I am actually in the process of adding additional solar to my house with Tesla, and the other company I am looking at is using the Enphase batteries. This is a great video to watch to help me with my decision. My existing solar with battery was installed by Sunpower, so interoperabiltiy is a big question. Be really interested in a video about how to monitor both systems from one app (especially since Sunpowers app will no longer support soon)
Thanks! Good to hear this video was helpful. With either Tesla or Enphase, they would become your primary app for monitoring. It’d show all of the pertinent metrics of both your existing solar systems and new battery system.
We are lookikg to buy a home with solar already installed (owned or paid at closing) are there any videos out there for buyers of homes with solar already installed? What questions to ask, what to look out for etc
That’d be a great video to have. It’s definitely not “one size fits all” since there are so many variables involved. From when the install happened, who installed it, what equipment was used, financing type, utility agreement, and so on. Usually all of the critical information can be answered by getting a copy of their installation agreement (whatever they signed when they went solar) and a couple recent utility bills with solar. Thank you..very helpful... Now recently..Tesla has stopped supplying Powerwall 3s in certain situations... as well one reliable installer says there are issues with the powerwall 3 and tesla is backed up for several months... can you comment on that ?

I’m curious what others have ran into. As far as the delays, yes, they are seeing some delays right now due to the product demand. But Tesla will catch up. I’d rather wait a bit longer and have the battery I really want.
What are your thoughts on Tesla’s built in inverter failing? Will it require a whole new Powerwall or is the inverter repairable with some disassembling?
It’s definitely bad if the inverter fails :) Tesla has proven a very successful track record of inverters with their batteries, PV, and vehicles. I haven’t confirmed if the inverter can be repaired separately.
@@ZachSolar I asked that question of a UK installer this morning, he seemed to think it wouldn't be as it's all in one unit. It's not listed in the spares list I can find but early days. Tesla I think guarentee 80% capacity at 10 years when the warranty expires so hopefully the battery would be good for longer but if the inverter fails then it could mean a big bill, but perhaps there'll be newer, better, cheaper technology by then.
@@SurreyAlan I heard the battery is sealed in a way that the inverter can’t be swapped. I suppose that’s the trade off you get since it’s water resistant to 20+ inches of water.

@@tweeds638 I appreciate that! Good question. I’ve heard the DC expansion packs will cost about $1,000 less per unit. Then likely even less once you start to factor in additional labor savings and such. I’m going to put together a video on the DC packs in the near future.
I have an older Sunpower system (10-11 years old) with a Sunpower string inverter. Rated at 5400 DC Watts (STC) Still working fine. Can this single inverter system be coupled into a Powerwall 3? I am California NEM "0" so I don't want to change the Solar system right now. No longer worrying about a warrantee void! I understand that I would have to use a Tesla Gateway (at least for now). I have a 125 AMP feed to the house. Would I need to go to 200 AMPS?
You could likely be fine with the 125A service due to a power control features (including the “panel limits feature”) within the Tesla Powerwall. I would consider an upgrade to a 200A as it would probably be a nice upgrade. I’d ask a local installer their thoughts as well.
Unless I didn't understand you correctly, I'm not sure I can wrap my head around how three enphase 5 p batteries installed cost about 30 grand, when each battery is only 3k?
12:28 Definitely not $30k. I'm just relaying a cost range that I see in the US market. It's important to note too, there's quite a bit more to a battery installation than just the batteries. Plenty of cheaper options out there though.
I’m in the solar industry. Cost of a PW3 installed can be a pretty broad range depending on the scope of your project, electrical work needed and where you live. Labor and ancillary costs are a large part of the costs.
That was very informative. Often other videos just tell you how great Enphase should be compared with multiple units to make things fair, without really emphasising the actual extra cost; which is substantial. Someone could likely get 2 PW batteries for the price of Enphase's 3. I'm not sure if the batteries are good value just yet when compared to installing solar or just paying the power bill as it comes in, in the US. I'm in Australia and already had solar (it is MUCH cheaper to install solar here than in the US), so Emphases eco system was not helpful. Likewise, Tesla was not offering LFP at the time so I went Franklin which had a special deal at the time. I was lucky to also get a rebate from the government if I purchased within the 3 to 4 month window that it was offered for. I was very luck to only pay about $7,000 (AU) installed after the rebate which is about $4,758 (US). Otherwise, I likely would have gone for the Powerwall 3 if it was available.
@@ZachSolar The performance has been really good, it charges up, then empties during the night. It saves about $5 a day in electricity (due to expensive peak electricity). My only issue would be the app software and its use of the battery. It needs to be a bit more user friendly to set up "Time of Use", and in Australia it seems to have less options than in the US for setting up priorates of how the house is powered (grid, solar, or battery). If left on just normal usage, then it is fine, with solar doing its work during the day, then the battery pitches in when the solar is not enough. If i put it on "time of use" setting, all solar power generated goes to the grid, and the battery runs the house by itself until depleted (which makes no sense). The priorities are by default are backwards- the battery runs the house first, then the solar if it's not enough. I have let Franklin know of the issue. It does not seem to be a problem over there. I'm just waiting for an app update. But this aside, the battery works really well.

