How To Turn on Your Tesla Powerwall 3 (Backup Switch)
Umm…you’re wrong about how long the battery back up would last during a grid outage. Since the solar panels continue to feed energy into the battery during sunny hours, it would last longer than you said. Just FYI…
Sorry, I’m definitely aware of that. Some of these numbers are under the assumption no solar energy would be coming in (during a storm, at night, etc)
@ Why would you assume that?
You missed this part 3:24 I mention a single unit can last 24+ hours and incoming solar will recharge the battery and power the home.
Zach, do you have any details on the communication cable from the universal wall connector to the gateway? My installer doesn’t seem to think the cable is required and I havent been able to find a wiring tutorial that details the communication cable.
Do you have a Powerwall system already or are you installing just the Powershare setup (No Powerwall, GW 3V and Universal WC)?
@@ZachSolarwe are waiting for our system to be installed. Powerwall 3, gateway 3, 9.6 solar, universal wall charger. It’s my understanding communications is needed for the “charge on solar” and future PowerShare settings.
Sure would love for SRP to approve my Powerwall 3s, then Zach could get these 3 things installed lol.
I would love that too! Hopefully soon 🤞
I have my Powerwall installed inside my insulated garag, but I live in western Wyoming, where temperatures go below zero for days. Does a power wall have a built-in heater that can use grid power to keep it above the -4 degrees that Tesla advertises? Do I need to use another heater to keep the garage above the -4 lower limit. ??
That's a good question. Short answer is kind of. It won't necessarily prevent it from going below -4 degrees, but it should help optimize the cell temp. This information on the Powerwall's "Heat Mode" might be helpful for you. energylibrary.tesla.com/docs/Public/EnergyStorage/Powerwall/3/WhitePaper/HeatMode/en-us/Powerwall-3-Heat-Mode-White-Paper.pdf
Installed a 10.7kW solar plus a Powerwall 3 in So. AZ last year. So far am having great results. I covers about 80% of my power usage. I plane add a PW3 Expansion battery to bring my coverage up to 90-100% this year. Really happy with my choice so far.
Nice to hear! That's a solid sized setup from So. AZ. A 2nd Powerwall would be a good addition. When you're ready, let me know if you need any help getting an expansion pack. I'm in Tucson and can set you up.
One thing i do know is, these things are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS... Fires at anytime
Oh brother 🙄 send me the data supporting that
We have solar and 2 Powerwall 2's but would like more battery. Currently power costs us 12 cents/kwh, and buys it for 4cents/kwh, we are in TN with TVA supplying our local utility. No peak time rates.
Very cool, Jack! Your system and utility sounds very similar to mine. I'm just holding out for Powerwall 3 to become compatible with my 2s.
@@ZachSolar We would love that, but we were told the 'kit' would be available at the end of '24, so we will see.
Don’t consider buying anything from Heil Tesla! He is a nazi and should be boycotted by the public!
Had 4x Powerwall 3 installed yesterday. It's been nice, but it's really distracting - can't stop checking how much I'm charging and how much I'm using.
Nice! It will wear off lol. If you have an iPhone, add the Tesla widget to the Home Screen to make it easy for ya
Just got our Powerwall running. Why does our charge staus keep moving from standby to charging? I can’t imagine this being normal. It’s not fully charged. Could there be a problem?
Standby is completely normal. Anytime the Powerwall is neither charging or discharging, it’s in standby. This can happen for several reasons depending on whether you’re in time-based control or self-powered. Hard to say without seeing your app’s history and power flow though.
I have an 8.69 solar power and get 3 pw3’s. On a good day in the summer time I generate about 7.8 kW at the highest peak in the winter time right now yesterday I generated 5 kW at the highest peak. Can the three power walls handle that intake of energy at the same time to fill those power walls?
Absolutely. Each PW3 has a max charge rate of 5 kW, so 3x gets you 15 kW. You may have to grid charge during some time of the year to fill them up to 100% though depending on how low your backup reserve will be.
@@ZachSolarsounds good. Thank for the info again.
