Elewys of Finchingefeld
United States
Приєднався 30 лис 2011
Hi! I'm known as Elewys of Finchingefeld in the SCA (aka Karen, in real life...yeah, I know...I'm not THAT kind of Karen) and I have dabbled in a lot of fiber arts, but my real love is historic tablet weaving. I'm here to teach you how you, too, can create amazing historic tablet woven pieces, whether you are a beginner or very experienced! I also share some advise and trade secrets to make your experience easier and more enjoyable.
You can watch the Weave Along videos in any order, but the idea was for beginners to start with easy patterns and work their way up to more complex patterns. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, or just drop me a note to say hello and share what you've been making. We're all friends here!
If you want to show your appreciation for my work, I have a "tip jar" at ko-fi.com/elewys. Thank you very much for your support!

Dublin Dragons 4 hole
A four-threads-per-card version of the well-loved Dublin Dragons pattern. Original extant piece was done in brocade, so this is an adaptation of the original design using another period technique.
The patterns I create or find on Pinterest are pinned to my board here: www.pinterest.com/elewys/. I will also post it on my blog, which can be found at ladyelewys.carpevinumpdx.com/2023/10/06/dublin-dragons-4-hole/ and will be available after the video goes live.
In this video, I'm using 3-D printed cards that my husband made. They are 2 1/2" wide and about .7mm thick.
Schacht cards, which can be found at Yarn.com, thewoolery.com, Paradise Fibers or Schachtspindle.com. If you would like wooden cards, I have found some nice ones at www.etsy.com/shop/VytuVatu along with several other treasures for your weaving pleasures!

* Maurice Brassard 8/2 cotton, which I purchased at woolery.com. It comes in 81 different colors and is really lovely to work with.
* 20/2 or 60/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors. New web site! www.eowyndewever.com

Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (this one is not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design but these cards are Oseberg reproductions: www.thingiverse.com/thing:1806753, though I find that they are a bit thicker than I prefer.) Also, 1 mm thick cards can be found at www.thingiverse.com/thing:673389, or thing:4043270.
* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.

Weave Along with Elewys, Ep. 34: Hallstatt 186
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
How to weave a gorgeous tablet weaving pattern from 500 BC Austria. Several pieces of tablet weaving were found in a salt mine in Austria and have been recreated by expert tablet weavers. I will show you how easy it is to re-create this pattern. If you want to use swivels to accommodate the twist, cards numbered 7, 8, 10 and 11 need the swivels (and border cards). For more history, see ua-cam.c...

