Old as Dirt, Servian SA2 Drill Press Restoration Part 1 (the motor)

Old Servian SA2 Drill Press (approximately early 1950s) It came from a retired boiler makers shed, and he warned me it needed work. Well, he told the truth, and part 1 should show just how wrong I was to take someone's word for a "running" machine. It's not all bad. These old Drill presses are built to drill far larger holes than a machine of similar size from today's manufacturers, the column ...

    I too thought mine was original, but found out otherwise soon after. Very much like yours except the height screw is M4 (brass) . Mine are a bit more substantial than yours in proportion, but only needed 1 slit on a far looser fitting centre-post. The main reason for this is that the slit is cut from the centre outwards, allowing the clamping to happen with far less force required. Cheers from a Sandgroper ;-)

    Hi! I have the same Scripta GX 500! Two questions: have you found a manual for it (PDF or otherwise)? On the spindle head, at the bottom, I seem to be missing the part you referred to as sacrificial. What's is this part, and is there a collet at the bottom of yours, just before the cutter head protrudes? Mine is slightly loose leading to the cutter having some play, and of course producing some pretty poor engravings. I heard deckel parts can work in these machines, but I'm not sure.

    • @thelittleshopaustralia4733
      @thelittleshopaustralia4733 2 роки тому

      Gday, the sacraficial part is the bronze collar. It acts as the depth of cut by running on your work piece creating a physical stop for the tool height. I guess you could make some if you had a lathe. Mine came with a couple of spares. They wear down over time. I hope that helps

    "........ And don't forget to tune in next week, for another episode of PIMP MY VICE !". :D Personally, I'm not too sure about the machine turned finish on the tongue (a bit too "Bling bling" for my little home workshop), but each to their own. And as you needed to re-drill the bolt holes for the jaws anyway, I'd probably have just forgone the separate quick change holders and fitted pins and a magnet to each jaw, then have the pins locate on drilled holes in the vice's castings, which could be threaded for conventional style jaws at a later date if ever needed. That all said, I'm blown away with how thorough a refurb job you did. No corners cut or shortcuts taken. Most people these days seem to think "Renovated" means car body filler in any dings, dents and cracks, rub it down and hide any remaining scars with a thick coat of hammer effect paint. It's a refreshing change to see a humble workshop tool get renovated on UA-cam to a standard where it's future lifespan is most likely going to exceed its previous years of use.

      @@thelittleshopaustralia4733 Back in the day I knew it as Machine/engine turning, or "Fish scaling", and my biggest memory of it was that it's a ridiculously time consuming, boring, and laborious task, and if you made any ruddy mistake you usually had to start from scratch. We used to setup a jig on the radial arm drill, and one of us would spend hours just scuffing little overlapping circles into sheets of alloy using these abrasive hard rubber bobbin things. Pretty sure it's all done by CNC now, but not back when I trained as an engineer. :( I'm not 100% sure what you've done is the same type of process I used to get lumbered into doing (The light's doing some trippy things with it in your video), but the effect looks about the same.

      @@thelittleshopaustralia4733 When it comes to scraping in a machine, I've only done it 1/2 a time. :) I was starting to get serious on the refurb of one on my Victorian hobby lathes, and decided to scrape everything in. I did the saddles base, then the cross slide, then........... I couldn't face doing anymore scraping on it ! Probably didn't help that it was early winter in my little unheated home workshop at the time, but we've had 2 summers since then, and I still haven't revisited the task, so that may be a telling fact. :) I found scraping for flatness and parallelism to be a horrendous, time consuming, repetitive, strenuous, boring, stressful, mind numbing, and unrewarding task, and to be honest, that hobby lathes bed could do with being ground back closer to flat anyway, so it's not even like it was worth all the effort.

    Nice job. I like the jeweling effect. The SP stands for Standard Pattern and there is a HP for Heavy Pattern and an LP which is a Light Pattern. Your vice is cast iron as all the steel vices had steel cast on them. To check that just weigh it, if it’s cast it should weigh 56lb / 25.4kg and if it’s steel it should weigh 49lb / 22.2kg. Keep up the great work. Cheers Stuart.

