Homemade diesel from waste motor oil!
Hi. At what temperature you heat the oil? I try to make some fuel from wmq when the oil was at 50 degree celsius i go or a caffe when i came back the oil was at 100 degree and my oil came out black as i put it in maybe the temp was too high or what happened. I need some advice thanks
150-300 Celsius should work. We use Fahrenheit, but I think I converted it correctly. The tower should be at that temperature, so the oil may be much hotter than that. I hope this helps.
great job! thanks from Brazil
Thank you!
Hey! Cool video! What washing machine is this motor out of?
LG direct drive washer, I bought it on Ebay for $50. It would be much easier to use the washing machine itself. That way, all you have to do is cut the bottom off, and you have everything you need. There is no need to make an axle, bearings, etc. I'm sure it would spin much easier than a hub assembly for a car. I do think that the hub assembly will last longer, though. I would also suggest a copper stator. This one is aluminum windings, but the Ebay seller isn't responding, so I'm stuck with it. That's a whole other story! Lol, thanks for watching!
Absolutely thank you so much for making this the information was awesome ! Keep working at the filming and trust yourself ..... no we couldn't see a thing you were doing so ..... Stop ..... Reset camera angle or rotate the work in your vice 180° soooomething. I've made a few Bushcraft videos for here and spent many hours researching the being a UA-camr angle of this deal. I mean I go out remote solo camping why not record it and make $$$. I'm a charismatic guy .... people like me .... Sure thing !!!! NOT I'm crap on camera I'm dragging out my explanations, poor lighting, wardrobe malfunctions (plumbers crack), name it I did it. I got better after a few attempts and I found a script of sorts helped. Not something to memorize just starting points. AND camera angles !!!!! For me I cheat and take 3 separate ones as much as possible. Giving me options in post. Again dude I'm not being critical. Thank you so much for doing this cuz I like the information you gave. I'm honestly trying to help !!!! Keep it up. I will be subbing.
I definitely have to improve my camera skills. I'm trying to improve with each video, but I'm not sure I am! Lol, it's much harder than I thought. Creators don't get enough credit for the time and effort it really takes. I appreciate the suggestions, and I hope I'll get much better with time. Thanks for watching!
You could use a bike and bike chain.
I thought about that, too. I'll keep that for the last resort as I'm not sure I could do that as long as I used to as a kid! Thanks for the suggestion!
Do you think those 10hp single cylinder diesel engine will power it? One guy said it sips fuel
Yes,that would power a few. The one I have will work. I think I'll give that a shot before I build a VAWT.
Good video! I subscribed. You are a good creator.
Thank you!
Need to get that heating an old hot tub . That would be a great video. Free hot tub free heat. 😊
@MartyT does a great series of videos using these motors in a hydroelectric setup
I've watched them all. I wish I had hydro as an option.
Find a 20mm to 1" shaft adaptor/bushing, get an aftermarket electric pto for a bobcat zero turn about $100ish. Mabey this will help you out. I just happen to work at a small engine shop and when I watched this and you stated your struggle with the shaft diameter issue I was like boom! I got an idea that could help this guy move forward! I would say you should beable to "if" you buy new you should beable to to grab these items for $150 or less. Goodluck and thanks for sharing!
I found the 3/4 to 1-inch adapter and couldn't find the 20mm variety. I think I will be putting the PTO on the 1-inch generator shaft. Thanks for the suggestion.
Check out car ac clutches for the engine. They can hold decent power and are nearly free from junk yards
Very cool brother 😎 👌 👍
Thank you! My last two attempts to modify car alternators failed. I can't get the magnets to stay attached for some reason? This was much easier in every way!
Very cool project! I was looking into something like this a couple of years back for a wind mill. I think an MPPT solar controller would do an amazing job managing the power input after the bridge rectifier. Also you could setup a DIY backup gas generator with your motor. You may need to do some gear ratio thing to work with your motor.
I'm going to try a vertical axis wind turbine.I know most haven't had any success, but I think it will be fun to build and watch. I enjoy watching the turbines that I have now,so it's just something fun to enjoy. I just acquired another tower,so I'll be getting a new one soon. I will do a video of the tower installation as well. Thanks for watching!
Hey really would love to see this in your buddies stove . I want to try that in my 20 x 20 shop. Should keep it toasty. Want to build something that can heat my shop hot tub and a 20x20 greenhouse.
We never ended up installing it in his fireplace. I think I'm going to use it in my outdoor fire pit. I did make a few improvements since the video. Maybe I'll do an update?
Nice idea thanks 😊
I noticed you have the car shelters in the back. And it looks like you closed one in with wood and tin. If you could do a little video on those that would be so awesome. Just thought I'd ask. Cheers love all your videos brother.
I will definitely do a video on that. I have another one that needs to be done,so I will have to order the metal. I appreciate the kind words as well!
Thanks I look forward to that . Your videos are really amazing. Your a good teacher. I would love to hang out with you lol.😊
What about the ash and cleaning it out? Must be a nightmare.
