No one in their right mind would move to the US. Our house in San Francisco is going on the market in 2 weeks ….should make a 2 million net profit and heading to Lisbon. Every 90 days go to Zurich to satisfy rules and then come back to our forever rental,in Lisbon.

My wife and I are in the process of moving to Estreito da Calheta. Overall, we agree, Madeira is a great place to retire to. Here's my list of things people who are considering the move should be aware of: 1. No fresh Jalapenos in the markets! My wife and I love to cook Mexican food, so we're probably going to have to grow our own Jalapeño plants. 2. No poisonous snakes. There might be venomous spiders, but I'v'e read conflicting information on this. If there are, I doubt that they are very common. 3. Driving on Madeira is not for the faint of heart. The country roads can be quite narrow and steep, but also the on the big four line highway (the ER101) you'll find a wide variation in the speeds at which people drive. This means you're going to do a lot of lane changing, either getting out of someone's way because they're going way faster than you, or passing someone because they're going quite slow (including lots of heavy trucks, probably due to all the construction on the island). Just be prepared to do a lot more lane changing than you are probably used to. 4. I also recommend not buying or renting a car or SUV that's too large. We just ordered an SUV that is 175 inches long, and that's probably the upper range of what works for the island. The challenge with having a particularly long car is in parking, since the parking lots and garages are intended for small cars. 5. If you're wanting to build or remodel, keep in mind that you'll be waiting at least 6 month until the project can even get started, and once its started, it will definitely take longer than the initial estimate. In my experience, the stated target completion date on the CPCV does not hold much weight.

Congratulations, 3 years !!! Coincidently we were there around the time you first arrived. We spent two week at the Pestana Village Garden Hotel Funchal in Jan 2022.

What I have read lately is not so much expats who are, or are thinking about leaving, but that almost 70% of current Portuguese university students say they intend to leave Portugal for higher paying jobs elsewhere in the EU after graduation. That concerns me greatly. Countries must retain their educated folks to maintain an adequately strong economy to provide social benefits for everyone. The median age in Portugal is now 46 to 47, depending on the source, versus a bit under 39 in the US.

Always good to see you guys in your videos. I agree Monique. You have to know what you really want before you move anywhere. Some are happy to follow what's trending and that's fine, but trends change. If you move somewhere, but still want to follow the latest trend, you may be unhappy with where you are, again. So glad you guys are happy in Madeira! From just one visit last Spring, we too can see what a special place it is.

Thanks for the video! Very helpful. And since we're all about staying ahead of the tech - definitely time to add in ChatGPT's real time voice translation. It's free to use on the app and is so much better at parsing language than Google Translate. It can keep up with slang and even has a better grasp of the context so you get a smoother and less formal/more conversational translation. I still keep Google Translate language downloaded as a backup for offline use though.

We are still between Canada and Madeira, and will spend the winter in Madeira again. We retired early also, and spent 18 months in Madeira during Covid. Enjoy

I've been living here for the past 13 years and I absolutely love Madeira! I also loved your video and everything you described! I come from Brazil, so obviously our culture is very similar to Portuguese culture, even more to Madeiran culture, I feel at home in many ways, but I come from one of the biggest capitals of Brazil, so I was used to another "social rhythm" and people here are definitely more relaxed (like you mentioned standing on the line at the supermarket, leaving purses on the table at coffee shops and you forgot to mention leaving their belongings on the rock on the beach while swimming for a long time and not worrying about their objects). Great videos about Madeira, I wish to the both of you a very happy life here!

Even though this video is 2 years old, it is the best one I have ever found of traveling with dogs by plane. The content is very on point and accurate, including the time frame to prepare. My family and I flew from Brazil to the US a couple of times and brought our Lhasa Apso in cabin. However, the second trip was completely different from our first one since there was a ban in place for both cargo and in cabin travel for dogs from high risk countries for rabies. Believe me, even though we were extra prepared, it was still the hardest thing we did related to our international move. Thanks for the great information!

Burek and cevapcici are about as Slovenian as are pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs or po'boys. Slovenia has absolutely fabulous cuisine, awesome wines and great beer. Imho, Slovenian cuisine is every bit as good as the food from my own homeland, the neighbouring Croatia. And both cuisines are second only to Italian.

"Loo-blah-nah" is more of a slang/local way of saying it. The correct way is "Lyoo-blyah-nah". Ly or rather Lj sounding same as li in milion.
