THE PEDAL COLLABORATIVE
United States
Приєднався 19 жов 2022
Hey! How's it going? Welcome to The Pedal Collaborative! We're here to explore effects pedals in a different way. Sometimes we make videos about different ways to use a pedal. Sometimes we do a review of sorts. Sometimes we just play through a few at a time and let the pedals do the talking. Whatever brought you here, welcome! It’s truly a pleasure to have you join the conversation!
There's a bunch more to dive in and explore
There's a bunch more to dive in and explore
FIRST SOUNDS // Vongon Replay Polyphonic Synthesizer // Unbeatable performance in a small package!
Heyo everyone! It's been a minute since I (Alan) have been on the synth train. Too often I want to like a synth more than I do, and as someone not terribly knowledgeable on how synths work, I often get encumbered by all the options. Too many bells and whistles and not enough understanding can make for some pretty bad sounds it seems.
Not so with the @vongonelectronics Replay. This simple to use, and beautifully laid out is great for a bloke like me! It's easy to tweak and get something lovely and desired in this near WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) interface.
That said, the Replay is not just for synth simpletons like myself. It packs a punch and there are soo many sounds you can get out of this bad boy!
So come along this journey as we explore and discover what sounds we can find here with the Replay...and yes, I rely a bit on the arpeggiator here. It helps me tweak the sounds as I explore. Plus they just sound dang good!
From Vongon's website about the Replay: REPLAY is a polyphonic synthesizer with multi-mode arpeggiator inspired by the Roland Juno and the Korg Polysix of the early 1980s. Designed to embody vintage character while utilizing modernity and versatility of form.
Replay has a six-voice virtual analog sound engine that emulates the organic response of an analog circuit - enabling you to create a diverse range of sounds from rich pads and vibrant leads to snappy arpeggios and deep sub-bass tones.
Balancing scope, style and function - Replay has a slim footprint with 22 dedicated sound controls and a 2½-octave keyboard of genuine Cherry MX keys. The intuitive format and sleek design encourages an immersive, hands-on approach to creating your sonic palette.
Replay seamlessly integrates into your personalized setup with full MIDI I/O via 3.5mm jacks and USB connectivity. Compatible with standard effect pedal power supply, Replay connects effortlessly with your pedal board - streamlining your workflow for live performances, studio sessions, etc.
Additionally, Replay offers a user-friendly web interface. Your command center for managing presets, accessing extended parameters and downloading the latest firmware updates.
FEATURES
- 6-voice polyphonic subtractive style synthesizer
- Monochrome aluminum housing with Rogan knobs
- Multi-mode arpeggiator with MIDI beat sync
- 32-bit audio sound processing
- 22 dedicated sound controls
- 4 oscillator waveforms and 7 low-frequency oscillator waveforms
- 2.5 octaves of genuine Cherry MX keys. Installed with hot-swap sockets so you can replace the switch with alternative actions
- Web interface for managing presets, accessing extended parameters, and downloading the latest firmware updates

FIRST SOUNDS // Matthews Effects Technician. Is this a MOOD Killer?!?

When I first heard about the Matthews Effects Technician Dual-Channel Auditory Manipulator I was skeptical. Another reverb/delay/looper right? There’s no way it uncovers something new. It’s gotta just be another gimmick in a sleek package…and yes, it is indeed a sleek package. On that there is no doubt. It’s as if Apple designed a pedal, with its function, form, and beauty. But how can it sound...