I just turn it upside down and tap it a few times. I haven't had it get any build-up stuck yet. I will do an update video and show how it's holding up. Thanks for watching!
The lower Temps will cause gas and naphtha before diesel 125 degrees you start getting gas 200 you get naphtha the diesel starts around 400 degrees
As a Marine Corps combat vet, i appreciate your coat.
Everyone in my family has served. I had the coat made to honor them as well as all service men and women. Thank you for your service!
I was doing similar that [distilling at about 400c] running a couple of diesel cars on it but one batch was done too hot and I seized up a couple of injector pumps with tar :-( Any one have ideas about removing tar or not getting it - ie fractional distillation , or centrifuging it out etc - Thanks :]
I've been told to use sulfuric acid and baking soda? I've never done it. It should be in the comments section. If you have any success with the treatment, post a video! Thanks for watching!
You should place a dewaxing filter as soon as vapours leave the reactor
Burn to burn? Wrong method that cannot be justified by free raw materials. After all, clean air is not endless either. There are cheap, excellent chemical cleaning methods with 85-95% efficiency! Moreover, some of them COMPLETELY retain the additives for motor oil - that is, the reconstituted oil can be used both as motor oil and as fuel. How farmers do it in Russia.
I would like to know how that process works. Please send a video link or a link to the process. I haven't come across that option yet,and it sounds much easier. Thanks for watching!
@@karlsoffroad8609 ua-cam.com/video/YUT4ZQMBgVo/v-deo.html The last phase - cleaning with silica gel - can be omitted.
@n.f.2345 ,he is just cleaning the same distillate that I made. He uses an electric distiller, but it's the same principle. I've watched most of his videos, but I just don't have the equipment.
Where do you get the oil from, brother? I don't see the oil pipe
I pump the local oil change shop and local parts stores. They keep me full almost always. I hope that's what you are asking? Lol
@@karlsoffroad8609 This is not what I mean, brother....I did not see how you install the oil line that feeds the burner with oil, how to weld it, and how it looks from the inside.
@azadwlat8359 ,it just sits in a .375 hole drilled through the end of the pipe on the far right of the burner. Small. 375 inch copper line gravity fed from a 5 gallon bucket.
There's a lot of true in what you say near the end of the video. The cost to make this will be irrelevant when you can no longer buy diesel at the pump. This application will be great for the small time farmer or homesteader that wants to continue using his farm machinery when diesel is now longer available to the average Joe.
I like to think I'll be ready. I'm not sure what will happen, so I'll plan for the worst and hope for the best! Thanks for watching!
At 12:00 , I’m screaming at the phone… TURN YOUR FIRE DOWN 1) Your whole “beer keg” needs to be inside another metal canister, as a fire chamber … you’re losing too much heat out of the sides, and the top of the keg 2) Your column should probably be insulated, also 3) Your copper tubing is way too small 4) Your condenser section is way WAY WAY too small - Quadruple the size of your condenser!!!! The product that drips out of the end should be room temperature - or cooler than that!!!! If the product that comes out is warm to the touch, you need to have MORE condenser, yet
It comes out cold,so no problem there. I realize it's not efficient in any way. I'm definitely going to be using a different vessel to hold the oil in the future. I'm just experimenting until I get my setup working. I just used what I had laying around and went for it. Thanks for your suggestions!
@@karlsoffroad8609 Cool, good to know!
you need long magnets and should be close to the coils
They are just as close, if not closer than the claws were. The drill is only spinning about 200-300 rpm, and the motor will be spinning it at around 2500,so I'll test it as is and see what happens. I'll rebuild or modify as necessary. It's just a fun project to experiment with. Thanks for your suggestion!
Try using the claws of the rotor. You only need one magnet round and flat with a hole in the center with North South faces. The claws will carry the field to the stator.
I tried that and didn't get much output.I used two speaker magnets. I thought it would work great and way easier. I have the video of that as well. I'm not sure I had strong enough magnets. Two of them fit nicely between the claws, though.
You can seperate the claws by putting something under each side and put the pully nut back on and smack the shaft, and it will push the sides apart. This video will help you ua-cam.com/video/S-tFQNVA7lI/v-deo.htmlsi=czHL8c2cvAQIaW92
More power!!!!
I'm hoping that when I get it hooked up to my diesel, she'll make some usable power! The impact doesn't spin it fast enough.
I run home brew diesel 20% and centrifuged used motor oil 80% in my military trucks and military generator, lister petter diesel single cylinder engine, they run better off that than pump diesel. I use lister petter diesel paired with 2400 watt pma alternator from thermodyne to charge my forklift batteries, were offgrid with hurricane wind turbine, and 17000 watts solar. Heat home with used oil also.
That's awesome! I'm working on it! My ultimate goal is offgrid totally.
You can clear it up with sulfric acid 1% and triethylamine 1%.
Just same as a military multifuel water heater.
