'm sure you use crayons, and crayons will attract the mice; normally a mouse has better taste than to chew on a Husky, but once tempted with peanut butter or crayons.... 😉🤣🤣 I didn't cover the WHOLE story... pulling the rope isn't needed on modern saws and could (mostly) get away with it on older saws. I was (more) trying to address how the old habit came about and how the monkey-see/monkey-do can be good or bad depending on the pawl location. Sure glad to hear from ya!!

      I’m up in the mountains doing a volunteer silviculture stewardship contract in a three way partnership. My job is to do the heavy work. Ain’t no pay but I do have the benefit of endless work. One of my major disappointments is I have no internet till next year and I miss a lot of your videos and most all of my comments won’t go out and gets erased if they don’t. I don’t understand UA-cam’s system because my emails go out, most of the time. This contact will go out because I’ve gone home to get supplies and see my sweetheart of 60 years. I’ll do my best to keep up with your channel, it’s the best one out there, especially now that I hear the purr of a Husqvarna on your show once in a while instead of the clunk clunk clunk of them damn Sthil’s 😁. The wife is doing well, but has more therapy before she can come up to the camp and be with her hairy Ole “drop dead gorgeous“ Mountain Man😮. PS: You’re room with all the testing, recording and filming equipment is a fantastic achievement, it puts out the best information over all others I’ve seen. Until the next pathway through the internet waves, Ole Mountain Man

    Hello. Mr harvey sent me over this way. The 4 minute stress test on the dyno is a cool idea. The only time i can think of a saw running wide open for 4 minutes straight is when running on a mill. You got me thinking mufflers and exhaust to a lot lately. Looking for a good balance between performance and noise, just something for all day cutting. I’m trying something like your tuned piped but I have the pipe about 1” inside the can kinda like a mid bleed stinger in theory. Going to try the heat gun trick. Keep up the great work man!

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1 День тому

      @BuckYaSaws That's why I like two strokes; every little nuance can keep my mind occupied for days!! With the stinger protruding into the can, I've found a bit of a performance gain by having the pipe cut at an angle to "catch" the exhaust as it comes out of the exhaust port.

If there's anything I can help you with on the mill, don't hesitate to ask; hope the same goes for me?? If I did mention the Wabash River (I have previously), it was actually misleading a little bit; I live on the *LITTLE* Wabash River; it dumps into the *BIG* Wabash River. The Little Wabash is still a proper river and not just a creek (aka crick) or stream; my property borders it; if I ever get rain again (droughty right now), my property will be UNDER it.

      @HawtSawz86 From what I hear, Red Armor is as good or better than the Amsoil that I'm using. After this quart of Amsoil (which I had to order), I may try some Red Armor; I can by it locally. At some point, I think the oils are like wrenches... whether it's snapon, mac, matco, cornwell, etc... THEY are all good wrenches and in a totally different class than the one that are stamped Taiwan on one side and "chrome vanadium" on the other.

    • @HawtSawz86
      @HawtSawz86 День тому

      @@HayChaffandSawdust1 I am sure I would love working with you, there is a lot of joy out there if people look for it. Holding humor in our lives I think is the best thing we can do for ourselves and those around us. On the wrench comparison, I agree 100%, that’s a great analogy. There are a couple of videos out there from Echo that are interesting that talk about how the oil was developed for small outdoor equipment and how that’s a bit different in application than a general 2 stroke oil or like how you mentioned in the video a boat 2 stroke. There’s obviously exceptions because a chainsaw sees different use than a weed whacker who rarely gets off the ground and different yet than a leaf blower who has the snot squeezed out of her the whole time. Thanks for all your videos and all the effort at putting testing and data towards the ideas and topics thrown around out there. @HawtSawz86 The crappier the job, the more need there is for a little good-humor; scooping manure with a tea-spoon would be fine task if everyone was in a good mood!! I've never gotten into the oils much; a chainsaw was just another tool; growing up, we reused motor oil after an oil change for bar oil. Brand new 30w oil in the gas can and shake it up for mix. Heck, even THAT worked just fine. After using it for a couple of tanks in the 026 with a new piston, there was NOTHING on top of the piston except for a sheen of oil... I was impressed with the Amsoil. Good evening Moonshine... ya know, *actually* the moon is more important that the Sun; the moon comes out and gives us much-needed light when it's dark outside; the Sun is out when it's already light enough to see!!! I could also use some of THEIR info (I've never milled with a saw); how long of a cut (under constant and near full load) *IS* a long cut? 5 minutes, full tank?? or do they let up on the load every couple of minutes to let it catch its breath?? Personally, I want to attempt to quantify a "safe" max temp; with THAT number, I could know when a ported saw if ported too hot to be a work saw; I think it will become easier and easier (as abilities get better) to be able to port a saw to the point that it can not cool itself any longer. Thanks for joining-in giving me another place to look for data!!

    • @SawChainTheories
      @SawChainTheories День тому

      @@HayChaffandSawdust1 It depends, small stuff a minute or 2, huge slabs a tank might make 1 cut or less. I always just ran them wide open the whole cut, others might get it a rest in the middle. Few of the things I do or have done that probably don't make a difference but made me feel better, Big saws (90+) I run with the low side 1/8 to 1/4 turn rich. They still rev cleanly but if left idling for more than 20 seconds or so they smoke and can stumble on the initial rev. The idea here is the fuel pooling in the cylinder helps them cool after long cuts. Big milling stuff, run them rich enough to take 500-800rpm out of the max rpm in the hope it helps cool. Something I really want to know, Does the fuel cool more efficiently than the oil. Say 25:1 vs 50:1 does the 50:1 run cooler due to the fuel content being able to cool the cylinder better or does the extra oil help control heat. The extra oil seems to help ring seal and possibly leads to slightly more power but does it run cooler or hotter?

