It’s called Mobi (pronounced Mo-Bee) use to be owned by Shaw now Roger’s and the fleet is moving towards electric assist bikes. Oddly enough the city is also finally looking into letting LIME Uber into the area as cities in Metro like Richmond and the Tri Cities have the system in place but, Surrey has BIRD Canada. Unlike Toronto or other cities due to the nature of Metro being 21 municipalities and cities working together we have multiple systems around different cities. Come back to Vancouver soon and check out the Canada Line and ride a Lime scooter around Richmond or take the EXPO Line to Surrey and ride around the intensive segregated bike highways/Hydropaths around the city of Surrey!

Great video as always! Edmonton really needs to close the existing underground downtown high floor LRT loop by infilling the Railtown and MacEwan University stations as well as like you mentioned, rename the existing Macewan Station to ICE District especially since to the north will be the second phase of the venture with almost a dozen high rise residential towers marketed as ICE District North. Ironically, if you research the story back long enough was in the late 70's going to be a downtown mega development called "Downtown North" which was later pitched in the 2000's as a skyscraper apartment district known as "Aurora: City of Light" and an LRT station of some sort was always planned for the site however when Rogers Place was built it really over-loaded what was meant to be a very small quiet station... If I could suggest anything? That would be to add a second Northern platform open on game days like the Stadium station was redesigned to add capacity for large events by closing the overcrowded tunnel and adding a larger, wider standing area at grade instead...

    • @morethantransitt

This segment of the line is going to be amazing. While there are obvious downsides to being a streetcar instead of an actual LRT or Metro, the upside is that the line runs through the areas of the city with the most potential for transit orientated development. If you follow the alignment on google maps, you'll see that 80% of the areas that it runs through are grid-based streets, which definitely isn't an accident. Compare this to Ottawa's O-Train, Calgary's C-Train, or even the old Capital line in Edmonton. They all, for the most part, run alongside or through huge Stroads, Highways, and industrial areas with very lackluster potential for transit orientated development and walkability.

The whole project was designed to link existing and future TOD developments with actual service being secondary. In the short term it leads to longer rides than what would be expected with a more direct route but with future growth being concentrated onto these largely under-used and dying mall sites? It makes sense from a city-shaping perspective in the long run... I just wish the project was open 20 years so when I could have used it! Former MacEwan CFAC student here and the Jasper Place station will stop literally outside the old orange campus. That would have cut my commute from 90 minutes to like 45... The card validator was for an older presold ticket book where the tickets were printed on a poster board, inserting the cardboard ticket into the validator would stamp the ticket with the location, time and date as well as punch out a notch. The notch was because originally multi-ride tickets were also sold so each validation would be a separate line on the punched card. Yes, it was very old school, no scanning involved but that was the latest in the early 79's and 80's. You can still purchase the prepaid tickets at convenience stores in packs of ten but each card are single ride only though I believe they do forever tickets instead of set fare prices now. Calgarians are basically ROTFL when you tried to punch your paper receipt thinking it was a scanner...

The original Blue Arrow program (a precursor to a BRT program) to evaluate the market for the first LRT line now known as the red line, included an on demand minibus service using Flxible minibuses serving six bedroom communities out of Heritage and Southland stations. The passengers would call a dispatch number with their address and destination and a minibus would pick them up in ten minutes. This was to avoid having to increase the scheduled routes to those neighborhoods just to properly evaluate LRT demand. I feel that in keeping with this concept, select neighborhoods could have autonomous vehicles serving as a form of PRT service as feeders to the LRT/BRT services as basically a manual version was used in the pilot program which justified the LRT in the first place...

Thanks for your videos! A few observations to share: • Summer tends to be a lighter season for Calgary Transit ridership, with more users geared to destinations/events - Stampede, CFL football, some festivals, Bowness Park on weekends. You'll even see riders use buses as a multi-modal option when going upstream before/after recreational floating down the Bow River. (They bring their deflated rafts on the bus!) • The airport bus no longer charges a special rate at YYC. It now accepts a standard fare there. • Max Orange continues to blossom, with the introduction of high-frequency daytime service on weekdays in Fall 2023, with a respectable 20-minute service in the evening. • Introduction of a Primary Transit Network is expected in Fall 2024.

@@morethantransitt The flat, inflectionless tone of the LRT voice doesn't exactly help matters. Just got to the potion about The Quarters (which is my stop). With regards to our Chinatown, it was originally focussed at the corner of 97 Street and Jasper, a bit to the west of the station. But in the 1960s and 1970s, there were a lot of attempts to "fix" it with the bulldozer because of too much poverty and things that attract poverty. Canada Place sits on top of what was once the focus of Chinatown. Some portion of it displaced east into Boyle Street (The Quarters), and some portion of it displaced north into McCauley. Boyle Street Chinatown initially held on because it still had some of the original Chinese-owned businesses and community (on account that some of original Chinatown spilled east of 97 and Jasper). So, various Chinese cultural and seniors facilities were built there. But Chinatown North became the focus of migration in the terminal 1970s to 1980s during the post Vietnam War refugee settlement wave (bringing a mix of various Vietnamese and also more ethnic Chinese from SE Asia to the area). And Boyle Street (The Quarters) got another 40 years of the bulldozer and largely turned into shitty surface level parking lots owned by real estate speculators. Meanwhile, a lot of the Chinese, Vietnamese and other East Asian populations have migrated away from the core to suburbia. There's still some Chinatown left here, but it's definitely not what it's used to be.

@@morethantransitt Chinatown North does manage a certain vibrance, even if it looks shabby in places. It managed to move into a bunch of ex railroad industrial land and that created opportunities. But over time it's become not so much strictly the focus of the Chinese community, it's become a focus of them alongside Vietnamese, Korean Philippine, Salvadoran, Laotian, and Somali and other diasporas. But, despite being a highly productive neighbourhood, it's been treated for decades as somewhere for suburbanites to drive through on their way to downtown. It gets to be clogged with traffic, but almost none of it stops there. Periodically, some cosmetic bandaid is applied, but not much is really given back for what is taken. Still, it persists.

Even with its faults and flaws, I am glad they finally opened the Valley Line LRT. I personally would love to see a revival of the original Edmonton Radial Railway lines because at its peak in the 1920's it had 90+ KM of lines with a city population of around 58,000 people... And that's I guess what's in the newest vision document for Edmonton Rapid Transit... Some sort of commuter rail/express line to the airport from downtown via a new crossing near the Lower Level Bridge, up Scona Road possibly in a tunnel then crossing over to the CP ROW near Whyte Ave... And of course a revival of streetcars along critical major avenues like 118, which I fully approve of!

I'd highly appreciate an LRT line running down Whyte Ave. This corridor is an obvious gem for transit! Also, all the cities with streetcars need to make their returns to streetcars one day!
