Clawing Back the Addon Arms Race - Sounds Good Makes Sense #49
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Ion Hazzikostas mentioned a desire to "claw back" some functionality from addons in future updates. What does this mean, what challenges will they need to overcome, and how can they pull it off - if they even can?

In today's episode, we examine a question from a recent survey that Blizzard has reportedly sent to a handful of players, asking if they'd prefer a deaths-based system similar to Delves instead of the current timer-based system in Mythic dungeons. What are the reasons for and against such a system, and what potential issues would need to be avoided? Also, I'm giving away two Waveborne Diplomat’...

Where Does Timed Content Fit? And More - In Search Of Answers #8
*insert single sentence take here*! And that's why I'm right!
that hat is dope where you get it
Just break DBM and Weak Auras., and make it where those types of add-ons cant work anymore. Everyone can help Elvui and the raiders will have to learn to not have those. Then Blizzard can stop making the fights require a degree in physics to understand. In wrath there was an addon that drew over the world and you could see exactly where the slimes were going in the Patricide fight, trivializing the encounter. Blizzard broke that one fast and made it where those types of add-ons cant work. This really isn't that complicated to solve.
Tux cats are the best!
I just imagine trying to play my resto druid without addons. No timers = can't ramp for damage, when my whole spec is literally designed around 'preparing' for damage. It would be even worse on my disc priest. Default raid frames? Good luck tracking the 6 or 7 possible hots/buffs I can put on players when the default frames only display 3 buffs at a time.
Awww, new kitty! Welcome, Swabby! What a cutie. Ah, the Add On Discussion. I really appreciate you going through so many of the talking points, and looking at them from different perspectives. I find this topic a bit tough because it's often talked about just from the perspective from one type of content without thinking about it from another. It does feel like the most volume is around primarily high end PvE, which honestly just looks impossible to do without addons (Stand where? For how long? But near that person... but not THAT person.... and don't cross that cloud of GOO! Dispell who? How often? Oh and btw... HEAL!). But it does also sound like a lot of high end PvE'ers like it. On the other hand, for PvP it feels absolutely ridiculous to me that someone on the opposing team can track thinks like cooldowns. It's a really weird loop of logic and irony in if addons make things easier, the encounters need to be more complicated/complex for them to be engaging for addon users. It's also tough because what's difficult varies person to person. Is it how fast you click something? Is it deciding what ability to use? It is moving to a location? Is it repeating back a pattern? Is it using vehicle? Do you volunteer for something or randomly get selected? Or is it jumping from one ledge to another? What people thrive at and enjoy the challenge of vs what people detest will vary greatly from player to player, which feels like an argument for addons or more in game customization. Even though, there is a lot of pressure to get it right because people want their rewards in the most efficient manner. Tough call. Sign be up for pattern recognition any day, but man... I still fall off bridges. Thanks, as always, for the thoughtful discussion!
I remember in Wrath as Ret I used a /castrandom macro with the four attacked listed, so I could literally just spam one button like an Arcane Mage and do all the damage.
I love my class weakauras. They tell what is going on without telling me what to do. Playing my class with default ui would be such a step backwards. I play better and enjoy my class more as it is now. However, if I had to rely on something like Hekili I would just quit as that would mean I've gotten too old or too stupid to think for myself.
Adding the 'Quest Helper' addon in to the game as a normal feature was one of the worst decisions ever made in WoW. I will die on this hill.
been playing since wrath, never used a "combat addon" till about 10 days ago when I got fed up with dying over and over and OVER to Zekvir?? and I needed him dead before the new patch.
Protected debuffs are basically the Private auras they've introduced, and they are horrible. They make it impossible to easily customize audio (it requires a pre-defined audio file and obscure code to register). It makes it impossible to properly customize the looks as well, meaning it's extremely hard to see. The solution is to make the mechanic in a way where you don't have to see the buff/debuff icon, which is what they should do anyway, thus completely remove the need for a private aura, which they keep using. They just don't know wtf they are doing.
They already hide some debuffs from time to time. What it leads to is now if you see you have a debuff addons aren't allowed to see you have to press a macro to alert the WeakAura. So it's just worse. You still solve the fight with an addon, it's just more clunky and annoying, requires more time to trouble shoot all the technical issues etc. Their attempt at hidden debuffs is what made addon situation *worse*.
