I’m gathering quotes for solar + battery for my house (you’re not local to me, sorry!). A couple of them are suggesting panels with Enphase micro inverters along with a Tesla Powerwall. Aren’t the Enphase micro inverters redundant since the Powerwall has a built in inverter? Can’t they just go straight from the panels to the battery without the need for micro inverters? Seems like a big unnecessary cost unless I’m missing something.
The microinverters are redundant in this case. I’d ask them why they recommend that over using the Powerwall’s inverter. Curious their response. Without knowing more about your situation and their quotes, it’s hard to say the logic here.

That's crazy that Enphase would take up that much room. My LuxpowerTek 12K LXP, mounted over my StackRack (20kWh) batteries, is only 32 inches wide and in my garage.
The PW3 is so popular because it’s the cheapest. It’s really that simple. It’s one of the least feature-rich and really does promote a closed ecosystem. The best battery, though, is easily the aPower2, which should be out in the next month or so.
My local company quoted me $26k USD to install two FranklinWH batteries and I thought that was a smoking deal because other companies quote me around $33k for the same setup. Looks like they were trying to clear out inventory for the new aPower2, which I must say, is going be a good competition against the Powerwall 3. Just gotta wait and see how much it'll cost.
@@BMWguy206 $26k is pretty insane for two. If I was offered that right now, I’d take it instead of waiting out for the new one. I’m getting quoted $19k for one.
Over in this part of the world it is *probably* Fox ESS at #1 (EP11 and EP5 batteries probably the cheapest per kWh of the main contenders, ballpark is $300/kWh excluding inverter, installation, etc), GivEnergy #2 (ballpark $400/kWh excluding inverter, installation, ...), the PW2, PW3, SolarEdge and Enphase are considered a premium / expensive offering with a very high cost per kWh, and a fairly small market share. Never even heard of Franklin. The market is different because firstly the grid is reliable so people generally don't care or even think about home backup, and given that air-con is basically non-existent in a domestic setting, the load-start is mostly irrelevant, so a midrange inverter is fine for those people who do want home backup. Secondly hybrid inverters dominate, with a minority of installations using on-roof electronics. The PW3 is likely to be more successful than the PW2 in the long run due to that, but currently the price is much too high compared to the competition, even after you take account of the integrated inverter.
@@ZachSolar The UK, the EU is similar although GivEnergy is mainly a UK supplier so doesn't have a big presence elsewhere. Energy costs are high (probably similar to California, in the region of 35c/kWh), so the main use of batteries is time-shifting production to peak export rates + evening usage, and similarly time-shifting imports from cheap periods to use at more expensive times of the day.
Regarding Tesla's market share, they’ll be their own worst enemy. I've heard the PW3 isn't even available right now, and their solar batteries are competing with their car batteries-with the car batteries winning.
I installed a PW3 system on Sept.9 in NC and it handled a week of power outage from hurricain Helene without going below 55% charge overnight, and fully charging by noon from solar the next day.
