Hi! I’m Nicole - originally from Australia, I now live in the US with my husband and 4 kids. I like to consider myself a “beginner’s teacher”, helping you perfect the basics so you can build the confidence to master more complex projects. My motto is, if you can sew and cut a straight line, you can sew any bag. And if you can't sew and cut a straight line yet, I can teach you how! I love to share all the tips and tricks I have picked up over the years. There is a Socrates quote, "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's (sic) writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for", and that is how I think about bagmaking.
In 2020 I began running sewalongs for Geek Garden Fabric which led to the creation of OKSew for easy sharing of tutorials. The name came about from how many times I started a sentence with “Okay, so…” in my early videos. If you wish you can follow my page Lion & Loch, where I share my finished bags.
So, let’s get going!

Tiny Cata Crossbody from Oro Rosa Patterns - Official Tutorial
It is with great excitement I bring you another tutorial for Oro Rosa Patterns, the Tiny Cata Crossbody!
The miniature version of the popular Catalina Crossbody, Tiny Cata measures a petite 7.5” wide, 4.5” tall and 2.5” deep. It can be worn as a crossbody, sling, or used as a wristlet. It has a single main compartment that is closed with a double pull zipper.
This is an intermediate pattern but I take you through every step in this video so you can confidently create your own beautiful bag. It is assumed in the tutorial that your pattern pieces are cut and interfaced with markings from the pattern applied and as such these are not demonstrated. I am using vinyl and woven for my exterior, cotton canvas for my linings, and sewing on a domestic Juki HZL-DX7.
This pattern utilizes rivets and zippers and is finished with binding. The full list of materials and tools can be found in the pattern instructions. If you need further instruction on applying zipper pulls to zipper by the yard please see my video: ua-cam.com/video/ijli0BGm4vo/v-deo.htmlsi=4akTGpxlLROek-Tl
If you find my tutorial to be helpful and decide to purchase this pattern, I would love you to consider using my affiliate link. It costs you no extra but provides me a small commission that helps me to continue to make tutorials such as this one: ororosapatterns.com/r?id=45ltmd

Methods for Sealing Cut Zippers - An OKSew Quick Tip
Wonderful bags because you’ve made some wonderful fabric choices!! I love your tutorials and will definitely make this bag.
As an Aussie I love love love hearing your Australian accent popping through every now and then! Thank you for your amazing tutorials - new subscriber here :)
Can I just 🙌 THANK YOU 🙌 for being SOOOOO Helpful and GENEROUS with your FREE Patterns, and tutorials ……I’ve only recently found you, but today I used a stapler for the first time! 😁 I’m REALLY enjoying watching you and learning new tricks! 🫶🧵🪡
You're so skilled and talented. You make gorgeous bags. I might have to try that pattern next month. You make it look easy, but I know it would be hard for me. I really enjoy learning new techniques.
Where did you get clips? Thank you for the video. I always appreciate your attention to details.
Thank you! These are the clips I use: a.co/d/01f5eQv I remove the rubber cover from the tips.
Wow...that makes all the sense. Mind blown, sometimes geometry class can be beneficial. Lol
I have a little hole by the zipper tab after sewing the edges. Just wondering if my zipper is too short or this is the way it should look. Please let me know. Thanks!
Yes that is how it will look, it is necessary to allow the corner to poke out neatly. I will be doing more videos showing different styles of zipper closures on this pattern (but can be used on other patterns too), some of which eliminate the gap, but for most styles the gap is part of the construction.
@ Ok. Thank you. Looking forward to your new videos!
So happy to find a sewist who understands the importance of accuracy across the entire process. Thank you!!
Thank you! ☺️
Can I ask what kind or brand of double sided tape you use ?
I use Kesote branded double sided tape, I get it from Amazon
Thank you! This makes SOOOO much sense!😊❤
Thank you Pam! I’m glad it helped.
Found you while searching tutorial for Koda Cross Body Bag. Is yours similar but bigger? it will be my first bag and anxious. I have to make sure i have all the hardware. Can i use a normal zipper? Yours look so simple to make.
Hi Danielle! Yes it is similar but slightly bigger, I made it to the specifications of a good friend of mine - it is wider and a bit taller. It can be done with a regular zipper. Bag making can be intimidating but just takes a bit of patience and practice, if you are anxious about starting may I suggest something that has fewer pieces and only requires a zipper to get used to the techniques involved in sewing bags - I have two pouch patterns, the Betty Pouch and the Pythagorean Pouch that are also free on my channel here that will help you practice some skills. I’m on vacation at the moment but I am more than happy to answer questions when I am able, I have a support group on Facebook “OKSewists” that you can join if you like to get more guidance too. You can of course dive right in with this pattern though, you may surprise yourself with how quickly you build your skillset!