I really enjoy my Earthquaker Devices Astral Destiny. It has an expression pedal jack. However, the 1 downside is that the presets are controlled by a knob and it requires that you physically turn it if you want to change presets. The Sloer looks like all the presets can be accessed via footswitch. I guess if you want all the possible features that are out there, you have to pay the big bucks for a Big Sky.
Fullest features I think go to the MercuryX or perhaps BigSkyMX. But yes, you can scroll through presets on the Slöer with your foot. Is the Astral Destiny mono or stereo? That’s a thing for me 🤣
@@thepedalcollaborative It's mono
😭 EQD makes great stuff! Wish more was in stereo
Hate me for saying it, but the gimmicky aesthetic makes it look more like something to be seen with in some east berlin hipster bar than something that will convince with sound. And what I heard so far sounds more like some pure data doodles from a prasberry Pi.
Keep listening. The video starts that way but definitely gets bigger!
I got the second to last one of these new I could find. I think the flexibility of it edges the new Dark Star for me, though I may get that one day
I’m thinking a stereo Sunlight is on the way!
As an owner of both, I like big sky more as it sounds more natural and helps tame the sound
Did you get the BigSkyMX or the OG BigSky?
@thepedalcollaborative the big sky MX. I actually run a wet dry wet set up, the day I got the mx I realised that it was something special it actually makes you feel you’re surrounded by real reverb. The mercury on the other hand sounds pretty synthetic, not in a bad way at all.
Why does the screen flash like that? It it just the camera?
The refresh rate on my lights don’t jive with the refresh rate of the screen and my camera. The screen is solid in real life though!
Excited to get mine tomorrow with a dark star!
Not THAT’s a great shipment! What colors did you get?
can you compare the mk1 and the mk2
Sad to say I do not have the Mk1 any longer 😭 Anyone else do a direct comparison?
They both do the dark reverb thing extremely well, but the strymon nightsky is worth the extra $79 for the versatility. It can do more dialed back regular reverb when you need it to. It also has a built in sequencer function and other midi capabilities not found in the sloer. I am assuming those were covered in another video already but if they werent, you definitely want to take that into account before choosing. I was able to find a slightly used nightsky in excellent condition for the exact same price as a brand new Sloer, so you probably can too.
Great deal! Nightsky is legit
The cc looper is very much like activating burst on the mc
Yes indeed! Definitely a cool function
Many thanks for the great comparison video! I could watch it all the time. And I wouldn't have thought that the reverbs would sound so different in direct comparison. But both sound extremely good. But now the most important question of all about the feel: DOES IT HAVE THE REAL „DRIP"??? Which pedal has the more authentic spring-like attack when the reverb tail unfolds? Thank you very much!
I’d say the Volante takes that prize. But they really are both very very good. Can’t lose either way!
One of the many very cool features of this pedal that might get overlooked, so great to see this video! Applications from pattern tremolo to cleaning up sloppy timing to gating other FX. Very cool stuff.
100%! You can do some pretty wild things for sure with this! Hopefully more people discover it :)
Mine finally shipped, so excited to use it!
Yes!!! You’re going to absolutely love it!!!
dm-101 feels very very very organic. cool presets tho!
Analog vs digital I suppose. The DM-101 is a wondrous device! Thanks for the kudos on the presets. They were super fun to make!
I liked the shimmer control. menu diving >.<
The shimmer is cool! Menu diving is meh
That fizzle out from the filter knob at 4:04 was so cool! Collision Devices always seems to knock it out of the park with their pedal aesthetics, but the creativity and execution of their pedal concepts always seems to be a step ahead of everyone else. I don't know how they made such a practical yet fun&experimental pedal at the same time with this one. It's crazy how massive this sounds without even being stereo (but I kind of wish it was stereo 😬)
It’s so good! We’re waiting for the Crushturnal to arrive (Paul ordered a limited colourway 😂) AND whatever device they’re releasing on 12/26!!! That has me stoked
Oh thank you very much! This is a very nice one ♥
Thanks so much! Another amazing pedal from you all! Can’t wait for the next one :)
Hey there! Soooo, I have a question: I owned an R1 for some time, loved it, but was ultimately let down by its audio quality. The Slöer sounded sooo much better, quality wise. It was shocking. I bought the Mercury X a few months ago and even though I'm loving it, I feel like I don't really need all its options. Sooo, since they have revamped it, I've been considering buying a used R1 and selling my Mercury X. Do you feel like the sound quality is better now? Or, say, on par with the Mercury X? Wishing you a great weekend! Thom
Hey there Thom! I just did an A/B here at the house. Strat into JHS Colour Box V2, into the R1 Mkii and MercuryX. Could not tell a difference. Asked my partner to also weigh in and she thought they were different presets on the same pedal. I would say grab one of the newer R1 Mkii and you’ll be happy as pie :)
@@thepedalcollaborative Hey there! Thanks so much! Yeah, just sold the Mercury X and ordered a used R1, that I will update. Can't wait! :) Thanks for your advice and trying it out!!!
How do you adjust the rate and depth of the modulators? Having a hard time figuring that out from the manual
Great question! To adjust the modulators like that, you press “control page” (the arcade button on the bottom between the foot switches.) The control page turns purple and then you start to select the modulators for the different effects. The modulator you’re controlling is based on the color of that particular arcade button (delay for example being the arcade button on the right). You use the mod 1 & 2 knobs while in secondary mode to adjust the modulator accordingly. Make sense?
Still haven't gotten mine
Hopefully soon!!! You get a shipping notice yet?
I want to like the Strymon, but the Sloer is just standing out 😊
The Slöer is incredible
This demo video didn't touch on the strymon's hidden weapon, the sequencer. That's worth the extra $79 alone. It's so much more versatile than the Slöer. I love Walrus pedals in general though.
You’re right. The video was focused more on sound and not as much functions. The sequencer on the Nightsky is unbelievably unique!
Greatdemo. Very vibey and shows it at its best from my viewing of vids so far. I go doom and dark blues / country ish when messing with reverb trail ideas lol when id prefer to do something like this more if ibought the pedal. Maybe its something i can learn tovibe more with the pedal than see how intense itll go 😂 keep up thegood work 👌
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying it. This pedal drips of vibes!
This is so awesome. I definitely will buy one, but I will add it still for this day. One of my favorite stereo reverb pedals is the Sloer. So good. I sold it once and bought it again and that’s it.
I’m very impressed with the upgrades on this one! Looking forward to the Sunlight which should definitely come
Your 2 pitches were in the left channel for both.. should one of them be in the right channel?
Good catch! According to the manual yes, pitch 2 should be in the right channel. I’ll investigate and report back! We also have another one coming (Paul couldn’t resist the White/Purple one from Relic Music) so we can compare that as well. Thanks for bringing it up!
Doubt it
😎
Lemme guess....$1000 cad😂😂😂
No! $399 USD, which currently is like $566 cad
@@thepedalcollaborative Jesus Christ...for a pedal....plus outrageous shipping too....I'll pass.

