Robert's Guitars and Gear

Приєднався 23 гру 2020
As a newer guitar player, I have cycled through a lot of guitars and a lot of gear to figure out what works, let's talk about them. I am a small channel and all gear I discussed has been bought by me and I have no outside influences unless I tell you otherwise. I am a fully paid Fender Play subscriber and I received their normal discount on most of their products that I purchased.

Taking the Fender Special Edition Player Strat From Good to Great

A quick overview of the Player Series Stratocaster and the mods that I chose for it. Though this one is a special edition, any Player strat is a solid guitar and a great starting point if you want to do more with it.

Why I Still Love the Squier Bullet Mustang HH
Переглядів 1,1 тис.4 місяці тому
This was one of my very first guitars and remains a huge favorite. It is absolutely awesome for newer players and players with small hands, and it just plays great. Nothing fancy, just a basic guitar that surprisingly does the job in many styles of playing.
The Squier Paranormal Strat-o-Sonic, a great guitar that’s great for small hands
Переглядів 1935 місяців тому
The Squier Paranormal Strat-o-Sonic has all the attributes that are important for an electric guitar player with small hands, smaller stature, or a newer player. Most important, they are just great guitars that also sound great. This is my favorite of all my guitars.

Single Coil Strat Shootout!
Переглядів 17510 місяців тому
Strat or S-type guitar owners have many choices for single coil pickups. We are always looking for the "chime" of Fender clean tones and a biting crunch tone that cuts through the mix. In this video I compare stock Squier CV, DiMarizio Area 58/61, Fender Deluxe Drive, and Eart EALVS single coil pickups, plus looking at the effectiveness of copper tape shielding in each guitar for 60 cycle noise...

You could mod out the Eart for a couple hundred dollars and it would instantly be a $3,000 guitar. It has stainless steel frets too if im not mistaken as well?
@@MrMfalzone For sure. I added an SD humbucker in the Bridge. It is really rocking now.
@@MrMfalzone Yes it does have stainless frets, they are great.
After much research and watching this video, I found one for sale and ordered it. I have heard the saddles are not easy to adjust for intonation. Have you found that to be an issue yourself? Thank you, great vid.
@@scourneene Thanks, no issue for me.
@@robertsguitarsandgear In the specs it mentions that the radius is at 12". In my research many say that a 9.5 is better for chord changes.Others argue that 12" can be just as good that way granted that the neck isn't too thin. With smaller hands have you noticed a difference in playing the 12" neck while changing chords? For the better? Thanks a ton.
@@scourneene I truly have not noticed a difference for me from 9.5 to 14”.
@@robertsguitarsandgear that's interesting Robert, thanks for the reply, so many people say it's easy to make chord changes with a 9.5" radius or flatter but others, such as yourself, mention that it didn't really effect their play much at all or that they didn't notice. I guess I'll see for myself soon. Thanks for your time.
How can you not mention radius for playability beats me
@@muktamao Thanks. For me it has made very little difference, maybe surprisingly.
I'm thinking about getting one of these in Aztec gold but I want to get a partscaster conversion neck (I have small hands) do you know if it has a tele neck or a strat neck?
@@talentosa57 For Classic Vibes at least I think they are the same. It is a very comfortable neck for small hands.
is the neck pocket a telly pocket or Stratocaster? That’s the question.
@@ratbird3290 yes that's exactly what I meant, thank you!
@@robertsguitarsandgear as mentioned in another comment, what I actually meant was, what size is the neck pocket? Is it a strat neck pocket or a tele neck pocket?
@@ratbird3290 Thanks, best I can say is that looking at a CV Strat and the Nashville side by side the Neck joints look quite similar.
Appreciate your review. Very informative.
@@paulallen3557 Thanks for the feedback.
Great video thanks for bringing some attention to this gem! After 2 years the only problems I have encountered are the tuners-to match the color scheme/black tint of the guitar the appropriate locking tuners are expensive. Then the electronics. No, not the pickups and such! The volume and tone knobs are loose and rattle and seem not level or plumb to the top. The input jack gets loose as well. Mine has narrow/tall frets which can make fretting chords high up the neck difficult, but you can really “dig in” on lead as the pros say!
@@dougchapman-ew7jc Sorry for your problems with it.
I got it at $700 so all is fixed. And as you pointed out it’s the beautiful top, the mahogany, the set neck, and the pickups that make this guitar a gem. I’m surprised you don’t see more of these guitars-from local bar bands to music videos.
Hey rob im considering this guitar but I’ve heard people having intonation issues. Have you experienced this?
@@miffygames9099 Never for me, I’ve had two of them.
What Fender trem did you install?
Off of Reverb: Fender American Vintage Jaguar Jazzmaster Tremolo Assy Nickel 0054466049, Fender American Vintage Jaguar-Jazzmaster Tremolo Arm 0054473049. They really work great.

You need to order the Fiesta Red Limited Edition if you want the maple fretboard. Order directly from Fender to get 20% off. (as of July 2024)
should the string height be the same the whole length of the neck?
@@rickyparr8001 Not necessarily, for setup we usually use references like the 12 fret, and may not use the same action height for each string.

Wow Robert!! What an out standing and helpful review!! The Mustang Bullet has been on my radar as of late after I bought very beautiful looking Suire Strat that has been giving me lots of pain and grief with my small hands. I just hope I can find a bullet in Sunburst!!
@@scourneene Thanks for the feedback, good luck!
@@robertsguitarsandgear Would you happen to know if the newer Squier Sonic Mustangs, which replaced the Bullets, retained the narrow necks or did they thicken up?