I’ll need to set up a phone call with you regarding automation and how to work around my unique power bill rate
Happy to assist! I can help with that. calendly.com/infozachsolar/support
I would have loved to see a Powerwall 3 expansion pack as an option here in addition to the full Powerwall 3s.
Let me know if you have any Qs on the exp packs!
Nice video. I’m planning to. Put point guard. System to my existing set up of Tesla. Power 2 technically I can not send more power to grid. Doing off grid to charge my ev with out battery for now getting extra power from grid if solar is not fully charging the car can it be done. Dyi by my self I’m very technically inclined. Your suggestion will be appreciated
Thanks! And shoot, I'm certainly not the most DIY inclined person here in YT. I wouldn't be confident in my feedback on that. But it sounds like a really interesting project.
PW3 with backup switch has been a headache…previously had pw2 and gateway ZERO ISSUES…this new system is constantly discharging for no reason, Tesla and my installer have no clue why, Tesla is elevating issue to engineers to figure out…it’s annoying…and I’m knowledgeable of setting correct schedule for TOU…it not that…battery just discharges blips of energy for no reason what so ever, all day
How strange. That’s very disappointing to hear. I hope you get a resolution ASAP.
@ any ideas why this might be happening? I know it’s a long shot, but anything can help…awesome channel👍
@ Thank you! And shoot, I wish I had even a good guess. I imagine Tesla would be the only one who could get the right answers for something like this. Does it discharge itself randomly even when on Self-Powered control? Or only on Time-Based control?
@ yeah discharges randomly no matter if on TOU or self consumption mode…so weird it’s only little blips of energy discharge, but eventually blips add up and battery loses a few %’s and if my Tesla is charging of solar during that time….car stops charging to prioritize the battery, once it hits 100% again, battery starts to discharge again
Great video! I had a 9.8kw array with a PW3 installed last October. The dc expansion batteries were just released in our area and it should be installed in a couple of weeks (ordered it in Oct). The primary purpose for us was backup for outage protection. I do have a span panel that rejects non critical loads, but I have the PW3 set to always have a reserve of at least 40% which was the driver for getting a second PW3. Hey thanks for the tip on Netzero, it's my go to app and have 1 automation set up, but would love to see a more in depth video. Keep up the great work and Thank You!
The cost for the DC expansion was $11k
Thanks Mike! Keep me posted on your expansion pack experience. That's cool you already have one lined up and about to ready to go. Hard to beat a Solar + Powerwall + SPAN setup. Enjoy it!
When my system is installed, I'm also planning a min 40% reserve. Then, using the PW3 Storm Watch feature, I'll charge up and maintain 100% until the bad weather has passed.
Rack mount batteries! Less than half the cost and you can keep expanding when done right.
Server rack is a great option too. Just a different market of buyer IMO. Did you do your own install? I can't remember. I know you got the REC Alphas.
@@ZachSolar Yes, I installed the inverter and batteries in my garage. I hired a licensed electrical contractor to install the panels on my roof, run the electrical from my main panel on the south side of my house to my garage on the north side through the attic (about a 60' run), and back to a subpanel next to the main.
@DerekRhoads Cool setup, Derek! I’m sure that was a fun project to take on.
Except during On-Peak, APS charges me less for power from the grid than pays me for power I send to the grid. The APS ToU-DC plan makes drawing from a Powerwall more expensive except during On-Peak periods.
Good point! AZ utilities are very unique with our demand charges. You must have a strong export rate too. APS is under 7c/kWh nowadays for their buyback.
Got the $0.07619/kWh buyback. Laughed when the Tesla app didn't allow buyback rates to be higher than the purchase rates.
@@jabbathespud Haha, Yeah it's a very uncommon situation to have that come up. Idk why they still don't allow it. Probably to prevent people from getting the numbers backwards.
I've contracted to have two Powerwall 3s installed, but there seems to be a backlog due to high demand. The installer thinks about a 6 weeks wait. What kinds of backlog are you seeing Zach?
I've been waiting four months for mine. Finally decided to pivot and installed Tesla Solar inverters while waiting for the PW3s. When the PW3s become available it'll be easy to swap the inverters for the PW3s. By going with the Tesla inverters the solar roof configuration can remain unchanged.