@@OKSew474 Thank you so much for your reply and for your offer to help. I will look into the 2 pouch patterns and the facebook group for sure. Have a great vacation!
Have you listed the types of brand of thread you use and the weight of thread for the different projects anywhere?
Hi Stephanie! I have not, but I can tell you that generally I use Gutermann polyester thread that I buy from Wawak. I use the Mara 100 (Tex 30) for all construction and for about half of my topstitching, and Mara 70 (Tex 40) for topstitching the rest of the time (depending on the color I need). I sew on a domestic Juki so the best thread may be different depending on an individual’s machine.
Thank you so much for this excellent explanation!! May I ask from where you have purchased the floral print exterior of the pouch? Would love to buy some. Thanks again!
You’ve very welcome! It’s from Wolf & Rabbit custom fabric, however it was some time ago that I purchased it so I’m not sure if it is still available.
I've made probably 20 of these bags and have been SO frustrated with how my top corners by the zipper are always folded in or pinched-looking. Never occurred to me to topstitch only where the zipper starts. Thank you for this tutorial, you helped me troubleshoot quite a lot! 😁
You're very welcome! So glad to hear it has helped you!
Thank you so much for your explanation! What kind of felt do you use? Is it necessary to use felt and interfacing? New sewist over here and I love making pouches?
I used fusible fleece - thermolam or heavy weight from Pellon. I prefer to use both interfacing and a stabilizer (fleece in this case). Interfacing will give your fabric structure to make it easier to work with, while stabilizer will give your project shape.
How would you suggest sewing in bulk..can you make a video on it ,ik its not related to this video ..thanks in advance
Thank you for the suggestion! I can add it to my list, are you looking for suggestions for patterns to sew in bulk or strategies to use to make it go more smoothly?
@OKSew474 good idea both sounds great to learn..thanks for responding
Thank you for this lovely pouch. I have made my first one and loved the process. My only question is regarding the size of the foam piece. You mentioned using a comic book card being 7” x 10.5” as the perfect size. I don’t have one of those, but when I cut a piece of paper to those dimensions it was too long for the pattern.
I’m sorry that the measurement I gave didn’t work, to be honest I’m not sure why that has happened. The pattern that I used for the video tutorial was quite some time before my channel gained some popularity and the original pattern was hand drawn on a sheet of paper. When I had it digitized it’s possible the size changed a bit, but if is also possible that I misspoke! May I ask what the finished height of your Logi pattern piece is? Mine ends up about 11.25” tall give or take so 10.5” would be 3/8” from the top and bottom, then I snip off the corners.
@ Thank you for replying to my query. I traced the pattern onto the plastic sheet omitting the seam allowance for directional prints. It went together perfectly, except that it only measures 10.5” from top to bottom. It’s not a problem, I was just wondering if I’d missed something. I made them for a Kris Kringle gift here in Melbourne, Aust and they were a huge hit. Thank you once again for your beautiful pattern and excellent tutorials. Have a very Happy Christmas from a very grateful subscriber. 💖
What kind of tape do you use?
I use Kesote brand double sided tape from Amazon in 1/8”
I would have loved to see the rivet setter, etc. in the description so I can find the tools. Great tutorial. Thank you
Thank you for the feedback, I will endeavor to add more product info in the descriptions of my videos. I generally don’t when I am demonstrating a technique more than a product but if it would be helpful I can certainly add it. The table press I use is the DK98 from Kam Snaps but it is no longer available (I got mine almost a decade ago), it was replaced by the DK93. I have an adapter to be able to use different dies on the one press, any of their presses with interchangeable dies would be my recommendation. Kam Snaps is a reliable brand.
@@OKSew474I use jam snaps. Love the brand. Thank you! I’m impressed that you answered. So many don’t bother.
Glad to help, I may not always be timely but I try to reply as much as I am able!
Wow! I did not know this and, yes, I have had that bubble in my zipper. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this video. The tips are brilliant.
Thank you. I really appreciate your tutorials have the pattern included. I have learned so much. What really attracted my attention are the carefully explained tips which have improved my ability to produce items of a higher standard.
You're very welcome! I'm glad you're finding the tutorials helpful.
Thank you! That is a so very good method!!!
How can I make this pattern smaller for a coin purse?
Hi! When you print you can select a smaller percentage, based on the finished size you are going for. This video is for scaling up but it will show you where to adjust the settings if that is something new to you: Scaling Up With Poster Settings - An OKSew Quick Tip ua-cam.com/video/sFi89P-gWlo/v-deo.html I do have a coin purse as part of the Betty pouch pattern, Perfect Corners, Perfect Curves: The Betty Pouch ua-cam.com/video/G5FaowwR00U/v-deo.html
I also just found you !!! Grateful for your knowledge and sharing! Now a subscriber!!!!