The issue with private auras is that it doesn't even stop us from using Weakauras to track debuffs. Instead of having an aura autotrack who has what debuffs, we just use a macro to signal to the weakaura that we DO have the debuff, then it auto-assigns positions just like it was doing before. We've done this on Smolderon, and Fyrakk. Players will always find a way to make these tools work.
It's kind of funny to hear you reinvent the idea of private auras.
swabby love the name Beautiful kitty :)
so young and already part of the family business
Feral Druid got the best of him
every serious player uses addons in FF lol,its just that players cant force others to use it lol,no1 is getting banned for using combat addons lol, they couldnt do the raids without addonsm, rly ignorant and uninformed statement Lore
Blizzard needs to ban TSM as well. No one should be able to post and cancel auctions constantly
now we're talking
people who say ''just dont use addons'' are either trolling or are completly clueless, you LITERALY cant play some bosses without addons, for example queen ansurek, the last boss on mythic...how the heck will you know when to take the portal?or how the heck will you know the essence timer?count in your head? if the game told you that would be fine, but at that point...whats even the point of the anti addon argument, bosses need to be completly reworked
the game is too complicated period most classes have like three times too many abilities trash in dungeons should at most one thing most raids have twice as many mechanics as they should only dungeon bosses seems be near the right complexity in general, the is terrible at telegraphing mechanics intuitively talents, gearing, consumables are all too complicated the game doesn't respect playtime down nearly every detail the game is designed for twenty year veterans with twenty year old reaction times and esport levels of sweat wow was the casual players mmo
i think you just got old and bad
Sounds like you haven't played WoW for 20 years. If ever.
@@deenman23 no, he's right and it's a really common take. There's way too much stuff going on. Just the spell effects alone are totally ridiculous. Game needs massive pruning in almost every area.
@ idk game feels fine for me,just killed queen mythic last week, felt like a very chill last boss
Bro. Stop it. WoW is already too simple. There is WoW for stupid people already. It's called Classic. It's called Delves. It's called M+9 and below. It's called normal raids. It's called Elder Scrolls Online. And so on. Just go away and eat your crayons in peace.
On the Ovinaxx issue. Private auras exist, and ovinaxx egg break on beta was originally a private aura on beta. And it would have been absolutely terrible as one, but the encounter team just missed an easy layup. They made all the debuffs the exact same, you simply make the debuffs 4 different colours, and you can make the debuffs private auras and we wouldnt have used an addon for the mechanic, you would simply just go to the eggs marked by the raid leader with whatever colour matches your debuff. On the accessibility side, you also make the debuffs different looking, they literally did this on mekkatorque with the bot sequence you had to enter, they had colours, but they also had symbols (bolt, gear, etc) so both the regular and colourblind folks. They have ways they have combated this stuff in the past, they just dont seem to be nearly as consistent as they need to be. Now I dont know how they make encounters, Josh can probably speak to that more, but you hear a lot of about X person made Y encounter, which makes it seem like its very silo'd so lessons learned with something like the mekkatorque example is lost, when some new guy just jumps in and makes ovinaxx
My 2c is the longer I play the fewer add-ons I "need". I'm not all that "hardcore" but I have no problem getting AoTC and KM with nothing but DBM and Details. The longer I play the less useful even DBM becomes. Outside of physical limitations I think a lot of people have been using combat add-ons for so long they have become dependent on them, but they are not at all "necessary" to play the game and play it well.
I played without addons for a while, but eventually added dbm(boss and dunegon weakaura pack)
Two questions: MM hunters are getting a pretty fundamental rework for 11.1. What is your opinion on Blizz changing a spec or class's core functionality Mid expansion like this? In the past they always waited for the launch of a new expansion for this level of rework, but lately they have been more willing to do it for a season change in a major patch. Is it good they are willing to fix a spec in a timely manor, even if it means a big change or is it better to leave the big changes for new expansions when players have more time to adjust to them?
From the wowhead writeup it sounded like it would play similar to now just better. Which is the best you can hope for in a mid xpac rework I guess. Won't be as jarring to players, aside from losing pet obviously.
Instantly liked for the kitty intro.