Hm2 killer ?
It knocked the HM-2 off my board that’s for sure
If you’re looking for a review that will make you not want to buy this pedal you have arrived
Rest your weary head for the search is finally over!
Maybe blooper killer.
Ooh yeah good thought!
something's wrong with both the stereo field and your gainstaging - the right channel overloads and clips, the panorama is not centered
Hey thanks for pointing it out! I’ll take a listen and see if I can’t fix it for the next one!
This sounds sick but it looks pretty deep, gotta start a codependent relationship with the manual for a few months
Haha! It’s actually pretty easy once you get the swing of things. Everything is laid out very intuitively. I’ll do another video of it diving a bit deeper and showing everything.
Is it the stereo Blooper-MOOD-source audio collider threesome baby I’m hoping it is?
Another fantastic video… I just HAD to buy The Technician and this reaffirmed my purchase. Would love to see on screen text based on what’s happening with the pedal as you’re playing. I feel that would enhance the viewing experience even more! But this is your channel, so do what you want haha How does this compare to MOOD or some of the other Chase Bliss/ ambient pedals for you?
Why thank you! The purpose of this video (as all the First Sounds videos are) is to just discover what you can find. Instead of spending time off camera finding sounds to showcase, this style just lets you, the viewer, go in the journey with me and find what moments you really like. The controls are laid out really well so it’s a pretty easy learn. I can make another video diving more into what everything does too so stay tuned 😎

Not as expensive as you think! They definitely pack a whole lot in for the price
Truth. Regardless of price, if something is out of reach, save for it! Budgeting advice via hashtags for the win 🥇
Definitely not a mood killer for me, especially given the amount of real estate it takes up. On the other hand, I’ve already been shuffling things around on my pedal board playground board, trying to make space to run this with my mood mkii. I just can’t seem to have too many looping pedals on my board. Wheels within wheels.
I suppose it depends on how you use the mood. I tend to generally use the wet side, and not much on the microlooper side, whereas some people are the opposite. Making room for both on your board would be killer!!
Is this a chroma console killer ?
That depends on how you use the Chroma! If it’s just reverb, delay, and looper then maybe! But there are many effects the Chroma does that the Technician doesn’t so I think no, it’s not a Chroma killer 😎
I think they are different tools with different goals. They make amazing products and i could see using both on a board.
Thanks for weighing in! You’re absolutely correct! Use both!
For me, the chroma console killer was the chroma console. And that’s after buying it twice and selling it twice. Did not jibe with the workflow at all, and I really didn’t like the differences in volume between effects. On the other hand, if I wasn’t the singer, I would probably have more fun bending over and fiddling with it, and I love the sounds other people get out of it.
I tend to use the Chroma more in the studio kind of like a mastering effect. It has its quirks, but definitely has places it shines
I was hoping you were gonna get your hands on this
Oh yes. Couldn’t resist! It’s really incredible
Ok, help me with something please. On the reverse setting there are those little pops/clicks. My flight delay does the same thing. Is this a power supply issue? Is this the way this particular reverse behaves? For example, my DD-20's reverse setting does not experience those pops/clicks. Just trying to understand if that's normal, or if its possible to clean up? Thanks. I have been using my flight delay with a one spot slim as its power source. Is that a poor quality power supply for this pedal? Just want to know I am not crazy.
I don’t think it’s a power supply issue. I think it’s either the digital sampling in the pedal or just the tap divisions. Not sure exactly where it’s coming from but we’ll keep at it and see if we can figure it out!
@@thepedalcollaborative Oh, I actually just got a reply from JHS this is their reasoning: "Hi Dylan, I have asked the design engineer and sent him several videos and audio examples & he said that is how they all are. It's kind of like the Danelectro Back Talk in that respect. The reverse mode is glitchy. John " So, I guess its just a quirk of the design.
@DylanMichaelToddMusic well that’s good to know! Glad they got back to you and thanks for sharing :)
I noticed the same thing happening with mine while in the Reverse setting. I went so far as to get another one and compare them side by side to make sure my original was not defective, and they both do it. Then I reached out to JHS describing what I was hearing as well as sent a few audio files and got this response: "I sent your sound clips to our design engineer as I was getting something similar on my end & wanted his input. He said in Reverse mode this is normal. You're hearing how the digital chip is reading back the delay memory when creating the reverse effect. It kind of adds more of a percussiveness to the original pick strike. Also when you're in reverse mode there is less headroom so digging in with big chords in that mode should probably be avoided especially if you have hotter pickups as the signal can more easily clip." The pedal overall is great and I plan to keep it for a very long time because it is designed so well and very intuitive to use without menu diving. I'd prefer the Reverse mode didn't click like it does sometimes, but I can live with it, and might even use it to my sonic advantage :)
I like how you said it, using it to your sonic advantage. Once you know the limitations you can work within them and use them accordingly!
Nice demo. That ground or hum loop noise was that coming from the pedal or the instrument ? Thanks!
That is coming from the interface computer. The pedal is clean as a whistle!
@ hey! Thank you!
@javiercabrera3517 you betcha!
I got mine a couple of days ago and for some reason I can’t get the repeats as loud as my guitar signal.
Hmm. You should have unity where both the wet and dry signals are the same around 12-2pm. If you’re not getting that maybe do a reset in the pedal. If that doesn’t work, try reinstalling the firmware. Lastly then reach out to Walrus. Alex and the whole customer service team are top notch and will take care of you for sure!
Good to know you guys actually do have heads.

