This feeling of isolation also applies to people towards the other end of their lives. My grandparents decided to move into an assisted living facility just a couple years ago, and although they're with many of their friends, it's obvious that they feel isolated not being able to easily access the outside world anymore. There are shuttles which take them to grocery stores and other local amenities, but these are only provided at very prescriptive times and only go to a limited number of destinations. So instead they choose to drive, which is incredibly dangerous considering their age (they've gotten into multiple accidents recently). I can't begin to describe how upsetting it is to see their freedom taken away. You can see them aging much more rapidly day over day as a consequence.

Thanks for sharing! It's truly a sad story of how limited the mobility is in some cities!

We are creatures of convenience. If it’s not safe, comfortable, and easy to get out, we won’t 🤷‍♂️

It all comes down to how we designed our cities, roads and public spaces!

Yes. I say that often, we are creatures of habit and convenience.
I was at a #ThinkBike workshop by the Dutch Cycling Embassy in Kitchener, Ontario and they said something like this to us about one new development. "If you can develop that neighbourhood around transit and bicycle infrastructure first, then the people who move in will more likely know anything different. Rather than trying to change it in the future, which would be harder."

I fully understand the feeling of not being able to go places because you can't drive as that's what I felt while staying at a house in the United States. I felt imprisoned as there were no activities nearby and it just felt... soulless.
Now that I'm back to staying with my grandma in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada I'm free to go out thanks to the bus and SkyTrain system. Also, I see more kids out while in BC while I never see children out while in the United States or in more car-Centric parts of Canada.
Children deserve to be free to explore and play, but as many people pointed out, car-centric infrastructure inhibits children's freedom and independence.

Children being able to explore their neighbourhoods by themselves is a great way to learn as well!