I have so many thoughts about this topic that I am finding it difficult to write a comprehensible comment. In short: - I hate mythic Broodtwister Ovinax - I love the "power aura" visuals and wish they were used more (in particular, the Maelstorm Weapon indicator for Enhancement Shaman and the Critical Strike indicator for Fire Mage) - I like Edit Mode and most attempts they have done to integrate popular addons into the base game - I wish they would add some of the primary features from Weakauras (specifically buff/debuff tracking) and Plater (nameplates overlapping and/or being impossible to understand during large M+ pulls).
I miss Just the Tip tbh. But also I value your opinion and that why I watch your content. So yeah guides and discussion and maybe even reviews later on when possible. Keep up the good work!
I haven't seen anything from you in 11 ish years. You went to work for Blizzard, I quit wow and lost this you tube account. Good to see you back.
I've watched most of SGMS and I audibly groaned when I heard the "the discussion show for...we'll get back to that" because I assumed you were going to be saying that you were switching the general gaming content, which is something I'm not interested in. But after watching the video, I definitely support what youre doing. I definitely like your videos where you kind of pull together your experience as a longtime gamer, MMO player, gaming industry insider, and content creator the most and if that means you have to broaden your horizons, then I am definitely on board. My one caveat though is that I'd prefer if that kind of content doesn't just become about what is happening in the general gaming world. I know you mentioned that you're definitely not going to start just start telling us news facts which is good, but even just talking about the general gaming zeitgeist is pretty uninteresting me. You said you may want to do a video about Marvel Rivals and to me, any video at all about Rivals right now would basically be one about the "general gaming zeitgeist" and this is coming from someone who likes Rivals. BUT you specifically mentioned how you wanted to do a video talking about Rivals and OW specifically, and that's a video I would definitely love to see from you knowing that you're not just going to start taking shots at either game. With all that being said, happy new year! Looking forward to another year of SGMS!
My feedback: People are here for Lore, not the news. You're right in thinking that we are here for what you think and not for patch notes.
This is good stuff.
More content more raids leave everything else as it is no class changes no pvp changes. IF we wanted retail and convenience it exists we don't want that, it degrades the essence of the game.
Just another reason to never play retail again.
You should talk more about your time at Blizzard, and also do some shorts about it. PirateSoftware got extremely popular doing that, talking about his time in the past at Blizzard.
How about bring Phoney on with you and chatting about gaming/world events. You 2 had chemistry long ago. You guys still chat? Just an idea 😊
Sounds like it's been a pretty good year! Definitely enjoy the discussion-y, analytical-y videos in part because they actually are discussions In addition to watching your videos, it's always nice to read the comments too because you have a thoughtful and engaged audience. So looking forward to hearing the Plunderstorm discussion, I hope the changes made make people more open to enjoying it this time around. I loved it, but I'm a rare pvp and pve person. And totally open to hearing thoughts on other games. As a content creator (diff channel/focus), one thing I would suggest thinking about is if there is a different type of video you can do consistantly that requires less work/time/analysis. I love the analysis ones, but they are lots of research and effort and sometimes it's helpful to have something easier in the mix as well. What is "easier" varies greatly person to person, Q&As, Fave Transmog, The One ...... That Got Away (mount, pet, quest, achievement), Spinner Wheel Randomizer with Zones & share a memory, Posting a Poll/Reading the Responses,... etc. Just an idea to help combat potential burnout as it does sound like that analysis ones are intensive. Thank you for all the work that you do. Hope you are having a great 2025 so far!
I love your analysis and chatting videos as I appreciate hearing someone who is informed on a topic speak about it, and you are very informed when it comes to thinking about how games work and the reasons they work the way they do. I have always wanted to hear someone talk about how the games we played growing up inform our gaming patterns as an adult. Particularly with 1st generation wow players (vanilla and TBC 20 years ago) I've noticed an overwhelming majority that loved final fantasy games, early elder scrolls, zelda games. Basically any open world or big world type rpg/adventure game and how is inevitably lead to an extreme Crack-like addiction to WoW. Hell I just picked up Vanilla again with the anniversary realms and it's nearly as fun as 20 years ago STILL. I think this archetype of fantasy gaming is common with around 90 percent of 1st generation wow adopters because we were built to play in this world. I've noticed also that later generations of wow players have more varied reasons for finding it and generally don't come from a common gaming background. For example a lot of the Team Liquid guys I listen to have totally different gaming backgrounds and prefer retail. I'm rambling but I really hope someone will tackle this subject in depth from some angle. I'm an incredibly nostalgic person as I believe nostalgia is one of the things that makes us truly human. I love to play old games like FFantasy 1-10, baldurs gate 1 and 2, elder scrolls etc. And they feel much like vanilla to me for some reason. Anyway. Maybe something comes of it.
