I use an Orange Crush 35 as a practice amp in my living room. The Orange Crush series is really great and offers features that are attractive not only for beginners.
As a guitar teacher, a gear nerd and someone who is consistently poor, I find myself constantly recommending the new Line 6 Spider V MkII. Particularly because when paired with a Used FBV Shortboard MkII, there isn't another rig on the market with those kinds of effects and tone versatility (that also functions as a speaker) for that cheap. Sure, Spiders histortically get a bad rep. But they've really stepped up their game with this one

I was jamming with friends in my basement with the 20RT, it worked great for that.
I also cannot recommend the Peavy Vyper 1 enough. Lots of built in effects really fun amp.
