OOAK art with LindaE
United States
Приєднався 17 тра 2009
I started recording videos in September 2016 when I began expressing my love of art through video. I started sculpting in 2008 but I started making art in one form or another when I was a small child. I had zero experience making videos though but I wanted to share my love of this art form in a way that will be around long after I am gone from this world. My channel was going to be about sculpting primarily but making One-of-a-kind art dolls and mixed media crafts as well. This was not my day job, so up until recently, I was only able to make the content as time allowed. I have been a sculptor, painter, doll maker, and crafter for almost 50 years. My love of art started when I was 5, I was an art major in High School and learned Stone, Wood, and clay sculpting under Ralph Baney in College. I was very lucky that I lived close to the school he taught at. I hope that something in my videos sparks a love for sculpting in people and I will continue making new content as time allows.

Turning an action figure into a fairy figurine How to tutorial OOAK art with LindaE

I am currently editing a 20-hour-long recording and it is taking longer than I expected, so I decided to go ahead and upcycle this starting lineup action figure that I had found, into a fairy figurine, record the process, and post it seeing as I have not posted anything to youtube since last year. Making this video, editing it, and posting it was done in a day. Compared to a week to record and ...

There is a learning curve with paper clay because the clay is softer. Make sure that you keep the clay thin, you can work in layers, letting it dry in between. Also, you can try using water to smooth. Polymer had a learning curve also but the thing with paper clay is that you do not need to bake it, it is lighter and can be used directly on your medium without having to worry if it will crack the item you are sculpti g on or warp which would ruin polymer clay. Plus, you can make your own paper clay, and also use it with paper mache. Polymer clay can be expensive. That said, if you are more comfortable with polymer, you just need some good adhesives, and you can still use baked polymer clay pieces in mixed media.
Recent feedback has encouraged me to make a version of this without the full commentary and run it faster. I am making it now. This is a quick way to make a head. The actual time I spent on this video was less than 2 hours and I removed very little. The new video will be under 10 minutes. I spent an additional 20 or so minutes off-camera fine-tuning, cleaning, and getting it ready for the oven which was not part of this video sadly. The camera was supposed to be recording but it was not. My apologies for that. I will post the link to the new shorter video when it is finished.
Thank you so much! I needed these tips today, my clay is so old and dry. I'm hoping this will help!
Thank you for your comment <3 If your clay is really brittle and prewarming does not help, try crushing it into small pieces then put them in a ziplock and add drops of clay softener, let it sit for a few days before you try it again. I have an old Fimo that was so brittle I had to get a mini food processor and grind it and blend the clay softener into it that way. But I was able to make it usable again. Good luck.
I'd say very well done! I make dolls for quite some time now, and you have showed me a couple of things that i can do or do differently. So thank you very much for that. I think its beautyfull!

Was yr teacher Jack Johnson by any chance? ❤
No, although I do know Jack, he is a great teacher, I just never had the money to take a class with him. If you like Jack's style of doll making check out Karen Baker. She is a wonderful artist and a great teacher. She was Jack's assistant in teaching for years and has kind of a similar style. I think she even made costumes for his dolls for a while. Look on CuriousMondo.com They have a few of her courses available, but maybe wait for a sale. LOL
@@ooakartwithlindaE Thankyou yes I'm in touch with Karen Baker, she is amazing but so are you I think its nice to have a couple of different people to learn from, I was just curious if you were taught by him too, because yr very talented I love all yr work, Karen's going to be good for costuming, the one part of the whole package I find a challenging, I did find something on Jack showing some costuming & how he went about that & now I can't find it again, but what I did find out was useful. Thabkyou again for helping me with information, it's very kind of you 😊
Hi Linda , not sure if I've asked before, but doesn't the rubbing alcohol evaporate too quickly
Thank you for your question! It does evaporate quickly, but not so fast that the surface does not melt, and if you needed to melt more, just reapply. This is why I love the nail polish removed dispenser. It gives me easy access to more any time I need it.

I appreciate you so much Denise, taking the time to show yr techniques, I'm watching the tools you use to fo different things, like even the brush, what kind of brush end is that & I've been using baby oil to try & smooth out instead of isopropyl alcohol & I agree with not making the sculpt exactly like someone else's, & the flaws it makes it unique to you, it's so fun, sculpting even though I might not be great at it yet, I have the best fun with it, I also find it hard to part with them lol 😊 I'm still watching, I would love to see you paint his eyes like in the finished pic you showed of him, nice bright green eyes & I love the idea of the glass beads for eyes, excellent likeness ❤
Did you mean to put this comment here? I ask because my name is Linda LOL But Thank you anyway. Yes, there is an eye-painting video on my channel. It is very hard to record painting the eyes with a head this small. I have to have my hand and my head close to the head so I can see what I am doing and also get the camera in there without bumping it with my head or my hands. The head I painted the eyes on was almost double this one's size. I just finished recording a Day of the Dead face paint including painting her eyes. The only difference between painting blue eyes and green eyes is the paint color. LOL But I do switch to copper paint instead of gold as the shows better on the green. ua-cam.com/video/aARSWqgs3Vc/v-deo.html
Linda are you willing to share how you make the body so wide & how you get him to stand so solid ? ❤😊 Thank you
I made a series of three videos where I make armature. My dolls are pretty big and it is hard to keep them in frame and not also have me in the frame. Lol, my anxiety is ridiculous, I know. Each of the three videos demonstrates a different way to make an armature. You would only need to watch the beginning section of each. With armature size is everything. The bigger the doll, the more heavy duty your armature needs to be. They American bull dog video is how almost all of my dolls armatures are made. The bones allow the limbs to be strong and stable but still easy to pose. I will eventually do a full start to finish doll video but it would be 10 or more hours of video. If I post it in real time without edits and fast forward, it will not be fun to watch. Lol but I will get brave enough to be in the frame through the whole video eventually I hope and will make one. Anxiety is no fun.