Thank you for the information. I’m putting Tesla power three in. I will also be purchasing an electric car most likely Tesla Juniper y. I would like the car to act like an extended battery for supplemental power.. is that being considered and how would I do that?
Thanks! What you’re talking about is bidirectional charging and Tesla calls it “Powershare”. Right now, it’s only available for the Cybertruck but I expect them to roll it out to more cars in the future to expand their ecosystem. You do need to either install your Powerwalls with a Backup Switch or a Gateway 3V, plus have the Universal Wall Connector to ensure it’s able to be used in the future. Google “Tesla Powershare” for more info.
Super helpful. Two questions: Does the enphase battery install require a separate breaker box and rewiring for the circuits you want to back up on power outage? Do you know if they will adopt the meter backup switch like Tesla is doing? Thanks!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful. 1) Yes they do. You will have to relocate all backed up loads in a new panel, even with “whole home backup”. 2) I haven’t heard anything on something like this. But I wouldn’t be surprised if companies like Enphase create a similar solution to compete.
The Tesla backup switch is not approved by my utility. My suspicion too is that, given the current political environment in Washington state, my utility is more unlikely now to accommodate Tesla given its relation to Musk.
I've got a 9.5 kWh SolarEdge battery paired with 10.6 kW of panels in Arizona. The battery will never pay for itself, but it makes me feel good as it lets me avoid importing from the grid during high tariff hours. My annual bill is about $400 worth of off peak electricity and $400 worth of monthly fees.Chasing down that last $400 of imported off grid electricity is unfortunately not cost effective. Even if I didn't have the battery, I wouldn't be importing that much. So far this year, my battery has supplied 1600 kWh. Max summer rates are about 25 cents per kWh Max winter rates are about 15 cents per kWh. So at most, the battery is saving me $400 per year. More typically would be $280 to $300 as some of that battery usage is during nominal 10 cents per kWh rates. So paying off an $8000 battery will take a very long time, if ever.
That's a great system set-up. And true, if you're looking at it strictly from an economic standpoint.. a battery may not make as much sense as solar only options. But if on-peak rates, and demand charges continue to increase and become a big part of the utilities rate structure, the battery will offer a lot more value long-term. More grid independence is better IMO. Thanks for watching!
Batteries are meant for unpredictable times during power outages it’s like insurance. I know millions dollar homes that will buy your battery from you for nearly 50% more than what you paid for. During outages I noticed here in FL people are willing to pay anything to have the lights on especially homeowners that have solar panels and now want batteries because when the power went out the solar didn’t work because of grid safety.
@@solargod3671 In the Phoenix area, power outages are rare and short lived. If hurricanes and weather storms bring power outages for several days at a time, then yes, the battery backup with solar to recharge it everyday would be desirable. Might as well get an EV with a 75 kWh battery to help run the house too. I think only the EV pickup trucks are able to do this at the moment.
Not using Bluetooth, but you can connect to the Tesla Gateway directly using two different ways (that I've found) 1) Connect to your Tesla's WiFi and go to 192.168.91.1. Your log-in will be your email on file and your password will be the last 5 of your Gateway's WiFi password. It will try to get you to download and use their Tesla One app. Just click "upgrade later". 2) Use a 3rd party app like "Netzero Tesla" and do it that way. It's under Diagnostics on the app then just connect to Gateway.
