Let’s Fix: The Dunbrack Street Painted Bike Lanes
The Dunbrack Street Painted Bike Lanes cover the 3.5km between Main Avenue and Kearney Lake Road in Clayton Park area. They generally don’t feel safe to use and mostly don’t provide useful connections to the surrounding area. The neighbourhood is seeing a rapid influx of population and medium and high density construction, and sits along a planned rapid transit route.
In this video, I take a look at what it would take to make these bike lanes safer and more useful to people getting around by bike.

    all about making biking safer for the 1% of the population that uses bikes 6 months a year. ppl use this street as a major traffic route into the city. since there is more than enough room on the commons side of the street for 4+ bike lanes (and also does not further reduce the street for the 99% of the people that use it. ) bike lane planning needs to take into account how many ppl use them compared to how many ppl use the same streets it for cars. but i guess when it is one of the stated goals of city councils implementation of bike lanes is to make driving "painful and very difficult" (quote from my city councilor) the city has been very successful.

      @DR-hp6tu The point of bike infrastructure is to induce people to switch from using a car to using a bike. In the sense, they're successful insofar as people can make trips while feeling safe. Driving isn't miserable because of bikes, it's miserable because of other cars. Every person on a bike is somone who's not in a car.

    6:11 Lion's Gate Bridge in Vancouver is pretty similar to MacDonald Bridge; both the original design and the redesign that shifted pedestrians/cyclists to clip ons. However, Lion's Gate allows pedestrians and cyclists on both sides. And as someone who walked across it, I can confirm I was very uncomfortable having cyclists blow past me in it.

    I would say the roundabout with the transit lines going through, but grade separated. Have the roundabout go down, and the bus lanes go up in a fly over. This: 1. Removes the conflict points of the buses trying to cut through the roundabout, especially during rush hour. 2. Prevents people from making a wrong turn down the bus lane when they miss their out. 3. Avoids signalised roundabout. which is another lay of complexity drivers have to watch out for.

    Great video! This is my commute... I usually demount and cross at the Ahern sidewalk to get across Bell Road; it's a really strange intersection. It's not uncommon to see people miss the turn where the shared path follows Ahern, and instead ride on the pedestrian-only sidewalk toward Bell... Where they discover that there's no sanctioned way to cross the street to the inbound bike lane.

    • @hfxbybike
      @hfxbybike 2 місяці тому

      @philiprayner it depends on bike/pedestrian traffic volumes. MUPs work great where pedestrian volumes are low/moderate, but if it's high (eg major commercial street downtown), it would become unbikeable. You can address this somewhat by making MUPs obscenely wide (6+ meters), but then you're just creating bike lanes with extra steps. MUPs are tragically underused, though.

Coming back to the south end, coming up Quinpool just after Armview when I was forced by traffic to ride into the parallel storm drain that ate my front rim and tire, then my back tire went in the gap, put an 8" dent in my rim, tore off my rear derailleur. I left my old bike where it died and I walked home.

    This really isn't simply a question of risk in terms of who will bike ride and who won't bike ride. Lots and lots of people are simply physically lazy, and to get around they will as a matter of course refuse any physical effort. They might see themselves as "coffee achievers" and so feel they don't need to be sporty with getting around or even simply exercise, but they are toads regardless. So I guess you could conclude that there is always going to be a big portion of the dwellers in a city who will refuse to do this no matter what the bike and street provisions are.

    • @Kattbirb
      @Kattbirb 2 місяці тому

      That's fine and all. There's still a large number of people who will use the infrastructure if it feels safe enough for them to do so. We don't have to get everyone cycling in order to improve our cities, just 10% of people would have huge benefits.

      I realize it's a good thing that improves matters for us regardless, but it's a valid observation. I see the same evidence nearly every day with the people who will ride e-bikes like mopeds on throttled bike power and refuse any exercise with it. I think it's pathetic. Maybe Americans are simply bigger slobs about things like this.

    • @Kattbirb
      @Kattbirb 2 місяці тому

      @derekjolly3680 Honestly, I don't see why you're hung up on that. If someone is riding a Class 2 bike on throttle, that's still one less car on the road, and they're getting fresh air and still slightly more exercise than someone in a two ton, air-conditioned, caged wheelchair just by virtue of balance and the occasional pedal stroke. Not enough to get fit by any means, of course, but what's more important is that the infrastructure is succeeding at that point, and it can make inroads, pun intended, to getting more infrastructure for everyone else.

    One reason why there is backlash or bikelash to bike lanes on streets is it removes street parking in residential neighbourhoods . The solution could be borrowed from Tokyo. I read one can not purchase a car in Tokyo unless they have a designated driveway to park the car . Biking can be safe on residential streets without protected bike lanes if on-street parking is banned on select streets. I'd like to see straight thoroughfares crisscrossing the city because they are more efficient than taking fifty to a hundred left turns , right turns and detours just to get from point A to point B . Tokyo also allows bicycles on some sidewalks. My closing note is A portion of Clyde Street has enough room for a short protected connector bikeway to get from the library to Southpark bikelane since there's too much car and bus traffic on Springgarden .