Thank you, Sorry for the delayed reply, I did not see it until now.
What clay are you using here, it looks so shiny & quite malleable, I love this face, is there any reason you don't use resin eyes ?
I believe that was Caucasian Prosculpt. You can use resin or glass or any kind of eye you like but they can be expensive and as this type of face, for my purposes is going to be used for crafting on wreaths or in mixed media art and I try to keep the prices reasonable. So the Acrylic eyes make sense to me to use as they are much less expensive. You can usually find them at 8 pairs for $11.99 or less. Whereas resin eyes run $6.00 or more a pair. See what I mean. I bought 100 pairs for one time for $50.00 While I doubt I will ever find a deal like that again, I have a large supply of acrylic eyes. I am glad you like this face.
@@ooakartwithlindaE I make my own resin eyes, but I've read they can melt or distort if you put them in then bake it.
@@aussiemachandmadeeverything I have been told that it depends on the kind of resin. I would test it by baking the resin eyes and see what happens. I make my own eyes also but I use cabochons and polymer clay. I bought molds and resin from a friend to try it but sadly the eyes did not turn out right even after trying all of her suggestions. I can say though that the few pairs that did turn out came through the baking process just fine. I need a pressure pot or something to get the eyes to not have air bubbles.
@@ooakartwithlindaE what I did last night is make some polymer eye molds, so I can paint inside tge socket, then I'm going to bake them, & put the in the head, then bake the head, fill the socket up will self levelling resin & I can cure the resin with a black torch light & see how they turn out, I'll send you another pic then, Thankyou for yr replies & suggestions, I guess you have to experiment don't you ? I'll send once I try them out 😊

Oh i found the clay hand being made Thank you, this is definitely a better way to do it 😊 what are these wires called please and what is T O S ? Also are you aware that you keep going out of camers shot 😊
Thanks I am glad you found the video. I was using cloth covered floral wire. Yes, I am far sighted so I have to wear multiple pairs of glasses to see what I am sculpting sculpting and that means that I can not see the screen clearly because the glasses distort anything that is not within a foot of me. If I touch my glasses the solvent in the clay damages the plastic frame. I have ruined a couple of pairs that way. I bought a bigger screen since that video was made, so it happens less often. I wish I could rewind time and fix it, but the parts that you could see, I tried to explain verbally. Anyway, I hope you still enjoyed the video.

I love that you shiwed how to do this, i have mentioned to you before that i struggle with making hands, i tried making hands the other day but with just thin wire it kind of worked but i covered them with polymer clay, would you mind doing a tutorial on covering a hand with clay & then showing how to pose it after or before, thats the hardest Off topic i read in yr bio you'd been sculpting for over 50 years is that correct because you look way to young fir that im 56 myself, is it a typo, anyway thanks fir this style of hand covering with the glue too great idea, id love to know what the name of the gnome book is please 🙏 🙏
It is not a typo. I started making art when I was 5. LOL I have always been artistically inclined. I was making and selling painted shells by the time I was 9. I painted beach scenes on sea shells Sea Horses and other nautical creatures as well and I turned them into ornaments and sold them to the beach shops that sold them to tourists. It was fun and I always had arcade money. By the time I hit High School, I had already learned how to paint just about any subject with acrylic and watercolor paints and how to draw realistic still life and portraits with pencils, pen and ink, and chalk. I got into the Art Majors program after starting freshman year when the program head saw my work over my shoulder. I did not even know the school had an art majors program. Normally you had to apply ahead of time. I was also very lucky to live close to the College where Ralph Baney taught. He was an amazing sculptor from Trinidad who had exhibited his work in Galleries around the world. I was able to learn life-sized portrait sculpting in Terra Cotta from him as well as sculpting in Wood and Stone. Making dolls was a total flip of what I already knew as the normal tools were useless when working so small but it quickly became my obsession and it is what I have been focusing on for the last 15 years. Although the background education that I had with Portrait drawing and painting and also general anatomy drawing knowledge definitely helped. The UA-cam Bio does not really have enough space to fit all of that. LOL
The Gnome book is called: Gnomes by Wil Huygen

Thankyou for sharing Can i ask where you purchase yr armature wire from, ive made some sculptures & ive used wire thats bendable as in florist thick wire, i dont feel it has the rigidity to help the doll stand up on its own Could you give some advice, i love yr videos too there excellent 😊
Thank you very much, Aussie! I am glad that you like my videos. I use copper electrical wire. I get it at Home Depot It comes with a plastic covering that had to be removed if you are going to bake it along with the clay but it does not have to be removed if you are going to glue the prebaked pieces onto the armature. It can be expensive wire but it is so durable, but if you know an electrician you can ask them to save you their cut-off pieces. When I make really big dolls, I use Steel tension wire that is used for supporting the top of long runs of chain link fencing to the "bones" section of the dolls or to be the legs in general if they are meant to always be standing and I will even double it up. That would also be available in places like Home Depot. But my preference for any doll under 3 feet is Copper. And it comes in a bunch of different sizes. But the plastic coating can put off toxic smoke if burned so remove it first if the armature is going to be baked.
