This channel provides cookin', cannin', craftin', talkin' and teachin' tricks from the Granny Women of Appalachia in a way only they can share.
Life in the hills and hollows of the Appalachian Mountains was never easy. In the 1800-1900's, often secluded from "modern" medicine and commodities, families learned to live off the land and pass medicinal practices from generation to generation. Women who managed to survive the rugged mountain life and childbirth were commonly referred to as "Granny Women". The community often sought the wisdom of these respected Granny Women for life's daily struggles.
Join us as we share Appalachian stories, recipes, crafts, and more from Granny and her kin.
Born in 1942, Granny was one of seven siblings, 5 girls and 2 boys. The daughter of a school teacher and a factory worker, Granny grew up cooking and sewing and learning the Appalachian way of life. She passed on her traditions to her children and grandchildren...and now on to you.

My husband is 69 and his grandmother used to make rolls similar to these. She cut them with a biscuit cutter and dipped them on both sides in melted butter. The difference is, there was no fat in the dough, so they ended up being somewhat chewy. Thanks for the video.

A lot of people think Appalachia was all or mostly Scots/Irish, but in fact Germans were a large part of the settlers. Many German protestants landed in Pennsylvania and over generations, moved southward through the mountains, into Virginia and Tennessee in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. German folklore: In the so-called Raunächte [12 Holy Nights] between 24th December and 6th January, according to old stories, Mrs. Holle aka Mrs. Percht, Wotan aka Odin and the Wild Hunt move across the country. These are nights when the animals can speak. In which - even today - the houses and stables are smoked with incense, and in which you are under no circumstances allowed to wash clothes. *Why shouldn't you wash your clothes on January 6th?* On the night of January 5th, the "Rauhnächte" [12 Holy Nights] end and January 6th is the day of Mrs. Holle. Because of the prevailing darkness and cold, it was assumed in earlier times that the gates to other worlds were wide open during this time. Dark figures and spiritual beings can penetrate the earthly world during the winter nights, because they are more powerful than usual during the rough nights. Witches, demons and shaggy monsters could take over your house and yard during this time if you are not careful enough. There was also the danger that the creatures could get caught in the laundry hung outside or even in clotheslines and thus bring great harm to their owners. Some traditions also speak of an army of riders flying through the air in a wild hunt. The concept of the wild hunt probably originally comes from Germanic mythology. Even though there are several different stories about it, it is always said that the Germanic god Odin and Mrs. Holle lead this army. With them are the souls of the dead. All those who see the wild hunt are swept away by it. *If Mrs. Holle gets a hold of a piece of the laundry, she turns it into a shroud and someone in the household dies.* Likewise, the one who hangs out the laundry could be taken away by Odin's army. Women were particularly at risk during the rough nights. You weren't completely at the mercy of beings from other worlds. Odin and Mrs. Holle, for example, could be kept amicable through offerings such as bread, pastries, milk or alcohol. These things were then placed either outside the door or under the fruit trees in the garden. Because of the supposedly many dangers, people retreated into their homes for many centuries at this time, stopped everyday work such as baking, cleaning or spinning and told each other stories by candlelight, probably also stories of Mrs. Holle.
@@KateSheffield-jo8tl wow love this!!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
