Kinda funny that the question came up about old content. Old videos are floating around on Gamebreaker and Ciderhelm where I watched the first weekly Marmot episode, Shocked at how much UI has changed over the years. The goodbye video still gets me even though you are back. PVP POWER!!!
I can't tell if I agree so much with all of these takes because you're so right about everything, or if it's just that I've been listening to your opinions for so long that I just think the same way at this point.
Hey Lore, would it be possible that you make a video about Housing in WoW? Which system you would prefer (ESO, FF14, SWTOR, etc) and why Blizz has 20 years gone by, without really doing it? I liked the Garrison, but it wore off 2 Months into the expansion. Why do they not improve on stuff like this? (same goes for warfronts, that could have been converted to pvp maps or pvbots)
I think what made WoD in bad state at the end because of the amount of cut contents. Like the major patch of Farahlon (the original area of what become later on as the Netherstorm). And Kargath bladefist having his own raid and surviving his encounter in Highmaul.
Y'know, I'm really hoping that planning multiple expansions in advance will net a lot of positives for WoW. Seeing all of them lined up really shows how disconnected they can be from one to the next, and how ideas and core features end up being dropped instead of iterated on. The biggest one for me is Legion artifacts. It always felt weird that we basically just threw away these legendary, iconic weapons at the end. We could have just reset them to a more basic power level instead and had part of follow-up expansions be re-energizing them with the new expansion gimmicks (using Azerite would have offered some interesting story options, too). Plus, I really liked the idea of "completing" the talent trees in them. It might take some time, but eventually being able to "master all my spec's abilities" feels appropriate. And even if we couldn't keep the artifact weapons, I think they could have used a better resting option, like putting them somewhere where they will *eventually* regain their power for story purposes (or could get stolen and used by villains). Another feature that comes to mind--especially now with the warbands--is garrisons. They shouldn't be AS central to everything, but having your band of alts collectively building up a space (or spaces) feels like it could be a great pairing.
Afrisiabi - it's ok to say his name. He's not voldemort. He's the "guy" that the writers had to clean up after. It's kinda amazing that someone with such a short stay at the company had such a tremendous impact that will be discussed forever I think.
Dragonflight was weird because at first I felt it was better but then after playing it for the first patch I really didn't like it. There were some improvements, but then the last half or 3/4 I just couldn't make myself play. The crafting system seemed like it would be good at first but it was just a way to make people login every week for a few points. The crafting orders were very limited in getting what you actually wanted at the right level (maybe they fixed it later). After the initial patch, the lower rank items were just a way to trash your bags. There were too many systems and currencies. The quests were boring after a while. I don't like the trading post or that currency. I don't like everything relying on the vault. The loot system moving away from private loot was a pain. The dungeons and raids were full of ambiguous and annoying borders and visual effects.
46:00 ok this is going to be a long one, and I’m order to make my point a bit more clear I need to rock my cred a bit here. I started playing World of Warcraft back around the time of the original AQ 40 event in vanilla. Since then I have seen the game go through many changes. Some good, some bad but in the end all of them were made with the intention of making the game better. All except for one, the games monetization. When I hear WoW devs and WoW apologetics talk about the topic I hear a lot of justifications such as: “it’s industry standard” or “we need to pay our devs in a competitive market”. These excuses ring pretty hallow in the face of the reality of the gaming industry at large. The most profitable massively multiplayer games out right now are free to play. Just look at games like fortnight, apex legends, League of Legends, DOTA 2 and many more. These games have huge and in many cases growing or at least sustaining player populations. Meanwhile WoW has been facing a slow decay since Cataclysm. This might have to due to WoWs age and it’s players just ageing out but I suspect there’s more. WoWs biggest problem for new player acquisition is all the barriers to entry. Online games live and die off there player populations and asking potential new players to pay a 70$ box price, 15$ monthly sub fee, and on top of that an overpriced cash shop; is all just too much. Why bother with that when there are so many gaming options, that are a full quality experience, for absolutely free? These games are supported by optional in game shops that very often don’t effect gameplay. Honestly we’ve seen how profitable cash shops are in WoW itself already. The original sparkle pony in Wrath made more then the whole of StarCraft 2 Wings of Liberty. I’m just sick of watching blizzard stumble due to what honestly just looks like stubborn old guard thinking.