This is definitely an issue for all installers right now. Probably will be through Q1 of this year. We aren't seeing anything quite that long on our end. It will be well worth the wait though!
We have 9.6 Kwh solar array with one power wall 3. The problem is that the one power wall 3 will not last all night and it becomes necessary to charge up during non peak times so that we can cover the mornings with the battery. I am hoping to get a dc expansion pack to cover evening and morning times.
We are installing the same system in a couple months. What are your biggest loads that keep you from making it through the night with your single Powerwall?
That's the perfect strategy with 1 Powerwall. Adding some more kWh would be a nice addition to help lower your overall grid usage.
@ I am saving up for it.
@@leafnutz2341 The heat pump in heating mode ( our home is 3200 square feet), and refrigerators compressor, and water heater.
If you have any questions on Powerwall OR you’re a Solar/Powerwall owner yourself, leave them below in the comments!
Great video! Last year we got 18.5kw of solar and 4x PW3's. Around the same time we switched out our 25yr old AC for a heat pump and got an induction cooktop in an effort to get as much gas out of our house as possible. Most of the year we never really touch the grid. It's times like this week with near freezing temps and a heat pump that pulls about 8kw that really runs down the PW's quickly. We definitely make it through peak times, but I usually have to charge from the grid with Super-off-peak overnight to make it through the morning peak time before the sun is up. Most the time I just charge to 40% to make it through the morning peak, but these cold days with the sun coming up late, I charge to 55%. I've never come close to needing the grid from about 6am-midnight except for extremely cloudy days. This is in Tucson and we also have 2 electric cars that charge at least 90% on solar.
Love it! Thanks for sharing the details. 4 Powerwalls is a beast of a system. Ya know, there’s only one problem with the system though…you didn’t get it from me 😉 just kidding. Glad to hear it’s working great!
After grid failure and then recovering, code required a 5 minute delay before Solar energy can be sent to the grid. Does PW3 comply with this requirement. How do I test this feature?
Hmm, I've never heard of this before. I'd have to imagine if the utility and AHJ approved everything for installation and power on, then it's all good to go. I don't know of a setting in Tesla's software that would automate this.
I think the cybertruck's value mostly comes from the fact that it's nine powerwalls even if I never drive it again having that thing in my driveway is invaluable I can't wait to do testing on my home with 3 Power walls and then plug in the Cyber truck and now you have 11 and then when the extra battery comes out it's closer to 15
That's an amazing setup. Tons of kWh!
So if I’m adding a Powerwall 3 to my existing Enphase solar array, I’m limited only to a Gateway (and no Tesla Backup switch)?
Initially yes, but since this video’s upload the backup switch can now be used on an AC-coupled system (add-on).
I just installed the 37kw Point Guard system at my house. So far so good. App is better than I thought it was going to be.
This is the kind of real-world feedback I love to hear. Thanks for sharing!
How do I set this up, for some home Bitcoin mining properly?
I don’t think you’d need to do anything special. A bitcoin miner would use electricity just like any other appliance in your home. You’d just need to factor in the additional energy consumed by it for proper sizing.
Should I install a backup power inlet box (for a gas generator) before or after a powerwall 3 install? If/when it’s cloudy and my solar is useless (and my Powerwall is empty), could i run a gas generator to power the house? What other equipment would I need?
Honestly, I'd consult with a local installer on it as they may have different preferences on how it's all done depending on your situation. I think generators just complicate everything with the Powerwall system IMO. I'd rather use that money towards an additional Powerwall to expand capacity. Here's more info directly from Tesla on generator integration though: www.tesla.com/support/energy/powerwall/learn/combining-systems
@ I agree it would be easier to have multiple Powerwalls but in a sense I’m hedging my bets with the availability of gasoline and solar power.
@@jchao003 That's fair. I see what ya mean. It's definitely doable, just going to come down to the preference of the installer & possibly even your specific jurisdiction.