Also: you have the best intros hands down. They consistently get a chuckle out of me. Never change that lol.
Love to see you put out some raid and dungeons strats like the old days
The deep dive on one or two subjects an episode are far more enjoyable than just firing off bullet points of info, when you go off topic or off on an unexpected tangent its even better.
I agree - speculation and analysis with your own input is definitely more interesting rather than just reporting on news. I'm pretty bad at giving feedback since I'll watch any video you put out. I think I missed two in total since SGMS started 😅 Here's to a great 2025. Cheers! 🍾
Hey Lore, so sorry if I missed it on a prior episode but while listening to this episode I couldn't keep myself from thinking of your thoughts on The Remarkable Life of Ibelin from Netflix. I watched it about two weeks ago and haven't been able to put it out of my mind. I work with many people who don't play WoW and I've gotten many to move from console to PC games. Unfortunately, not many make the plunge into WoW and they worry about the toxicity of the WoW community and of how toxic gaming is in general (especially FPS games). Many have seen Arcane and love it but are also unaware of how toxic that game is known for. Anyways, I think WoW has a perception problem and I think many would enjoy a reaction video if you haven't seen Ibelin yet. It gives a positive view of online gaming. Any community commentary related stuff you have a unique perspective on I'm sure and many would love to hear. I was worried I was being propagandized by Blizzard with the movie because it was so well done but I watched an interview with the director and he said he was making it 3 years prior to asking Blizzard for permission.
I was excited to rediscover you making YT content after you taught me to raid in wotlk on my paladin all those years ago. It got me going back to rewatch some Weekly Marmot episodes XD I have definitely enjoyed the perspective and context you provide with your experience having been around Blizzard all these years - it definitely adds to the weight of your commentary. Also, general video game content and how it might relate to Blizzard sounds like a good listen to me! If I had one suggestion that might help grow your channel past your core audience. When you have the time/resources, I think working on your background as a set might help attract a broader audience. It's no disrespect to what you have goin, I'm sure it's just your office/nerd room like the rest of us, but with your history I'm sure you've got some cool stuff to showcase. Hang up that sword and those guitars! Let me see all those wow collector's editions! I know I'm just listening to (and not watching ) a video after a few minutes, but I've watched a video for less just to see what someone has hanging up in their thumbnail lol.
This is like old school, way long ago deep cut Lore, but I miss when you used to commentate over Brawlers Guild matches. lol
Very excited for everything you discussed and can't wait for all the good stuff coming in 2025. I really like the idea of branching off into discussing other games and game systems, but I have a slight concern that doing those topics fairly will require more editing effort. I think some of the WoW discussions work because most of your audience is at least familiar with WoW and how its core systems work. If you start talking in-depth around Everquest, for instance, I would need some good visuals and more simplistic introductions to understand the topic since I have never played EQ and know very little about it. Still think its a great idea, but just offering some food-for-thought.
I have watched you since Tank spot and the weekly show with Olivia and that guy (cant remember his name lmao). Thats were i found Sloot too. But imo there are just so many content creators like Bellular etc that are big and well produced for Info...Where you shine is when your talking, thinking and really starting a discussion moreso than a info panel. And thats okay imo. Its not something to stress over. Its great your realizing your jam and going down that path. Most people struggle to ever find what they are good at and what they like....and more importantly...they often never go down that path even if they know. Anyways looking to see what the year brings.
I love the ideas you presented for new topics on the show. I would especially be interested in you looking at games like Monsters & Memories or Pantheon and then discussing what made classic MMOs special and why there are projects attempting to recreate that magic.
Would love to hear your thoughts on SoD phase 7s new content and future new content that has been said to be coming out after Naxx. Do you think we will be able to purify Ashbringer in the new scarlet raid?
The marmot is still weekly I hope
I am proud what you've built so far Devolore. I think you expanding to other games will be good and I look forward to it.
Funny enough, I am DEEP in EQ during my wow break right now.
