OH! I don’t know if I should continue watching your videos 🫣 I never have given vinyl any attention , it didn’t interest me. Now you have me wanting to sew it! I feel I’m standing on edge of another adventure. Girl! Your videos are so educational! My fabric bags are so much better and everyone comments on my sewmanship due to your tips and tricks and explanations of why to do it in “this” way. I’m so glad to have found you! Was only joking in the beginning! I’m a big fan!
It is an awesome adventure that requires a ton of knowledge. Look up bag making That is where I found a ton of info because vinyl is used in purses a ton. I love it and just finished my second bag. I used a singer heavy duty sewing machine and it is strong enough. Good luck friend 😊
I have been working with edge coat for a while now, but never knew about that base coat!! No wonder my edges looked so different than what I see in the stores! Thanks a ton!!
Excellent tutorial. Thank you! I think I'll hold off with vinyl materials for now until I'm really proficient at making your patterns in woven fabrics. I haven't yet begun since I still don't have my sewing machine unpacked from moving and a spot to set it up for working. To me, this process is like a cross between soldering and using gesso on a canvas or other project. Tedious, but well worth the time and effort, especially if you plan to sell your projects.
I have not worked yet with vinyl, leather or cork. But I’ve been curious about the edge paint. You have made this process less intimidating. Thanks so much! 😊
Wonderful video! I would like to add that if you sand in one direction, you will get a smoother surface. Also, best practice is to pour a bit of the paint or base coat into a small dish and use from there. Dipping the tool or skewer into the bottle introduces contaminates and will ruin the paint or base coat. And if you use the gum trag or Tokonole to any project, vinyl or leather, you really can’t add paint. The paint will peel off over time .

Interesting video. I've never heard of edge coating. The green roller tool - does it have a specific name? Is it something that is meant specifically for crafting /sewing vinyl type materials .? All I can find on Google is very small traditional style paint rollers. The paint - you say you can wash off any paint spills on your hands - what happens if the purse gets wet, does the paint come off? Does it set firmly (and at risk of cracking and flaking)? Thank you. Nov'24. UK. E❤
Hi Eileen! The tool is commonly referred as a leather edge dye pen. The Edge Coat that I use is oil based. I can wash the paint off my skin when it isn’t fully dried but it will stain porous surfaces. Once it dries it does not come off vinyl surfaces without a lot of effort, and is formulated to withstand bending so if applied properly it won’t crack or flake.
@OKSew474 oh, thank you, i didn't think about leather work, just googled craft/sewing /handicrafts . I've seen leather dyeing with oil based dyes on a TV programme, wondered then if the dye transferred if it got wet or was rubbed - now I understand why it is safe to use it on leather. bags. Thank you. E♥️
I found it at Walmart, I’ve just added links to the items I use to the description to make it easier to find! www.walmart.com/ip/17130293?sid=68bd4725-9f17-4a67-80e2-7c93eb9401ae
I appreciate the beauty of the finished project, but, the cost of it, charging by hour is not worth it. Id never be able to sell a small section of vinyl like this for what it cost in time.
That is completely fair, especially for these tiny coin purses I used to demonstrate! Something to consider, the technique is the same for more complicated raw-edge wallet patterns out there that would be a better return on your time. I tend to save up my raw edge projects and do the edge coating all at once which is more time efficient. I do like to edge paint in my kitchen while my kids are playing, I can’t sew when they are home and awake as they are still young so edge painting is a good way to be creative if I can steal a few minutes here and there!
I think it's beautiful, don't get me wrong. It's simply not cost effective for me at this time. I do thank you for the tutorial.. you are very good at it . I saw 1 other video on it and the edges were sloppy and drippy looking. Yours are super nice@OKSew474
Thank you for this in-depth tutorial. The best I’ve ever seen. Lucky me the day I found your Channel.
Thanks so much!
Thank You! Absolutely loved this tutorial. I've never thought to use a skewer to fill in the gap! I use a hanging sock dryer to hang my items to dry
That’s a great idea!!

May I ask where did, you purchased the 3M 1500 sandpaper? I tried looking for it with no luck. I like the emery board style.
