Earlier this year, bassist Hadrien Feraud messaged me saying he was about to borrow an instrument from fellow bass player and Jaco Pastorius fan Robert Trujillo to record and film new material. It was not just any instrument, but the legendary Bass of Doom. The bass was used extensively by Jaco, both live and in the studio, until it was stolen in 1986. Decades later, the Bass of Doom was found in the hands of a collector in New York City, and after a lengthy legal battle, it was purchased by Trujillo. A couple months after Hadrien first told me the news, I got to hear it in action. My jaw fell to the floor as I listened to the newly recorded demos. I'm sure Jaco was there in spirit through the whole process. And now, a little over 6 months later, the public finally gets their first glimpse at this awesome body of work. This one's called "You". Enjoy. linktr.ee/jacoarchive
That douche bag collector that kept the bass & wouldn't give it back to the Pastorius Estate is a piece of garbage. Taking it to court & finally selling it to Robert Trujillo for an astronomical amount is just absurd.
But it most literally is the same instrument, rebuilt. Priceless cars are restored and they are still the same car. As if he started playing the moment Jaco played his last note, there is no better player in the world to pay tribute.
Fantastic playing. I've heard plenty of covers and tributes. But that bass - it is just, unmistakable!! Beyond the tone & technique - there are just characteristics I've not heard coming from any other instrument.
It does not get more 'Golden' than that. Such beauty in composition, such excellence and emotional content, It brings your soul into a bit of heaven for a while. Thank-you.
If you were in high school as I was back in the 70s Jaco was a soul taking bassist . I couldn’t figure out why he haunted me so. Some younger listeners may never feel the excitement and context of that time. It was Stanley and Jaco in the down beat readers poll. It was heavenly. Bass of live on.
@@b2meb2meb2me I mean, hard to call that the same bass lol... The entire thing was in pieces, even the body had to be redone... I still think Robert should relinquish ownership to Felix.. Well. Think we can all agree that this piece of wood hasn't been played to sound like "THAT" since 1986 I guess. "THAT " sound. "THE" sound . Very reminiscent of tunes such as "Chair in the sky" or " Goodbye porkpie hat" from Joni 's Mingus album. Or even WR's Speechless or Current affairs. Or Jaco's Work with Michel Colombier. That's what I call "the Deep Jaco" and that's quite a great job at channeling exactly that while playing your own lines, H. la classe T.
I think that he probably more would have seen electronic music in the 90's and probably have been inspired by the likes of all the warp records musicians back then and he probably would have noticed the influence he had on squarepusher specifically but that's just me jaco always seemed from what I've seen at least to be a very forward thinking guy and I feel like he probably would have liked to move with the times but sadly we'll never get to know 😔
Amazing how every time this bass appears on UA-cam the horde of Jaco snobs and purists come out of their caves to brandish their pitchforks and opinions on everything and anything Jaco, because everything except "4 string bass of doom" is apparently a cardinal sin to their great bass god. The bass was destroyed and restored, get over it. Jaco was always a rebel and literally made his name on the foundation of going against the norm. His son plays a 6 string. His nephew plays slap bass with Tech9. Jaco would have loved this video and Hadrien Feraud is probably THE authority on studying and channeling Jaco's spirit of playing. And any bass player worth their weight in salt knows 90% of tone comes from the individual players touch and fingers, not whether or not it has a flame maple top or whether its legally owned by Metallica's bassist. Anyone who has a problem with those factors is a pointless snob with nothing constructive to offer in terms of opinion. End of story.
People feel how they feel. You think and feel in gross exaggerations and more than a little of the righteousness you're decrying. If the subject of Jaco inspires fanaticism and strong emotions, even juvenile ones, it's a testament to how personal it is to so many people. Few artists --few humans at all-- could ever hope to have that effect.
Agreed whit every single word, they don't care that this bass is still able to EXIST thanks to Robert, they just HATE that he owns the bass, we can hear this music on 2024 thanks to him and no one else

Nonsense. None of those things have any impact on the sound of the instrument. The tone is clearly there. Also you have no idea what state the collector who bought the stolen bass kept it in. Just because it’s refinished has zero ZERO ZERO impact on the tone.
Story goes that back in the mid-80s, Jaco threw the bass down a concrete stairwell in a fit of rage and the instrument was broken into pieces, presumbly beyond repair. He took the instrument to luthiers Kevin Kaufman and Jim Hamilton who managed to restore it to playability using wood veneers (such as the lovely Quilted Maple top you see on the body now) to hold the broken pieces together. IMHO its a miracle that after such a major reconstruction the instrument still retains much of its distinctive voice and sonic character.
I’m just curious 👀 wouldn’t Hadrien have borrowed it from the Pastorius Family? I thought They acquired it thru Robert after being miraculously found and beautifully restored?