@@makaihlya Thanks, no, no complex switching like that.
How is the tuning stability on this guitar? Looking into purchasing this
I would say the Harley Benton st Modern plus beats both guitars and its even a lot cheaper than the Eart guitar
I love this review. Thanks for posting this video.

Life In the Fast Lane was a warm up exercise that Joe Walsh used.
Yep i have small hands and arthritis in my worn out fingers. I love my Strats and Teles, but its the stretch i can't do them justice. I'm on the limit of finger from 2nd to 5th. Gonna check out a Jaguar or Mustang because of the scale.
@@soulsoul67 Good choices for you for sure.
I’m curious to know if Jaguar pickups can handle more drive or distortion than the ones on a Jazzmaster. Love the Jaguar but hate 60 cycle hum.
I got one it's fine, but also Ibanez S series are good and light guitars

What about a fender jaguar?
Not a bad choice for scale length, but the Necks are fairly thick. The Squier CV versions are better for that.
Robert, you recommeded D'Angelico Atlantic, in one of your highest categories. I bought and had to return a B-stock D'Angelico Excell SS, but had to return it because the controls were defective. I wanted a hollow or semi-hollow for its lower weight, and the scale length of the Excel was 25 inches. Now I am getting ready to try again. Did you only evaluate the one Atlantic model, or did you try any of the hollow or semi-hollow models? I think you only evaluated solid body electrics in this video. Do you have thoughts on easy to play hollow or semi-hollow electrics?
Hello Glenn, I'm sorry you had such a problem. I only tried the solid body Atlantic, I had a total of three of them over my time. I never had an issue with them. I think for hollow or semi-hollow the ergonomic question will be the thickness of the body. Weight should be good, and of course the Neck ergonomics go with their shape and dimensions.
Almost all cheap guitars have somewhat thick necks. That includes most Harley Benton, but also EART, Squire Debut, Sonic (strat), Volgoa, Grote, Firefly, Leo James, IYV, Fesly. All these are thicker than fender standard. Donner strat is an exception. I guess you go to Ibanez but find an Ibanez 22 fret is difficult. My s521 is very nice to play but the SA series and SASEX is thicker than it strat.
I just bought an S521 and love the Neck and the weight. Video to come.
Player is louder. Ppl tend to view louder=better
Nice guitar Robert..I have the player strat with a Floyd 1000..cheers
Excellent!
Boutique pups aren't as brittle sounding
I liked the stock pickups better.
They work well, just voiced differently.
❤
Must not play very much
Pipe down a cup
Honestly, I think you would need a better mic to really show the difference. The mic you're using doesn't seem to have much bass response and probably isn't positioned ideall either. That said I think the Dylan sounded a bit more full and a bit more clear, but both are good pickups.
The Squire Bullet doesn't seem to be available anymore, all I see are the Squire Sonic. 24 in scale length. Does anyone know how similar these are to the Bullet?
The Sonic is quite similar to the Bullet except it does not have the belly or arm carves. It is still quite a think body so that might still be OK.
did it come with a case? is tuning stability better then orginal LP Models, is frets polished well? please answer, i am thinking about getting one but i there is no guitar shop where i live
No case or gig bag. The frets overall were great, the overall quality on the guitar was really fantastic. No issue with tuning stability either, locking tuners and a compensated nut. Really overall great guitar.
@@robertsguitarsandgear thank you for your reply sir, i am truly glad
No difference at all to my ear. Both sets are too bright
Thanks, the Neck really is darker but both are eq’d to my older ears.
@@robertsguitarsandgear I hear ya, I'm old too.Very set in our ways us old guys. LOL It's pretty amazing how far Squire has coe up over the last 10 years or so. I have a Strat CV50's and it plays and sounds beete than either my American Standard or MiM Starts. I'd love to get a P90 version, but I'm all filled up, no room for another guitar. Cheers

Welcome! Take a look at the Squier Strat-o-Sonic, it is my new ergonomic champion guitar.
More so then the Bullet? @@robertsguitarsandgear
@@scourneene Nothing is more ergonomic than the bullet, but the Strat-o-Sonic is a better overall guitar.
I have a pretty dead ear and i cant tell much difference in most pups except in rare cases. Dylans P90s just sound better.
Yep. I'll play the Fender pickups and think that they sound good, then play Dylan's and can't believe the difference. Thanks for the comment.
Wait a minute… they don’t come with a maple fingerboard do they? Do you work for the CIA or something?
It’s who you know for sure! In my case a Fender.com limited edition.
I think I’m view 1000! Anyway I bought one of these. Right at this moment (when I’m not typing that is) I’m installing Monty’s something something Danish Pets Tele pickups. Nothing wrong with the classic vibe ones but … let’s see what I get out of pickups that are literally worth more than the guitar ha ha! Good video sir!!
Thanks very much. Let us know how it turns out.
Ok I’m a recently retired vet and am just like in the research stage- what is a small hand measure at?
Thanks for your comment and thank you for your service! This is an important question. Hand size is a bit of shorthand for hands that are truly smaller, and hands that are relatively stiff due to being a newer player or having medical issues. Very small people over time can play any guitar as their hands stretch out, whereas you can be a new player with bigger hands but they are a bit arthritic and not yet limber from a lot of playing. My hands measure 8.5" from the tip of my thumb to little finger when fully extended. I have played long enough that I can play a guitar with a 25.5" scale length and full-thickness neck, but thinner necks will always be more comfortable to me.
Really interesting review ! Thank you for sharing !
