My name is Chris. I fly airplanes for fun and I'm building an airplane to keep myself humble... It's working. Check out my builder podcast with fellow RV-8 builder, Tim, on Spotify, 'We ARE Not Experts : An Airplane Building Podcast'.
Van's RV-8 Build. Ep 143. Flaps 20. Flaps are Finally Complete
I can finally say that both flap assemblies are complete. Today, I finished closing out the left flap. I had a little trouble at the end with the LP4-3 pull rivets attaching the inboard bracket to the rib, but it was not too concerning given the 17 solid AN4704 rivets attaching the bracket assembly to the inboard rib and spar.

Van's RV-8 Build. Ep 142. Flaps 19. Right Flap Complete, Left Flap Next
Переглядів 19912 годин тому
Today I was able to get the right flap 100% complete. I did make a blunder when trimming eyelets off of one of the piano hinges for the center mount mod, but it's not unrecoverable. All in all, a good day of building. *'We are NOT Experts: An Airplane Building Podcast'. Great to see you back at it. A question for you, are you really Billy Zane specifically from the movie Barabbas moonlighting as and RV8 builder… nah just kidding it all I see is you when I watched that movie 🤣 keep up the good work.
😆I wish I had some of that Billy Zane money finish this build. Lol
Won`t be long til both you and Tim are starting the fuselage .
@@JoeyWebber955 Tim before me. His is already on order. It will be a while before I order mine. Good news is that lead times have come down significantly. So, when I’m ready, there shouldn’t be much delay.
Nice. Its all coming together
Little by little
I totally understand about things bothering you that will never be seen . I`m one of those OCD people where mismatched bolt bother me , screw slots have to line up ,, all sorts of odd stuff like that most people never pay attention to .
It's the little things that make the big things better.
Sadly it is the P3 piano hinge that's out of stock with Spruce right now and that's the same size you need for the flaps. Vans may actually have some in stock though if you check with them.
Gotcha. But it’s two different sizes need for the wingtips, correct?
@@thathippiepilot Yeah the half of the hinge that attaches to the wing is the P4 size then that mates up to the wingtip side that is p3
Slinging TRUTHS!
LOL
Good morning. From burr Florida. Been following ryanflys. He doing a 7. He just finished his avionics. Great reference for your future how do we fo this? Others are out there tho. He just posted cost of doing wiring and installing avionics. He left a spreadsheet for all to view. So you buy the right length of wire Anyway as to ehere you are check his install of wingtips he had a few tips as to what he did. You're fun to watch
Thanks Bob. I’ve been following Ryan from the beginning and often rewatch his videos for reference. Great channel and a really good guy.
They do the same thing with all of the models. "Section 1 complete? Ok, you are now an expert!"
😂
... Great Vid .... having said that ... sometimes good riveting is gunna be a 2 person job ! 😉
Thanks! I agree. I’m lucky to have other builders like Tim nearby to buddy rivet with. Especially when it’s time to attach the bottom wing skins.
Since I am biased about my beloved C5 and Lockheed aircraft in general I refer to my aeroplane factory as the Skunkworks lol. Glad to see you were able to make some good progress yesterday. Its funny how often the wife walks out there and says "why dont you just" and then I get to feel dumb for a bit for not seeing the obvious lol.
Skunkworks is a great choice. Lots of experimenting happened there too.
3rd of DECEMBER? ha, ha, heh, heh. (watch what date you put on your checks. It's that change of year phenomenon all over again) Happy New Year!!
Hilarious. I was so proud of myself for remembering to say 2025
@@thathippiepilot 🙂
Hello! Nice score on the rivet removal tools, yes they work great! Anyway I tried the same cradles from my stab build, not the best solution so I made a cradle using a rib as a pattern. Huge improvement as it keeps everything straight and square and the rib/skins sit tight. Anyway just thought Id suggest doing that. Have fun!!?!
Thanks, Basel. I’ll keep that in mind when I get to riveting. I’ll see what I think about the current cradle setup
Thank you so much for doing this video. It really does help a prospective builder like me see a lot of what's needed in the shop.
You are most welcome. Glad the video is helpful.
Hey I just wanted to drop a comment to say THANK YOU for making these videos. I have a hard enough time just finding the time to work on my RV8 project let alone film everything, edit that footage and post it here. The time you have to spend doing this does not go unnoticed!!
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. Honestly, my editing workflow has become pretty routine. At this point, I think keeping a printed log with photographs would be more time consuming for me.
Do you wish you had done the countersinking of the wing skin attach holes BEFORE you riveted the ribs on?? That's where I'm at right now, about to rivet the ribs in place and I'm just trying to figure out if if makes more sense to c/s all these holes now where I can use the drill vertically instead of later and having to use it horizontally??
I don’t recall it being anymore difficult countersinking horizontally as opposed to vertically. If anything, it’s a little more of a natural angle for your wrist.
I have put off a few things til after the New Years . I have more than enough distractions right now and don`t need to try and force any more in . Enjoy your mini Vacation .
Happy New Year, Joey!
Good Luck on the new podcast. I fear this will take you away form building your plane. I am already into the fuselage and I was hoping you would catch up and pass me so I could continue to learn from you.
Little chance that the podcast will takeaway from building. It’s simply recording conversations that already occur. Have fun on the fuselage! I’m still very far away from that.
When it comes time to rivet the ribs you really should consider making the cradles like they say in the written plans. You will be bucking rivets in a really tight space and if the skins and ribs are flexed or moved to accommodate your hand and or a bucking bar it could cause a twist. The stands help secure/hold the flap skins while you drive rivets. Also Use your 3” pneumatic squeezer jaws as a bucking bar, they’re easier to hold and narrow. Doesn’t hurt them and I found them handy to get to the really tight spaces. Use masking tape on them as well to keep them from marring the inside corner areas.
Thanks, Basel. I’d be interested in seeing what you’re describing re: using the squeezer yoke.
@@thathippiepilot just use it like a bucking bar that’s easier to get down to the trailing edge and hold because its thinner. Once you get the flap in the cradle and driving rivet you will understand. Basically using the side of the yoke to get a shop head you are satisfied with. It may take a few more hits but getting a normal bucking bar and your hand inside the ribs is a challenge at the trailing edge. They say the ribs are the easiest to build, Ha! That’s a hard nope from me they kinda suck.
Good call not forcing work to get done when distracted. That's how bonus holes are made lol. Its not a mistake if you call it a feature.
I definitely don’t want corkscrew biased flaps to be feature. lol
Chris, Don't score the aluminum. That is why we deburr all our parts so as not to cause a minor stress point. Don't use a pencil either, continue to use the Sharpie.
Thanks, David. I’ll be polishing out the light scoring when preparing those parts for attachment.
DD214 😂
Every time
The easier way to bend the parts is with a Bending Brake --- but like with a LOT of build tools, the price isn't justified for the few parts that need to be bent. But wait, there is more build (and condition inspections) to come {with same expensive tool requirements}
I’d thought about a bending brake. And I’ll use any excuse to make another trip to Harbor Freight. But, I’ve never used one and wasn’t sure if it would be too harsh on soft aluminum. But, now that I have a welder in my shop to start working on other projects, a bending brake would be a nice addition.
@@thathippiepilot The guy in the hangar across from mine is building a Zenith CH-750 and he has used a brake frequently for his parts --- has not bothered the aluminum and has made bending parts so much easier for him. ((I did all my bending the same way that you did ---- as Van's says, "WHANG!" method ;-)
That’s great info. The WHANG method is definitely anxiety inducing.
Lenses separate
Not sure what you’re saying. Do you mean that the wingtip lenses are separate from the FlyLEDs order, hence the smaller than expected box?
@@thathippiepilot yes
I forgot to warn you the FlyLEDS box is deceptively small lol. My kit came in two of those same boxes and I was for sure there was no way all that stuff was in there.
I was stunned
Extraordinary work!
Thanks!
I've got one better for you on the electric situation: At our airport, we have buildings housing 16 T hangar bays. Each side of the building houses 8 bays. Each set of 8 bays is fed by ONE single 20 amp breaker [120 volt] (( 2 breakers for the full 16 bays. And some occupants want mini-fridges or HVAC units or (like me) a compressor, ..... Yeah, fun times ))
Crazy!
The best part of subscribing ,,, it is totally free .
I agree
Think long and hard about countersinking the flap skin, as I recall it is .020" thk and the minimum thickness for a #3 rivet CSK is .032". The skin will be knife edged which is not good for load. Check with Van's first. Even .032" is boarder line for a #3 CSK.
If I remember right you countersink the rivet hinge and dimple the skin.
I misspoke in the video. You countersink the spar flange. Dimple the skin.
Bonus holes happen. So yeah I never seen or thought about that note for edge distance on my hinge. Oh well it’s just an airplane. 😂
😂😂
Great video mate. You have made understanding the prep for these parts so much more simple.
@@jimanderson6362 thanks, Jim. Glad you found it useful.