@ Right, thanks for your insight. Plus, with a short 15-year lifespan, solar panels and battery backup systems require pricey installations/replacements.
i live in cali and our base rate is like .35 so value is much higher because it’s 2x more expensive
Yeah in CA, it's a no brainer. Energy rates are wild out there.
I've been looking at the Sigenergy (PointGuard) system in the UK. I have a 3 phase house, so the Tesla Powerwall doesn't provide a suitable solution. With regards to Sigenergy capacity, I believe you can stack 6 x 8Kw packs per stack on the Sigenergy, providing 48kW rather than the max you quoted? Furthermore it states you can add multiple stacks in parallel, so presumably is effectively unlimited, albeit each stack would presumably operate independently each with it's own inverter?
While they a very similar product, there are some nuances and differences between Sigenergy's option and PointGuard's option. Max capacity is one of them. You are correct that in either case, each stack would operate in parallel, independent of each other, with it's own inverter from my understanding.
Hi. You didn't cover anything about 3-phase powered homes. I understand the PW3 still only handles single phase and therefore can't do whole home backup if your home has 3-phase, only able to cover one of the three. Should I simply go with a different system or is there a solution using PW3s?
I haven't done a lot of homework on 3-phase as it's not something we ever run into on the residential side here in the US.
@@ZachSolarOK thanks. It's becoming increasingly common here in Australia, with a home builder that I'm considering using, including it as standard for all new builds. 220-240V 3-phase is particularly useful when it comes to charging a couple of EVs at home... A lot faster than your typical 110V in the US.
I have enphase tech.... i like it a lot.
Good to hear! Enphase makes a great product
Great explanation of the Tesla App. Do you have something similar with NEM 3.0 settings? Thx
Thanks! And not yet. I will be doing a new video on the Tesla app later this year for 2025. That's something I could include. I believe Tesla has all of the rates automatically set and available to select for the major CA utilities.
I can't imagine Tesla continuing it's 8 year battery warranty if used in this manner.
That's a good point. I can expect that supercharging for free to then power your home with Powershare is almost certainly going to be a no-no too.
Whats with the calibration mode getting caught in a loop? Glitch in their software or something? The app will tell you to cycle batteries and breakers at the box. Tech told me don't it will put them back to factory default. Finally all 3 back taking a charge. Took me 3 days on the grid to get it out of the calibration mode. Have no idea if they calibrated or not haa. PW3's 2024/Nevada
@@redoc69 I’ve never had to do a calibration personally so I’m not sure. If it’s getting caught in a loop it’s definitely a software glitch. That’s frustrating though!
@@ZachSolar Pretty sure it's built in the system and starts automatically ~2 months after power up per Tesla rep and verified by Netzero. My 1st kW was produced 11/14/24- PTO 1/8/25 (sad) and it started calibration 1/13/25 @ ~ 22:00 and ended 1/16/25 @ 11: am. I could see on Netzero something was wrong and I contacted Tesla. They said it should take less then 24 hrs.. So after I called the second day they said they would monitored it and fixed the problem. My problem 100 kWh off the grid for those 3 day. @@ZachSolar I does it automatically after about 2 months of power up. It will stay in a calibration loop and Tesla is aware for the problem. I called after 2 days and they said they would monitor it in the morning. It went back on "online" at 11:00 the next day and started to take a charge.
Around 3:40. I don't have 'three dots'. WTH.
Try going to your Powerwall site on the app, then settings, vehicle charging, and scroll to bottom to select vehicle for charge on solar. See if that works.
@@ZachSolar turns out (surprise) I'm an idiot. My Tesla Solar System hasn't been turned on by the local utility nor has it been registered with the utility or with Tesla... so, DUH on me!
@@TomUlcak lol, you’re just excited to get things rollin’. It happens 🙃
good explainer. thank you
Thanks, Moe. Appreciate it
I have a powerwall 3 and a Cybertruck. Was told 3 weeks ago the Gateway 2 is still not working for powershre.
@@bertwright1790 it’ll be compatible once Tesla releases the update for it. Every Powerwall system will be. Not sure when, but they say 2025
You left out that customers who want the Powerwall 3 may have to wait up to a year to have one installed according to Tesla.
