I love driving, especially long road trips, but I also enjoy transit because I don’t have to focus on driving, cycling for the the fresh air and simplicity, and walking because there’re so great paths and amenities in my area. It’s about the right tool for the job.

This came up on my feed right after a Hello Road video called "I'm a Car Enthusiast That Is Starting To Hate Cars. Here's Why." It was really interesting and refreshing to hear a car collector and enthusiast actually call out how ridiculously expensive car ownership is and calling out the same issues urbanist UA-cam has been talking about for years. It's in their best interest to eliminate as much of the traffic and danger from the roads as possible, they want to have fun driving after all.

As a car enthusiast, I 100% agree. I love driving but I hate commuting

This is great, there really is a distinction between true car enthusiasts / hobbyists vs people who drive simply because it is the default choice or only choice.
In addition to the fact that fewer cars on the road means a more enjoyment for the enthusiasts, I also wonder if there's some resentment from the enthusiast community when they start talking about their hobby and people instantly associate them with traffic and road rage, almost the reverse of how many bike commuters don't want to be associated with sports cyclists.

Came into this video with an open mind. I'm a car enthusiast who restores and modifies old 80s and 90s Mercedes, I'm someone who doesn't like seeing cars that only need a little TLC turn into more land waste.
I agree with urbanists about how awful and dangerous "stroads" are. Also technology in New cars is so bad for driver focus, partly why I prefer older cars.
There definitely is a need for better public transit in the U.S., if we were to make driving tests more in depth and strict while also strengthening our public transportation network it may result in people who shouldn't be driving not obtaining a license, While also providing an alternative mode of transportation for them.
A big mistake I'm seeing in some locations is the lowering of speed limits arbitrarily, while also doing nothing to change the road in which the limit is being lowered. From a civil engineering perspective it's best to narrow the road and/or plant trees on the sides. That way the road itself tells the driver to intuitively slow down.

Yes! I completely agree with you! The better technology in assisting drivers or even take over the driving responsibilities for them really decreased the focus!

@@morethantransitt Yes! Let alone people falling asleep behind the wheel. And it's a fact that distracted driving is a huge contributor towards pedestrian deaths and traffic collisions.
I learned to drive and still drive a car with no traction control and a manual transmission. Anyone who learns on vehicles without modern assists usually has good control and attention. I sometimes worry about being rear ended by a Tesla on autopilot.

More people using public transportation = Less cars on the road.
Less cars on the road = Less congestion.
Less congestion = Saves fuel and makes driving more enjoyable for those who love driving especially car enthusiasts.
Emergency vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances can also benefit from this, they can get to their destination in time :)

If it tells you anything nobody in their right mind would take their classic cars on infastrucure like Katy's 27 lane freeway because accidents (especially rear end collisions) many when they take their classics out for a cruise stick to older parts of town and older surface boulevards instead of highways. I ask you this, if the enthusiasts and collectors don't trust our comically overbuilt highways with their older cars why should you trust them with your new car and likely unpaid for investment? And that's not even getting into how unsafe these overbuilt highways are compared to a normal street or road.

Public transport is autonomous driving invented 150 years ago. Literally everybody wins if the current market of autonomous-driving buyers were given a yearly pass for a fast public transit. Car transit is important when quickly scaling up a populated area where barely any infrastructure exists. This is how the car industry bubbled worldwide in the ealy 20th century-Citroen 2cv was marketed as better-than-walking on barely road-looking surfaces of rocks and dirt and old GM automatic transmission shifters have the L and R gear right next to eachother so you can get out of a mud hole by quickly rocking the car back and forth. This is also when intense RnD in locking/limited slip differentials was being done. SUVs on barely 2 inches of sidewalls on their tires used for commuting only their driver on a flat asphalt road is a temporary absurdity of our current times.