I was hoping you would talk a bit about the WoD cut content/tier (assuming you are even allowed). I think an insider perspective that isn't bound by PR rules would be interesting in retrospect.
For some reason I went into this thinking your list would be completely different to my own, I completely agree with you on the number 1 spot being Legion. I wonder how many at Blizzard now would say the same? What do you think the chances are of a Order Hall and or an Artifact Weapon type systems ever returning? That put such a great emphasis on class themes. I would love to see Order Halls becoming an "Evergreen" system, perhaps I'm incorrectly using that term, but I would like to return there every expansion for at least story reasons, to hear the thoughts of class leaders on current events.
For me it was the opposite. I often go really positive into an expansion and end up disappointed in what i try (torghast, professions, quests). Instead with dragonflight even if the story was hit and miss i enjoyed the overall expansion quite a bit, it lived to my positive expectations and surpassed them. The story was very "low-stakes" with few hype moments, but it was linear, easy to follow and it did not have BAD moments, it was avarage and that's good. When i started i was blown away by dragonriding and talents (and new UI!) , it really felt like a fresh new wow and both me and my brother had a blast like we never had in years (it had hard to finish shadowlands and we didn't even finish bfa), it motivated me to try so many classes and specs and even level up characters (which i did not do since LEGION). Then there is professions, which i always max every expansions with 2 characters and this time with all the new stats and items and all the little materials that had value (! and don't forget the item that made you increase ilvl for craft-equips), they felt so relevant, i was finally engaging with it, doing all the first crafts, buying recipes and looking forward to filling the profession talent tree (which admittedly was VERY confusing at first in how to handle, almost IMPOSSIBLE to tackle, and guides did not help at all, but after i go the hang of it i could easily understand which tree was for me and which not) For myth dungeons and raids, i think they haven't blown me away but they were good anyway. Mid-patches were creative and it really felt like they were putting the effort, even for content that wasn't meant to last (like 10.0.5 vaults). For world content i liked the new professions, there was always a new little reward they gave for free every few levels. One thing i disliked is how spread weeklies and locations were, and sometimes reaching places with dragonriding was annoying.
Question. Since BfA's introduction of the concept of allied races, the debate of new races added to the game and what should constitute a new race has become pretty contentious. What is your general option on how Blizzard should approach new races? Are neutral races good or bad for the game? What about variants of existing races like the Earthen?
the only thing i agree with you on is that legion was an absolute banger xpac. i dont think i would put it first, but it was excellent. putting vanilla wow 6th is sacrilege. it stands apart from all of the other games where the focus was on end game because it is the only version of wow where the focus is on the leveling journey. it is hard to even compare to the other expansions (even tbc and wotlk) because they are apples and oranges. also, cata 4th is... a choice.
I didn't survive the 1, 2 punch of WoD and Legion. 10m raiding was killed at the highest level. Guild tried going casual, but we quickly found out small group sizes were broken in WoD. 10m normal was more challenging than 30m heroic. We begrudgingly recruited more just to be able to do heroic properly, which would make a poor foundation for a mythic guild. Then Legion killed off raid logging. Everyone was burnt out by ToS. My crowd of people no longer felt welcome in the game. WoW was moving towards catering to the solo player and the world class mythic raiding guild. I liked mythic+ in a vacuum, but I think it did irrevocable damage to the raiding scene. I'm having fun with cata classic and looking forward to mop classic, but that's probably it for me unless things like mop remix are continually released.
