SSD due to multiple Cholesteatomas (18 Mastoidectomy's between both ears over the last 30 years)- just had my abutment surgery for my Ponto Baha yesterday, but with with my air hearing aids, me and my doc discovered, that when not being acted on an outside source (IE intentionally cupping the hearing aid to cause it) it was due to a loose pickup mic, getting close to the plastic and retransmitting the audio it just sent in an endless loop, Given that the tech between the BAHA and Air hearing aids is not dissimilar, it would be worth looking into.

Couple of questions ... I'm also deaf in one (right) ear (because of surgery for removal of vestibular schwannoma - I had ~50% reduced hearing because of the tumor itself, but after the surgery there's no hearing left at all - just tinnitus). So I'm researching the options for some bone conduction driver that I can put near my good (left) ear and feed with a signal (ie mic) from my deaf right side, so that I overcome the head-shadow effect you get when one side of your head is deaf. I focused on bone conduction devices because they leave the only good ear open to hear normally, but just add the missing sounds thru the bone (I wonder if with time my brain would learn to differentiate sounds coming thru my ear and thru the bone-conduction, and perhaps it would even improve my currently non-existing sound source orientation). So my questions: - first what's the rough cost of a good BAHA device? - Have you compared bone-anchored vs skin-touching devices, if so - how do they compare? - Also if you have an idea what are good bone--conduction transducers (aka exciters or drivers) specs, and who produces such devices on reasonable price (those hearing aid companies imho are more in the racketeering business, than in the hearing aid business :/ )

I just saw your video. I have a Baha 6 with one setting where my audiologist disabled the "smart" feedback manager. Ironically that actually helped reduce feedback for me in some situations (like when I play guitar). It seems almost like the active feedback manager was overcompensating and feeding off its own reactions. I have no idea if that will help your situation, but you could ask and try next time you see your audiologist. Good luck!

I NEED ONE right away! I am a hearing director working with a cast of DHH actors. I know how important it is for Deaf and Hard of Hearing folks to see not only the mouth, but the entire face! The link you shared is not valid. Do you have any updates about where I can get one as soon as possible? Or maybe you know of other masks I could order that are all clear like this, not just with a window for the mouth. I have been searching the internet for weeks and finding nothing. Because I am immunocompromised, I must still mask in public, so I have a huge dilemma. I need to provide accessible communication for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Thank you for this review!

Great, thorough review. Thank you for the information. Your deafness is far more advanced than mine. I am unilaterally deaf in my right ear. I am sure the quality of sound is much more noticeable to you. I do have some complaints on my BAHA 5. Mostly in that it sounds tinny or like someone is talking through a can. I appreciate it though, as I can hear much better wearing it and it keeps my own volume in check. I am not yelling at people anymore. I have been wanting to check into getting a BAHA 6 for the better sound quality and I was under the impression that it would be able to connect directly to an android just like Apple does on the 5. It sounds like you still have to use the mini mic. though. Can you clarify if I will be able to stream direct?

    • @LetThereBeEars
      @LetThereBeEars 2 місяці тому

Thanks for subscribing and watching my videos! I've been impressed by the streaming quality of the BAHA 6. I can wirelessly connect to my android phone and stream music/podcasts on the fly without using an extra accessory like a phone clip or a mini mic. I can easily toggle on the BAHA smart app the volume in and around me. I can even mute my surroundings so music is all I hear.

Depends on the type, Cochlear Baha I believe has 2 options one for magnetic (Similar to their Cochlear implant but specific to the BAHA, which is magnetic and is clamped together via strong magnet under (the permanently implanted portion) and over the skin (the hearing aid/transmitter portion) ) and then there is the Abutment, which is typically a 4mm punch through the skin to the bone to make the conduction point. i personally chose the abutment for stability and future replacements (as the setting post in the center can be switched out should i ever move from Ponto to Cochlear or future companies that provide options. as the abutment bolt is standardized in the medical field and even it is was not, would be simple enough to have commissioned from appropriate machinist shop with fairly simple specs)

Thank you for this video, I've just received a demo of the baha 6 this week. I am single-sided deaf in my right ear (10% hearing).. I find that the sound isn't very good compared to my shokz headphones. Eventually I'm thinking of fitting an abutment, even though in 20% of cases there are problems and I suffer from a lot of allergies.

I just upgraded yesterday to the 6Max from the 5 and ironically I find the complete opposite: I always had terrible feedback with the 5 but a lot less (so far) with the 6. The issue I believe was because I had the 5 set to the maximum volume by my audiologist (prior to this I wasn’t getting as much feedback but I just couldn’t hear much sound with it). I did use the BAHA5 Power for a while and that was brilliant but I just didn’t like the weight and size of it on my head. I use the magnetic attract rather than the abutment connect so I’m not sure if this has any implications with feedback issues etc My audiologist yesterday said she did lower some of the higher frequencies to try and lessen risk of feedback - I will have to see if this has an impact on understanding speech. It’s still early days but first impressions are better than expected. I’m yet to use it in social situations or at work.

My first device is the BAHA 6. Mine squeels when anything, hats, collars, etc.., gets near it. Nothing has to touch it. I shave my head because of permenant cancer treatment hair loss. So hair is not an issue. Because my abutment is back further than most peoples, I can't put my head against a head rest or pillow while wearing it. It squeels or pops off. I just discovered you channel. I have a Baha 6 having had the Baha 5. I too have an issue with squealing when I tilt my head. I have the magnet implant on my right side, and sometimes it squeals when I tilt my head to the left. I did send it back to Cochlear where they replaced a part of the innards, but I was still having the same problem. When I sent it back again, they replaced the whole thing and it worked fine for awhile, but it did come back to a degree. Hopefully they will listen to our collective complaints. As far as securing the processor, I came up with my own solution using thin nylon line and crimps. I secure a loop through the processor on one end and hook it to a small hoop earring on my right ear using a lobster clasp. Hope this helps.

