You make a brave and lovely picture in your bright tunic, like a cardinal in the snow. And we were vouchsafed a glimpse of your ancestral fire hydrant. A merry, Merry Christmas to you and yours, and may your coming year overflow with joy, health, and prosperity! And tea!
Damn, that's the wet 'n heavy stuff. I'm not surprised your tunic and hood were sufficient. (And I love that tunic!) All you need to keep yourself comfortable (or not-miserable) is to cover your head and legs. It's been -10C in southern Ontario these last few days, and the snow isn't quite so wet, but the wind is a beast. I wear knitted stuff under my hoodie and over my face, and I have an unlined, full-length Inverness-style blanket coat with a waist-length cape attached over everything. It's enough to hold the heat in and the keep the wind out.
The freezing rain hit here, and on the way home on the bus I finished my medieval sleeves. Wool lined in linen. I pull them on over my hoodie sleeves because modern fabric just does not do it.
Heia 🤗 Thank you so much for the demonstration 🙌 I hope you and your family hava a fantastic holiday 🤶 And the same to everyone else ☃️ Here we have a meter of snow and -10°c😀 Merry Christmas everyone ☃️🤶☃️ Best wishes from Norway 🤗🤗🤗
It's fairly light as it's falling--it's really the best time to shovel. It warmed up a bit that afternoon and became really heavy and wet, then we got a deep freeze overnight and everything else became solid ice.
Times like these I feel lucky to have a beard that protects my face. I live in Maine, went on a last Winter Walk to McDonald's it was 12 F and the cold weather didn't exist anymore because I wore pants and a hoodie, and overalls and a jacket over that It's amazing what the right clothes can do for winter I used to do with snow shoveling and wow, it heats up the body quick Enjoyed the video!
❄️Hope you have a lovely festive season❄️🇨🇦 Always happy to see you on here. The delivery service has lost my card ,weaving Christmas present but I will be ordering again in the new year. You have created a another person who wants to card weave!😊 thanks for sharing.
I just found your channel! I got my eldest daughter and inkle loom and cards and was trying to make her a playlist. So glad to have found you and enjoying binging your videos! Happy holidays to you and yours!
Well, I have ONE teen who was doing school work at the time, and the big kid who was at work. I think the middle kid was visiting her boyfriend. Either way, it was me or nobody at the time, and it was a fun experiment.
I live in the PNW too but all we got last night was freezing rain, which is coating everything. I went to go my mail and that was an experience I will not be repeating until stuff melts. The hood you were wearing reminded me of the Sami Luhkka, something I want to make. Happy yul and happy new year!
I like winter time. Winter in Australia that is. It gets cold in Melbourne but due to the elevation not cold enough to snow, which means no need to shovel footpaths. Merry Christmas to everyone here from down under.
Merry Christmas. We’re finally having a hot Christmas up here in NSW too. Getting the backyard cricket set up now. Boys are practicing for the Boxing Day’s Test. 😉😉😉 🎅
Hope you and yours will have the happiest of festive seasons. I have only recently discovered you, and love your videos and enthusiasm. You have given me a hobby, for which I am very grateful. I even managed some bookmarks for the family on an improvised small "loom". If Santa brings me some money tomorrow, I will be buying an ingle loom! Nadolig llawen (as we say in Wales) from Karin X.
Hehe, I've been making myself warm clothes but I don't usually wear them out of the house because in winter here everything gets coated with salt, and I don't want to have to wash it out of my wool skirt too often if I forget to gather it up when I sit in the car. And I shovel snow at work, I need to not be soggy so I do use some unnatural fibres in my usual get-up, but exactly what does depend on the kind of snow. I also have to be careful with my layers because I warm up pretty quick frm the activity, and if I'm not careful I will sweat and then get chilled once I stop moving, so I usually start out with a scarf but it gets chucked into the car after I warm up cause I need the ventilation! I wonder if the lyrepipe on the hood could have been used to keep it out of your face? I gave up on toques cause they don't block the wind in my ears (yes I'm Canadian) and hoods because they won't stay in place, and use ear covers now, either earmuffs on a headband, double layer polarfleece ear band, or one of those wire framed earwarmer things covered with polarfleece that only stays on if my hair's braided, not if it's down :P Glad you got only enough snow to be fun, where I was up north at Xmas we got about a foot, friends of mine in Michigan got easily double that, and at home they got a few inches of snow, then a few hours of rain, then another 8" of snow then high winds to blow it all around. We came back a day early to try to clean it up, the plow wakes were pretty bad even though the accumulation wasn't that much where we were plowing. Where it hadn't been disturbed, I could get my shovel in between the layers and do a pretty good job but anywhere there were footprints or tiretracks, I couldn't get down to the pavement, and neither could my hubby in the skidsteer... thankfully we've got a warm spell forecast for a few days later in the week and with a bit of salt to help we should get most of it melted before we get back to our usual frigid temperatures!!
