The Ultimate Silent Hill 2 Retrospective
Releasing in 2001 Silent Hill 2 has cemented itself not only as one of the greatest horror titles of all time, but one of the greatest games in gaming. Despite it being obtuse at times, Silent Hill 2 is a game a lot of people have an extremely personal connection to it, myself included, and so I figured it deserved a video essay, however with the recent remake of Silent Hill 2: this was the perfect time to finally make the ultimate retrospective of Silent Hill 2

I’m 29. I remember when gaming was more about the players getting to experience what the developers slaved over computers had to offer. It was more about creating something for the players, leaving fun Easter eggs to show that there were humans behind the madness, and that there was a trust built between the marketing and packaging of the game and the player. But now… now companies have severed that trust and thrust more money into marketing and making as much money as possible over actually telling a story that means something and making a game that wanted to say something… Now every time you look at a trailer you’re paranoid it’s all fake bullshit to wind you in just to lie to your face AFTER you made the purchase. The thing you thought you were going to play turned out to be a underbaked horse shit experience that focused on flashy concepts over actually making a finished product. Now when you buy a game, you gotta worry if there’s some bullshit battle pass, loot box gambling system, or that it’s going to cost an arm and a leg just to have everything in the game that you want. We’ve become contempt on the idea of “Its just cosmetics, who cares?” and then letting companies charge 20 fucking dollars for a pixelated in-game skin that means jack shit. Pre-orders were a huge thing back then because of how companies could just promise you something to reel you in with FOMO bullshit, and now you bought a full-priced game just to find out they got their money and you got fucked. I just wanna see a cool game, go “Oh shit, this looks hype.”, buy it, then enjoy it or hate it. I don’t want to just ignore it completely because of mistrust or do 80 hours of research through everyone else’s opinion of the game just to NOT get it anyways because I saw more negative reviews than positive. Back when I was a kid, I’d be so excited to go to game stop, look at all the games available for me to buy, and then get some cheap shitty game I could afford just because it looked cool.

Born in 2003, currently 20 going on 21 and got both the PS1 and PS2 as my first consoles. I grew up during the 'golden age' of gaming where games didn't feel like such a chore to play. I started online gaming around 2011-2012 playing primarily shooter titles from Call of Duty and Battlfield (though I had already played the campaigns for previous titles). The main thing I noticed as the years progressed is that there was more and more monetization and add-on content for games than I cared to think about. Suddenly games became less about the experience and more about funneling players into making micro-transactions. Unfortunately, games like CoD: Advanced Warfare and Fortnite left a legacy of loot box gambling and the concept of the battle pass respectively. Online games nowadays try to give you "daily rewards" to incentivize you to keep your attention each day for long hours, so you get frustrated enough into buying something that may or may not make the experience easier. This, in my opinion, is what took the soul out of gaming. The other thing could be the fact that games have gotten a lot more political and began pushing more political narratives, which breaks that safe sense of escape from reality that gamers around my age and older usually crave because those are the memories we have associated to video games. Granted, I have changed too. I'm a college student who also works a job and often doesn't have time to play like I used to. I've have gotten out of being more competitive with games and have adopted a more casual style of play as a result. When I was in grade school, I could afford to play hours at a time but I'm just now realizing the responsibilities you must take on as an adult.

I grew up in the PS2 era, currently 25, I think gaming didn't change all that much as I know what I enjoy playing, I still have tons on fun with modern gaming, and even though some games are filled with micro transactions and P2W stuff, or when release comes, the product isn't even final, for the former, I just tend to avoid them, or progress slower/put some cash when I actually can, and for the latter, like it was the case for CP2077, I wait until it's patched enough for me to play decently.

2:45:45 Actually, you can get all 8 endings on just 2 playthroughs, you just need to keep a save in the hotel & use the items in your inventory to influence what ending you get. I did this for the platinum trophy on PS5, took me about 20 hours total. My first run exploring every single nook & cranny I could, the second just plowing through the game (to get the "faster than fog" trophy) Maria, Leave, & In Water can be done on the first playthrough, I wanted to see if they changed anything for Maria so I always checked up on her & never inspected any of the items in my inventory until the very end. Then Rebirth, Dog, & UFO on NewGame+ (for the "party like it's 2001" trophy). Bliss & Stillness aren't tied to a trophy but are also possible on the NG+ run as long as you remember to pick up the items needed for them, getting the new item(s) for Stillness will override Rebirth though

I’m 25 and I grew up with mostly Nintendo games. I just feel like nowadays the gaming industry is not geared towards making fun games that people enjoy. It’s just geared towards “how can we squeeze as much money as possible out of our customers?” Every company wants that magical formula of a successful game. Instead of innovating on ideas and doing things that are original and neat they just look at what successful, copy it and call it a day. To an extent the gaming industry has always done it. But back in the day there were less games and therefore less ideas had already been done. there’s a reason there are whole essays on resident evil clones. It started all the way back then but nowadays in a gaming market that is so saturated with more and more and more and more of the same thing it’s just so much more noticeable. Also, I feel like one reason gaming is less enjoyable for me is that as time goes on casual gamers are shoved more and more to the side. They’re not seen as a part of the legitimate market, they’re just seen as suckers that companies can fiddle with. I see a lot of this elitism around specifically gaming difficulties, and the way people play games. I have never been somebody who is very good at shooting games or action games because my hand eye coordination is legitimately terrible. Like I have had a doctor comment on how strange it is that I’m so young and it’s so bad. Sometimes I feel very unwelcome in the gaming space purely because I generally play things like Animal Crossing and Style Savvy. it’s like I’m not seen as a legitimate gamer just because I don’t have the ability to get through a game like Resident Evil. And it’s not like I don’t want to. I absolutely love horror games. They have amazing narratives. But it’s just too difficult for me to make it through. If I have $60 to spend on a game, I’m going to spend it on something I can enjoy rather than have sit collecting dust. I specifically remember playing the Wii a lot as a child and it was an incredibly popular system. Yet as time goes on, I see more and more people hating on it just because of motion controls and I’m not saying it wasn’t sometimes janky because it could be.. But we have games that come out today with controls that are absolutely horrendous. At the end of the day because the Wii was more child friendly it’s hated on simply because of it. Bad game design has always been a problem in the gaming industry but the second you have a game that is geared towards everybody being able to play it, it becomes a hell of a lot more of an issue than it would have been otherwise. I also think that because online stores have become so popular , companies don’t feel like they have to release full games anymore. if you wanted to include some thing on your game, you had to figure out how to get it there from the start. We get less content these days, purely because companies want a short of a timeline as possible, and anything extra just seen as an opportunity for DLC. I also feel like the shift to online games and subscription services has done a lot of harm as well . I refuse to buy a game if it requires online service and I have to pay in order to get online service. Especially if it doesn’t include an off-line single player mode. I live 13 hours away from any of my friends that I had in high school. The fact that I am now required to pay for a service that used to come free on every other Nintendo console makes me irrationally angry.