I had my abutment replaced by a doctor when I told him I had bleeding problem. I was considering osia but the doctor advises a new abutment instead, and a slightly longer abutment improves bleeding. I wonder if a new abutment would help with your problem since audiologist cannot replace it? BTW here in Hong Kong Baha 6 max is still unavailable🙄

I'm surprised the 6 is not available in HK yet. Have you gotten a reason why from Cochlear HK?

@@LetThereBeEars No idea, at least they are still supporting it, so repairing should not be a problem for now. Since you have issues with Baha 6 max, I guess I can stick with Baha 5 for a bit longer.

Hi, Thanks for the feedback. My experiences, I had a trial run with the BAHA 6 max and had a lot of issues like you had mention. I have the magnet implant though. I found the Baha 5 power I had would work better for me ( it did squeal some but not as bad the Baha6 did). however I am need of a new battery door and cochlear don't make replacement parts anymore for the Baha 5 power. So, I ended up going with the BAHA 5 super power. Another thing The Baha 6 max I didn't like the cord that attaches to the baha and the shirt. it was a nuisance to deal with. I had to be more be careful because it was always getting caught on something, pets, when someone hug me and it would even interfere when wearing a seat belt. The Baha 5 super power I don't have lot issues with. I also like the fact I can wear a hat over the Baha 5 super power and not have the squealing like the other Baha's would do.

I'm glad the 5 is working well for you. If it's not broken and it's working well, I suggest you to stay with what works. Thanks for following my videos and being a subscriber!

I am single-sided deaf in my left ear (0% hearing). If you look at Cochlear's progression of hardware and software, they dole out a bit at a time. My BAHA4 with the tiny buttons, how that was usable by anyone let alone an older person, no clue. My BAHA 5 at least is controllable via my iPhone and Bluetooth. But the noise cancellation quality is terrible outside with wind. So I only wear my BAHA5 at home which is fine. It works well for conference calls, music, and movies. My insurance company pays 100% for a new device every 5 years. Based on your review, I will wait for the BAHA7 rather than getting the BAHA6 now. I appreciate your videos, comments, ideas, and opinions.

I'm still bewildered by the way they designed the battery door. The notch wears out quickly and the process of replacing the battery door isn't for the faint of heart (especially if it's your first time). I'm glad the BAHA5 is working well for you. It's consistent and it doesn't seem to have a mind of its own even though you can tell sometimes that it does. But not as much as the BAHA6. While the 6 can deliver exceptional sound and convenience (streaming), it can also deliver frustrating experiences with squealing and feedback. Thanks for subscribing!

Thank you so much ❤for your videos. It inspired me… I’m from Salt Lake City Utah but currently in LA for a few days getting my new prosthetic left ear needed from birth 65 years ago. I have a wonderful angioplasty artist constructing my new left ear. I’m excited to see the final result on Thursday. I will have my update on result. Thanks again for making others aware since there are so many people with this issue. I only wish I had this as a child growing up.❤

Baha 6 is still not available at Hong Kong at that moment, but my ears cannot wait until it comes to Hong Kog so I have to buy Baha 5. Anyway, I prefer Baha 3 because at least I can adjust the volume directly from the hearing aid.

Thanks for your work on the review. There isn’t nearly enough content out there for people considering Baha options, but your videos are excellent. I am currently demo-ing the Baha 6 Max on the SoundArc. I am having the surgery for the implant soon. Since there don’t seem to be any reviews of the SoundArc, if you want to collaborate on a review for your channel, let me know.

This is my third year with BAHA 6 Max. My initial experience was like yours, clear high pitched letters of speech and pin drops. Bat sounds are so clear too! I had my first BAHA 3 few years back. However, BAHA 6Max solved few problems I had with the previous generations, particularly with deteriorating rubber and thin layer of latex around the pin of attachment to the abutment. BAHA6M doesn't have that problem. In addition, you're right to mention its battery consumption efficiency, my best period was 10 days in spite of my use of workshop tools and loud home cinema! What I am really hoping for in the near future is a remotely chargeable and water proof BAHA ? Supreme fully equipped with auto-streaming from smart TV's and projectors so as not to disturb early birds when they go to bed. How about the facility of transmitting to your phone with recording function as well ...... what do you think, or shall I say one could record their thought ideas by "talking to them self loud" ;) Thank you for your greatly helpful review 🤗

Now you're thinking. Has cochlear hired you for R&D yet? I would love a waterproof BAHA.. splash proof doesn't really cut it when cochlear implants and other devices have more protection. Glad to hear the 6 max is treating you well

Update, went to Apple this morning, they say my phone is doing ok, well then why is it my “message” app (I set on Bark so I can hear it) not “barking at me anymore? Also, to you, the author, did you finally give up and send them back for replacement? I’m seriously considering doing this.

Thank you for this video - it's EXACTLY what I've been going through - received my Baha6 Max (magnetics (2)) in "March" and like YOU the sounds - I MISS hearing 'everything' also - finally made an appointment with Apple to see if it's a phone problem - been to the audiologist numerous times or emailed complaints. It hurts when I go to 'meeting' movies etc. With the sound quality awful! Tomorrow I have an appointment with Apple to see if it IS a iPhone problem and/or if I should upgrade to another newer apple phone that may be more compatible with these Baha6's .... So thank YOU again - now I can send your video to my audiologist (save it to my phone?) to show Apple Tomorrow - your video says it ALL for me. So thank YOU again - stay Cool this summer....