    • @HayChaffandSawdust1
      @HayChaffandSawdust1 День тому

      @@SawChainTheories Whoa, whoa whoa!! You're asking me questions that would get me burned at the stake!!!! I ain't skeert and I got my asbestos underduds on, so here goes: I think a 40:1 will run cooler than 50:1 due to multiple reasons; First we can assume less friction on everything; second: if there's a better coating of good oil on the cyl walls, the rings will seal better; if the rings seal better, then less combusted gasses get by the rings and foul the bottom end. In a perfect world, the top end would be hot and the bottom end would stay cool due to always taking in cool air. Gasses blowing by the rings will actually heat the lower end some and foul the next charge with combustion gasses; in theory the fouled charge could run leaner and compound the problem. We know that a narrow squish band (the small circumference around the outside of the piston/combustion chamber) runs hotter than a wider squish band. Fuel under the squish band does not burn as early as fuel outside. The unburned/slower burned fuel acts as an insulator... or is just less hot ... in the area right next to the cyl walls. I picture it like a beer coozie, but on the inside. A wider squish band is a thicker coozie. The unburned fuel acts like a gasoline powered radiator; it doesn't produce much power, but is used for cooling instead. It's hard to watch some of my farming videos when the interest is chainsaws, but I think I spoke for @20 minutes on my theory while tedding straw?? Many of my farming videos, about 5-8 minutes in, go to chainsaw theory (in case you weren't aware). it was earlier in the year and some bigger channel(s) were watching my content, getting it wrong, and making their own... I started "hiding" chainsaw content for the real friends of the channel. FYI, there's another one coming up that is hay-making related, but it's REALLY about a timing advance in saws. Anyway... so, I think the fuel that is going to be combusted quickly offers no cooling effect; the fuel in excess (under the squish band and by running rich) does either cool the saw or makes less heat; same result... cooler saw. There, that oughtta get run out of town!!

      Longest I've ran when milling is maybe 12 min. Always WOT and non-stop. I can't tell it's getting much hotter in long runs, but I tend to stay rich and 40:1 mix. No extra cooling between slabs other than fuel and oil. I haven't milled a ton, but that's my experience.

      @fearghalmorrissey2601 I know another builder who has done just that, but it was on a saw such as a Husky 372; at that saw, he was able to get some readings; being on the side of the cylinder, it was protected from most of the combustion pressure. On saws such as Stihls and/or THIS Husky, the decomp in in the combustion chamber and dynamic compression would be immediately overpowered by the combustion pressure. I expect combustion pressure would be 600-1000psi. I've sure considered doing JUST like you suggest, but have not concluded a way that I think will work. Have you any ideas to overcome the spikes in combustion pressure at RPM? I wish I was better at Arduinos or BlackberryPI, but I'm not!!

I can/love-to argue either side... whether it's to present possible problems or possible solutions!! I say THAT to try to tell you that any ideas are welcome and I may point out problems, but it's out of pure respect and also to illustrate that I am mentally trying to debate with my piers (of which you are one)! I think, mentioning arduino and/or blackberrypi, (little computer gadgets with a HIGH refresh rate) it is highly possible to do JUST what you are suggesting by employing a pressure transducer; I'm just not near smart enough with those gadgets to program one... they come as a blank slate and use their own "language" to program one of them; I don't know the language. I tried wrapping my head around Arduino last year until I realized I it wouldn't do the task I wanted (data logging for my dyno so that I don't have to manually input data); I found that BlackberryPi could do it, but its language was much harder to learn/program. I know that was long-winded, but I wanted to illustrate that I LOVE other ideas and also, maybe somebody who knows BlackberryPI will read this and reach out. @toddzilla6491 I had to look up "SPL" as I didn't know what it was. I can see it being worse on some pipes. I've thought of using a decibel meter, but have been unsatisfied with HOW to properly use is. I would almost need to have it contained in my array of readouts so that I could document in real-time in conjunction with RPM/load. Also, the mic/pickup would need to be near(er) the location of the operator for it to be fair. Also, depending upon where the outlet of the pipe was, it could bounce off of a wall in my little cubby and give one exhaust-discharge-location an incorrectly-loud reading. Not saying it can't be done or isn't worth the little bit of fudge factor, but I've been trying to sort it out in my mind for a WHILE; I haven't come up with a solution that is beyond reproach. Enjoyed the video, came to the channel by iron horse. Saw your slab rack in one of your videos, would like to see a video of sawmilling.

      @stacyharmon5865 Welcome and I sure hope I don"t disappoint ya: Ironhorse is a heck of a person and having him "use" his reputation to help me is a big deal to me. I am actually trying to make more sawmill videos; I have one coming of cutting walnut slabs for a conference table. Thanks for being here and thanks, especially, for joining-in down here.

      @stacyharmon5865 Also forgot to mention that there are a few sawmilling videos, twin blade edger videos, lap siding videos, etc... on the channel and in playlists (in case you had not seen that they were there); Thanks again.
