    My own training is only just starting to feel decent again this week after the Christmas indulgence. I did get out for a run on Christmas Day for the first time ever, really enjoyed it, and worked up a serious appetite for Christmas dinner! Definitely going to be a new annual tradition going forward. I'm also convinced that you run slower in the dark - my weekday sessions are all in the evening because of work and I swear I'm working much harder to hit the same paces I'd hit on a Saturday or Sunday morning run. Best of luck to Holly in the London marathon! Going almost straight into another marathon block after Valencia is tough work but no doubt she'll smash it!

      It’s a great thing to do and sometimes the best thing to escape the chaos for 30mins! That’s interesting. I assumed it was maybe because I don’t run in the dark that often and wasn’t used to it but maybe it is just a thing! She seems to have recovered well so hopefully she can get a good block of training in and smash a big PB. Will be nice to just be part of the support crew for a change!

      I only really get new pairs for marathons. I’ll train in a pair for the whole block and then before a marathon do 2 sessions (probably around 20 miles) in a brand new pair. For any shorter races I’ll just wear my best pair and for training I’ll just rotate through the pairs I’ve collected over the past 2 years. As long as they don’t have holes they’re fine for training!

I normally do a load of static stuff in my house before I go out. I do need to get more sports massage too. I have a pain in my knee when I run after a half hour or so. Only while running and it's gone shortly after running. I have done some research and it would appear to be ITB issue. Did you run through your injury? I feel like I could still run but maybe run slower and less mileage and work my way back up. I took a few weeks off. My legs felt great but immediately after running a couple miles the discomfort started again. Going to physio soon to see what they can come up with

    • @Ryan.Thomson
      @Ryan.Thomson 4 дні тому

      That’s difficult because if running doesn’t appear to make it worse and resting doesn’t appear to help then the advice would be to keep running. I’m not sure how well that works in practice if every step is painful though because that isn’t much fun. Some hip strengthening may help with strengthening the whole area around the ITB. Crab walks, leg raises, clams and fire hydrants would all work well here. Fingers crossed there’s some improvement!

    Good video Ryan, and well done in Valencia. As I’ve got older, experience has taught me that the number one tip to not getting injured is ‘be young’. Once I got past 35, recovery time takes longer and I have constant low level niggles. Generally not enough to be out fully injured, just annoying pains and aches all over 😰

      Running on soft surfaces is something my parents always made me do when I was younger since they both had knee issues from running too much on roads. Thanks very much! Ohh cool! I think my dad must’ve done the Glasgow marathon the year before you when he was 18 😂 That sounds lovely, I have been a few times actually. Never made it too far from LA or San Francisco though. Would love to do a US marathon and CIM is a good one from what I’ve heard. Hopefully the weather improves for you coming back and you can enjoy a nice sunny parkrun! Thanks for the comment. Glad you’re enjoying the content! 😊

      Yeah I’ve seen some good results and videos from races around there. Hopefully in 2025 I can get down!

    I thought I recognised your GF, so I checked her Parkrun stats: yup, must have seen her at Aberdeen Parkrun! 😊 Small (running) world.

      Yeah she actually started running because of Aberdeen parkrun while she was at uni up there! I'll need to go back with her at some point (when it isn't windy 😂)

    Really impressive! Took me a while to get round to watching this as I wanted to watch the whole thing with minimal interruption. Looking forward to what comes next!

    New follower, something very special about València- I was there supporting this year, ran it in 2023. Your video did it justice. Excellent.

      Thanks very much! Holly came to watch me in 2023 and couldn't resist entering for this years edition. I think she regretted her decision in the days leading up to the race but absolutely loved it as much as I expected her to once she was out there

    Cracking video - you're too hard on yourself - great effort from a road marathon runner.