I can't speak for Tesla's timelines. They've always been notoriously slow as an installer.
Had a grid outage in California. 16 hours. That day I signed my contract with sun for three Tesla pw3’s. Total cost 31,900 including installation. I can’t wait. Our neighborhood has frequent power outages plus I could use it for my peak time from 1600 to 2100.
That’s a fantastic price. Is that installed with the backup switch or gateway?
Don’t know it just says all brackets, wiring, etc. included. Do you have any suggestions? I have a central inverter
Nah it doesn’t make a difference. It’s all the same at the end of the day. I was just curious.
Sunrun will install a battery system on your home (the "System"). which will include: Battery(ies) (store electricity): 3 Powerwall 3 1707000-xx-y (AC Coupled) battery(ies) Associated brackets, wiring, and electrical equipment (junction boxes, etc.) TOTAL CONTRACT PRICE The Total Contract Price for the System, including applicable taxes, is $31,900.00.
I installed a powerwall but the weather where I am located is a coastal area and it rains a lot so sunny days are not full days and my PW does not charge to capacity daily. I want to charge it fully but right now it says I am exporting some power but I dont want to do that. Can i turn off the export function? And will this affect me in any way?
If the export function is OFF, it will curtail the solar once the battery is nearing 100%. Are you on time-based mode or self-powered?
@ZachSolar I am on self powered..
@@lovablebigt Very odd. If in self-powered, the battery should take priority over exporting. My only other thought is to set it to a higher backup reserve to force it want to hit that benchmark. Sorry, it's hard to say without seeing it so I'm probably not too helpful.
Great video, here in the U.K. there’s a much better use case for getting one to charge at night (7 pence a Kw) compared to day rate (26 pence a kw). I could achieve £1000 savings a year and can get one installed for £8000.
Thank you! And yep, that is a great opportunity to take advantage of. Are most installs in UK solar + storage?
Hi Zach, I’m installing a 14 kW solar system with 28 panels, a Powerwall 3, and a Tesla Gateway 2. I currently have a 2019 Model 3 and a 2023 Model Y and a reservation for Cybertruck which I will not buy for a couple of years. Should I be concerned that my installer is planning to use a Gateway 2 instead of Gateway 3 for future-proofing, like power sharing? Thanks!
No concerns at all. If you have a Powerwall system of any kind, it is compatible with Powershare (assuming the vehicle is). 5:44
Great knowledge. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
That widget is not available for android
@@rlee4227 I know, I was shocked they didn’t include it for Android.
Why was the solar panel not charging a battery when there was an outage?
@@Chris-em9uw it’s a safety measure. If the battery is >90% during an outage, it will shut down the solar and discharge from the battery until below that ~90% threshold. This is to protect the battery from overcharging since solar generation can fluctuate so quickly.
@ my batteries are at zero due to these my land fires we have in Southern California, but the solar panels are not charging the batteries now. Do you have any clue why
@@Chris-em9uw shoot. My best guess is that they are fully discharged and there’s not even enough energy to get the solar online. Did they hit 0% while offgrid?
@ yea
What happen now
Maxeon 7 modules at 445w look really nice. Canadian Solar TOPHiKu6 at 470w with a high efficiency too.
I agree, both of these options look great. Impressive numbers.
Thank you for your informative video. 50% of the installers I have talked to in San Diego are clueless. But I have one more question. I have 9.75 kw of solar panels (30x325w) and a 10kw Solar edge (SE10000-US) inverter. I want to add battery back up with only one Tesla 3 battery. The Tesla system sizing manual states that for AC coupled connection the max power is 7.68 kw. So this means I cannot install just one battery. I need 2 or I need to reduce my 10kw system down correct?
No problem! Happy to assist. Yeah, you’d have to go with 2 Powerwalls due to that 7.68 kW cap. You could also go with 1 Powerwall and just downsize your SolarEdge inverter to a 7600 or re-string the panels to a DC-coupled design using Powerwall’s inverter. Your 9.75 kW system would be completely fine on a 7600. If you need help getting a quote from an installer who knows what they’re doing down there, just shoot me an email at infozachsolar@gmail.com and I can help.