Problem with reading ahead is that unless you've already built, things that you may read may go in one eye and out the other without stopping in between --- you won't realize somethings you're not supposed to have done until the "oops" happens. (That's life. Don't sweat the small stuff)
You're absolutely correct. Without context, somethings are just words on paper.

Took a 3.5 hour job to replace a low oil pressure sensor on an Audi Q7 diesel to about 45 minutes . Time is money working in an auto shop .
Nice!
AN parts make more sense than the NAS # (IMHO)
I agree
0:15 --> 0:20 is my normal attention-span
Valuable feedback, Sharyn. Thanks!
Not so much about video length, but relevant content. Terrific lessons learned for us planning our own build.
Awesome, thank you!
Love the modified harbor freight tool. I wish I had done that. I may have to make a short vid when I get home showing the difference in my no hole yoke and my parts sorting. Great explanations in your vid.
You should!
Great gob ! Thank you for those explanations .Keep going .
Thanks, will do!
Excellent work. You did a much better job than me at explaining those fixtures. Felt like to me the ailerons took a deceptively long amount of time. There’s a lot going on there.
I agree. For me, it was 6 sessions totaling 34.6 hours.
sorry to hear about your Dad.
Thank you
Thank you!! Love seeing all of the progress you’re making on your build!
More to come!