    Couple of points - I do not see why traffic on Slayter needs to be diverted at all times if the traffic issues are mainly at peak times! There are people who live in the area who cannot bike and need cars, and the intersection at Thistle and Victoria is arguably the most dangerous, especially with the schools so diverting cars there is a bad concept. Second, both Pine and Maple are narrow enough in the winter as it is - a better alternative is to use the paths already available in the Dartmouth commons - taking bikes off the roads, giving a more accessible slope and already connected to the bikeway from the bridge to downtown. (This could also provide a new gate at the NorthEast end of the commons that has long been needed). The bike way could then move along either Thistle to Slayter; or better cut across Dartmouth High to the Nantucket bikeway. I do like the idea of the bikeway moving on the North side of Nantucket and School, as the south side has a blind slipway crossing that would be very dangerous; unless the route through Gladstone was used. I absolutely hate the concept at Frances St; and quite frankly think that the stop signs on Slayer slightly slowing down bike traffic is a good thing - I have seen some bikes moving faster than cars on Slayter, and that is just as dangerous to children and pedestrians.

    • @hfxbybike
      @hfxbybike 3 місяці тому

      Diversions are mostly all or nothing. Sign-based traffic diversions (which you'd need to make them time-sensitive), are generally ignored. Thistle/Victoria is already congested; that's why cars are rat-running onto Slayter in the morning to begin with. Diverters just keep that congestion off of neighbourhood streets. Maple (8.6m) and Pine (8.0m) are both wide enough to easily accommodate a single lane of traffic under any realistic conditions (3.0 - 3.4m), so that wouldn't be an issue. Using the Commons is mostly not compatable with the intended function of the proposed bikeway (quick/efficient cross-Dartmouth trips and connections to the bridge). For instance, someone going from Downtown Dartmouth to Burnside via Slayter would have to cross Victoria twice just to get on the bikeway. No one is going to do that. The functional speed limit on bikes is ~30kph for most people. Cars tend to go somewhat faster in my experience. Thanks for the feedback!

This comes up with rail projects in larger cities: elevated rail is much cheaper than tunnels but there's political pressure to make projects invisible, which generally results in them being underground (expensive) or just not exist (common).

      That Dead Zone would be both easy (lots of open space!) and incredibly hard (all the roads are like six lanes wide, massive intersections). I probably can't just say "nuke it from orbit and begin again" in a video.

    For lower cost, lower exposure to whipping winds 50m above the water, and greater design flexibility (but possibly higher crossing time) I've been thinking about an urban gondola. An east end 'landing' could go at the corner of South and Oxford and leverage that little triangular park for space, and a west end landing could be put near Purcels Cove and Fleming, with corresponding bus route modifications on either end for transit connectivity. It would certainly make getting to Dal easier.

      A gondola concept was *this* close to making it into the video.

    Spryfield has substandard bicycle infrastructure and is on par with Sackville as probably some of the worst cycling communities in hrm. There's a new paved multi-use bike and pedestrian lane up next to where the new hospital is being built. It's ninety nine percent complete and connects the industrial park to blt chain of lakes trail .

    I thought the reason the bridge over the Arm never happened was because it would have been built in the most affluent neighborhood in the city, and they did not want the increased traffic a bridge would cause in their neighborhood.

    • @hfxbybike
      @hfxbybike 3 місяці тому

      That probably doesn't help, but it stacks hard with "bridge fails cost/benefit" anyways.

    The elevated bikeway is the best solution for all. Cities in the Netherlands built elevated bikeways all the time and it didn't break their bank . City council is deliberately delaying it because they are just looking for votes so they can please the Nimbys . Similar sized Dutch Cities aren't any richer than halifax so if they can afford it so can we . Halifax will never reach its potential if we continually bow down to the belly-aching car-brains.

      Thanks! Generally I would get back up to Hollis (usually via Duke) and climb up Morris to University and then use the Vernon Bikeway to get to Quinpool. Peninsula is severely lacking for east-west bike routes.

    Just as a note, part of their original proposals was a modal filter on Victoria. Not quite part of the general discussion here, but could have further justified flipping the stop signs as less car traffic would be coming through, and would be less dangerous at the Victoria intersection for all.

      It's actually funny (sad?) watching things like bikeways go through the design process and come out on the other end as "We had to balance building a good bikeway against not building one at all, so here's 1/4 of a bikeway!"

    The trail is great, but it is super frustrating that there's no effort or roadmap to make a proper bike network around it - Lacewood could easily accommodate protected bike lanes on the existing verge and offer a ton of connectivity to destinations, not to mention what better connections into Bayers Lake or to the Chain of Lakes trail would get you.

    Don’t know what the parking fuss is about. I live in the Dal campus area and drive my bike and car about equally to get around town (when I’m not walking). I never have a problem finding a parking spot on the peninsula. There are these convenient green signs with a “P” on them that direct you parkades and open air parking throughout the central area. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I don’t agree with auctioning off permitted parking for residents who don’t have driveways/parking spots at their houses. The current residential parking permit system works fine. Currently it’s $75/year. It isn’t fair to make residents compete with wealthy non residents who want a dedicated parking spot downtown - let them buy a spot in a parkade.

    Bizarro world is off-street parking being more expensive than on-street parking. On top of limiting the supply of on-street parking, it's unfairly competing with private parkades and businesses. Imagine if the government set up a hot dog store next to Costco and said, "you have hot dogs for $1.50? We're going to sell them for $0.50 and use taxes to cover our losses"

      Yeah, thus would theoretically allow neighbourhoods to expedite traffic calming upgrades by just doing it themselves. Obviously they would need to clear the concept/design with the city in advance, but no more backlog issues.