If you want to backup just one of the 200A panels, then it’d be business as usual for either battery. Partial home backup installation. If you want to backup both 200A panels, you’d need either 2 Gateways (Tesla) or 2 System Controllers (Enphase). 1 per 200A panel.
It’s hard to argue with the value of a Tesla Powerwall. Unfortunately they weren’t offered in my area when I had my solar system installed 2 years ago. So I have an Enphase based solar system. No batteries yet. I own an EV. I’m thinking I’ll wait until vehicle to load backup is integrated into Enphase (which they say they will be rolling out soon). Then, I would likely just get one small Enphase battery, for when my car wasn’t connected to the house, and use my vehicles battery to augment it. My car has a 77 kWh battery in it. That’s a lot of storage. Why not leverage what I already own? This scenerio is one use case where Enphase may have an edge. Otherwise, Tesla looks hard to beat.
That's a very solid strategy. Bidirectional charging will be an exciting addition to everything in the future. Good choice on your system. Enphase makes a great product!
@@PapaPiggie Powerwall is not going to be generator friendly. You’d have to install it separately of the generator with a MTS. Enphase supports direct generator integration though.
How big of a solar system can a single 5P handle. I really just want to keep my refrigerator running and have the ability to charge the battery with my existing solar with enphase micro inverters
@TurreTuntematon I’m mainly just wanting to be able to access the energy created by my solar panels during a grid down situation. Once that happens I would much rather spend $5000 on more solar than on more battery.
@@Energy.Theory look at the price! you could buy two, double the cap of PW3, and still have money to buy an EG4 18k. Enphase and Tesla batteries are designed to increase profit for these companies.
@@ZachSolar, I do not have a system yet. However, I would say don't be googled, as that is what Tesla is doing. They are betting on you not doing any meaningful comparison and that you just want someone to come in and sell you a system.
@@finder2267 what service entrance does your home have? Have you looked at the simplicity of Tesla’s back up switch? That is a lot less work and material than using any of EG4s products. How big of a system would you be getting? I looked into eg4 and what worries me is the lack of support for the product. Tesla and Enphase are billion dollar companies. I see the appeal in EG4 but I can’t imagine they have the same level of distribution, support, and engineering the larger players have.
Enphase seems to better integrate standby generator control where the standby generator can be used to recharge 5P batteries. The Tesla PowerWall 3 can be recharged by solar panels. I am at a complete loss why Tesla can’t come up with a charging solution that DC charges a PowerWall 3, as if it is a solar panel power source and by bypassing the PowerWall inverter that is used to supply AC power to the house. This is a major downside for buying a PowerWall. Elon needs to help advocate for an ecosystem solution that better supports a high shade market where solar panels just aren’t an economically viable solution. If Enphase can do it, so can a tech genius that can catch a rocket with chopsticks.
Yeah I think for Tesla it's certainly something they could do, just doesn't seem to be a feature they have interest in integrating at this time. That could change though!
@@ZachSolar If only I could count on not needing new hardware to get the feature. Enphase though is not warts. Their current integration of the Span Smart Panel is, at best, a stopgap kluge. Enphase is also behind Tesla on deploying bi-directional charging that can augment home power resilience, if Tesla isn’t quite there yet either. Combined, Enphase and Tesla could come up with an elegant ecosystem of energy based solutions. Maybe the engineers that developed the original iPhone ecosystem at Apple could help.
Much better and less expensive solutions out there. Such as EG4 Wallmounts. Triple the capacity at the same price. Absolutely ridiculous pricing where you're just buying the name. I have 18K inverter and 2 indoor wallmounts. Couldn't be happier.