I haven't shoveled snow in more than three decades (grew up in New England, but been living in Florida the past 31 years). Just watching you shovel snow made my back hurt, 😂. I wish we could go back to medieval clothing. So much simpler. Just sayin'. Though, medieval clothing in Florida in the Summer... probably not a good idea 😂. It's like a blast furnace in the Summer, here, the past few years. It's terrible. Can't convince my husband for us to move back up North.
Linen breathes nicely! I find it's cooler than cotton on those hot, humid days. We were in Florida visiting last year around September when it was good n hot. I was disappointed that I didn't see a single gator while I was there! Even on the St. John's River. Maybe next time.
Gosh darn, I wish I was your neighbor, ma'am! And when it comes to shoveling snow, I've learned that short sleeves are actually the most comfortable, I get really warm when I do it! How'd you do with today's freezing rain? Walking along, the snow made the WEIRDEST sounds!
That's interesting that you are required to shovel the sidewalk. Many years ago I learned never to to that. My dad used to just about kill himself every winter shoveling the sidewalk in front of the house. Somebody slipped and fell on the cleared sidewalk one day and sued my Dad. He was told in court that shoveling it "enticed" people to try to walk on it, and if he had left it untouched it would have been the pedestrian's own fault for trying to walk on an obviously hazardous surface covered with snow. No good deed ever goes unpunished.
Wow...that's awful! We have city and HOA laws/rules that say we need to clear the side walks of snow or foliage. I didn't put any salt or sand down, though, so last night when I stepped out, it was slick! I stepped onto the snow on the edge to maintain my footing.
Actually I remember snow-shovelling and I always thought, that it's safer to have the snow trampled down and put some gravel on top, because the leftover bits of snow on the sideway transform to ice and make the sidewalk slippery...but the authority-guys... ;-) 🎄🎄🎄Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year🎄🎄🎄
In our climate, when it falls, it's a wet snow. People walk or drive on it and compress it down. Then it deep freezes overnight and we have cobblestone ankle-turners and ice rinks on the roads. Look up videos of icy roads for Seattle and Portland and you will enjoy a series of bumper cars sliding down the hills.
If you just tromp it down, it makes ice, and adding gravel to it, the gravel heats up in the sun and melts through it then you'e left with ice again. Where I live we have little plows that do the sidewalks and spread a bit of salt after they're done. Sounds wasteful but I've been doing small-scale commercial snow removal for five or six years now and we've tried a lot of different things, a lot of shovelling and a little salt is the best way to keep things safe.
Love your channel. Just trying my hand at tablet weaving. Would you show us how to unweave a few rows? Going backwards should be simple, but in actuality the twist action really locks in those threads. How the heck do I back up without losing my mind?
What a fun video! Did you used to have a video on sewing your tunic and other historic clothing? I believe it was you who recommended FabricStore for linen (thank you for that by the way), but I don't see anything like that in your videos now - am I misremembering? Thanks for all the work you put into these videos!
Great idea! Great test!

Very pretty snowfall.
Hey, if it worked for the Little Ice Age......The neighbors are probably like "I should ask her if she got that at Patagonia..."

Merry Christmas from Iowa we had about the same amount of snow but OMG the winds. Its -35 now but last night -50 wind-chill.
I know--I've been getting my Midwest Weather Reports from MN and WI. You guys got some wicked winds! I remember those days!
I live in the PNW as well. We get a lot of snow every winter. I live in Eastern Washington. Love your channel. Thank you for sharing all your weaving.

Fantastic outfit! Good job shoveling all that snow, it looked super wet and heavy.

Happy Solstice, Happy Christmas! I grew up on a corner lot, and shoveling was one of my jobs, but we got light and fluffy, not heavy and wet.

Hello
Merry Christmas to you??
Years ago I played in the SCA. I think it is time to get back in.
I would love me a neighbor that shovels the snow in a medieval fit. Alas, as of now I am the neighbor
This is awesome. Proves you don't need a 200 dollar puffy coat.
Nope! Just add more layers! Heck, I found natural fibers to be warmer than poly anyway!