Glad to have you!
This is by far the BEST tutorial!! I have been binge watching boxy pouch tutorial hoping to find a good one. Glad I got this on my feed! Thank you!!!
That is high praise, thank you!
Thank you for the tutorial. The turning with the help of the little bag is cool - I don`t like handsewing the lining.
It’s such a great method! I have a video with more detail if you are interested: Save The Pockets! - Hybrid birthing method with no ridge and no popped pocket seams ua-cam.com/video/yvGIOJ99ZMA/v-deo.html
Wow , thank you
Excellent tutorial, thank you.
You are very welcome!
When I do appliqué on complex pieces with lots of points and turns, I first draw the stitching line on the piece with a chalk pencil or self erase pen. It eliminates all that stopping, checking, readjusting, in addition to giving me a very precise stitch line on the finished item. It also help a lot if the pieces are starched a bit for more stability.
Thank you for the tips!
I’m a newbie but I don’t see a list of type of fabric you used can you share ? And are those metal fabric clips ?
@@rosac8168 they are metal alligator clips for lanyards and glasses but they are excellent for sewing; I have only recently started using them and I am finding them to be a great investment (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08P72N5BV/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=AI2RDAU9D85OZ&psc=1). For my appliqués I am using a few different types of faux leather vinyl - marine vinyl, promo, glitter vinyl. I got mine from my scrap box but most are from My Punkbroidery. My main exterior is Star Dust vinyl from there also, and my bag lining is cotton canvas.
Another great tutorial. I love the blue vinyl you have used for the bag ❤
Thank you! It’s navy Star Dust from My Punk Broidery, it’s a fantastic line.
Great explanation! Thank you!
Thank you for the great how to! Always a joy to learn new things. FYI I have made a couple of Penny Pouches. A great way to use up scraps
It absolutely is! I am so glad you have enjoyed the Penny!
Forgot to say I subscribed as well.
Glad to have you here!
Enjoyed every moment and learned many valuable skills. Thank you from sunny Queensland.
I'm so glad that UA-cam recommended your video in my feed. I've been binge watching this morning and they've helped me so much. You are a wonderful teacher!! Thank you so much:)
Thanks so much! I’m so pleased you are finding them helpful. ❤️
What kind of fabric do you use? This is amazing Thank you for sharing your tips
My fabric choices vary depending on the project; for this style of pouch I find quilting cotton interfaced with light to medium interfacing to work best with cotton canvas or lightly interfaced cotton woven for the lining. In my “More Tips for Top Zips” video I cover using thicker materials.
Hi Nicole!! Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving. Also after the festivities if you could tell me how much to offset the zipper for the mini logi pouch when using a premade zipper it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! I absolutely want to help you, I’m not quite following what you mean when you say to offset the zipper - do you mean how much longer to make it one end so you can still sew it or are you referring to the seam allowance when sewing it to the curve?
@ yes, how long to make it one end. Thank you!!
@@OKSew474 do you think for the mini 1 1/2” would be enough!!
Yes I think so, I just came here to suggest 1.5-2” will be enough extra! Sorry for the slow reply, kids are home so I’m not able to be as quick. I can’t wait to see your finished pouch!
@ thank you for responding; really appreciate it!!
Do you have a lined version?
I do not but you could follow the full-sized instructions for adding a lining; I know people in the OKSew Facebook group have tried it. Some have also lined with HTV for a thinner option.
❤ I hereby declare that this is the perfect video! Love 💕 this method! Everything is just right! Clear instructions, clear video, audio and camera angles. I like the use of a stapler! Thank you very much! 🥰
Thank you for this very generous comment! I’m so glad to be able to be able to help.
The link says not available. New to this. What sn I doing wrong?
Glad you found it!
Never mind I found it
Where do you buy your fabric?
I have many different sources, favorites are Geek Garden Fabric, My Handmade Space, Oh So Pretty, Blended Thread Fabric.
Thank you soo much for Shaving. You are a wonderful teacher
Thank you!
That pink floral fabric caught my eye. Where do you purchase your fabrics? Excellent information!😍
That particular one is from Wolf & Rabbit custom fabric.
Love this tutorial. I do love the zipper jig, easy to get pull on.
I’m so glad you have a technique you like!
Can I use regular foam and strips of woven fuse to fuse it, i have lots of foam but not fusible .
Absolutely! Another option is to cut it taller and baste it to the top & bottom edges with a zig zag stitch.
@ thank you for your feedback and for all your great tutorials!!
Thanks!
Thank you 🥰
Excellent. It looks looks very professional. That is extremely helpful. You're a smart cookie.