Dazar'alor wasn't practical but I loved it aesthetically as a troll fan and I liked that early on you had some choice of transportation you could unlock to fly around before flying, boralus didn't even use most of the city you stayed in the port and for me it is way more boring but sure more practical. And while Legion did bring more class fantasy for a lot of specs I still resent them for changing death knights as much, them losing different colors of runes and more lightly presences didn't feel great. Legion made dks less of a hero class by pruning even more their kit. The changes to deathstrike costing runic power and blood dk ending up having less armor than a boomkin in BFA are all changes that Legion caused and is why I enjoy a lot playing classic to get the old dk experience.
I would have forgiven SL if they would have brought Arthas back. Imagine basing a whole expansion off of him and then doing nothing with him. Such a shame.
For me it was TBC but then Legion came and surpassed it because not only it was a solid expansion with so many cool features and contents but also it was the continuation of the burning legion storyline which for me like TBC 2.0
I respect your list, but its almost impossible to grade these expansions fairly. Vanilla wow didn't have stuff required to be a good game by today's standards, but back in 2004 it exceeded expectations by a long shot. I remember using the gryphon flight points to fly around the map and being amazed, no other game at the time was doing that. Also there were no load screens from area to area as long as you stayed on the same continent. The base game revolutionized the mmo genre in a time where there was no other competition really (because of how good vanilla was). The original game is the best I have ever played, logging on everyday and seeing the same people and getting to know the people you shared a server with was truly a pleasure. However, I agree with your 40 man raid point.
Question: What's your experience with FFXIV? As someone who picked up FFXIV during the Shadowlands exodus and now plays both games I'm curious having heard you mention aspects about the game occasionally.
I disagree about TBC didnt change classic much, in TBC they added the flying mount which is A HUGE thing when it comes to mmo games back in those days.
interesting take on dragon flight. i have been on and off with wow for years. I tried to return for BFA, was totally lost and quit.. i tried to come back for shadowlands. I hated the story and the world so I quit.. now i came back for Dragonflight and I absolutely love it and ended up sticking around for the first time since Legion
I agree that dragonflight isn’t as good as many make out. The only aspect I would disagree on is that, in my opinion, nothing I’ve played (only starting during legion) is as bad as SL. My personal list would be: Shadowlands, Dragonflight, BFA, and legion. I don’t think if I’d started with any of these but legion I’d still be playing today in all honesty
Kinda agree on DF. It's an agressively mid expansion. 2/3 raids were'nt very good and it had some of the most boring patch content ever. A fast content cadence doesn't matter if the content isn't any good. And I particularly hate how Season 4 cannibalizes on the best raid tier they made for the expansion. I would rank BfA higher as well. 8.3 was so great that it retroactively makes up for a very iffy expansion before it.
1) Mist - Challenge mods and the 2nd and 3rd raid so freaking good. 2) BFA - Only played the last patch but corrupt was the most interesting and engaging gear system ever attempted. Visions as a solo challenge was freaking goated. 3) Cata - 2nd and 3rd raid (minus deathwing encounter) was really good and the questing was pretty good. 4-9) Everything else not listed was ok nothing stood out as great or truly horrible like warlords so order doesn't mean much to me. 10) Warlords completely ruined the game for me for years and hated basically everything about it. F warforging! Didn't played legion because of how bad warlords was.
I hate this notion that if a PC game can be played with a controller, then that's a bad thing. No, it's a good thing because it makes the game accessible to people who already know how to play with a controller, and there are countless games on PC that people play with a controller that no one complains about, including Elden Ring. The current optimal way to play WoW is with a keyboard and MMO mouse, which almost no one has used prior to WoW or even when starting WoW, which all contributes to the horrible new player experience that currently exists.