teslas still not using 280ah lifepo4 cells. probably 100ah cells. expensive. you can make your own home batteries using 280ah cells for 60$/kwh which is insane. can stack 8 of them inside of a 40mm ammo can if you get the threaded cell types (older). 24v 8kwh battery for 500$ lol. just buy a 200$ inverter and its like 1/20th the price of tesla with no app.
The professional systems automatically disconnect you from the grid. Then create its own grid so your solar comes back on. Without that you can’t recharge your battery from solar. Which is the whole point. Currently I have a 10kw solar system and a 8kwh diy backup battery. I wish there was a good diy way to get my micro inverters to turn on so I could use solar in a grid down situation.

I have enphase solar panels. 26 panels. Can I combine this with PW3 for my battery backup?
Yes, Absolutely. I have a video coming out in the next week or so covering that topic exactly.

Can we confirm the chemistry of the PW3?
It has been confirmed by Tesla representatives directly. Tesla has not advertised it for whatever strange reason.
Tesla doesn’t advertise the chemistry so they can change it if they want. That is my expectation at least.

What do you do when you have two two hundred panels?
If you want to backup just one of the 200A panels, then it’d be business as usual for either battery. Partial home backup installation.
If you want to backup both 200A panels, you’d need either 2 Gateways (Tesla) or 2 System Controllers (Enphase). 1 per 200A panel.
It’s hard to argue with the value of a Tesla Powerwall. Unfortunately they weren’t offered in my area when I had my solar system installed 2 years ago. So I have an Enphase based solar system. No batteries yet. I own an EV. I’m thinking I’ll wait until vehicle to load backup is integrated into Enphase (which they say they will be rolling out soon). Then, I would likely just get one small Enphase battery, for when my car wasn’t connected to the house, and use my vehicles battery to augment it. My car has a 77 kWh battery in it. That’s a lot of storage. Why not leverage what I already own? This scenerio is one use case where Enphase may have an edge. Otherwise, Tesla looks hard to beat.
That's a very solid strategy. Bidirectional charging will be an exciting addition to everything in the future. Good choice on your system. Enphase makes a great product!
I have the same plan. Enphase solar system + my EV battery + Enphase bidirectional charger coming out first half 2025 😊
After being talked into enphase micro inverters I feel screwed trying to add batteries
@@PapaPiggie I wouldn’t feel that way at all. Enphase makes a great inverter and you still have a lot of battery options to integrate with them.
Don’t. Enphase makes a superior inverter, the weakest point in the whole system.

@@PapaPiggie Powerwall is not going to be generator friendly. You’d have to install it separately of the generator with a MTS. Enphase supports direct generator integration though.

How big of a solar system can a single 5P handle. I really just want to keep my refrigerator running and have the ability to charge the battery with my existing solar with enphase micro inverters
Eh, there's not really a realistic system cap for Enphase's batteries (even just 1 5P) since they can use PCS to make everything compatible.

I’m mainly just wanting to be able to access the energy created by my solar panels during a grid down situation. Once that happens I would much rather spend $5000 on more solar than on more battery.

@@ZachSolar, I do not have a system yet. However, I would say don't be googled, as that is what Tesla is doing. They are betting on you not doing any meaningful comparison and that you just want someone to come in and sell you a system.
@@finder2267 what service entrance does your home have? Have you looked at the simplicity of Tesla’s back up switch? That is a lot less work and material than using any of EG4s products. How big of a system would you be getting?
I looked into eg4 and what worries me is the lack of support for the product. Tesla and Enphase are billion dollar companies. I see the appeal in EG4 but I can’t imagine they have the same level of distribution, support, and engineering the larger players have.
Enphase seems to better integrate standby generator control where the standby generator can be used to recharge 5P batteries. The Tesla PowerWall 3 can be recharged by solar panels. I am at a complete loss why Tesla can’t come up with a charging solution that DC charges a PowerWall 3, as if it is a solar panel power source and by bypassing the PowerWall inverter that is used to supply AC power to the house. This is a major downside for buying a PowerWall. Elon needs to help advocate for an ecosystem solution that better supports a high shade market where solar panels just aren’t an economically viable solution. If Enphase can do it, so can a tech genius that can catch a rocket with chopsticks.
Yeah I think for Tesla it's certainly something they could do, just doesn't seem to be a feature they have interest in integrating at this time. That could change though!
@@ZachSolar If only I could count on not needing new hardware to get the feature. Enphase though is not warts. Their current integration of the Span Smart Panel is, at best, a stopgap kluge. Enphase is also behind Tesla on deploying bi-directional charging that can augment home power resilience, if Tesla isn’t quite there yet either. Combined, Enphase and Tesla could come up with an elegant ecosystem of energy based solutions. Maybe the engineers that developed the original iPhone ecosystem at Apple could help.

Much better and less expensive solutions out there. Such as EG4 Wallmounts. Triple the capacity at the same price. Absolutely ridiculous pricing where you're just buying the name. I have 18K inverter and 2 indoor wallmounts. Couldn't be happier.

Go with an EG4 Hybrid inverter and an EG4 14.3 batteries for much cheaper.
I’ve heard great things about EG4. We don’t ever run into them from the residential installer side of things. Tesla & Enphase dominate the market.

teslas still not using 280ah lifepo4 cells. probably 100ah cells. expensive. you can make your own home batteries using 280ah cells for 60$/kwh which is insane. can stack 8 of them inside of a 40mm ammo can if you get the threaded cell types (older). 24v 8kwh battery for 500$ lol. just buy a 200$ inverter and its like 1/20th the price of tesla with no app.
The professional systems automatically disconnect you from the grid. Then create its own grid so your solar comes back on. Without that you can’t recharge your battery from solar. Which is the whole point.
Currently I have a 10kw solar system and a 8kwh diy backup battery. I wish there was a good diy way to get my micro inverters to turn on so I could use solar in a grid down situation.