Hey thanks so much! Yeah it’s got a lot under the hood. Definitely worth checking out to see what all it can do!
Boss SDE 3. Boss SDE 3000D I'm very tempted with both of them abd the boss OC 5 Also the electroharmonics POG 3
The SDE3 is pretty spectacular! So much punch from such a little box!
Nice one! I've been considering the Strymon Cloudburst... but now that I've seen this unit I'm torn. Ocean looks like Fun
Can the chorus and vibrato effects be used just by themselves without mixing them with delay?
Great question! Yes you can! Just turn down the time and repeats knobs until they’re all the way counter clockwise and you can the. Use the chorus and vibrato by themselves!
Do you find every amp usable? Great demo btw!
Thanks so much! Yes I would definitely say every amp is usable. In my playing I would personally lean more toward the lighter gain “Fullerton”, “London”, and “Dart” models, but the higher gain ones are great too!
@thepedalcollaborative thanks! I am waiting for my order of this pedal to come. Anything I should keep in mind? :)
They upgraded the boost feature so when you can tweak all the knobs, not just the volume. It’s great!
Absolutely incredible artwork

my favorite reverb right now on "Air" mode
Oh it’s such a good one!
You should do a video of the pedal oscillating
Not a bad idea!
Hmm. Something funky is going on with the stereo field there; even with the R1 bypassed. Lots of phase cancelation.
I have the ACS1 Mkii set up in stereo so my guess is what you’re hearing is from there?
@@thepedalcollaborative Sounds like it. For reference, I'm listening through an Apollo x4 summing from stereo to mono, using Neumann Kh120's for playback. I don't usually comment on these kinds of things because it's just not my place, however I thought it was interesting how it was throwing off my ears. Anyway, thanks for the response and thanks for demoing all the great gear you do!
@batflash oh wild! So you’re getting phase cancellation when you’re listening in mono? Have you tried in stereo with the same results?
@@thepedalcollaborative So that's the trick with playing things back in mono. It'll help you catch phase anomalies. In this case, you're losing some of the definition behind the notes themselves and a solid heap of low end... Which the low end shift is probably what triggered me to hit the mono button in the first place. So, it's it not a perfect cancelation across the whole signql, but rather parts of the frequency spectrum being canceled out. To conclude, it may be worth seeing it there's something going on from the output of the ASC1 to your interface, whether that be effects afterwards or levels set evenly. Also, it might be worth seeing if you have the same issue with the ASC1 in true bypass. Defintely listen back on speakers and headphones if you can. Lots of fun stuff to experiment with! This is when a stereo true bypass loop switcher would be handy.
@batflash very interesting stuff! I’ll have to dive into this more for sure and yes I just ordered a stereo loop switcher!
Mr Black is now 30% off!
Death By Audio is 15% off
Without bias, what would you say is better, the ACS1 MKII, Simplifier X, or Tonex One?
I truthfully can’t comment on the Tonex 1 or the Simplifier as I’ve not tried those.