    • @Reman1975
      @Reman1975 3 роки тому

      I did wonder if it really was steel when I saw the cast iron style powdery chips when he was drilling it. I've got an old "Woden 190/7a" cast steel quick release vices that I got cheap. It looked a real rusty mess when I saw it on eBay, so no one thought it was worth bidding on, but as I looked through the pictures I noticed the cast in "STEEL" lettering on the side. I knew that meant I could weld up and grind any dings in it, so I put in a ridiculously low offer (Probably even below scrap value back then) and for some reason the seller accepted it !!! When I got it home it went straight into a bucket of degreaser for a week, then after that another week swimming in rust remover. Once out of that I found it didn't actually need much work. I opted to grind, file and stone the pitting out of the tongue, then build up the corresponding pads in the main body with weld. It only took a few hours of actual hands on work. Once I'd finished cleaning it all up I thought it actually looked pretty nice in bare wire brushed metal, so rather than paint it, I just periodically cover it in oil, leave it to soak in, and wipe it down. If I ever see rust spots appearing, they get a few swipes with a wire brush, then oiling....... So much easier than repainting chips too. :D It's a brilliant tool, and it's the first vice out of all the ones I've salvaged and restored over the years where I haven't found something else within a few months that I've thought would be a worth while upgrade.

      @@Reman1975 Hi Reman, those old Woden vices are worth saving. My biggest decision when doing a resto is how far to go. I’ve just finished an unusual woodwork clamp that was originally green but once it was cleaned up I was really tempted to leave it bare metal but I also wanted to show how it would have looked when new. I’m more of a ‘nice and shiny’ type of restorer unless it’s something rare or expensive. I see some people’s work really cop a flogging from the comments and it’s usually because of sloppy work but more commonly because of their colour choices but I take the view that it’s their item so they can do whatever they want with it and a coat of paint is easy to change. I’ll have the green clamp posted on my channel in a few days. Nice That was a nice save on your Dawn. Cheers Stuart.

      @@thelittleshopaustralia4733 Hi Mint, your CT 3 is a Carter Tools 3” and was made by Dawn, in fact Dawn made all of Carter’s vices. Carter used to be cast onto the side of their vices but when Dawn changed the design of their vices in the mid 70’s the Carter was changed to CT. Carter also had a full range of g clamps from 2” to 12” in two distinct styles, one style has a curved back which gives a wider opening between the screw thread and the back edge of the clamp and forms a “C” shape and the other style has a straight back which makes the clamps quite narrow. There were a whole range of other tools by Carter but I don’t know if they actually made any of their own. While I will collect any tool that I like, I tend to specialise in Aussie made G clamps and now I’ve added F clamps and sash clamps as well as vices. I hope this helps, cheers Stuart.

    I made nine similar units out of mystery metal for my 9x20 lathe. I made the large hole a fairly "stiff" slip fit and only used one slit. When I cut the slit, I started by using a slitting saw but the slit of one one collapsed on the blade, destroying it. I used a hacksaw to finish the remaining units. For any 9x20 lathe owners reading, I replaced the original tool post base with the Pitkin donut, highly recommended. drive.google.com/file/d/1b-1v8sZKtDkmfDDO8q_7Y6Wbym-itpgB/view?usp=drivesdk drive.google.com/file/d/1b5lvEmbKcAGtVi-ROVvamSjsI7V_qqrm/view?usp=drivesdk drive.google.com/file/d/1b79hLkuLeQM58Zo071tOwc236uD33GY9/view?usp=drivesdk

    As one commenter said: Why use ancient technology? It's about nostalgia and the beauty of manual machines. It's not about mass production. Why have a restored Ford Model T that reaches 25mph for a weekend drive when you can drive a Hyundai at 75 mph? I think you get my point.