I 100% agree on Dragonflight. Returning player myself, it was a mess. All the new systems and the story too didnt catch me at all. It was too much feel good "we do this together" blah blah feelings. Chromie used to be a cute little fun dragon...I cringe now when I hear her talk. Same with Kalegos..So sad all the time. Playing through the story only to level got really really confusing at the end levels and at 70. All of the sudden the apsects had their powers back..But I didnt see that cinematic until later. It was so messy. The cinematics and story was hard to follow in a straight line
For me worst to best Crapacltsm This is the only expansion I *HATED* everything sucked in it, gearing was a nightmare, everything was overturned trying to heal felt like trying to sink a battleship with a BB gun Warlords of Draenor The whole no flying fiasco actually cussed me unsub until they backtracked Battle for Azeroth Didn't care for the story too much I didn't like Azerite at all Shadow Lands Story was bad, I enjoyed a lot of the mechanics I really liked Torghast Burning Crusade Where I started WoW some good memories but didnt get deep into content Wrath Really liked the new class and the raids were a lot of fun Mists Was a refreshing change after Crapaclysm Dragonflight I loved all the stuff to do but the systems got too complicated Legion My absolute favorite, I loved the story the themes the mechanics Artifct weapons were so good!
it only lasted 45 seconds, but that troll felt as long as the lull after Nathria.
Suramar was peak for me. Having a zone to explore at the end there with a story that progressed was great.
i love how they figure out the unambiguous best way to do things, and then aggressively insist on never doing it that way again!
LEGION is also my #1 of all time! LOVED collecting all the Artifact Weapon appearances, and also leveling them up
Kinda funny that the question came up about old content. Old videos are floating around on Gamebreaker and Ciderhelm where I watched the first weekly Marmot episode, Shocked at how much UI has changed over the years. The goodbye video still gets me even though you are back. PVP POWER!!!
listening and watching your content agine just brings me back.

Mists of pandaria was peak for me because the class design was so perfect, Warlock will never be as fun as it was during that expansion
Feral Druid
Afrisiabi - it's ok to say his name. He's not voldemort. He's the "guy" that the writers had to clean up after. It's kinda amazing that someone with such a short stay at the company had such a tremendous impact that will be discussed forever I think.
I just picked up dragonflight three weeks ago after not playing since bfa. I really liked what I played and regret missing the expansion
Just wanted to say I appreciate the additional context about the Slyvanas thing.
38:20 ya legion was dope

Top 3 for me was Legion, MoP and Vanilla, in that order
I havent played wow in years but I can see why the modern expansions are lowest at the list. That's my feelings on the matter as well
They had us in the first half, not gonna lie
I agree that dragonflight isn’t as good as many make out. The only aspect I would disagree on is that, in my opinion, nothing I’ve played (only starting during legion) is as bad as SL.

Why are people still asking for player housing? I don't care about it one bit
I 100% agree on Dragonflight. Returning player myself, it was a mess. All the new systems and the story too didnt catch me at all. It was too much feel good "we do this together" blah blah feelings. For me worst to best
Crapacltsm This is the only expansion I *HATED* everything sucked in it, gearing was a nightmare, everything was overturned trying to heal felt like trying to sink a battleship with a BB gun
Warlords of Draenor The whole no flying fiasco actually cussed me unsub until they backtracked
Battle for Azeroth Didn't care for the story too much I didn't like Azerite at all
Shadow Lands Story was bad, I enjoyed a lot of the mechanics I really liked Torghast
Burning Crusade Where I started WoW some good memories but didnt get deep into content
Wrath Really liked the new class and the raids were a lot of fun
Mists Was a refreshing change after Crapaclysm
Dragonflight I loved all the stuff to do but the systems got too complicated
Legion My absolute favorite, I loved the story the themes the mechanics Artifct weapons were so good!
40:40 survival hunter should be a tank spec. Where your pet tanks for you
Eyes of the Beast is back fyi.
Shouldn't it be 'Worst to Best'?
torghast good yeh it was until they screwed it up
Dragonlands was my least favorite too
Starting this video off Strong I see :P
choreghast
Shadowlands for me was the worst expansion surpassed even BfA and WoD.
0/10 list would watch again.
First lol