I’ve gotten so much help from her videos and instructions. I’m very new to inkle weaving and for some reason this one is weaving the pattern on the underside of the band. And I can’t figure out why.
Yes to Full real time warping pls
Simple and smart. Nice idea
Just what the doctor ordered for these difficult times we are now living in. I'm actually weaving Baltic pickup on an Inkle loom while I await delivery of new tablets and a new shuttle. Love you Elewys. You're the best!
Can this be made with merino wool yarn?
I love that you added the history!!! Omg. And your outfit is adorable. Thank you for this video!!
My chaotic mind will probably never allow me to weave this way, but I was spellbound throughout your tutorial. Truly mesmerizing! And that pattern was so beautiful and perfect. 😍
I’m an advanced tablet weaver and I return to these easier patterns all of the time because they’re “audiobook” friendly and give such lovely “instant” gratification. Any time I do complex ones, especially skip-hole ones…. I can listen to music only but anything more would mess my focus up. Hope you are well!
La forma de enseñar es muy buena , y son hermosos!!
Could you show how to do it if you are using the hedles?
Amazing! Great history information ! Thank you! Love weaving!
Can you do a Damascus edge for card weaving?
so I hope you know that you have worked your beak loom wrong , it’s been a year now and this first time I watched you I hope you’ve learned
Winter is soon to be here again and there is no sign of you... I do hope you and your loved ones are well and wish you a happy time. Love, always, Su
Hi! I'm new at this and have already woven a bit, but always with simple patterns that go back and forth with the card turning. This is my first complicated pattern attempt and I'm wondering, are the cards supposed to align when re-starting the pattern? would all cards align by row 16? Because mine aren't, but my pattern isn't coming along very neatly either so I'm not sure if it's supposed to happen and I made a mistake, or if my mistake is elsewhere. Thank you so much!
Your videos and explanation are really wonderful. I have taught myself tablet weaving just by your videos after seeing someone here in the UK demonstrate it at our re enactment day in Malmesbury- celebrating King Althelstan’s 1100 year anniversary. I have a lot of stress in my life at the moment and it fades away when I hear your voice, watch your demonstrations and do my own bands. Thank you so much. Sue
This was perfect. Thank you
good morning, just dropping in before I need to go to work. Have been playing around with a mini inkle loom, was wondering if you had ever thought of weaving on one, or have ever done an inkle band on one. I hope that all of your projects go exactly as you want them too. Have a wonderfully blessed day. Kathy from Idaho, this is under my husband's name so that is why it will come across as Marvin.
he was a norse farmer. These farmers are not to be mistaken for being like modern farmers, but more like the gentleman farmers of georgian, and victorian england who were very wealthy landowners. Farm land was very valuable and came with timber, mining, and fishing rights
I enjoyed watching you sley the reed and then the heddles, and tie onto the back beam. I'm still so new at weaving, so excuse any terminology errors. Your humor is so right on, had me laughing.
so pretty! the link to the pattern is dead but i think i can easily recreate it from the video (easily for my first actualy project lol)
I love watching you. You have a very calm, soothing voice. I’ve wanted to do letters and pictures forever but it just confused me. This video cleared everything up, and I think I’m brave enough to try on my own with my own patterns. Thank you❤
Times like these I feel lucky to have a beard that protects my face. I live in Maine, went on a last Winter Walk to McDonald's it was 12 F and the cold weather didn't exist anymore because I wore pants and a hoodie, and overalls and a jacket over that It's amazing what the right clothes can do for winter I used to do with snow shoveling and wow, it heats up the body quick Enjoyed the video!
Oh this helps me so much! My brother made me a loom that looks similar to the schacht. So no directions and the internet is full of so many slight variations. I was getting so confused. This explanation made sense to my brain. Thank you!
I've been watching The Chosen and I began to be interested in ancient textiles and how they were made. Came by to see how a weighted loom works after doing a little research and I have to say, I love your video. The witticism, the music placement; all of it is fantastic! Thank you for being you.
When I warp a band like the one you warp here, I thread through all cards at once, using as many balls of yarn as there are holes. So this band I would first use four black balls for the edge cards, thread each hole from one ball and tie them together at the four yarn ends. Then I go back and forth making the warp and let one card off on my forward and one on my back turn. Then I tread all the rest of the cards from two black and two pink balls and continue till I let all the cards off. Then I change places and turn the cards according to the pattern. NB: this can only be done if the card has two colours, otherwise the pattern would be wrong.
Linen is wonderful, but the tensure must be quite exact as it does not give
Firstly, I adore you and your beautiful tablet weaving. Your tutorials are stellar and so enjoyable to watch. I do have a question about this solution which I am anxious to try. I'm wondering about just putting the swivels on during initial warping when you can anticipate that some threads always only go forward (like the border threads, for instance), thus causing twist to accumulate. It seems like it might be easier to place the swivels during the initial warping. Thank you!
Wow! I learned to do this when I was 17. I had forgotten how. I was 17 in 1970. I'm excited to relearn, and this time, the right way! ❤😌
What type or make of Tablet Loom are you using?
Maravilloso. Saludos desde el Lago Titicaca Perú. Gracias.
Oh, Elewys... I know this comment is a few years late, and I don't know how things currently stand with this, but I'm sending love your way. I've learned so much from your channel and have been weaving up a storm these last few months, in no small part because of you. Thank you for everything, and I hope everything is well with you. ❤
That new type inkle loom!! 😮❤
Also, bigger beads loom, too!
Bigger not including big bead because not enough room on loom but can making more biggest loom that challenges!
Fantastic.
These are some great ideas! I´m currently working on a bag strap, after learning how to weave from your videos :) I have one question though: is there a way to cut through the finished band without destroying it? Because I have woven more than I needed and would like to use the rest for some other project. I was thinking about sewing with the sewing machine left and right of the future cut, before actually taking the scissors to it, but maybe you have some clever alternative? Would appreciate your advice 😊
Absolutely mesmerising!
Precioso patrón, y parece fácil con la paciencia, amor y tranquilidad que transmites, muchas gracias por tanto arte que aportas y maestria para las principiantes, maravilloso! Gracias 😍🧶☺️
Do you always rotate the cards clockwise?
What an excellent repurpose idea for your lazy kate! I use a lot of ribbon, so I am so happy I found your video as this is perfect for ribbon work and it saves the planet as well. Always love a win-win. Thank you ever so much.
Mine is all spaced out between each pick, my weaving thread is it's own row visually, and then the brocade on above it and not on top why is that??
Brand new here, don't even have cards yet. Question; but, if you flip the border cards from z to s and s to z, doesn't that make the weaving go the other way?
I am so grateful for this pattern. This is my second band to weave ever and what I love about this is every four counts. The card should be back to where they started so when I made a mistake and lost my account, I was able to rotate everybody and get them back in place. I’m assuming that like knitting there’s ways to learn to read your weave so when you get lost, you know where you are. I haven’t gotten there yet myself.
So, what do you do with all the yardage left unwoven? Is it trashed or used for something else?
I kept looking for a small table to use with my ankle Bloom, and then I found this and thought I can buy the ankle loom and the table all in one
Very helpful!! I just started Tablet Weaving and have been looking forward informations like THIS VIDEO!! Thanks a lot!!
I'm loving your videos. I haven't woven in years, and never tablet -- of course I've started out with a difficult design. LOL. Learning all sorts of things while I weave along.
Thank you for an excellent video
This is beautiful I have a large foot treadle band loom I could adapt to use for this. Hmm you always inspire me to weave. Got started first o the Beka rigid heddle loom then inkle. I learned to use my inkle loom for card weaving watching you. Thanks for sharing.
What if you don't have a loom
See my video on Making a Warp Weighted Loom (Using Household Items).
I kinda want to try some tablet weaving but I'll have to see if it's possible to set up a loom in a college dorm