    Ok so you won't a quick clang tool post . well hear what i did & I suggest you think of This , so hear I go This is what I did . when you think of it . we have a tool redy made Strong & solid, so how do we convert that into a quick Change tool post. Well i found some tool holder's at a car boot, , so I followed that paten. So in your case I see you have an small aloes paten post. so let me say you have half the Quick Kit you need. to build your { New Tool post. using your four way post }, So how ? Well first remove the present post tool holding pins with new replacement grub screws . Then contemplate. you adores. stile post . & consider how to ached the dovetail within the steel your about to fit within the old tool post & how to fasten to , the new post attachment to be handed, consider cutting a dovetail that can be securer in two way one by grub screws in to the new block you are about to make, which allows the grub scows to enter the block treads & tighten down solidly . now consider the centre of the new block with it new Dovetail mild within it to tack the tool careers you already have, you are at this point 78 % of the way complete. the new adjustment will fit on the new block yet to be determined the plunger that grips the dovetail will be cam meconium operated within the centre jack bolt fastenings , of the original tool holding, pins , i personal like the sold wag Tip that travel up a down within a round drill hole pulling up or pushing down against the plunger wag, that titans the dovetail's I have suggested an idea or tow ., keeping the build deliberately vague. half the fun is figuring out how to Complete the build in you case you have the holder's the lar for way steel base. mine works well no chatter because the grub screws go in to the new block holding it farm & the plunger grip's the dovetail wag tightly pushing the the new tool block you have solidly. i hop you ues the system I haven filmed my work arrow I hope you do . the cost was not a lot , just a peas of steel to develop the dovetail the posh wag was a simple plunger tip with a :- O 'ring to hold it in place. Les , England UK PS . :- The thing is you get to keep tow. sides for sliming up tooling you mat Need to. The peace can be mad as one cut out to fit both sides of the for way tool post in steel i used a Donkey saw to removal the most I had no mill. what I did work well "NO" I never bothered with spending on a quick change tolling & had six of the boot sale , & the two it I want to pack them , never needed them versatile by gum yes . I sometimes ues boring bars , in the turret section , the best of both world's,

    Enjoyed the video. A bit late in the day now, but had you drilled just small holes where your slots end then you would have removed the possible crack starter.

      Hey mate, thanks for the fix. No I havn't done it as I moved on to a bigger and better machine since then. It was working just fine before I moved it on to another. I may make another for my Hercus 260 at some point and I will be putting more effort into tolerances and less trust in aprentice workmanship:)

    by now it is very likely that someone else pointed this out already but here i go, you need to drill small holes at the ... (sorry english is not my native language, bare with me)... base of those cuts. that will prevent (or at least postpone) stress fractures. im sure there is a formula for the size of the holes but you'd probly find that out on your own. edit: another thing, you may want to make the cut for the tools on some other face of the toolpost that doesnt have any relief cuts/slits. that face changes shape when you tighten it and it is not that consistent.

    Very good design. Try and make the lock bolts 2-Allen head bolts to received canterbore on the tool post. Very interesting design

      I explained it in the video. The central shaft is a close fit to the bore of the QCTP so when the bolt is tightened from the side it closes up the gap and tightens around the shaft

      Yeah, you have to take the apron offand completely strip the skirt. The Hercus 260s are a direct clone of the 9" South bend lathes. There are plenty of strip and assemble videos out there. If you can handle his dry and weird way of speaking look up mr pete (tubalcain). He has some simple to follow vids

      @@thelittleshopaustralia4733 thanks mate. I'm also after a 3 jaw chuck for the hercus 9inch model A . Do you know where I could possibly find one. Thanks again.

      You may get lucky on Gumtree. Occasionally someone will split up their Hercus and sell it for bits. Original Hercus chucks are rare by themselves but almost always come with the lathe itself. If you are real keen for one (which a 3 jaw is the most used chuck of the bunch) I would buy another hercus with the 3 jaw and resell it with the 4 jaw. Or you can make up an attachment for an aftermaket one. I had my 9" southbend before I got my Hercus and am unsure if the attachments work together, mite be something to look into