Something I have not seen you try that I had good luck with is taking your oil feed line and making a few wraps around the burn chamber Once it gets hot the oil starts to vaporize in the line and you burn it as a gas.
I will definitely try that with veg oil. I found it to be problematic with motor oil. I appreciate the suggestion. Thanks for watching!
@@karlsoffroad8609 I was running waste oil with some diesel in it it starts to sound like a jet engine when it burns as a gas.. Thanks for the ideas for burners..
Very cool I like the video you did making diesel fuel distillation with a paint can
Thank you!
Dumping it straight in there is a no no it contains solids that are formed with water that need to be filtered out as well as bitumen tar and suspended tars that are not soluble
It's an experiment. I bought a cheap engine for a reason. It seems to run well,so now I'll test the durability. I know that it's not exactly what you should do,just what I'm doing. If SHTF,then I wouldn't have access to any treatment options. That's why I'm testing it in raw form. Thank you for your suggestions on my other videos as well! I always appreciate the words of someone with much more experience than myself.
what do you recommend to get rid of the ''bitumen tar and suspended tars '' . I gummed up a couple of injector pumps with tar 🙂
I run this type of fuel for 12 years it does no harm to any engine if treated properly if improperly treated you will only clogged filters pickups filters and pumps
I made a smaller version of this after watching......it works great ❤❤❤
Awesome, I'm glad to hear that! I will be using this and building an outdoor fire pit. I made some improvements since this video, so I'll show that as well. Thanks for watching!
Strange fuels are bad news. It likes a thick aluminum plate to mount on. Oil consumption is high until it breaks in. I made a 20 mm to 1 inch adapter and will buy a 7 inch pulley for a 10SI alternator. I turned in the blocking bolt so it won't ever get revved. It uses like a coffee cup of road diesel an hour.
I'll take the chance. I bought this motor for testing homemade fuels,so I am willing to sacrifice the motor for the information I'm after. Thanks for watching!
WHAT!? you didn't use the eye-crometer for the holes that you drilled?🤨 Great working burner.
Lol,no,I went with a traditional measuring device!
Very cool, gave me some new ideas!
Thank you! Best of luck with your ideas as well!

Cool project I like stuff like this as its a fun thought experiment 'could I do this if there was an apocalypse' Right now your collecting probably a mix of 'fuels' as your condensing tower starts off cool (naptha etc) and then gradually warms up (diesel or heavier) the longer you use it. What you need to get consistent grade of fuel is a condensing tower that starts at its condensing temp, before you start evaporating your used oil. As well as maintains that temp throughout use. It starts to get complicated. But if you run this current mix of fuels you might get preignition etc in a diesel engine. But fine for a diesel heater. If you want to get super complicated then you could separate the grades out by having multiple drains at different heights (again heated/cooled to their exact condensation temperature.) and bubblers like real oil refineries condensing towers have. Also I was thinking if there would be a way to power this by solar. But not a lot of electrical means to heat up large bodies of oil. Nichrome wire running through the oil? or a small steel dish that you heat up inductively to cook the oil.
I think it would take quite a bit of solar to make the heat needed. I'm thinking a parabolic disc to heat it with the sun would work better? I bought a Chinese single cylinder diesel, so we'll find out soon! Lol
@@karlsoffroad8609 I think Induction cookers can get pretty damn hot. Just have to do smaller batches. You could just set a large steel saucepan on a single induction cooker with a lid and have your tower come out of the lid. Sweet. Look forward to seeing it
Is it possible that the steel wool burned up? awesome video. What about using an old refrigerator condenser as a condenser? That is awesome btw. using waste products to make diesel. I bet if you figure out a way to hook up the boiler to the hvac system of the house it will def be worth it.
I heat all my buildings with the boiler. I'm pretty sure the steel wool burned up both times. That's why I didn't bother with it this run.

Hi from the uk Are you using a propane burner? How much propane do you use to get a gallon of diesel. Keep up the good work
No,I'm using a waste oil burner. I have a bunch of different videos on how I build those as well. I have them in a playlist on my channel page.If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks for watching!
I go right from the oilpan to the fuel tank. Maybe 20%-50%. Even add some old 2 stroke mix gasoline to lighten it up on cold days. Love 12Vs
I've been looking for one,but they want more than new in my area!
Did you have to do anything different with the fuel pump or different filter?
In the distillate from the waste motor oil you get some acids like carboxylic acid which has strong Sulphur like odor... to neutralize acids and some polymers you need to add water sodium hydroxide (bake oven cleaner, drain cleaner) solution, after adding the solution you drain it from the bottom and heat the oil until it dewaters... it takes 20 min for me to dewater my oil at low heat
Thanks, I will treat one bucket and see how it goes! Definitely has a strong odor!
Quick question: How much per gallon is used?
@@karlsoffroad8609 I don't have the exact numbers... but start small and then smell it... if the smell is still present then add more sodium hydroxide... i do 5 grams of sodium hydroxide with 100mil water for 1 liter of oil
