- Saved this old 1945 surface plate from the abusive clutches of vehicle mechanics:)
"The wing" is branded on it but I could not find any info on the company.
A very good solid casting
If anyone has any info on "the wing" I would love to read them in the comments

You've made it smooth and shiny. But not flat.
No` using the silicon carbide had flatten them to a degree if I remember now I finished them with my DMT plates and the stones nearly ruin them, I used a engineers straight edge to test for light between the two , like I said they did take several hours, and a lot of sweat,I seen this procedure on a American You tube sight this is where I got the idea from,
I also have used in the passed ceramic long belt sander sheets on my home made belt sander,it will take a certain amount down but you have to watch the heat so had to keep dipping the stone in a bucket of water and leaving it for a while,
If you just keep going they will flatten,
Nice video. Thank you. That surface plate is going to take care of you for years. Kudos.
Thank you, still going strong. Apologies for the Dad bod, couldn't be helped in the shed on a summers day
It is gorgeous
I agree. For me,it is of an accuracy and grade that is suitable for anything I would produce. The dings and imperfections are proof of a productive life over the last 78 years.Over time, it'll just get more accurate.
thanks for sharing.
@@fsj197811 your welcome 🙏, wish I had a 3rd plate to really get some flatness back
I use silicon carbide with water on a piece of special glass to flattening my Arkansas honing stone these can take hours to flatten, great exercise,😅
I don`t know if aluminum oxide is harder, but the silicon carbide does break down as its being used ,
Never tried that method. I'll keep that in mind
Graphite is not abrasive at all, it is even a lubricant. So it would be a great exercise indeed.
@@alparjuttner9095 Ha` sorry yes graphite can be used as a lubricant and works well as I`ve used in the past, it was not graphite used on my honing stones `I bought graphite for a different project.
It silicon carbide bought in different grits that I used to flatten my honing stones,
this worked well but still taken a several hours, depending on the honing stones,
Видео о том как делать не надо !
